They should play an extra ten minutes and the first to score a goal wins. This would put make accuracy much more important when kicking for goal, although umpiring in the extra ten minutes would have to allow the game to move on and not give easy ridiculous free kicks.

From a cost to the AFL and to the supporters It should be extended that day not played a week later. Also as supporters may not be able to attend due to family and work commitments.

  • 3rd Jul 2013 08:20pm

Most of the time the team you support is why you attend. The AFL would at the present call another match 7 days later. Although the AFL commission seem to get all the profit of it is also the clubs who also get credit of he attendance and media. So as that you would be more than happy to have another game for your team so they could receive more profits to put into their bank. As a result more merchandise would be made and better upgrades for your club.

definitely extra time, then its the best team on the day, not the best team who can come back the next week, and its the fairest way for the real fans that have paid a lot of money to be there.

if the grand final is a draw i believe the afl should play an extra 10 minutes and who ever has the highest scored team after the ten minutes wins. If a draw after the ten minutes then go golden goal!

I think the grand final should be settled on grand final day. we have the week processions leading up to it, the brownlow, the parade, then the pre match entertainment.......all to come back next week ????? it just seems such an anti climax to the whole season that has led to GF day. 5-10 min each way is my best bet. at the end, if still a draw, another 5-10 min period untill we have a winner. I believe the fans deserve a result. or if not, at least let them have the same tickets for the following week. afl should not make money out of it

Tricia
  • 14th Feb 2012 11:59pm

Defiately no replay it should be decided on the day. Do it a weeks time you can select fresh players. It also interfers with the start of the cricket season the only winner is AFL who pocketed over$20 + million!!

Tricia

Tricia
  • 14th Feb 2012 11:52pm

Definately an extra 5 min each end, a result should be had on the dsy no replays. A replay is only advantagous to the AFL they pocketed $20million+ by having the extrs GF it also mucks up a lot of other events. The cricket season has to.be put back a week . The spring tacing carnavel cannot start on the sat. Sside from all this they aten't entitle to the use of the MCG as the agreement that has been in existance for as long as football, which for those who aren't aware of it was cteated to keep the cricketers fit, ststes from April 1 till 30 of Sept football from 1sr Oct. till 31stMarch it is the cricket ground.Just as an aside for those who think MCC members get it easy they don't 23,000 seats 100,000 membets so work it out! Also the MCC has to.pay ever time a member attends the football and in the case of the finals it is st the premium price.

I like the replay the week after. It pits the teams supports staff against each other as well as the twenty two on the field. True the richer clubs have the better support staff/ facilities and the replay definitely favors them, but if a team gets into the finals its not just because of the players but because of the the support around them as well.

Of course they should play an extra 30mins last years grand final was a joke being a saints supporter i have no doubt in my mind the saints would have won if it was played longer. having to pay for 2 grand final tickets was a joke too,

Replayed in full...if you are unlucky to have injuries then playing extra time makes it a unfair playing field.

Anonymous
  • 1st Apr 2011 02:23pm

Play an extra 30 minutes. the game essentially is about the fans and the market they bring in. Sure if u play another game in a week you're always going to bring in more money but the fans pay to see the full action. A grand final is a spectacular event to attend to. id feel ripped off if i went then had to wait a week to see it played out again. its absolute BS. it deffinately needs to be fixed up. judging by the reactions of the players after the st kilda collingwood grandfinal they wouldnt mind seeing a rule change either.

  • 17th Mar 2011 10:19am

An extra 30 minutes to decide the outcome. It is not right to expect the fans to return a week later and have to pay again .

Personally I think that the team who is at the top of the table at the end of the season should be the ultimate winner overall. Then there would be no need for a Grand Final

  • 20th Nov 2010 12:45am

I believe the 30 minute rule should apply. They are fit and should play on with their substitution rules. The people their played a lot of money to be at a Grand Final. The children that are allowed on the field will probably never experience again as they might not be able to get there again or there parents not afford the experience twice.

Nefertari
  • 19th Nov 2010 02:52pm

Interesting points you make but I have a totally different opinion as to how the Grand Final should be decided....I don't believe there is a need for a GF at all. What I think is that the team that has been the most successful all year and has the most points should be declared the overall winner! But then I guess that view would not benefit anybody moneywise....what do others think though?

timmo64
  • 18th Nov 2010 03:35pm

players are very tired after 4 quarters and another 30 mins wouldnt get the best out of the players, another game the following week is much better

sabusforms
  • 18th Nov 2010 12:47pm

Extra time should be played , say 15 minutes each side. It too costly for interstate fans to pay again for entry, flights ,accommodation etc.,etc. & then there is no guarantee to obtain tickets for the relay. Also the build up to the 1st Grand final is diminished for the replay as happened this year.

  • 17th Nov 2010 09:13pm

In most, if not all, other contact sports, when a result is required on the day ( for example, a Grand-Final ) there is usually extra time of 15 to 20minutes each way, if still no result, extra-extra time of 5 or 10 minutes each way with a golden goal ( or similar scoring means ), then if still no result, some type of penalty shoot-out to obtain a result on the day. This stops the farce of other sports having to re-arrange their match schedule because some fool is not willing to go with the modern desire for a result on the day !

They should not play another game, both of them are premiers.

ahbdesign
  • 17th Nov 2010 07:18pm

Of course they should! Or even 10 - 15 minutes would be sufficient! playing an extra 80 mins of football inconveniences everyone including the teams! As for the commission of the AFL, well that would be a whole different topic!

anne
  • 17th Nov 2010 07:13pm

THEY SHOULD HAVE A 15MIN BREAK THEN PLAY ON

dolores
  • 17th Nov 2010 05:01pm

No, as this is a unique game and it is very rarely we have draws, during the year if a team has a draw they both get 2 points each, maybe they should look at rewarding both team and they both get a trophy to say it was a draw, they can play another 10 min each and if no result call it a draw....

Loopie
  • 17th Nov 2010 01:30pm

Yes they should, it takes too much money and changing of plans if there is a draw for the loyal fans, to witness the Grand Final. You'd think being called Grand Final means that it is the Final game for the season.

Kayatch
  • 17th Nov 2010 11:39am

It is bad for the players and the spectators to not decide the match on the day. No other significant sport asks for rematch. The game should be extended by another 30 minutes. If no result is then reached the championship shpould be shared- but htis is an unlikely event. Main reason for the current situation is the AFL is greedy and has no real consideration for the players or spectators, only for their cash box.

I used to be in favour or the grand final replay but not that I've lived through one, the replay actually seemed like a bit of anti-climax. The build up was not the same and neither was the atmosphere or feeling on the day. Extra time for me now.

Tez
  • 17th Nov 2010 07:36am

If scores are equal and the end of the final quarter teams should have a 10 minute break then play two 15min halves. This would reduce fatigue and cramp for the player plus give all fans what they want...a decision on that day!.

Margg1111
  • 16th Nov 2010 11:15pm

The grand final should be decided on the "day"..... If the "time" has ended - then the next "goal or point" should define the outcome and the "GRAND FINAL WINNER"

maccus
  • 16th Nov 2010 10:17pm

Extra time seems reasonable until one considers the prospect of neither side scoring anything in that time.

I believe the return to play again is perfectly appropriate when both teams have a set time in which to win the match. If neither can win, it's a draw; when a draw is inappropriate - an elimination game or the grand final - the two sides should return to play again as occurs. I support the status quo.

Benny
  • 16th Nov 2010 10:07pm

No way should we change the game. Not enough draws to have the whole season put on the line for a few extra minutes. Play again the following week like we always have. Or should we think of having the players shoot for goal until one misses?

Wen

Most definetely. Why give the AFL coffers any more than necessary.

outsider
  • 16th Nov 2010 10:04pm

I'd rather they go an extra week. However, I'd like to see the AFL offer those that bought tickets and attended the draw half price tickets for the next match! After that, members that didn't get tickets for the drawn match should get first preference for any left over tickets.

As replaying the AFL Grand Final a week later is a big money earner for the AFL l don'tthink they will change it but really they should play extra time to get a result one the day as people play alot to go to watch a grand final and expect a result on the day

The replay was the right decision after the draw but I am convinced that the result could be left AS IS in the future! In other words, the two teams, who could not be separated, could be declared 'Joint Premiers'!
I happens in the Brownlow and other sporting medals, there is no reason it should not be the natural result in AFL.
They don't rerun any horse-race or an athletics race after a dead-heat do they. Why, for the sake of greed or a a specious need for a 'result' do they do it again in AFL?
The draw IS the result and can easily stand for that year as natural and fair.

What do you think?

I totally agree Vernodey !
There should be no extra play whatsoever. What is wrong with both teams honoring their skill and prowess as equally the best, for the season, and in particular, the Grand Final game.
All games are a certain time... adding on time, or a replay is a catch 22, as the winning team could only achieve their status by the advantage of 'extra time'.

No wonder people are so much more selfish and greedy these days, when the results of a sports game, 'Joint Premiers', is so abhorrent to some, that the game rules are manipulated, so that "ONE HAS IT ALL.'" Typical of the greed that is growing in our current society.

A long hard earnt battle like a grand final should be replayed in full. Because it is the rule of history. It would be a tragedy if a team won or lost due to 1 bad or unlucky umpire call or an unlucky play. A full replay is a more fair and true testimont to the season winner and well deserved at end of a full replay.

As a outsider NRL watcher I find that any sport can have bad decisions and with the AFL not only the grand final but the all games played can have a bad umpiring call. So why not a extra 30 minutes and yes I have been to a Grand Final and the atmosphere is tremendous and exillerating, so, I myself would prefer a extra time period on the day. Also I would not like to see a golden point as that would detract the object of the game. Rules are always changing so why not this one..

absolutely as then supporters do not have to miss out a second time if they don't get tickets. It also means that everyone gets real value for money and not have a one sided match as the replay was this year even though Collingwood won
