I don't remember swap cards from school as I was busy in the Juinior Red Cross fund raising. I entered swimathons, sold raffle tickets, did duty on a kiosk at the local hospital, helped elderly patients with letter writing, reading and errands. Also at our local outdoor picture show we sold drinks and snacks to raise funds for a refrigerator for two needy people.. Apart from this I did ballet, played the piano accordian, did gymnastics, swimming training, played tennis, stamp collecting and started a club that held an elephant stall with proceeds going to the Red Cross.
As an adult I did decoupage, jewelery making, bead making, folk art, sewing, and paper beading . I am now doing card making and teach it too.

I am kept very busy with crafting - mainly cardmaking, scrapbooking and papercraft. which I also teach.
In the past I've tried just about any craft which has come my way - knitting, crochet, patchwork, applique, spinning, weaving, painting. Some I still dabble in and others I found I did so much of that there wasn't a need to continue however I do pull my knitting out if a friend is having a baby.
I don't sew anymore as I have found it much cheaper to buy an outfit than purchase a pattern and material.

Some of my hobby's are like those of others. Like the crocheting (i learned how to feom my mum, she is left handed i am right) or knitting if not doing my uaual surveys as a baser habby. But my main hobby is tattoos, be they ideas i draw myself of images from the vast options on line or in the studio (i am not a do it yourself tattooist that would be wrong) so yeah i can wear my hobby :)

I used to collect stamps as a teenager I also have a lot of hobbies including making jewellery, knitting, embroidery, Australian history, gardening and researching family history.
Which is the most interesting and surprising as I just found a relative who was in the first world war and where they lived the council has pictures of all who served in the first world war from their council district and their photograph is on the wall in the local town hall!
Anyone else research family history? Had any surprises you did not expect to find?

Which is...

My niece found some of my late Dad's war records from WW11 on her Iphone. We knew he was injured in England as a watch tower he was on was bombed. My niece found out the month that it happened, where etc. My cousin on my Dad's side of the family is currently doing the family history and we are going to catch up in a few weeks.

The good old days of doing jigsaw puzzles back then I was still young, innocent and carefree. Now that I'm older my hobby is to keep fit and healthy as well as looking good.

One of my hobbies is volunteering. I also enjoy music (playing and listening to) and watching interesting videos online. I guess in terms of high culture "old school" hobbies, I enjoy writing by hand and addressing letters to my future self. I love puzzles (especially the satisfaction that comes out of completing a 1000 piece puzzle).

I've just learnt quilling and love it! I've made quite a few bookmarks, fridge magnets, and cards using this and it really relaxes me. I also love cardmaking, and do a little jewellery making.

I crochet when I get bored of all these and also love crosswords!! Sometimes I think I'd be better off sticking to just one or two hobbies as the crocheting and crosswords never get finished! Ha ha ha!

I collect Converse shoes, I take photos often with my camera.. As a child I collected rocks.. which included gems and fossils.
I still have most of that collection.
I keep birds for pets and am looking into breeding them as a hobby.

A friend of a relative of mine used to breed budgies. A friendly word of advice. Try not to let them interbreed too much as eventually they get medical conditions, like their beaks growing too long and they have trouble eating. We had to get our budgie's beak trimmed even though he had lots of suitable hard things to gnaw on. Apparently it can occur with other breeds too. He also had a genetic digestion problem.

One of my hobbies is knitting beanies to be distributed to cancer patients at Oncology Depts at Hospitals.
I also knit Trauma Teddies for use in Ambulances to pacify injured or sick babies/toddlers during transport. It also occupies the child while treatment is being given, keeping "little hands" busy. I have now been told that they are also used in the Emergency Depts. at some hosptials.

You are awesome Blossom. That's a terrific idea for the fabric dolls. I have a few friends who sew so might ask around and see if our local hospital is in need of any. Thanks

I believe a service club may be involved an have a pattern for them. It was quite a few years ago. The hospitals may be able to tell you where they get them from. I saw it in a magazine. It may have been in a New Idea. If I find a pattern I will put another comment on here. I'm not sure whether my now late Mum kept the pattern or not.
I don't it was SA Hospital that was listed but I am sure they would probably use them in all states

I have been given a lot of wool. One lot I gave to another lady to knit as it was fluffy and made me sneeze every time I handled it. I don't know whter or not they still do, but some childrens' hospitals used to use plain whiite fabric dolls to show the little ones what their treatment was going to be. They also let them draw the faces on. Most draw the mouth that they are either happy or sad; or other things that they want to express. I have never made them as I never use white material to have remnants to use, and I am not a good sewer. Where I live now a lot of residents have donated their surplus wool to be knitted for various charities. I go to a charity craft group. At the moment some are knitting beanies for a 3rd world country which has very cold weather and some are knitting blankets from part balls of wool for the homeless. I am currently knitting a couple of cuddlies for a baby due in late May, the Dad has left and is on the dole so child support will be almost nil.

That is so wonderful. I have a few friends who knit bears for children taken by ambulance and also for young children having a stay in hospital. My home seems to be the main area for anyone wanting to get rid of excess craft items because between my contacts and those of friends we are always swapping or giving away yarn, material etc.
It's so much better than throwing it in the rubbish.
