Ads on TV serve two purposes. To get a coffee break or facilitate an exercise programme for the index finger on the fast forward button.

Advertisements is being shown to an absurd amount but it is the backbone of our economy.

Yes we are, especially now with the new freeview channels. There is also way too much repetition of ads, particularly of the tv specials kind.

Having worked in the industry for many years, I can tell you that television and magazines are NOT there for the viewer/reader - they are there for the advertiser.
You may think that logically, we need to like the programme and advert before we can be persuaded to buy but it doesn't work like that. In fact, the less gullible you *think* you are, the more likely you are to be a buyer.
People will watch anything. How often have you say through a programme and wondered why on earth you bothered? The ads are meant for people like you :)
If you don't switch off and do something else - ads are meant for people like you too ;)
Believe me, you don't know how you are being manipulated because the trick is to make sure you never guess. But if adverts didn't work, they wouldn't spend billions a year on making them.

Look in your cupboards - how much is in there that wasn't advertised?

It's like the traffic reports on the radio and the TV, the advert they throw in at the end takes more time than the actual report!

I think that the TV ads are better fiction than most of the movies that they run on TV.

I agree, so many faked photoshopped pictures of fat 50 y/o losing weigh and no way could they loose that much without multiple skin flap surgery.
Blurred video of models so skin looks smooth when advertising skin creams that do not work.
18 y/o models showing how good their skin is, my gawd they are babies.
Why are they allowed to lie?

ON top of adverts during programmes we are also have to put up with as on tv advertorials which last around half an hour per product. Yes there is too much on television.

Yes Pedro and I am also amazed that the TV Channels have all these extra channels now playing a lot of older shows which might appeal to lots of people and they seem to be showing more advertisements than the regular channels. It's one of the best things about the ABC but not all their programs appeal to the multitudes. SBS used to be good and they have some terrific programs but unfortunately SBS is using more advertising too now. I realise they sponser the shows but what good does it do when most people either mute them or record and then fast forward to delete ads

Addition...Yes they are killing their advertisers sponsoring dollars, as I watch like many others on my PVR and I can pause viewing and fast forward the adverts. Also there are a maximum time allowed per hour for advertising but these rules are broken every day by more than 100%. Chanel 10 tried to tell me 13 minutes per hour, I don't think so.

Hi, I totally agree with you, the ads make viewing almost unbearable in some shows I watch, and I do exactly the same as you and record the show to be able to FF. Even an old repeated show on...

June I couldn't agree with you more about everything.
I find myself looking at TV less and less, and you are right about the ads being louder than the program, I have to turn the volume down or push thee mute button
when the ads are on

Even an old repeated show on seven2 like Heartbeat which I like, is just completely spoiled by too many ads. To make matters worse, ads are not even good any more, most of them are groanworthy, too loud, although the TV channels say they are no louder than the actual program....I'm afraid I don't believe that either.

I think so. However, what bothers me more are two things:
1. The banality of some advertising campaigns - pretty insulting to the intelligence and wit of most people (although I must admit that some people are very gullible).
2. The deregulation of TV ads. Once ads had to be made in Australia - or at least the voiceover here - providing employment and some local cultural context. There were also broadcasting regulations which limited the number of ads shown per hour... now we're deluged with ads, and often repetitive ones at that.
These things make me and many other people I know turn off... sometimes working to the detriment of the advertised product.

It is not the quantity that is a problem.
Advertising is blatently out of control, and is now deliberately using illegal mind control methods.........and well known faces, to control the weak minded amongst us.
