What do you think of the new smaller size Sydney Morning Herald and The Age? Have you picked it up yet? Is it easier to read? Do you think it will be as good a quality as the old version? Or do you prefer to read news online?

I don't think there is the same amount of content now. I am annoyed in Good Living part on Tuesdays that so much other information is available on-line. I had a digital subscription but gave it because it was too hard to use and when I complained they said "why don't you Google the topic?"!!

The smaller size does make it much easier to read especially in crowded areas. It is also less tiring to read when holding the newspapers up. I am sure the quality would be the same after all it is only the size of the newspaper that has changed.

I prefer broadsheet, though tabloid is easier to read in confined spaces. I'm a newspaper snob from way back, and I have always associated tabloids with exploitation and gutter journalism.
With the Fairfax press, I don't believe the change in appearance will change content one iota.
About time I changed my elitist attitudes?

1. The size is ok
2. Yes
3. About the same, maybe a bit easier
4. It is a newspaper. They don't need to last too long
5. I also read news online

I stopped buying the SMH after 35 years of enjoying the braodsheet, can't stand the new format I will not buy it . I used to cycle down to my country store very early like 6am and enjoy the ride to pick up my paper now I don't ride or read it any more. The one thing I loved was sitting on my porch reading a paper and I would take hours and then when it was about 8am go to work. my one thing that was so precious and a real treat to start the day and its taken away , not to mnetion the standard of the jouro's now. the articles I did read a few times all the crap you expect in the tele, and they repeat exactly the same stories days and days again and again, not just recaping they actual print word for word and pretend its todays news. Sorry SMH your gone .I only buy it on saturdays now the full braod sheet. wont touch online nothing beats the real thing of relaxing with an actual paper . bring back the broady or I will start readin ght eright wing conservative liberal paper THE AUSTRALIAN seriously

I guess I like that it presumably saves some trees but, well, there's something special about the impracticality of reading a broadform and now it doesn't feel right.

I have a subscription to the Herald, and sort of miss the larger format. I find I read the smaller size quicker, probably because I skip a lot more stories. I now tend to read more news online. I realise that the smaller format was a necessity, as print newspapers are becoming so much more expensive with a smaller reader base. They will probably disappear over the next ten years and we will have to pay subs just to read news online.

I have not yet read the new smaller versions:-
If the contain similar content to that previously published then they should continue to do well as a smaller broadsheet publication.
If they drop or change the content of the new papers then they will be no different from the tabloids that they have previously mocked as gutter press and will deserve the scathing comments that will come their way as the hipocrates that they have become.

I bought The Age on Wed first time in a while, I found the smaller sheets manageable, but didn't enjoy the stories being split constantly follow on was on page 5 or 7 or 9. Also found not nearly as much news and didn't find ads at all. Will have another try on the weekend.

We have been getting the AGE for 52 years. My father had it for 40 years..
We like it because:
Articles and stories are easier to find in the lesser page space.
Easier to carry and takes less space on a table .
Seems brighter and more engaging.

Haven't seen the new print version - it would have to be easier in a smaller format, although I hate to think what is needed to carry Saturday's one home.

Not greatly impressed with the new SMH website though.

I have seen the SMH. Love the new size - it's way easier to manage.
I am having some difficulty navigating the new format.
Things have moved etc.
As with all things new, a little time and patience should have it sorted.
Along with some tweaking from the publishers - I have read some of the feedback in the paper.

I have been reading the reduced size Age in Melbourne. It is much easier to read / hold / turn the pages.....I do not know if I am just imagining this but the stories seem to be shorter - not as many words! It might just be my perception but it does seem that the reports are shorter to fit onto the smaller pages. It also seems that stories now do not continue on to other pages.

However overall I am a fan of the more compact size, but I am still reliahing the larger format on weekends....when there is plenty of time to spread them out around the kitchen table.

I want newspapers to continue forever......I have a job where I am on not at a computer or desk all day and do not have the luxury of flicking through an on-line newspaper. I relish flicking through the paper during my lunch break.

I am an long time avid reader of SMH and I do not mind the new size. Both are acceptable to me although the smaller size makes it easier to read on public transport and without annoying nearby passengers (as other Members have commented already).

Chris
  • 8th Mar 2013 05:32pm

I haven't seen them but I think it's a good idea. The larger size puts me off The Age more in favour of the Herald Sun and mostly due to the size.

Currently I do most of my news reading online because it is free, up to date and always available.

Michael
  • 8th Mar 2013 05:11pm

The Melbourne Age:Not to date as it is not a paper I buy but read in the clubs I eat meals but only the Herald-Sun has been there in multiple copies. Strange?

Peter
  • 8th Mar 2013 04:25pm

Doesn't make much difference. Smaller print makes it harder to read. There are less pull outs and less colour. Some sections are difficult to find. Easier to read because of size. In fact, I seem to read it quicker than normal!

I saw the new Age newspaper on the office kitchen table this afternoon. It looks awful. Bring back the traditional newspaper please, as I certainly wouldn’t want to read this new format. Its not real! I know books and magazines are now smaller on the tablets and ereaders but please, leave our newspaper alone.

  • 8th Mar 2013 02:35pm

We get The Age. I don't really mind that its been re-sized but as above, its frustrating that they don't have as many pull out sections as they used to. Now some of the family can't have read the parts they liked if we are all up at the same time. As its only really easy to read for one or two people. The sport section should be a pull out section and I liked flipping the main section to the back to have easy access to the life style and comics areas. :(

I agree that the revamp of the website seems cluttered though.

Jo
  • 8th Mar 2013 01:59pm

I haven't seen it yet but think it will be much better - it was just too hard to read unless you were lucky enough to have a big uncluttered table to sit at and spread out.

bigal
  • 8th Mar 2013 01:41pm

As a reader of 'The Age' I liked the way the broadsheet version could be separated into sections. The new format is bulky and tends to curl up of it is delivered and rolled in plastic. The content is still good.

I haven't personally seen the new SMH format, but they've been talking about it for ages and I know they've done it to others overseas. It's a great idea - so much easier to hold and read, but also so as not to intrude on other's space. I don't think the quality will suffer as they have the same contributors and editors. It's good to be able to read the news online, but always nice to be able to hold a real paper.

I didn't expect to like it at all, but in fact I don't mind it, although I think it has been dumbed down a bit. The thing that really irritates me is actually the subject of a letter that I had published in The Age today (!!!) - the paper is now too small, even when opened flat, to do anything useful under a tray of cat litter!!!!

it's interesting that you mention "dumbed down" de1. I can see what you mean but I think they've done something quite clever and frankly not a moment too soon - they've realised that corruption, tragedy, disaster and shock value no longer constitute the news. I applaud them. Lets stop shining a spotlight on things that make us sad, worried, frustrated, angry and frightened. I want to hear about what's working, what's inspiring, what's joyful and, when it's tragic or broken, what's to be done about it. Then again I could just be giving them too much credit ;-)
