Dog friendly holiday in Tasmania?

I'm planning a holiday to Tasmania and we'd love to take our dog with us. I'm just not sure how practical it would be - I think there are a lot of National Parks we would have to avoid because they don't allow dogs.
Can anyone recommend any dog friendly accommodation or beaches/walks we could take the dog on?
Thanks!

I live in Tasmania in the Huon Valley. I know of dog friendly beach at dover, there is a dog friendly camping ground in Geeveston but it is not powered you would need to have your own van. There are lots of dog friendly camping grounds. There is also one at Franklin which is next to a dog off lead park. I know there are lots of dog friendly places but I do not have a list of all of them. We moved here just over 3 years ago and we came with 2 dogs. You need to have up to date vaccinations and you need to a specific worm treatment that must be done close to your trip and have a vet sign a document with proof of the treatment. Keep the packaging. It has to be given by a vet because the vet must sign a form to certify treatment. if that is not done the dog goes into quarantine. We came over on the boat. I would not fly a dog anywhere as it is just not fair on the dog. As to dog friendly hotels etc. I do not know if there are any but there are websites that cover accommodation which allows dogs.

It is hydatid tape worm and it is easy to do but you must have a vet do it and certify it is done.

when we go away we look up the 'stayz' site. they have pet friendly recommendations. we just had a lovely holiday in Brisbane - we were able to take our dog, the accommodation was lovely, bella could roam outside, parks were near by and bella loved it and we were in the heart of brissie. I recommend 'stayz'

There are some good camping and holiday books that list all the places you can go. Try one by puffing billy productions. You can usually get these books at your camping and fishing shops

it is a good idea to leave ur pet at home because of the restrictions of pets especially dogs

I suggest you check with the Tassie Tourist Centre if you have one.
If you are a member of a Motor Association they may be able to help you or advise you who to contact. Some caravan parks allow dogs if tied up and walked only on a leash. A few of the big ones actually have kennels with small runs on site --don't know about Tas. though.

Hi annacathryn. good to have a campervan and drive from Devonport, where the ferry arrives, and head along the North West Coast, take your time to stay in the little towns. Between Ulverstone and Penguin. take the Scenic Route along the coast , stay overnight at Goat island reserve. Penguin,( where there is an overnight stop on the beach front where dogs are allowed on the leash), and then on to Haybridge, a reserve also beachfront, on the mouth of the river.
These areas are only within an hour or so from Devonport, which is handy if you are waiting to catch the ferry back to Melbourne. Dogs are all ok along this N.W coast.
In Tasmania dogs are not allowed to travel unrestrained in cars. They must be in a dog carry box, or attached to a harness/seatbelt attachment, in the rear seat I believe. Also they are not to be shut in cars unattended.
I have a campervan with a sun roof that slides open. This is ideal in summer. I'd be lost without it, and would have no other type of conveyance.
North of Launceston, at Beauty Point Tourist Park, campers often have their well behaved dogs.(by arrangement) Red Bill Pt Reserve is popular as dogs are allowed on the lead. This is next to the Beauty Pt Tourist Park.
Dogs are often seen walking along the beach and the quiet areas around the beaches and foreshore at Beauty Point.

Dogs going to Tasmania have to be wormed with a treatment for tapeworm (hydatid tapeworm) within 48 hrs if I remember correctly.Just have the packet to show the quarantine inspector. I called in at a vets clinic on the way to Melbourne to catch the'Spirit of Tasmania' ferry across.
Tasmania is Hidatis free

Hire a camper van and take your dog over by Boat. You have to drive down to Melbourne to get on board but they have very good pet accommodation. Dozens of people do it that way. There are so many places to stay across and around Tasmania that you rarely have to stay on National Park or in a motel although some on the West Coast cater for pets. There are free camping areas right around the island. We just finished the west coast and we could have had a pet anywhere. Not so much on the north coast but around St Helens there are some great free camping areas right next to the beach and the holiday makers looked as if they were set up for good -- with their pets. Get on google earth and you will see the Council Reserve areas where you can set up for free. Make sure your campervan has shower, toilet etc and you are home.

How do you intend getting to Tassie with your dog?
Any idea on costings for Pet transport?

A dog was once put on a plane at Launceston for Melbourne. Some time later it arrived in Vienna. I just stay at home with mine. I think he's happier with that.

We've more or less given up on this idea now because we adopted a second dog (a wolfhound cross) and so the costs became prohibitive. When we only had one dog we were planning to fly to Tassie from Sydney. I discovered that Virgin Australia will fly dogs and they charge based on weight I believe.
I am however intending to visit Tasmania without the dogs later this year when my Mum flies over from the UK. Can't wait!
