Should people who commit crimes & then blame it on drugs get more lenient sentences?

Abusing drugs is a crime. But I agree that addicts do need help.

Im in two minds Im an ex user and now clean thank goodness, I did things that I would never have even thought of doing when straight, but I got caught and had to do rehab and report etc I can say the drugs did make me do things I wouldn't normally but I think if you do the crime you should do the time...on or off drugs

not so much as a more lenient sentence but rather be given the option for alternative sentence eg the option of 6 mths in goal or 2 mths in rehab and 4 mth volenteere work working with victems of drug related crime so not only are they off drugs but also hve to face the impact there dicision to take drugs has on others this will not only provide a punishment but also an incentive to improve there lifestyle

No! They chose to take the drugs and while I accept they may be addictive, here in Australia we have many ways to help addicts. All they have to do is ask.

Of course not. They should be charged for both the crime and the drug use.

Being an ex-heroin addict (clean 13 years ), I don't believe you should be able to blame drugs for committing crimes. I 'used' for 9 years and in that time never thought to do robberies or burglaries, muggings or the like. I supported my habit the old-fashioned way by working hard. I know that no matter how desperate I became at times I couldn't/wouldn't make others pay for my habit. Lawyers will tell their clients to use any excuse to get out of being sentenced to imprisonment. But no they shouldn't be punished for their drug usage, it is a genuine illness and they should be encouraged to seek help!
let's end the b******t and let the sentence be fair and jst for all without excuse.

No - a crime is a crime. But I do think they should be given help to overcome their drug problem.
