Absolutely! I canot believe there is so much "given" overseas when our own hard working Australians are being neglected, Dentists, Hospitals, Disabled, Mentally Ill, it is an absolute disgrace that we have so many homeless also.

For goodness sake $10,000 given to Economic Refugees arriving by boat whilst OUR OWN people are under so much stress!

Unbelieveable!

How True. The same should apply to us here in New Zealand, as our government does not fully understand the importance of keeping our isolated hospitals in financial and medical condition through so they say is a "lack of money".

Mim says: Once upon a time, in NSW, there was a lottery from which the profit went to hospitals. If this was re-introduced, I'm sure it would be well supported by the public. We keep hearing that the government has allocated so many millions to hospitals but we don't hear how and where and on what these funds are applied. Why is there not enough equipment? Why aren't unemployed persons, pensioners, government benefit recipients and, YES, even boat people, given a chance to contribute by gaining employment in hospitals to clean, carry, assist hospital staff, so that patients don't have to wait so long for attention. Many persons on very low incomes, such as the abovementioned, would welcome the opportunity to earn a few dollars more per week so that they could afford to eat properly and pay their bills. Centrelink offices could be equipped to arrange this for those who wish to participate

if you want go health care the money has to come from someware
too many people expect and want everything for free without contributing
some aspects of our community know how to work the system and milk it for everything and eho do not contrixpect this as their right using resourse up that should be benifiting all
country people need need the resources but suffer at the hands of the greedy indiviuals who do not contibute but want it all for free
we might as well start supplying medicare cards in vending machines

I guess the only way we can change things is to take our greiviences to the Poll and vote for the party that will truly do the right thing by all Australians, particularly the needy, the homeless and the sick. This government is very good at talking, but we still have to see the results of their" promises" Ofcourse we have to ensure we are voting for the right party and not just the popular party Leader. Just because people "like" you or you have a "cool" slogan does not make for a good polictical choice. Kevin 007 brings shudders to me!

Hi Pam could not help but reply to your post from April 2011 regarding asylum seekers. Have you been counting how many more have arrived since then. The amount of money that they are costing us could pay for the disability insurance system and the dentalcare. WHY WHY does the government treat the people (taxpayers) so badly and continue to say there is no money for the things we want need, yet continue to give millions away.

Hope you look after yoiurself if your hospital is not able to care for everyone.

This is not the best Federal government we have ever had but minority governments are always difficult.

Sorry mate, forgot to wish you a very merry and relaxing Christmas and a prosperous 2012. Cheers

You have got to be joking mate, we give away money left right and centre. We give weapons and ships to that have bad human rights records. We basically fund Papua New Guinea and their "Democracy" . We aid every country that asks for help when disaster strikes. African countries in particular, even their dictator ships. And what for? to appease a minority of Australians that rather look after other countries misery than our own. Charity begins at home and it should be the right of every Australian to be looked after FIRST and not as another vote to keep a Government in power. As far as states funding Health, the sooner this passes over to the federal sphere the better. Just look at the mess in QLD and elsewhere. At least if Fed's look after health we will know who is to blame for the shortcomings. A 3 year wait to get a hip replacement or a spinal fusion done is just not good enough. Maybe we should outsource these things to some Asian country if we are unable to handle the workload. I would be happy to pay my own return airfare to be without pain.

Pam,

Too many of our politicians get away with shifting the blame to someone else and that seems to be what the whole federal, state, territory government structure is about - ensuring that it is unclear who is responsible for anything.
Your comment about hospitals is a great example. Until recently I think that the federal government ran one hospital in Australia and that was a result of Howard taking over a hospital in Tasmania in 2007.
Blaming Canberra for the lack of facilities in a hospital that the WA state government is responsible for will never get us anywhere. If we try and criticise the WA government of course they will say that they are not getting enough from the federal government.
In terms of aid money going overseas we are one of the lowest aid givers in the OECD and we are one of the higher users of overseas capital. Not sure what that says about us but the overseas capital flowing into Australia is much higher than the aid dollars flowing out.

full on correct

aspecially the people on aged pensions they sure live badly
and no one listens to them
the money we have in australia is hard to come by as we produce less than a lot of countries
wake up all politicians

LOL, WELL SAID STRETCH.
WE NEED TO KEEP OUR MONEY IN OZ, NOT SENDING IT ALL OVER THE PLACE TO HELP OTHERS IN NEED. WE ARE IN NEED, MOST PENSIONERS LIKE MYSELF ARE LIVING/SUSTAINING BELOW THE POVERTY LINE. I'D LIKE TO SEE MS GILLARD IN THE SHOPPING QUEUE @ WOOLLIES IN A RURAL TOWN IN WA, & TRY TO SURVIVE ON WHAT WE HAVE TO FOR SAY 6 MONTHS. I'M SURE SHE WOULDN'T SEE THE DISTANCE.
WE HAVE A HOSPITAL WHICH IS WAY OVERDUE FOR UPGRADES. IF A BABY IS UNEXPECTEDLY BORN PREMATURE, WE HAVE TO WAITH FOR A FLYING DOCTOR TO TAKE IT TO PERTH, DURING THAT WAIT HOWEVER, IT COULD DIE BECAUSE OF LACK OF NEO NATE FACILITIES! GET A GRIP CANBERRA, STOP GIVING AWAY OUR MONEY TO ALL AND SUNDRY & WHILE I'M AT IT, SEND THE ASSYLUM SEEKERS BACK HOME. THEY AREN'T HAPPY HERE, THEY ARE DESTROYING WHAT YOU HAVE GIVEN THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT HAPPY.

I agree that charity should begin at home and particularly when it comes to the health and welfare of our own people. There always seems to be a massive supply of money when it comes to the "welfare of other countries" but for some reason the budget doesn't cover the health and welfare here. After reading the story of the young woman who miscarried in a hospital and no one came to help just makes my blood boil. How can a woman be left to deal with a miscarriage in a hospital toilet? Will she ever get over that? The politicians just talk about improving health and making more beds, doctors and nurses available, but does it happen. Where doese the "buck stop" Kevin said with him, haven't heard whether Julia is the "buck stopper"! I over heard a conversation yesterday on a tram to Adelaide city. A woman was saying she would have to not fulfill her pesrciption this week because her daughter had run out of money to buy food for herself and her child because they had been sick and had needed the money for medicine, so she gave the money for her own medicine to her daughter. WHAT! Is that the way the needy are having to live in this wealthy country of ours? When are the people who brag and sprook about what they can do for foreign countries going to look to home first. There is so much that needs to be done here. We always seem to have housing for asylum seekers, but not for our homeless. There are many children in every city of this country who have no homes, but what is being done to house them and their families. When my mother died tragically, no one flew me across the country and back to bury her. This government's actions are going to build resentment and in the long term destroy this generous and caring country's people. I blame the 2 Independents who allowed this government to govern when in fact the people of Austrailia said we didn't want them!

It would seem to me that we in this country do little to make sure that the politicians we elect carry out the wishes of the majority. We tend to sit back and do nothing. What happened to...

Hi longey! Thanks for your reply. I reread what I wrote way back in 2011 and seriously things have gotten worse with this government. I have an elder sister and she told me that her water rates are about to go up another 14% here in Adelaide, and then of course we are all can't wait for the carbon tax to really wipe us out. Those who are on fixed incomes (pensioners) and have medical exspenses etc. are really going to find things tough. When my husband and I retired a few years ago we thought we were going to be comfortable in our dwylight years. We thought we had set things up so we would have no worries. Honsetly no amount of "pension" is enough with everything going up and up. People are worried and wonder what more this mob is going to do to us before they are chucked out.

I see Julia is over in the US doleing out more money to the Afgan President (he will do better than his own people from the $300,000,000 handout). This government is so generous with the taxpayers money for everyone but our own people.

I have returned to Adelaide after living away for many years and if anything the infrastructure in this city is worse than it ever was. Politicians state and federal are certainly in it for their own benefit and seem more interested in being popular with union based industries than the general work force. The money that has been wasted here in SA is almost criminal. We have patients being attended to in ambulances as there is no room in the emergency department. I thought the federal government said that all hospitals in Australia would be better off under their government and that if there was a problem the buck would stop with the PM.

I must admit I am bewilded why people vote Labor over and over when they do such a bad job here in SA. I am so happy that the other states have thrown them out. We need a Federal election now so that we can have a government that is ELECTED by the people and not in power because of "deals"made with the Greens and Independents. This is a gvernment that no one voted for and have done everything and anything to stay in power.

What happened to politicians of good moral worth? Most seem only to be there to get money with little interest in the well-being of the people of this great country. The present Government as usual will run us into a great deal of debt as they always do when in. Do the people of Australia really care? They just let it happen!

Cat, I miss the Democrats and am sorry that they lost their way in the manner they eventually did. I agree that we need to look after our own first and foremost. We are indeed a wealthy country...

Hey paradox! Honestly what are we as the averaged tax paying hard working Aussies going to do? We never voted that red head in and now she is there she is doing anything and everything to stay as PM. She really is enjoying the personal advantages of being PM and not doing much to actually govern this country. Her reforms so far have done nothing to improve our lives (at least not mine). As for her and the rest of them getting this massive payrise, well it is almost criminal. To say that an independent body sets the level of pay rises for pollies and senior public servants, is almost laughable. The chief guy is in fact a Minister in the government?? Can you believe some of them get paid more than the US President! And allowing them to hold onto their gold card and get this pay rise almost makes me cry. Politicians of both persuations have really milked this priviledge and it is wrong wrong wrong. Ofcourse they should be able to claim travel and away from home allowances, but to have the taxpayer pay for ever for them to travel the world is criminal. I think of all the urgent things that could be done ((at least a good part of them) if this money for travel (mostly unneccessary and only for their pleasure) was spent on things of urgency, like health, homelessness, mental health etc. what a wonderful place this could be. To say there won't be a gold card in future means that this lot benefit twofold. Ofcourse lets not forget the old hangerson who have had this gold card priviledge for years and years. And what makes me even madder/sadder is to think that these useless idiots are going to live high on the hog for rest of their days ***##**### is that how you swear in computer lingo? Oh I feel better now I got some of that off my chest!

Cat, I miss the Democrats and am sorry that they lost their way in the manner they eventually did. I agree that we need to look after our own first and foremost. We are indeed a wealthy country and should not have the many underprivileged, unemployed and homeless people we have. We should also not have a "government" that panics and closes trade with our nearest trading partner who now has retaliated by halving the amount of cattle being shipped there. It is just not good enough to dish out rhetoric and spin to us in the false believe that if they tell the story often enough we will eventually take it as gospel. We are not fools to be cast aside as irrelevant when we have an opinion and then beg us to re-elect the fools. Manufacturing industry is in decline and only the mining sector is keeping Australia from becoming a bankrupt third world country. It is not in the interest of Australia to ask us to tighten our communal belt and than take pay increase of 30%. I am sick to death of politicians and their spin doctors sprouting lie after lie and not be held to account. In the end it is us the poor mugs of Australia that have to pay for all the mistakes that our pollies are making on our behalf because we put them there. I have recently written a letter to editor of The Australian about how the illegal immigrants are receiving privileged treatment compared to people that have worked and paid taxes here all their lives and actually got it published. A lot of people that know me and my pen name have contacted me and have signalled their approval of my take on what is happening with the blessing of this inept "government". I want my tax money paid back to me with interest as I can squander it away faster then they can.

you are 100% right if we lower the amount we sent to other countries and reduce the migrants that are allowed to stay in australia or at least reduce the amount of time they are allowed in the country it would help to reduce the homeless
the story you relayed to over hearing is very commen many people in jousing commision wait to eat till the kids are fed as lower finances are availablle for the ones lucky enough to be housed
we need to drastically improve our standards of living before we can call this the rich land as most of the business folk have left and returned home
and all that was left were the black migrants that have little and when they leave we will have less
most politicians promise the workd and do little unless there is a profit in it for there own pockets not the country
