I have a friend who started PhD studies recently but unsuccessful in stipend application. He is a domestic student. Just wondering anyone has the same experience? Also, any tips to get funding for PhD studies. Thanks 😊

Yes, it can happen. In Australia, domestic PhD students often apply for a Research Training Program (RTP) stipend, but not everyone gets it because places are limited and competitive.

If your friend missed out, here are some simple options:

Apply again next round – sometimes people get it later if spots open.

Ask supervisor – sometimes they have project funding to support students.

Look for scholarships – universities, government, or private organisations often have smaller grants.

Part-time work or tutoring – many PhD students earn extra money this way.

👉 Best step: encourage your friend to talk with their supervisor and the university’s graduate research office about alternative funding.

Help Caféstudy members by responding to their questions, or ask your own in Café Chat, and you will get the chance of earning extra rewards. Caféstudy will match these and donate equally to our two chosen Australian charities.
