I believe we need to take a rounded holistic approach to therapies / medicine. I use both - massage, yoga, pilates, meditation, fresh fruits & veges, limit pre-packaged food and use supplements like fish oil, magnesium, folic acid and take Sambucol tablets at the first sign of a cold or sinus. I also believe in letting your body fight infections to start with and only go to the doctor if after a few days things don't improve.
However - I do suffer from chronic pain and take some prescription medicines to keep that at bay but by combining them with the other non-medicinal therapies can keep them to a minimum.

I would always prefer to use natural remedies and find that I am healthier and don't need to go to the docor at all.

In some cases you can only take the conventional medicine as the natural therapies just don't work or you can't take them. I had a accident 11 years ago which the docs have said is now " complex regional pain syndrome Type 1 which i now know is incurable. I hate taking tablets but nothing that i have tried in the natural field has helped me with the intense pain i now live with. The conventional medicine doesn't cure the pain either but i at least can move and cope with it to the best of my ability. I have spent thousands trying to find a natural cure. So in some cases conventional medicines still better

Does anybody know a good natural mosquito repellant and/or remedy for severe bites? I have been bitten literally hundreds of times and have ended up with very bad scaring on my arms and legs. Tried many creams but eventually had to go to the doctors as they got infected, she gave me a script for tablets and cream. It's been 10 weeks now and I still get many bits from going outside to sit in my garden as I love reading outside. Hope someone has some helpful advise for me!

You may like to plant some lavendar into your garden keeping mozzies at bay. In the past I have used the following to stop the itching and takes the swelling and redness down quickly.....

Aloe vera dabbed onto the bites is soothing and effective. One of the best remedies before sitting outdoors is to spray yourself with this proven mixture. Not only will it keep the mozzies at bay you'll smell delish!!

a cup of warm water.
10 drops of lavender essential oil
10 drops of peppermint
add 2 tablespoons of vodka

Shake the mixutre and spray away those pesky mozzies!

If your camping stand in front of the camp fire I know it sounds silly however, the smokey affect on your body deters them.

I don't want to say which is best, but all I can say is that since taking all chemicals out of my system for the past 10 years my health has never been better. I do not use any products that have artifical chemicals in them. I do not use chenicals in my home and I try to eat fresh food, ie not prcessed. I am 66 years of age and take no medication for any ailments, not even pain killers! I don't get headaches or other aches and pains that women of my age seem to experience. I walk to most places I want to go and since joining Curves (women only gym) and use the resistent type equipment, my strenght has much improved. I am my husband's carer full time and have to do all the physical jobs about the house. If I wasn't fit and healthy there is no way I could keep doing what I do. Try getting chemicals out of your system, you will be pleasantly and healthily surprised. I do take a very good "super food" in powder form and get all the vitamins, minerals and other "super" green and red foods. Just a teaspoon a day keeps me well!

I have Diabetes and have found conventional does not help greatly however a combination of both Natural and Conventional has seen a great improvement in the last 12 months.

I am a very firm believer in natural therapies, and would always seek a natural solution in the first instance. My two year old granddaughter has an incurable and possibly life threatening condition which can only be treated medically with the horror combination of steroids and a chemotherapy drug, but using these drugs together with energy healing has allowed her to overcome the toxic side effects of the medication.

I use both extensively. I use conventional for medicine for diagnosed conditions which can't be cured by natural medicine. I use natural medicine when I feel run down or low on energy. I prefer Chinese medicine and find the combination of herbs and acupuncture via effective.

Our family uses a combination of conventional and alternative. When our daughter was four she kept getting ear infections. The doctors, obviously kept prescribing antibiotics but as we know they take their toll on the body. Next I went to a naturopath who is also a doctor and he advised that she drink rice milk. He said that many kids are not ready to drink cows milk he said as they are not ready to process the protein. We did put her on rice milk and there were no more ear infections.

Thank you everyone for sharing a wonderful wealth of knowledge!!. I come from a long line of natural healers and leave no stone unturned seeking natural remedies for healing purposes.
In today's society it is sad to think healers continue to be poked and prodded lol...proving the endless benefits of natural healing that continues to divide western and natural therapies.

Pharmaceutical companies benefit through advertising the benefits of their products leaving many addicted to the belief of health and wellbeing.

I hope I'm around when governments realise natural therapies are the very reason cultures survive the world generations over and take action allowing natural therpaies to become part of every primary and secondary education.

Doctors should be able to give advice both ways...Natural therapies can help before and after medication so we have less chemicals..man made ..in our system and we can be told and guided to a better Healthier life style .So our doctors need to change as well..

Kate, I agree,I have been on Anti Depression Tabs not a good idea, I think they put a bandaid over the real issues. I hope all is well with you now.

Depends on the circumstance. Natural therapies generally take longer

Cher yes and with all of the side affects with any medication, the chemist I have gives out sheets with them on it. It would pay for doctors to give out more info.on this, each medication if they can not give alternative natural medication. After having six years of music and a conversation in my head theNew doctor, after telling 2 other Doctors about this, and being Put on Anti Depression Tablets I had a Brain Turmor removed.which were found in tests of using flashing lights to look at the brain activity better medicationthan drugs

Kate, that is an excellent idea, wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to visit our GP's and receive information, guidance on both, everytime we visit our GP's most would not even hear of it, if we could work together for a better solution that would be a better way to go, but I don't think that will happen in our lifetime. To many disbelievers out there - if they only knew what they are missing out on ,and took the time to search alternative treatments, there would be a better quality of life.

Before answering the question I would remind people of the old adage ... "you are what you eat" Consider what you have been eating/consuming the last 5,10,15 years. PWwoaaah ! A whole heap of artificial gunk in the form of addititives/enhancers/colourings etc, methinks. Hmmmm. Could this be a cause in the rise in various cancers etc plaguing the affluent Western world ? Now, what was was the question again ?

Thanks Dogs .We seem to be on the same wave length with a few variations...I believe in keeping an eye out for all the chemicals and artificial "everythings" in our everyday lives. However I also believe in life is for the living ,and enjoy it ,and most of all "all things in moderation".I also believe in being thankful and grateful for the good health and many good things life has dealt me.despite challenges along the way.cheers indeed and very good health to you too.

.Hi Seranita. Yes, of course genes do have a definite influence. Also, we ALL will die from something or other. Ignoring accidents, murder and suchlike events, something WILL finish us off eventually despite all our efforts to prolong life through a sensible lifestyle etc. I have exercised regularly for decades and believed and recognised the truth in the statement that whilst it probably wont extend your life more than a couple of months past the 'ordained' span it will improve the quality of it. It also helped me to survive major surgery 4 years ago at the age of 67, dodging a genetic bullet and this would not have been the case if I didn't have a healthy cardio-vascular system BUT my heart will stop one day. I guess what I'm saying is, take advantage of all the good advice that is out there and available to us now and nurture our health as best we can and enjoy the result NOW while we are still able. Cheers and good health :)

There is a big problem with quote conventional medicine it is made buy ph., companys that make millions of dollers and money talks. It is a proven fact that most diseases can be traced back to the lack of minerals, bad food choices and lack of excersize.

Since I am a Kung Fu master who makes herbal trauma treatments, I would have to say some natural alternatives are excellent. I supply group one race horses, trainers, riders, and extreme sports people, not to mention aged people and the general population.

Many of the herbs I use are only now being used by pharmaceutical companies. They tend to use only a few of them. We use 10-14 in each formula, obviously they are safe and combined in specific ratios.

The results I get from people and animals is more than just good. Top race horses don't use my products for any other reason but because they genuinely work. Some have used expensive conventional methods and had no luck. Only to find my in expensive solution gave them fast and lasting results.

Martial artists are reluctant to share their knowledge with the world, however the new breed such as myself are changing that. The body does all the healing, we simply need to give it what it needs to do its job correctly.

Half of what they call conveltional medicine is based on the chemicals found in old natural remedies anyway, they have just been refined or made in a lab.
I find the herbs work better than the pills nine times out of ten so I don't generally bother with conventional medicines.
