Only thing I can think of is less sugar and fat. Eating more nuts helped me. Makes you feel full and no nasties

I recently lost 20 kilos over 18 months. How I did that was to be motivated every day. I gave up things like soft drinks, drank more water, included things like tuna into my diet. I walked at a reasonable pace and walked for 2 hours a day. I was drinking at least 4 litres of water almost every day. I also had one day a fortnight, my high day where i could eat whatever I wanted. That increases your metabolism, gives it a kickstart and then you go back to your regular diet. I know its not easy, but pills are not the answer. I was 140Kgs, im now 118.5Kg with plans to lose another 20 kg in the next 12 months. so just keep trying and dont give up

do interval training - high intensity like sprint for 2 mins - then low intensity recovery, walking for 3 mins

Try weight training, you can lose weight by lifting weights

You should first know your daily metabolism level. Find out what your body burns daily without exercise and how much you consume. When you know this figure, you can set a plan to always be burning more than you consume. Check out "calorie counter" in search engines. Other than that a good morning exercise is the best to burn as much calories. If you dont like spending time on a treadmill for long periods of time, try "high intensity training" which burns more for less time. Weight lifting is also known to be the best for burning calories the most.

Most importantly, it is your diet that will make or break your weightloss plan. Reduce carbs, especially fast acting carbs like rice, white bread, sugar and switch to complex carbs. Take more proteins in your diet like fish, meat. They are good for you.

Be consistent and make it a lifestyle. No drugs will make you skinny, its all a marketing scheme. Its diet and food!

Goodluck!

hi there, i undersand your problem sometimes its hard to put down the weight that you have gained, but that ok try not to increase and to reduce the current weight you said that u r trying exercising that's fine normally if u do wat u do should reduce ur weight. But in ur case it is not so, so i sujest u to change on a vegetarian diet for atleast 3 to 4 day a week that should show the difference in you. If not u have to consult ur doctor for further advice.

make shore you are eating the freshest you can this means non processed foods this even means trying to start up a veg garden out the back and weight doesn't matter most of the time if you are looking and feeling better that all that counts, try losing weight with a friend or a close relative as they will notice a difference in you more than you can and it will help build up your self esteem it will also help out the friend or family member and make them more happy as well

I admire your dedication and discipline in your exercise regime and keeping an eye on what you eat. Having done all these and not losing weight, I wonder whether it is your thyroid glands or hormones. I would suggest consulting your GP to rule these out. What is your target weight?

I am morbidly obese and have just started eating healthier. I cannot walk so aqua aerobics is my exercise. I love it. I eat a lot more vegetables now and not just potato, pumpkin and corn like I used to. I include a lot of green vegies.
I have halved my portion sizes. I would eat a whole chicken breast but now only eat half a one. Nothing bigger than my iphone. My doctor always said my plate should be half salad/vegies. 1/4 pasta/rice/ potato and 1/4 meat/fish etc. I liked my meat to take up half the plate. I am slowly learning,. Same as with low fat etc. I now have full fat yoghurt as the carbs in low fat were too high. But not much of it instead of half the kilo container. 1 or 2 bikkies when really needed instead of half a pack of timtams. I have my 2 fruit serves in the morning so I can burn the carbs from them during the day. I don't snack after dinner anymore. I have only lost 5 kilos in the last 6 weeks but I don't want to lose weight too quick as it just goes back on as experienced before. This time I am doing it slowly and hopefully changing my lifestyle so it's forever and not just a diet. Good luck on your endeavour. I am pleased to hear you are already losing the weight.

Hi. As others have said u may b eating healthy u just may b eating to much. What works 4 me is shrinking my stomach pre eating. Our natural stomach size is about the size of our fist, b4 we have overstretched it with 2 much food. 1/2 hr pre eating drink glass very cold water, this will shrink ur stomach. Start all meals with protein first, this takes the pancreas out of digestion u will eat less. If no protein in meal u r eating have small spoon yoghurt, piece cheese, 2 nuts first, then eat ur meal. Dont drink with meals, this waters down digestive juices, drink 1hr after. Drink more water, often we arn't wanting food, we r thirsty. All the best good luck, congrats on ur efforts. bye. ....Tojo

cut down on breads and pasta, stop all sugar, coffee will taste terrible at first but stick with it after a week you shouldnt miss the sugar, dont walk down the junk food isle when shopping. dont keep any junk food at home, if you have a smart phone try the noom weight loss coach app, its free and it tracks your exercise and your food intake.it is simple to use and it works great for me.

try switching high GI food for lower GI food ie use sweet potatoe instead of potatoes.

As others have said watch portion size but also dont skip meals especially breakfast.

Also try measuring your self rather than weighing yorself, this is a truer test of fat loss.

i hav got a friend of mine and you wont beleive he lost 18 kg in one month. he is young may be thats why but the thing i noticed is determination.
you want to lose weight, first thing u need to do is believe that u will lose weight, it should be in your subconcious mind and no matter what happens u will do it and then set a time period in which u think u can lose that much weight. lets say u have set a goal to lose 3 kg in two weeks. dont rest until u achieve your goal and i can bet u will see great results. sub concious mind plays a vital role when its about our body.

I've been on Duramine and they are very expensive and i dont think they worked except they kept me awake I was like a zombie on them. I have an auto immune disease and with all the tablets I've been on the weight has been a big issue for years now but since the 1st Jan I have been on the Joe Cross diet of juicing and it has given me back my life in a month it really is wonderful. I drink my own juice every day and have veges or salad at night and have lost 7 kg's and not felt hungry once. Day 3 - 5 was rough detoxing but after that it's great. I go back to my specialist on Monday and I can't wait to see what this lot of blood tests say. I'm guessing they will be as good as I feel. Try it I will never go back to eating highly processed foods again my health and life are far too important.

I too walk 35-40 mins per day and workout at gym 5 x a week. I have only just began losing weight since i started the healthy eating plan from curves. If you don't eat enough food you slow your metabolism, which then can take weeks to get right. My best discovery was that I could eat as many alphalpha sprouts as I wanted and they are not only healthy, but also a colesterol scrubber ( removes colesterol from the blood and arteries). You can eat as many healthy vegies as you want so long as you eat enough of the other foods you need. If you eat too little, your body goes into starvation mode and prevents burning of fat. There is loads of variety in the CWMP and even room for improvisation.

A healthy diet is the answer. Join the gym with one ogf their weight-loss programs. It worked well for me and was the easiest weight-loss I have ever done. The gym work is secondary to the eating program. I now continue to eat within the program guidlines and no weight gain.

Lately I have found it is all about portion size! I have always eaten the same size meals, and have found that I'll just eat whatever is put in front of me. A couple of weeks ago I started eating cereal from a mug rather than a bowl and found that it filled me up just fine! So I went out and bought some smaller bowls and now always have any lunch or dinners in smaller portions and don't find myself hungry. I am not overweight at all, I just like to stay healthy, and even just by doing this I have lost a couple of kilos. Hope this helps, and GOOD LUCK!

Anyone trying to lose weight needs to avoid the so called "diet" foods - they are all full of the artificial sweetener aspartame which can actually make you eat more and put weight on. Aspartame is a toxic food additive which causes hundreds of health problems including seizures, diabetes, eye problems. Check the ingredients of any product before you buy it - if it has 950, 951, 952, aspartame, aspartic acid, put it back on the shelf. Google aspartame and read the long list of side effects of aspartame toxicity / poisoning...it's scarry!

Hi there, I recently heard that skipping is one of the best exercises for losing weight and toning all at once, I'm going to try it myself. I also know someone who has tried Duramine and appearantly It did nothing for weight loss, and had nasty side effects for him like mood swings and feeling lethargic.

Yes hubbu i can understand how you feel about not losing weight, as i fight with the same problem myself. I ride to the gym, that takes 10 minutes, at the least 3 times a week and train hard with weights 1 hour a session.
My part time job is also physical, walking is a main part of it 4 hours a day, and i basically weigh the same. But i took time out to focus on where the problem was coming from and there it was my diet?
You have to find a diet that suits you, and one that can hopefully stop or help with the cravings.
Years ago my brother asked a Samoan guy, who used to weight train, how to lose weight and he answered in a simple manner (stop eat)

I am having some success loosing weight at the moment after many years of carting all that extra around. Good on you with all your walking...I have started going to 'Curves' it is a womans gym, and I have to say it is fantastic and after only two months I had lost an overall 17cms as well as weight. It is all about toning I think and then the weight just seems to drop off as well. It is a really fun program also and only 30 minutes each visit. Check it out, I really recommend it.

I agree with the others i dont believe that drugs are the way to go.

You are doing lots of cardio which is great, but there is no resistance training in your schedule.

Add 3 days of light weights to increase your lean muscle mass and therefore increase your metabolism. As we age our lean muscle mass naturally decreases slowing our metabolism and meaning we cannot eat as much as we used to. By adding resistance training exercises to your routine you can increase your portion of lean muscle. If you are not a gym bunny dont worry you dont need to join a gym you can do lots of exercises in the comfort of your own home with minimal equipment.

I suggest enlist a personal trainer to come to you and write you a resistance training program that you can do at home. If you find this is still not getting the results you want talk to a nutritionist. They maybe able to tweak your diet a little.

I would definately advice seeking professional help before turning to drugs, and in the long run a 1 hour personal training session and a 1 hour nutritionist consult is going to be much cheaper than your prescription.

Have a great day!

How much weight are you trying to lose? the last couple of kilos are always the hardest th shift. I would stay away from the drugs, without seeing you, or knowing you, I think that you are a very determine person just keep up the great work. The weight that you are now is most proberly the weight you should be!! Maybe you may have to shock your body eg lift heavy weights, sprit instead of jogging, run up stairs etc, just don't injury yourself

Do you know how much you need (not want) to lose?
Do you eat regularly e.g. breakfast, lunch, dinner?
Do you know what a healthy diet consists of?
Perhaps with all the exercise you are doing, you are not eating enough.

There may be sooooo many reasons you're not losing weight. First you need to answer the question Why is my body holding onto this extra weight if I'm getting plenty of exercise and eating healthy? I've just finished reading The Gabriel Method and have so far lost 10kg without trying too hard! The main message is STOP DIETING!!! I'm not sure what your nutrition is like, but your body may be in a constant state of starvation for the right nutrients so it may be storing the fat to help you "survive". It may be emotional, environmental toxins (including food intolerances or processed food). Visit www.gabrielmethod.com.au and have a look at Jon Gabriel's short videos to get an idea if this sounds like you. Rather than a quick fix diet, Jon's approach is more of a long term "reset" of the body and only involves purchasing his book (I bought it second hand on eBay) and maybe his relaxation CD. He also provides his personal phone number in case you have any questions or issues, which is very unusual.
Personally I've also always had digestive problems which has improved since eating healthy and eliminating certain foods. That's why I'm about to have Imupro food intolerance testing carried out. I feel it's the last step in my weight loss journey.
Sorry if I sound like an infomercial, but I feel that I've had that eureka moment after years of hopeless yoyo dieting! Hope this helps as I really know how you feel :)

From someone who has lost 20kg in the past, I suggest increasing the speed (running is better), or doing interval training (run 5 mins, walk 5 mins run 5 mins etc etc).
Also, eating healthy is good, but you must also eat less, smaller portions too.
Good luck!
Losing weight isn't easy but its achievable and well worth the effort.

I'm no expert, but my research has taught me that unprocessed foods are best. Try to include protein in every meal, reduce intake of breads and pasta, and give the leg and arm muscles a good work out for burning the calories.

I really feel for you.I'm just the same and I think a lot of it is genetics.I have friends who eat whatever and still stay thin.
I've got BP and cholesterol now so am eating mainly salads with chicken or fish,it's coming off but very, very slowly.Apart from that, there is always Jenny Craig,if you can afford it that is.

Losing weight is such a hard thing. Diets always seem to just last for as long as you are on them. I have found that you need to change your lifestyle to make a change. You need to cut out cakes, biscuits, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice etc. Of course you are able to have them from time to time - like when you are out to dinner at a friends etc, but generally take them from your diet. Nice salads, and always have a protien serve with each meal - ie eggs, fish, lean meat, chicken, tofu etc. We have followed the regime of Body Trim and it really works. Eat every 3 hours, plenty of water, 10,000 steps a day. It really works. Just buy the book you don't need to join up. It is important that you do eat every 3 hours - if you try to starve yourself your body doesn't always let you loose weight. But most importantly change your lifestyle and eating habits to something you can maintain for your life - if you only loose 1 kg a month even, in a year that will bg 12 kgs etc, 2 years 24 kgs, and if that stays off - fantastic. Please don't take drugs - they can't be good for you. Good luck

The best way to loose weight is to lower your carb intake and to raise your protein . If your body isn't getting enough protein you star to burn muscle and not fat . Carbs store fat which you need to burn off . I have lost over 15 Kgs by doing this . I also have 1 junk day a week . you should also have 1-2 days of light exercise as recovery to allow the body to do its thing , if you do the same thing every day the body will get use to it and you just waste your time . For example try power walking one day and then running the next , then maybe next week do 2 days in a row and the week after go back to one day . Also try and extend your exercising times as this will burn more fat and you must drink atleast 2L of water per day . Matt

  • 28th Sep 2010 04:24pm

you could be eating the wrong type of food, you don't have to starve yourself to lose weight in fact if you do the body goes into starvation mode and slows down your metabolism and therefore you don't lose weight. I suggest you try a registered dietician to help put you on the right track. But don't give up

Hiya hubbu,

I lost 30kg with weight watchers and have kept it off now for over 14 years.
On my 30th birthday I decided enough was enough, I'm 5'6 and was 89kg.
So I know exactly how you feel, the frustration...the key is not to give up, easier said than done, I had tried all other diets, never drugs though.

Now to maintain my weight I do ZUMBA classes twice a week! now thats one was to get your heart rate up, and fun at the same time.
Maybe try something where others are on the same page as your are.
Good luck, I wish you all the best, please keep us posted on how your going

have a nice day :)

Hello to all people that have replied to my topic weight loss. There are some items that i have been buying and i was just wondering if they are safe to eat.
1. Sakata eg: sour cream and chives and they have less than 8% of fat.

2. water crackers with no topping

3. rice crakers any type but say 97% fat free

Do you think those foods that all read from 90 to 99% fat free are safe to eat.

Don't touch 'fat free' foods - they're just full of sugar. Look at the calorie content instead. Eat full fat, it's got more nutrients in and will do wonders for your skin. Just don't eat too much! P.S Try whole wheat cracker bread instead of water biscuits, with full fat or half fat Philadelphia cheese and cucumber...yummy!

My dilemma is losing weight namely my stomach. im paralized from the belly button down and have had a small pot belly since the accident prior to that never. Over the yrs i have kept active and tried to eat healthy how ever lately my weight has increased and although i was going to the local Gym most of the facilities were not made for people in wheelchairs so we 'made do' with what could be used but the weight still there. I have seen wheelchair body builders who look dam good and how i wish i looked like that. I havent found anyone who knows about the paralized body or a gym suited for wheelchairs and im starting to give up. I want to work on losing the stomach first and foremost before anything else, can you help me

There has been lots of excellent advice posted and I hope it's helping everyone but I must pull Matt up on his above comments about raw juice. Juice is VERY high in calories / Kilojoules and should be avoided completely by anyone looking to lose weight. A morning tea of juice, yoghurt and a banana sounds to me a like a huge number of calories. When drinking juice think of how many pieces of fruit are in the drink. Would you eat 6 oranges for breakfast? No? Well you eat the sugar from 6 oranges when you have a large glass of juice. Better to just eat the fruit and have a glass fo water. Then you feel more full and get all the fibre too!

I have been drinking Golden circle Raw juice . It tastes good and has 2 serves of fruit and veg in every bottle . My morning tea is Raw juice and Nestle diet no fat yogurt with a banana or a carmans muesli bar . If I have the banana at morning tea I have the muesli bar for after noon tea or vice versa . I also have an apple at after noon tea with skin on or a small pear . This way your food is good and it tastes nice . Every night I try to have atleast 2 cups of vegies which I steam in a wok . With the vegies you can put a low fat low carb simmer sauce thru eg Chicken tonight lite or Ragaletto . Limit your carrot to 1 small and try to avoid potato and pumpkin . Sweet potato is much better for you .

Loosing wieght does not have to be a complete lifestyle change situation ! 80% of loosing weight is all in the food. But there is just some very simple guidelines to follow and the kg's will start dropping off ! 1. Cut out all trans fats - check the Nutritional Panel and just dont buy any products that have them. 2. Eat 5 smaller meals a day to get your metabolism working. 3. Dont eat any carbs after 3pm (pastas, bread etc) 4. Do easy cardio based exercise - 30min of walking a day with some lunges etc after the walk. 5. Eat lots of fish, salads and veges. Avocados are great cause they are yummy and have all the good fats in them.
If you are given a weight loss program that is very involved and life changing, chances are u just won't stick to it so whats the point ! Follow these simple guidlines - its works ! I have done it !

Hi Hubbu, just thought I'd drop you a line of support! I also have trouble losing weight, and the only thing I have found which works (alongside diet, of course) is triathlon training, so doing running, swimming and cycling, one sport each day for an hour or two. Cycling is brilliant at shifting the pounds and swimming is awesome at relaxing stiff muscles and really targeting your core. Just running or cycling for 2 hours (if you can...) burns around a days worth of calories for me, so I try to do a 2 hour session (that's half marathon or thereabouts, or a 30 mile cycle) at least once a week. It's important to do it all in one go to really get those fat cells burning. I know it's a lot but then there is no beauty without pain! Keep it up, you'll feel so much better when the weight is gone. I really do feel your pain!

Hi hubbu, I agree that your body gets used to doing the same thing. You need to mix it up a bit. For example, when running on the treadmill, do you go at the same speed for the whole time? Trying running a bit faster for a couple of minutes, then drop back for two minutes, then go faster for two minutes and so on. Even when out power walking, break into a run for a couple of minutes every few minutes. Good luck!

Hi - i know the feeling. If you've been doing th same activities, your body gets used to it. You need to work harder and do some weights to really build your muscles.

Drugs are not the way to go. Even if you 'watch' what you eat, you may be eating too much for the amount you exercise or go about your daily activities. Also what you eat is it made by you or store-bought/processed? If you spend the time making your own food (Idon't mean going to the extent of baking your own bread etc) but by cutting out on unnecessary additivies, which you wouldn't put in if you were making it yourself you may find that eating healthier this way may drop the weight off. Also buying better quality food helps - these generally have less additives. If you do eat bread, don't buy it it the supermarket, or make sure you read the label and don't buy anything with preservatives and lots of chemicals. It's amazing what commercial bakeries put in their bread.
If you're really desperate go and see a dietitician who will give you a meal plan based on your goal and exersise regime. Aso take up wieghts - that burns more fat than jogging.

maybe your not eating enough!!! that can stop weight loss as your body thinks its starving and stores food as fat. yhere is a great facebook page Miss Fitness Health whom runs exercise challenges, more so with weights, cause weights are better for loss. and meal plans and does not cost, it is fantastic. She also has her own web site

try cutting carb intake, as it contributes to weight. Eat more protein and remember fats are not evil, they are necessary. its easy to cut carbs and it really works

Hi Anna and thank you for your response, I do make my own meals, yes your right i should see a dietitician, because I've had enough of carrying this fat around me. Thank you

The important things to know are correct food to eat, and correct serving size. Often the serving sizes on food containers overstates how much is the correct amount for a serve. It's also important to realise that say an adult man can eat nearly twice as much as a small woman and still eat the correct amount of food.

This is so important in trying to lose weight. I agree that seeing a dietician would be a good idea.
