I am trying to do the research on Solar Energy and I have been totally confused. I believe electricity is going to increase on 1st July and we are being told to go solar panels and be paid for the credits that we don't use but there are different types and different schemes, in NSW the Government, is giving I believe the net credit scheme, where do I go for more information? Does anyone have the correct knowledge of it,please?

My daughter purchased a 1.9 kw solar system (10 panels) and her electricity bills have dropped dramatically. With the increase in the price of electircity it was a good idea to go solar. However, those who haven't done so now have "missed the boat" as not only has the Government rebate halved (from June 30th) the tarrif rate has now dropped (from October) from 44 cents to 16 cents.

I live in a remote rural area and we are not connected to the grid (was going to cost $70,000 six years ago) so are using a stand alone solar system 1.5 kw and manage with computer, printer, scanner, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, washing machine, vaccume cleaner,TV, DVD recorder, microwave, toaster and water pump - admittedly not all at the same time or we trip the safety switch.

I think solar is a great idea especially as the forcast is for there not being enough electricity to supply the state in the future.

To solar or not to solar! that is indeed the question. We looked into it and seriously to get any of the benefits like selling back to the grid, you need a big bank of panels, more than our roof could take, and then you wait for quite some time to get enough credis to sell back. We were quoted approx $10,000 to install and then add in the time it takes to accumulate credits it is so exspensive. I decided in the end not to go solar as I figured I could pay a lot of electricity bills with $10,000! I am looking after the planet in other ways. Besides I dont believe we are doing damage to the climate and certainly dont believe having a carbon tax is going to make one bit of difference to the planet. The trees and plants need carbon - that is what they need to survive and keep us healthy.

It is a confusing and complicated topic.
First we contacted Ingenero.com.au where Tony Kinights was most informative. My partner went to Solar Choice, (brokers I think ...was free) for heaps of quotes to compare. By then, companies from the brokers list began to contact us so we asked them many many more questions.
For such a commitment, we felt that the quality of the components is just as important as the price. We think that the Suntech (crystalline panels) and the SMA (sunnyboy) inverter (German) are the best, so we looked at companies that used those.
We are in Victoria so we used Sun Savers as the cheapest quote with those components. Ingenero in Queensland were unable to match that. Sunsavers were excellent and efficient.
Powercore, and our retail supply company have not been very efficient getting the smart meter installed / operating and co-ordinating their paper work. Four months later we are awaiting the power bill to see our credits!!!
Here's hoping.
Yes, I do believe NSW are cutting back their subsidies soon, maybe Vic too!
Best of luck.

and is there still a subsidy to get solar ?

Yes there is but it's been cut to 20c per kilowatt hour. The other rebates for renewable energy credits (REC) still apply.

I believe now that the Govt rebate has been cut but i have reseached in ways in reducing the cost of buying solar panel you can build them yourself all the neccesary stuff is on either You tube or...

This is true, but you cannot connect to the grid without an electrician and also Powercor's permission. We are currently adding to our solar grid-connect. We first installed a Braemac system through the "Murchison Goes Solar" community project. The group deal was fantastic. We have 1 kw panels and 2 kw inverter. It has proven cheaper for us to install an entire second system than to upgrade the panels to meet the inverter capabilities. Braemac has given us a great price for a 4kw system and we'll install as soon as possible.
