Housing Trust and the Government

What do you think of the fact that the increase the pensioners received last year, each state government said that they would not take it off the pensioners by incresing their housing trust rent.
Which is exactly what they are gding to do next year, works out to just over $30 a fortnight increase.
You can never seem to get that little bit on top of things with the extra money that was given, as it does make a massive difference.
So they give it in one hand and take it out the other.
It's just seems every bill you receive everything has gone up, your registration can go up $10 in 3 months.....

It's just never ending, would just be iinterested in what others thought.

Merry Christmas to my fellow Cafestudy members :)

I agree that the government does give with one hand and penalize housing trust tenants with the other. I live in South Australia, and I see the rents people who do not have Housing Trust accommodation are paying, and honestly I don't know how they cope. I for one am very grateful for reduced rent, but I am aware even in HT accommodation a lot of people and families are struggling, in South Australia and interstate also I would think. And owning a car for a pensioner is a joke, it is just so expensive it's unbelievable, I am seriously thinking I may have to sell mine, it just isn't affordable any-more. I don't think in the current economic climate that the government should take a percentage of every small increase pensioners get as it is tough, possibly better than in the private rental market, but still very difficult for many, myself included, especially when the bills come in for electriciity, gas etc! I think in the future actually having a HT home will be something that people will only be able to dream of as there is such a shortage of homes, and there are so many people who need subsidized housing, a serious problem indeed. I can relate to the way you feel, and understand your frustration!.

At least some of you have public housing. My friend lives in a falling apart house in the Gold Coast hinterland, which is only just affordable. She has had 2 strokes which meant she could not drive for a period of time and now cannot keep her 3 hours of work as she has a disability with her arm and leg. She has been on the housing list for 15 years and last time she went in to see if there was anything available she was told it will be 20 years before she gets anything. She is 69 so she said I'll be dead before then and they just said "That's Right"!

Well we just got a yearly rise of $10 and housing trust just took $6.00 of it off me a disabled pensioner who is unable to walk. So what is the use of getting a rise. They are and will constantly put up the cost of living, and give us $10 a year rise for that purpose. However, the cost of living goes up a lot more than that. The price of Electricity, gas, food, petrol, fees, medical etc. goes up a lot more than that each year.
I have to live with candle light at night, and only put the heater on when necessary, and I might tell you it gets minus 2 hear in Tasmania.
So anyway no vegetables and fruit again, which is not helping my health condition. I will just grin and bear it, may be God will help the pensioners to be treated fairly.
We did not ask to be in this position, it was in the course of our life, and our right to have what we have.
Better hope you don't end up in our position.

I have just joined cafestudy,in QLD we got the $19 increase for married pensioners our public housing rent went up $22.But thats not unusual for QLD gov it loves pensioner bashing the once minister for health Mr Lucas said that the reason the public hospitals are having problems is because of the aged I think they would like us all to drop dead as soon as we retired that would save this gov money

Hmm...I'm also living in State Government housing, my rent automatically rises each year, as it does in private renals as well. Despite our governemnt allowance going up last year by the $30pw, to date, we have not had a huge increase in our rent...I think mine rose by about $3pw.....doesn't sound a lot I know, but our power bill has risen by about $8pw, food cost, well wont go there, car rego, wont go there either, water ...sigh another rise. I'm told by the department that they will be transfering me to another unit soon, and my rent will remain the same (of course) - rent btw, is a percentage of your total gross annual income, not sure how it is worked out, and it varies from state to state.
One thing that peeves me though, in the unit I'm in now, I've had to repair the airconditioning, as it is not "part of the building" and when I'm moved, apparently there is no aircon, or heating, this is the tenants responsibilyt. Oh well, looks like my meagre income is going straightback to the government yet again.

Hey Proteus,

We Meet Again :)

Pitty in better circumstances woul be better, as I was reading you comments, well it was like same here! I'm in SA so they take 25% of your GROSS...

Hello again Lise..,
You know we really have to stop meeting like this - people wil start to suspect a few things I fear :( chuckles.
Re aircon not being part of the beuilding, well apparently since I[ve spent so much money on it to get it working again, I' m (according to other people and NOT the housing dept) entitled to have it removed and take it with me?? Don't think I'll bother to be hones,t but will be making sure it does NOT work for the next tenant.
Regarding you and your water account, in this state it is illegal to have a property with only one water meter, if there are other units etc., as in housing, using the same water line. I personally would be taking it up with you accomodation manager, AND the water authority there so that it is rectified. Nope it isn't fair that there are 6 units, and only one meter for all, so the bill is divided by the 6, not fair at all. Get on the departtment's back about it, and if you need maintenance done, do the same thing, and don't let them bill you for repairs either !!
As to my move to a new place, and the no heating or aircon ( our govt minister here says it is not needed in our climate, ) I have been advised that I can put aircon and heating in the new place at my cost (of course) and either remove it when and if I leave, or sell it on to the next tenant. Yeh right doubt that any new tenant will be paying for someting I've already for - oh well, will have to wait and see for now, but yep, you're right, sometimes Governemnt departments such as housing are "noit run", but they also seem to make up rules as they go along, and more often it depends on the tenants and how they are perceived by the department itself ?? Well that's my opinion ;)
NIce to chat again Lise...take care ...

We have to also now pay for our water, as there is only one metre between 6 of us (der only trust would build them like that) so now what ever the water bill, well we will just divi it 6 ways! Yeah sure why not, never mind how many people live in each unit, I tell ya Proteus, the more ya flaming hear and read from state to state how it's "not run" it's a joke.

Oh am confused, commision house, yet what, not part of the building,
can't work that out, it's their flaming building.........SIGH!

Hang in there :)
Sending best wishes :) :)

every time the government gives out a pay increase to those on pensions the rent does go up as the rent is a percentage of the rate of pay
and so does the cost of living
ie food water electricity
it is wrong these people have very little to live on know and i have personalyy witnessed how some of them live toast and weet bix for a large amount of meals and forget meat and fresh vegetables as they can not afford it and as they are very proud elders they will not except a meal from certain humans as it costs them with there pride latter on
imagine trying to live on $50.00 per two weeks after paying rent and a few of the bills
what really gets up my nose is the politicians are getting around in $30,000.00 cars and living like kings and giving money to other countries and forget about the people that voted them in

I contacted my Federal Member about this matter and he stated that it was nothing to do with the Federal government but the individual State Governments so he could do nothing.

I was of the beleif that the Federal Government run the country not the state governments or at least that they could overrule them, obviously I was wrong they don't care

Hiya pauld,
Thanks for your reply, and could'nt have put it any better myself, that is exactly right.
I did wonder after posting my original comment, that I thought it was up to each state government, not to take it from the trust tenants. So of course there was obvisually a "hands off" period, so Mr Rann has jumped straight up to the plate with his hand out again!

I do know that not all of the states are gong to take it from their own state trust/housing commision tenants.

Hiya 19chris51,

Thanks for your reply, as I just sit in amazement how they can just take it from pensioners ect, that made a lot of difference to the quaulity of many people's way of living/life for many people, and now just rip if off them! Heartless!!!

That just plain sucks, I'm sorry, Your mum is so right and it's still happening to this day, and unfortunately it will always continue.
Again it's so true what you say, I'm in Adelaide, and my rent too went up last year, and like I said I have heard that this is what SA Governements plans!

I pray that you, your mum & dad are speared in NSW, and they don't take it from you.

Take care

I agree the pension should go up, even though $10 to $30 a fortnight will not cover everything, it should help a little.
