Soccer, or football as it's known in the rest of world, is up there as one of the most played sports in Australia. It's around double Aussie Rules. Why then are there so little public places with nets for kids to play? Far less than Australian Rules goals..

AFL is a marketing juggernaut with resources to put into promotion and grassroots teams. AFL occupy the Australian psyche for sport and that is why there are more grounds for AFL in the country it began in. The AFL competition is highly organised and competitive with no need to look outside the country for teams to contest.

Unfortunately, for soccer Australians don't find it as exciting as AFL and that is why the money hasn't been put into it. It is difficult to operate world games from a base such as Australia as it is so far away and the number of high level games you can play against other countries is limited.
