Home brand vs named brand

Are there brands that you used to buy that are no longer in your local supermarket? What do you think of all these 'home brands'? Are they just as good as the named brands, are they cheaper, or are you still hankering after something in particular that just seems to have disappeared from the shelves? Give us your opinion.

Jan says: I am getting increasingly fed up with the proliferation of home brands. I refuse to buy them on principle. It was ok years ago when they were just a cheaper alternative for the basics like sugar, flour etc. Now the home brands are definitely pushing the named brands off the shelves. If not disappearing altogether, they are being forced to narrow their range to be competitive. Also I dislike the sneaky way the home brands go about it by using the same colours, designs etc as the named brands so that sometimes you actually buy them by mistake. I don't really care if the quality is as good, it's the whole underhanded way of doing it that irks me.
