Why people are accepting Government Guidance as opposed to Doctors & Specialists?

In a world where everyone knows governments are corrupt and don't have our best interest I was rather surprised how easily people forgot any wrongdoing the government’s have done and considered the Covid guidance from the Government’s the "Source of truth".
I'm trying to understand why the same people that always criticising and were sceptical of government’s having our best interest suddenly trusted them 300% with everything they said to do or not do during the pandemic including dob on your neighbours.
Coming from an ex communist country the first thing that came to mind was when the government is saying "We are your only source of truth!" was that our democratic society is severely under threat and now behaving exactly as a dictatorship.
