Julia Gillard has announced the other day that the Government will give Indonesia $500million for building and upgrading Indonesian schools. What are your thoughts on this subject?

If your own country is in debt and the budget is in nega
tive, can you afford to give money away? How about the politicians agreeing to a pay cut, instead of a pay rise. I am sure we could save a few million there. They should spend money to educate people, who then can work out how to actually keep the budget a float! Every financial adviser always seems to say to get rid of debt. What is the treasurer doing? And what does Julia listen to?

Foreign aid has been happening for decades, possiably more. I think there are 2 reasons for foreign aid, first politicians tell us that it's about helping developing nations catch up to us. Secondly, and proberly more important, it's usually a bribe in order to get something they want.

In this case the problem is that on world standards, Australia's education is arguably falling behind. Make matters worse Gillard currently has an unfunded schools program sitting on the table.

I think Julia Gillard should help the Australian people and pensioners before she helps Indonesia out.Julia Gillard has Tim to draw a bath for her, blow dry her hair and collect the paper for her and then his day is done and he watches her in parliament laying on the lounge

All well and good. I am assume this is part of Australia's aid programme to developing countries. The only concern I have is that the monies are accounted for and auditable as corruption is rife in Indonesia.

I cannot understand why our so called Gov't has to always send money overseas,it is either in the millions or billions and it always seems to be Asian countries. We in this country are in dire straits for extra funding in all facets in health, roads ,public transport rail and the list goes on.Now if they would just invest this money could you just imagine how much better off we would be as a nation. We as a nation have some 21,000,000 people and Indonesia some 200,000,000,let them look after themselfs. They must be thinking that everything will be alright,we will get the money from the suckers(Aust),well i say let them stand on thier own two feet,as a nation the Asians have been around a lot longer than the people of Australia have
.

Its about time that this Government started to think about Australia. We have had floods, cyclones and they decide to tax ordinary Australians to pay for the repairs but at the same time give away OUR hard earned money to a Government who you can't trust

Any money spent to educate young Indonesians will leave them less vulnerable to brainwashing from al-Qaeda, or its Indonesian branch, Jemaah Islamiyah (look them up on Wikipedia). A bloody good investment for us.

I think Julia Gillard should hand over her pay instead of giving us another tax for her to donate over seas, also all these taxes to help out every state ,what state helps nsw .every state should be able to help there own state when things go wrong as we pay for it for ever

Why is this taxpayers money being spent to üpgrade ISLAMIC schools? why not put it to better use for OUR OWN schools? and education of our own children- why should we in Australia donate to foreign education when our children have to pay so much for "Free"sducation.

i really have no response,if i did do you think the australian government would listen, obviously NOT.a lot of australian ,s are suffering.but get little compensation.i think worst of all.australia's returned soldiers who have been injured in war and cannot work because of this receive a pension which just puts them above the poverty line.the government has been approached many times.both liberal and labor.both have promised this would be fixed if elected.both have broken these promises.instead sending money to indonesia.pathetic.we need help from the community to get these things done

Outrageous giving $500M to Indonesia to build Islamic schools.

This money could have been put to better use in Australia where health, education and affordable housing are in desperate need of funding.

The money would be better spent in upgrading our deteriorating health system. I belikeve this will now be happening but not before a lot of opposition to it. Namely the West Australian Premier Colin Barnett was totally opposed to this and was not prepared to come on board. At least something might be happening!!!

Karen
  • 15th Feb 2011 11:18pm

Not sure. While the cause might be worthwhile I'm not sure that $500 million should be going overseas. I think it would be better spent in our own country upgrading our schools before we consider giving money away overseas.

Firstly let me say I am so pleased to be interacting with people with like mind to me. I sometimes think I am very critcal and cynical when it comes to this Gillard government, but I can see there are many people who agree that this government only seem to be interested in what Australia should be doing for foreign countires. The need is so great here in Australai for schooling, hospitals help for the homeless and the mentally disabled. How can a government justify handing out money, houses etc. when there a people sleeping in our city streets through no fault of their own. Why can't the government take care of our needy, particularly when so many are finding life hard. The fact that so much effort is put into minority groups and yet nothing into areas where there is crisis. What happened to compassion and justice for ALL Australians. How can the government ignore our own who need a house, schooling and medical treatment and yet go out of their way to house, school and in fact even pay people who should not be here in the first place. As for $500 m to Indonesia is almost criminal, that is far from a poor country, why can't they build their own school? The only way to change things is to vote this govenment OUT>

I also think she should look at the Australian schools before giving to Indonesia. Who are we giving this money to? People who will be educated to hate all who aren't Muslims and bomb them when they come to their country?

i live in perth and there are people living in cars with their children and cannot get any emergency housing ,
i think it is a disgrace.

I think indonessia is using australias liberty they should learn to stand on their own two feet and not expect us to get them out of trouble what do they do for us nothing not even exchange prisoners but are very harsh on them but indonesians imprisoned here live basically in luxury by their standards so live in the real world australia we need that money as much as we do

I have lived in Indonesia and knew people who dealt with the Aid money. Yes there is money wasted as corruption and incompetence is rife. However these people have nothing. I know of schools where the ceilings are propped up as the keep falling in or ones the get flooded every time there is a king tide. Even a very poor rundown school in NZ or Australia has 100 times the resources. The reason for Aid money is often political as in Indonesia's case there are Australia companies wanting to mine Indonesia's rich ore deposits. So often it is a trade off of Aid to smooth the wheels of business.

I am sick of us helping them when they are so unrelenting towards us. They allow boat people to leave their shores, they will not allow any Australians to finish their jail terms here, they insult us at every chance they get. I believe that they treat us like shit, stop all help untill they realise that help etc is a Two way street.

I couldn't agree more butterfly! Besides, the only thing stopping them from 'trying' to invade our country is lack of finances and education! Lucky for us, we'd be severly out-numbered and in deep sh!# if they did.

yes and if MISSGILLARD stayed home instead of flying of to suck up to every one else and put that money into the country that voted her in education and health care, to me we seem to be going back ward in stead of forward

We need to think of Australians first, if all is well in our own country (backyard) fine, but consider this Ms Gillard, our education could and should be considered in need , our health system is faultering, and in desperate need of proper funding, the list goes on and on, tidy our own systems up first.

Indonesian people will be receiving $500 million dollars for education, but in South Australia adult education is to be slashed. Where does Ms Gillard's loyalty lay, not hard to guess! Ridding South Australia of adult education will save $20 million dollars, and don't tell me this is state don't wnat to hear it, Ms Gillard is Prime Minister, this is a social inclusions issue, it is her business to keep an eye on what is happening at state level, as well as federal level. Adult Education provides a safe environment for socially disadvantaged people to learn, and in many cases gives people a reason to get out of bed in the morning. I don't begrudge Indonesian people the right to an education, but I think Australians should have the same privilege.

im from the uk and believe me, this isnt the only country that does that. we did it for years and we are now suffering the consequences.
that said, you also have to realise that the worlds wealth is tied up in nations like australia, the uk and mainland europe, and until recently the us, and a lot of that wealth is made off the backs of the developing world, so theres a moral obligation there to be not too tight-fisted with the proceeds.
my issue with both the uk and here is that money that should be channelled into the public services is squandered on utter crap, monitoring and administering unwieldy processes that are enforced on the population, in the way of many governments.
