What do you think of the new smaller size Sydney Morning Herald and The Age? Have you picked it up yet? Is it easier to read? Do you think it will be as good a quality as the old version? Or do you prefer to read news online?

I don't think there is the same amount of content now. I am annoyed in Good Living part on Tuesdays that so much other information is available on-line. I had a digital subscription but gave it because it was too hard to use and when I complained they said "why don't you Google the topic?"!!

I guess the stigma of tabloid vs broadsheet is gone :-)
Swinky-Dink
Much more convenient while travelling. I like it :)

No i have not, maybe more advertising is needed?

These papers are not readily available where i am. I prefer to read the news online as i can access it easily at my convenience.

The smaller size does make it much easier to read especially in crowded areas. It is also less tiring to read when holding the newspapers up. I am sure the quality would be the same after all it is only the size of the newspaper that has changed.
armstrong
No i havn't

I prefer broadsheet, though tabloid is easier to read in confined spaces. I'm a newspaper snob from way back, and I have always associated tabloids with exploitation and gutter journalism.
With the Fairfax press, I don't believe the change in appearance will change content one iota.
About time I changed my elitist attitudes?

i read it in the work ute now the boys dont complain about no room to move

I really like.So much easier to read on public transport

1. The size is ok
2. Yes
3. About the same, maybe a bit easier
4. It is a newspaper. They don't need to last too long
5. I also read news online

I stopped buying the SMH after 35 years of enjoying the braodsheet, can't stand the new format I will not buy it . I used to cycle down to my country store very early like 6am and enjoy the ride to pick up my paper now I don't ride or read it any more. The one thing I loved was sitting on my porch reading a paper and I would take hours and then when it was about 8am go to work. my one thing that was so precious and a real treat to start the day and its taken away , not to mnetion the standard of the jouro's now. the articles I did read a few times all the crap you expect in the tele, and they repeat exactly the same stories days and days again and again, not just recaping they actual print word for word and pretend its todays news. Sorry SMH your gone .I only buy it on saturdays now the full braod sheet. wont touch online nothing beats the real thing of relaxing with an actual paper . bring back the broady or I will start readin ght eright wing conservative liberal paper THE AUSTRALIAN seriously

Hi Looklively! Yes, I prefer the new smaller size. It is easier to read, to handle. More practical.

im not from sydney so wouldnt know lol

I guess I like that it presumably saves some trees but, well, there's something special about the impracticality of reading a broadform and now it doesn't feel right.

I have a subscription to the Herald, and sort of miss the larger format. I find I read the smaller size quicker, probably because I skip a lot more stories. I now tend to read more news online. I realise that the smaller format was a necessity, as print newspapers are becoming so much more expensive with a smaller reader base. They will probably disappear over the next ten years and we will have to pay subs just to read news online.

I really like the new version of the Age newspaper. Its so much easier to read. I think they could improve it more by making it smaller on the weekends as well.
Anonymous
Not seen it
Debrezda
I have not yet read the new smaller versions:-
If the contain similar content to that previously published then they should continue to do well as a smaller broadsheet publication.
If they drop or change the content of the new papers then they will be no different from the tabloids that they have previously mocked as gutter press and will deserve the scathing comments that will come their way as the hipocrates that they have become.

I bought The Age on Wed first time in a while, I found the smaller sheets manageable, but didn't enjoy the stories being split constantly follow on was on page 5 or 7 or 9. Also found not nearly as much news and didn't find ads at all. Will have another try on the weekend.

I love the new size. It looks so inviting . I picked one up and read it. It felt like a different experiuence. It is fantastic. Much nmore chic and readable in tight places like cafes. Excellent choice.

We have been getting the AGE for 52 years. My father had it for 40 years..
We like it because:
Articles and stories are easier to find in the lesser page space.
Easier to carry and takes less space on a table .
Seems brighter and more engaging.

No. I prefer reading news online these days!

Haven't seen the new print version - it would have to be easier in a smaller format, although I hate to think what is needed to carry Saturday's one home.
Not greatly impressed with the new SMH website though.

Means of public transportation vehicle while off work to spend time with boarding and excellent.

I don't really think it affects me as I read online and it's the Sydney morning herald which really doesn't come near me as I am in Victoria
Bad_manners
Haven't because I don't buy them. I get SMH free on my iPad and that's enough for me.

The size is right but he content is poorly presented.

I have seen the SMH. Love the new size - it's way easier to manage.
I am having some difficulty navigating the new format.
Things have moved etc.
As with all things new, a little time and patience should have it sorted.
Along with some tweaking from the publishers - I have read some of the feedback in the paper.
Ed
Yes, like the Age size for handling and still good balanced comment.

I have been reading the reduced size Age in Melbourne. It is much easier to read / hold / turn the pages.....I do not know if I am just imagining this but the stories seem to be shorter - not as many words! It might just be my perception but it does seem that the reports are shorter to fit onto the smaller pages. It also seems that stories now do not continue on to other pages.
However overall I am a fan of the more compact size, but I am still reliahing the larger format on weekends....when there is plenty of time to spread them out around the kitchen table.
I want newspapers to continue forever......I have a job where I am on not at a computer or desk all day and do not have the luxury of flicking through an on-line newspaper. I relish flicking through the paper during my lunch break.

It's much better now because I can read the paper on public transport without knocking somebody's eye out when turning a page. I will read the Age more frequently now.

Im a long term Age subscriber, I cannot get used to the new format. It does not seem as in depth, pages appear crowded and I keep thinking Im reading the Herald Sun, hopefully I get used to it
helen40
I like the new size of the age, but must admit to missing being able to pull lt apart into sections.
Raj
The new format is convienient and easy to handle. Paper feels thin and some of the regular columns are 'compacted'.
khnoufy
I am an long time avid reader of SMH and I do not mind the new size. Both are acceptable to me although the smaller size makes it easier to read on public transport and without annoying nearby passengers (as other Members have commented already).
Chris
I haven't seen them but I think it's a good idea. The larger size puts me off The Age more in favour of the Herald Sun and mostly due to the size.
Currently I do most of my news reading online because it is free, up to date and always available.
Michael
The Melbourne Age:Not to date as it is not a paper I buy but read in the clubs I eat meals but only the Herald-Sun has been there in multiple copies. Strange?
gumnut
For train & bus travellers it is what has been needed for Ages(pun).
Peter
Doesn't make much difference. Smaller print makes it harder to read. There are less pull outs and less colour. Some sections are difficult to find. Easier to read because of size. In fact, I seem to read it quicker than normal!

I saw the new Age newspaper on the office kitchen table this afternoon. It looks awful. Bring back the traditional newspaper please, as I certainly wouldn’t want to read this new format. Its not real! I know books and magazines are now smaller on the tablets and ereaders but please, leave our newspaper alone.
coversharvey
No, online is the way to go
duchau
yes it's a handy size. l like the design of the paper
Fiona_13
We get The Age. I don't really mind that its been re-sized but as above, its frustrating that they don't have as many pull out sections as they used to. Now some of the family can't have read the parts they liked if we are all up at the same time. As its only really easy to read for one or two people. The sport section should be a pull out section and I liked flipping the main section to the back to have easy access to the life style and comics areas. :(
I agree that the revamp of the website seems cluttered though.
Jo
I haven't seen it yet but think it will be much better - it was just too hard to read unless you were lucky enough to have a big uncluttered table to sit at and spread out.
bigal
As a reader of 'The Age' I liked the way the broadsheet version could be separated into sections. The new format is bulky and tends to curl up of it is delivered and rolled in plastic. The content is still good.
Allan

The Age is so much better than previously it will now give the Herald Sun some much needed hurry up & not before time either
DK
The Age is a great newspaper. If this is the only way for it to survive, so be it. The quality of the articles does not depend on the size of the page.
dylo
I like the new Age format, so much easier on public transport as others have said. But I do not like the new website format, so cluttered and frustrating to find stories.
Mandy
I haven't personally seen the new SMH format, but they've been talking about it for ages and I know they've done it to others overseas. It's a great idea - so much easier to hold and read, but also so as not to intrude on other's space. I don't think the quality will suffer as they have the same contributors and editors. It's good to be able to read the news online, but always nice to be able to hold a real paper.
unibomba17
No i haven't seen it as i read most of my news online. Will efinately take a look though. Sounds great and i would definately prefer a smaller sizing
groucho wiggle
morning looklively! does the ink still rub off on fingers and white jeans? I haven't touched a paper copy (or worn white jeans) for years but I like their new online format - clean, modern and very easy to navigate on my 7" tablet.
jock
Like.
Patria
I prefer The Age to be this size, it's a great paper, with real news, and now it's even easier to manouevre in morning peak train travel.
jock
So true Tricia, a very better format, easy to read in any situation..About time..
de1
I didn't expect to like it at all, but in fact I don't mind it, although I think it has been dumbed down a bit. The thing that really irritates me is actually the subject of a letter that I had published in The Age today (!!!) - the paper is now too small, even when opened flat, to do anything useful under a tray of cat litter!!!!
groucho wiggle
it's interesting that you mention "dumbed down" de1. I can see what you mean but I think they've done something quite clever and frankly not a moment too soon - they've realised that corruption, tragedy, disaster and shock value no longer constitute the news. I applaud them. Lets stop shining a spotlight on things that make us sad, worried, frustrated, angry and frightened. I want to hear about what's working, what's inspiring, what's joyful and, when it's tragic or broken, what's to be done about it. Then again I could just be giving them too much credit ;-)
graeme2251
Still getting used to the new size but it is much more easier to read in confined spaces.
mrnobrakes
I picked up the SMH yesterday, much easier to navigate, and less likely to accidentally punch the person next to you when turning the page. I can't see why the quality will drop... I don't mind reading news online or in print, i have no preference.
BernardMP
No, never seen the smaller Age but I've heard about it. I think newspapers should stick to the old-fashioned broadsheets. However, the Age online version was revamped this week and I think personally its NOT for the better as stories seem more muddled and the whole website looks more cluttered.
magpie1
I agree Bernard.....I'm trying to give the SMH website a chance (maybe I just find it difficult because its different)....but I'm finding it hard to navigate to the articles/sections I like
boppa99
I have been waiting for this Dream of the Age & Smh to become this Size Of Telegraph for Ages,
Now lets hope the other Company Does the same for the Australian.
These papers have been So Annoying the way they open up,
To me its Been a Big Wake up Call!
Gerry1945
Has anyone see the new...seen... Yes saves jumping into others personal space when on public transport.
barbiedoll99
"The Age" is so much better, and easier to manage in a crowded train. Why didn't they do this a long time a go.
Now I will buy it more often.
jock
I actually phoned the age about 9 years ago, told them to change their format to, or similar to, the herald sun..they politely brushed me off...the pigeons have come home to roost. I now buy the Agw..
Razorfish
I like it. I read the SMH on the train on the way home and it is much easier to read.
