How often do you walk along the street with rubbish in your hand and can not find a rubbish bin anywhere in site

its really frustrating, seeing rubbish everywhere. broken glass, dog poo, household items dumped on streets or vacant bushland. there are no excuses. everyone is responsible. if there isn't a bin, then unfortunately, carry the rubbish home, or to your car. Local councils need more bins and more emptying of bins.

I will not walk along the street with rubbish because of the following reasons:
1. We have to pay fine to the government
2. Keep our society clean, neat and tidy

I think because in a lot of places wind & birds make a huge mess, other areas there were cases if young hooligans setting bins on fire. Just can't win, I make sure I pack all my rubbish & kids rubbish & take it home or to a bin near by

This is one thing i dislike, it is one thing to not have enough bins placed around but another to not have a rubbish bin at all in the park, like the one in lakemba next to the community garden. have to walk up to haldon st to throw away any rubbish.

I live a ways out of the city, but on the drive in or out I notice mainly Macdonalds/Hungry Jacks rubbish strewn along the roadside, as well as the usual drink cans. I wish I could nab those people doing that. It really annoys me. What's wrong in keeping it in your car til you get home?

I think that people are just too lazy and i also think it has alot to do with the younger ones you have a good look at Mac donald's or hungry jack there is always rubbish on the ground where the cars have been parked , i have also been behind a car that throw a lit smoke out the window lucky for me i changed lanes as i had the roof to my car down people just dont care like they used to. even when you walk though the parks where the kids play not only is there rubbish but dog shit as well one day i watched a guy walking his dog and it came up my drive way and shit right in the middle so i said so that he could hear me i hope your gonna pick that up he looked at me as if to say why should i and he walked away and left it sitting in my drive way when i go out and i cant find a bin i just hold on to it until i can find one

I can only agree with both of you. One of my pet hates is the smokers outside the entrances to Shopping Malls, it stinks of smoke which you have to walk through then the buts squashed on the floor. If they are not picked by the cleaners they get blown into the gutters and then washed into rivers and the sea.
Even when they have bins they still leave them on the floor

this happens alot and I guess you shouldnt need a rubbish bin if you are just walking, but times have changed it seems people are less caring toward our environment. people are becoming more absorbed in themselves due to the daily pressures of their environments that they dont care about anyone else or anything else.

I agree as a tour guide I am always finding it hard to dispose of rubbish. It is very annoying. The result is people just throw it out the window, or dump it anywhere. The excuse by council and rubbish parks are that the bins attract rubbish........
Funny that should be the attention, and then they need to remove the rubbish, annoying.

this happens to me quiet often,we need more rubbish bins around to keep australia clean.of cause there are a few people around that probably would still throw their rubish on the ground.

I have friends who go for a daily walk. This couple carries a plastic bag and pick up two pieces of rubbish every walk. Quite a simple thing but effective, more people could easily do this. I do now.

My issue is with the train stations in Sydney. They removed the bins because of the issue of bombs and the olympics. It is now 2011 and the olympic games were over 10 years ago when are they going to bring back the bins on the platforms and at ticket barriers so that people have somewhere to put their rubbish in stead of just dropping it.

yeah, right too much rubbish but too little rubbish bin , that more often than not u have to put your own rubbish like gum wrapper in your own pocket or in your bag to be thrown out later when u get home. But what if you got had a take away coffee ? Can u put it in your bag? Geez! !!

yeah you can never find one when you need it, then people or the council complain about the rubbish . You know why there is not so many is because the council or gov has to pay someone to empty them

I think there would be less rubbish along the roadside etc if all states in Australia had the recycling program where you are paid for cans etc. South Australia has this system and you don't see any cans, bottles etc along the roadsides or in parks or on streets. This should be uniform for all of Australia. It would solve a lot of the rubbish problem..

I dont think there are enough bins in public areas and that there is no point to having them if they are not frequently emptied. However, if there is no bin I feel people should take their rubbish home with them. Unfortunately, people frequently dont for what ever reasons.

It is frustrating when you can't find a rubbish bin.
I've noticed in other countries not only are there more trash cans but they have recycling ones, so essentially a bin with four slots, one for paper, plastic & cans, and food scraps, and a 'other'

It's even more frustrating when there are bins supplied and still litter everywhere - In this case I make a point of picking up rubbish (especially in parks) and disposing of it in the supplied bins.

Actually I have found having grandchildren now that if they receive messages early enough at school it seems to stick in their heads & they tend to nag at their parents to do the right thing with the rubbish. My grandchildren are in their teens mostly now but the message that you recycle and clear up seems to be still with them. I have noticed they tend take they rubbish as they go and do the recycling if there are bins about. It does seem always to come back to the availability of those bins.

Ladies a do have a gripe with women and they way they leave Public Toilets. I can imagine I will have ladies now ready and up in arms. It is only women and girls that use Womens Public Toilets, except for the odd occasion that they have had to take a young child in their.
I really do object to going into a Womans Public Toilet to find it is in a mess. I could oofend many by stating exactly the sort of messes I have found I will not as I have a delicate stomach and feel badly enough about thinking of writing it never mind actually doing so.
Please anyone who has an accident, to put it politely, clean up after yourself. If you cannot no-one will feel badly about you if you report. Take the cowards way out if necessary and say you found it like that . Do something other than leave tyhem in a state we others cannot use them.
Ladies with babies PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE DIRTY NAPPIES ON THE FLOOR.
Take them home if there is nothing for you put them in or again, there usually is an attendant. It really is very unkind to leave them just on the floor. Mothers have to take young children there, just imagine how you would feel if it was your child who finds it?
Also last one Ladies who leaves all the toilet paper on the floor. It costs money also. WE are lucky it is provided, it comes out of the rates and so does all the cleaning up.
Also STOP filling the toilet bowl with reems of toilet paper. If you do not like sitting on it carry wipes but you block the toilets for the rest of us. If these ideas are carried out we would not mind HAVING to use but dreading the Public Toilets. Make the Effort please, for all of us.

Any person who values the environment would take their rubbish home if there was no available room in a bin,not leave it on top. After all, how much rubbish does one have after a picnic or barbecue ? What annoys me are the people who toss bottles, tins etc all along the roads and in to our waterways. If the councils have to clean it up, it costs the ratepayer and the money could have been spent elsewhere.

I know the feeling as it happens everywhere. It seems that people do the right thing and put rubbish in the bins that are available but they become overfull and not emptied on a regular basis and rubbish is left to fly about. I now carry a plastic bag with me whenever I go out so if I can't find a bin I put my rubbish in the bag and dispose of it at home. It is better than rubbishing our beautiful country.

I believe it is a 3 way thing. Yes people should be responsible for their own rubbish and dispose of it cleanly, be it in a bin or by taking it home. However, as so many have said the bins just are...

Our rates have to cover so much that is needed around our Towns & Cities. WE cannot expect other people to pick up & look after us. WE have to take are of ourselves we know the right thing to do , do it. Occasionally it does no harm to pick the person to speak to who is leaving rubbish.
I am not suggesting that we pick a gang of youths but if you spoke to a family who are leaving rubbish you may find the kids who are being taught at school will start picking it up. I actually saw once kids telling their parents that rubbish could not be left lying about they had been taught at school. Teach they children & do the correct thing yourself.
My favourite hate is the smoker who empties their ashtray on the road. My younger brother went tto the garbage bin on the kerbside picked it up & put the rubbish in the car, He is old but big. The driver was more shocked than anything,I bet he never did that again though. I am not in any physical state to run but tat say I was ready to try. The fellow cleared everything & a small crowd cheered him.LOL

Chicken and all other contributors to this post, I agree with some of your posts but not all. Firstly it is NOT council responsibility to dispose of YOUR rubbish. It is YOUR responsibility to do so in an orderly and safe fashion. I have taught my kids to carry a small plastic bag on their holidays and they are teaching theirs to do the same. if you cannot find a proper place to dispose of your rubbish immediately than take it back with you to your car and dispose of it at your accommodation. It is not hard to have a clean and friendly environment if everyone does their bit. Bend down and pick up the odd bit of rubbish yourself instead of complaining about it. I used to walk my dog along a main road twice a day and pick up a shopping bag full of rubbish a day, nobody asked me to, nobody thanked me for it, but I had the satisfaction that 3km of footpath and verges were free of rubbish for while and the adjoining bush was pristine. It is up to all of US to keep our country clean.

I believe it is a 3 way thing. Yes people should be responsible for their own rubbish and dispose of it cleanly, be it in a bin or by taking it home. However, as so many have said the bins just are not there to use or are already full. So that is one way. The other 2 are up to our local councils or whatever. There should be enough bins there to handle the amount of rubbish created in that area and they should be reasonably close to where the people gather. Then, if nescesary they should be emptied more often so that fresh rubbish that goes in is secure. A lot of the stuff that is loose is not because people didn't bin it, it is because the bin was overfull it blew out again! We pay rates for this, why isn't it done?

That is the first thing, or maybe I should say the third. The first 2 are that councils should (a) set enough bins out for the amount of rubbish that people have at area and (b) empty them more often so what rubbish is put in is secure. Part of the problem is not that people don't put their rubbish in the bin, it is that because the bin is overfull the rubbish is blown out of it.

I too always carry a light plastic bag in my shoulder bag and carry my rubbish either home or to the next recepticle.

I do wonder however why people don't push their own rubbish lower into a public bin. Often they're overflowing yet there is space aplenty lower down the bin which could be compacted - preventing the filthy looking overflow which often spoils our public places. This could be done quite cleanly by doing it with whatever it is you are throwing out. You're already touching this so it wouldn't be touching other peoples rubbish.

I think they are afraid f pushing their hands too far down into rubbish containers because you cannot be sure how well they have been cleaned out by the collectors. Very often you see lots of wet rubbish & lots of mouldy old food left at the bottom of the containers where it has been collecting for ever.
These bins need to be cleaned properly & disinfected but the Councils would probably say it would be too time consuming & therefor greater expense.

Actually I have a huge gripe about rubbish. Until fairly recently I lived in the country but the road through our small town was the route to a very popular Seaside town.
To my disgust it was not unusual to see used plastic baby nappies. They had obviously been thrown from car windows as the cars drove by. Who did these nappies throwers think was going to clean up the dreadful rubbish they could not handle.?

I go walking every Monday morning with 3 others then after our walk we sit and have morning tea where there are tables, seats bbq areas and bins. It never ceases to amaze me how filthy people are. There are lots of rubbish bins around and yet people leave their rubbish lying around all over the place. We have even found uneaten food left on the bbq's or the ground as well as graffiti. It is such a lovely spot for people to walk and picnic otherwise.

My favourite complaint is along the beaches there are rarely enough rubbish bins. People try to do the right thing put their rubbish all over the top of the bin and it falls in the ground where the other people have had to leave theirs anyway.
The seagulls get into and flies, why are there no garbage collection on Saturday & Sunday at the beach fronts. Just one empty would make so much difference. Bigger bins more bins. They are simple solutions to keeping the place clean
Perhaps people could be persuaded to take their rubbish home.

One solution may be to take a plastic shopping bag with you and place all your garbage in it then find a garbage bin a distance away ot take it home and place in your own bin!

I agree with what you say. I also want to see more emphasis placed on recycling options wherever there are bins. We need to start thinking globally about what we use and what we throw away so that we can live in harmony with our environment. We need to put pressure on our councils to make them see these options as necessities: we have to look at our way of life as being over 7 days and not just fitting in with the garbage schedules that suit the pick-up from houses. I wonder how many people thought of this sort of thing when making decisions in the recent council elections.

frilly, whenever we as a family went camping in our holidays it was mostly in the bush without any mod cons. We had to seek permission from the property owners to camp there and the condition was that you leave the place as you found it. this meant that we took our rubbish home. Our motto was " if you've the room to take it there, you've got even more room to take it back with you". Just take a bit of pride in your country????
