Considering they entitled to use lethal force, and are equipped to do so, should police officers be subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing. After all you can't work in mining or even local government without being tested and with the amount of accidents and shootings the police are involved in should not this be the first order of the day?

Of course Police should be subject to drug and alcohol testing. In fact they are in a very responsible position and we all rely on them in emergencies so they should be subject to testing regularly. We can't have rules for some and rules for others.

Yes, there is a very good reason that the defence force does it. It is so that the operations it conducts are legal and moral.. Makes people accountable for their actions

I totally agree I worked for local government in the ACT in charge of the water and wastewater supply systems and we were subject to random testing so why shouln't anyone who has the ability to harm the general public be held to the same standards

Law enforcement officers are drug tested. They have random testing that is conducted frequently. It is random because if they knew they had to give a urine sample upon turning up to work, and they had been drinking or abusing drugs, they would just buy a clean sample from someone else in order to pass the test!

Yes this should be in place, we as citizens trust the Police and look up at them as Role Models, we cant have Officers who take drug's or consume alcohol on duty as it would oppose the very reason for Police.

Definately, even for the protection for themselves and working partener as they can put themselves into dangerous situations and need all their wits about them.

absolutely nette, if you cant drive a vehicle while affected by drugs/alcohol the commonsense would say that if you drive in situations like Police do or carry weapons, then you should be drug/alcohol free.
