I have a caged chicken farm next to my work and it is horrible.
The noises they are making, they are so so stressed i dont know how the workers can stand it.
I dont buy caged eggs but i wish i could do more to help them.
It really fustrates me they are suffering so badly and will never know any better.

Anyone who puts a bird in a cage should be locked in a car for the rest of their lives.

I empathise with you as I could not stand to work next to that either. I only buy free range eggs & the only way we will get changes made is to boycott anything but free range. Coles is making a great effort to stock more free range eggs and it will have "sow stall free" pork by 2014.
If you want to do more for the chickens maybe get involved with Animals Australia who work tirelessly against factory farming & all its cruelty & abuses. Writing to the major supermarkets stating that you will only buy free range is also good as they do respond to customer awareness & pressure.

Factory farming of all animals is an abomination and should be outlawed. The fact that farmers make money from their misery does not lessen their suffering one iota.

CAGE THE OWNERS in cages with the same conditions and relative size-like 1metre square!

Perhaps what you hear is the hens when they lay eggs. The hens I have make a lot of noise, talk to each other, and in general DO correspond with each other. My chooks are free range, but it is hard to tell the difference between freerange, barn and cage birds because all eggs look the same.

I believe the owners should be stuck in a cage with the hens and see what it is like to cope with for a whole year and have the light 24 hours a day. It is animal cruelty and it everyone boycotted buying cage birds eggs then there would be no more. We used to have 500 hens on the farm and they lived in 5 large hen houses with roosts and during the day would get out into the paddock to feed on the grass and scratch for bugs. People used to come and get the eggs from 50 kms away and they were simply beautiful birds and would come up to us because they trusted us. There were no featherless birds and they were FREE

I suppose like most people I do not think about it, but in your situation you are forced to think of it everyday! It is really cruel keeping them in cages where they cannot run around, it should be made illegal like any other acts of cruelty on animals.......just because we eat them and they are not a domestic pet does not make it okay. Everybody should stop eating caged chook eggs in protest and stick with free range.

Hi Kiri,
I wouldn't want to be working or even living near that. It's so sad that companies treat animals in that way just for a profit.
I think you have to be a certain type of person to work in an environment like that where animals are basically tortured. It really has to stop, but it won't until everyone stops buying caged eggs. It amazes me though that people still do, and realistically, they aren't that much cheaper than the free range eggs.
I love animals and have learnt to appreciate their importance in our lives. I am a vegetarian and love that too. I eat a range of fantastic products that give me all the protein, iron, vitamins etc etc that I need. Therefore, I like reading posts such as yours where there is a glimmer of hope that some people still feel some compassion and that the chickens in this case deserve to live properly.
Chickens aren't stupid either; they are able to recognise at least 100 different faces. :)
