To Twitter or not to Twitter?

Do you use this recently floated social media? If so, what do you use it for? Are you following celebrities or companies/brands? What are you hoping to find out from Twitter feeds? And to non users - what does Twitter mean to you? What do you think it offers and why do you not use it?

Not interested in it. I may end up being the last person on earth who doesn't use Twitter or Farcebook.
What does it offer? Nothing to me. Why? Because I'm not interested in the minute details of people's lives.

I use twitter alot
I find its great for up to the minute news and current affairs
But mainly ive noticed its best for bringing you into contact with other like minded people who have similar interests -hobbies. And connecting to people that you would never get a chance to meet.

I don't have a twitter account and wont be getting one.
I have a FB account and look at it rarely, never put anything on it, and am losing interest in opening it.
Pictures of children and food, selfies, or holiday snaps don't interest me, I have no idea why more than half the content comes to me.
I do not intend to block stuff, but I do ignore friend invitations from people I barely know or don't know at all.
I have little or no interest in the musings of faceless people.

Hardly a 'recently floated' media. In tech terms it's almost ancient.

Don't use any of the unsociable media options. Really can't be bothered with them.

I have just got into Twitter. I am still finding my way around it. I don't mind seeing what people have to say, or the topics and pictures or photos that are up there. But the replys of "I like it" mean nothing as you can't go anywhere with it. So the topics are great but the responses are average. I was anti, but I have decided that these mediums are the thing of the times whether we embrace them or not. As of next year I will want my audience to grow so it seems as though I have to use this medium to gather a crowd.

I do not use any social media - they are evil - especially facebook. and twitter is for complete twits who think their lives and everything in it is so fascinating they have to share everything with everyone in the world. Newsflash twits - your life is not that fascinating even in your wildest dreams!! I certainly realize the mundane-ness of my own life and chose not to plaster every boring detail of it out there for everyone. I just don't see the point in seeing everything from what food everyone eats to what they wear, do or see or even random often obscure thoughts they have. no-one needs a zillion 'friends' they don't even really know. And who cares about your newest pair of shoes or that 'fantastic' dinner at some restaurant anyway - just wear the shoes and eat the dinner and get on with your life instead of living it through some silly website.

I don't tweet.

I do have a FB account, which I rarely visit. Family and friends occasionally have something new to share, so I have a look now and then. A picture of a plate of food doesn't interest me much.

I've never really mastered FB and have only made a couple of status updates over the years I've had an account. It's filling up with more and more adverts, I know why I get some but most are of no interest to me.

I shouldn't knock twitter because I haven't really looked into it.
But judging from my lack of interest in FB, twitter has little to make me want to find out more.

used this once, for a sort of chat/info/social thing - had a bad experience with it and discovered that a lot of the responses were not really what I was looking for. For news or similar, even if you want to follow celebs, it is fun, interesting and fills in lots of time!!!.

I am a student and I really don't think that twitter appeals to a younger audience, especially if they aren't all that interested in politics, because that's what it seems to mainly be about! Or if you're into hearing about random celebrity talk!

  • 16th Jun 2014 08:36pm

I agree with a lot of what joysemite has stated. I don't like the brevity of a sentence or two. I also think it is just to do with celebrity chit chat and that bores me. I feel that Facebook has a lot more to offer and that is why I don't use Twitter and probably never will.

No, I don't twitter. I don't see any point in twittering when I can be getting on with sending real messages with a real purpose to real people. The proliferation of programs such as Twitter is simply evidence of the decline of meaningful communication today. The next step will be something like pig grunts or cow moosic.

I'm do not Twitter between phone calls at work, personal calls and the games on my phone I'm okay. Nothing I've heard has convinced me that it is something I'd like to be participate in and so many people seem to be affected by what they read on twitter, no thanks. I use Facebook and only share with my friends, all social media apps seem to let people think they can be as mean as possible to anyone. Facebook would be better if my friends would send me more lives for the games I play.

I'm a regular user of Twitter. I don't follow follow celebrities, in fact i use it for buisness purposes. Over the years by linking/advertising my other social networking sites such as Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram it has allowed me to gain a great deal of followers. As a small business owner this has had a great impact on my business (positive). I hope to see in the near future more people that have been successful instead of publishing in depth detail of the private lives for the world to see.

Yes, I use it to keep in touch with those in my fandom (Heartbeats, Lovatics etc etc) And to see what celebrities are getting up to. However I do indeed use it to see how my friends are doing, overseas and or close by. It's a useful tool really, and I like to use Twitter in all ways possible. :D

I am new to Twitter and a long time user of Facebook. I fail to understand why twitter is as popular as it is. Although I am new to Twitter and have been able to locate people with opinions and observations I might fascinating, the platform itself is so much more restrictive compared to Facebook. How is Twitter in any way superior to Facebook as a forum to share ideas and allow others to reciprocate with their own views? There no hashtags and character limits to consider and Facebook pages serve as ideal forums for debate, despite many duplicate pages devoted to the same people, organisations, interests and so on being my major gripe. In my opinion, there is no advantage to using Twitter over Facebook.

I am a non user... Twitter doesnt mean anything to me, I agree with some of the others that have left comments saying that they just dont inderstand its use, I dont believe it to be of any benefit to me to be on twitter as I am already on facebook and find it to be much easier to understand and use... But if I was to use twitter, would use it to follow brands or artists as I think alot of artists use it to get more publicity for their work which I can appreciate.

About two years ago i cancelled all of my social network accounts. Of course every now and then it would be nice to go and check out what people are up to but I smile every time i see someone missing out on life while they are too engrossed in their facebook/twitter accounts. When used wisely social networking is great. the other 98% of the time it's simply a waste of people's time and intelligence.

I don't really see the point of twitter and never bothered to join.
I have a FB account, but never make any posts. I go to FB on rare occasions and all I see is pictures of plates of food or people out and about and of course adverts.
I don't need to know, any of the stuff I see on FB and from what I can gather twitter is full of people with an opinion on almost everything and knowledge about almost nothing.
Some people seem to comment on FB when they feel angry or upset or most of the time to say I am here. It is of very little of interest to me. I think twitter may be even less appealing.
I guess I just don't need it.

I did go along time without jumping on the bandwagon but i do find it good for posting on as opposed to following myself, its pretty basic and unless someones views are just soo important to you in a particular sphere, like politics or government or you have a cause that you support its kinda boring

I only created my Facebook account a few years back not straight away when it came out! It can be bad if you get 'too involved' in it you need to know when to switch off! Twitter is used mainly for celebrity gossip and such. I do have an account but it remains almost unused. Personally, I follow a few favourite bands, but usually fashion icons. Its legitimately a site for gossip and direct quotes from celebrities, sort of like a magazine, just minus the articles.

What is the whole point of spending time reading about other peoples lives all day or tweeting/posting about your own? Shouldn't your life be enjoyed by you and not by everyone else? Also on that same note shouldn't everyone else be enjoying their own lives in private not on the internet for the whole world to see and read about?

That may be true for some. But social media is great for advertising and sharing awareness for important issues now. Since a very very large majority of the world do use it, and enjoy it, they are inclined to see advertising and find out things they never knew before.

I am a user of Twitter, I find it mainly helpful for following writers and publishing houses, as they post a lot of publishing opportunities on Twitter that you'd otherwise have to go looking for. I do follow celebrities and selected brands, but don't want to get flooded on my feed by advertising. I also follow newspapers, so when I check my Twitter feed I. Hoping to find out a bit of news, and it really is like my own version if a. Digital newspaper at times.

I use Twitter extremely sparingly. Most of the time I do go on just for the celebrities that I follow. I also follow some accounts that post significant quotes and ideas, which I enjoy reading and retweeting. Otherwise I find the whole thing a little narcissistic. It's not like Facebook where your page is open to your friends to make their mark - your profile is only your side of the conversation, and I don't find that a very fulfilling way to socialise.

I have looked at Twitter to see what all the fuss is about, gave it 5 minutes and that was it.
I am a Facebook person and find that a great way to keep in contact with friends and relatives, particularly those who live overseas.
Because I don't have internet on my phone, it's a once a day thing. That's plenty for me.
If I feel suddenly desperate to tell someone that I ate a vegemite sandwich for lunch, I'll phone them.
I'll leave the Tweets to the Twits.

I don't use twitter because I have more to do with my time than read other peoples negative comments. There is enough bad news on TV and radio without supporting anyone who just wants to tell the world that they are unhappy with their lives and hope that others will agree. I don't use it and have no desire to. It seems like a complete waste of time to me - but then that is my opinion of facebook too! Sorry - I have better things I would rather spend my time on. Obviously people love these forms of media - perhaps it entertains them and they are constantly connected to others.

Good Heavens, what do they call the people who use it "Twits"? because the rubbish they write on twitter I think they must be. What a lot of complete nonsense. I really worry about the human...

Yes some people are making heaps of money from this shallow excuse for contact with others. I too wish I could think of something as pointless and make millions.

I really worry about the human race when people use stuff like this.. Makes you think the person or persons who devised Twitter are now filthy rich out of the silliness of others. Wish I could think of something stupid like this which would make me rich..

I do not use social media much, although I do have a Facebook account, I don't use it much either. Don't really see the need for this kind of communication. Don't see the need to air opinions globally. Seems to me twitter is just a social gossiping site.

Not a twitter user and think it is usually irrelevant trashy commentary by people I wouldn't abide anyway!! Another junk advertising medium too!!

I don't tweet and I don't follow anyone. From the inane comments I've read some celebs have tweeted I see no reason to be involved.

As for following company product releases I do that now with Google searches and tools like Google alerts. Yes, companies would more than likely to use a platform like twitter to leak info, but they would be doing themselves a disservice to limit themselves with the exclusion of more traditional things like media releases and advertising etc.
Twitter? seriously? IMHO, a waste of time...

I don't use it. I'm happy with facebook and don't see the need to be tweeting or whatever where ever I go.

Sometimes the only use I have for my computer is sharing petitions. I share through "Sum of Us" - have you used "sum of us"?

Why use it, after all there is enough with Facebook. Far too many people cant control them selves on social media to the point where it takes over their lives. Poor sad things have to even take their I pads, smart phones , lap tops to bed, the toilet the dinner table. And get agitated if they are out of contact for more than ten minutes and the longer they are out of contact the more agitated they get.

I don't like twitter because posts are generally junk and no point in reading. Though other social media are good for keeping in touch with people, basically like an address book for people who don't know how to ask for people's number or address. Also it's great for anxious people to meet new people in a safe environment.

I'm a non-user... I do have a twitter account but I'm hardly ever on it. I'd love to see why and what people use twitter for. I just don't get it. None of my friends have managed to convince me to use twitter cos I think Facebook is must more powerful and user-friendly (yes, I'm on FB all the time). Oh, and the limit of 160 (or is it 140) characters annoys me!

The limit is good - tweets are short and to the point. Better than trying to read through a bunch of waffle that a lot of people post on FB....!

Totally agree. I cancelled my twitter account as most people on there seem to be twits! Character limit does not allow you to get your thoughts across. Fb is sooo much better!
