Ocean's 13

So... The lads are back with another bank robbing story.

After Ocean's 12 I thought we might be done following the adventures of the "can't help but love 'em" team of law breaking, fun loving cons. Personally I really enjoyed the first and second film. The appeal for Ocean's 11 & 12 for me was the writing - the witty lines thrown between the characters. The characters are out to enjoy themselves, and it's clear that the actors themselves have a lot of fun on set too!

(So they get paid more money than most of us will ever see AND they get to have a lot of fun earning it - not bad if you can get it.)

The general release for Ocean's 13 is just round the corner. Will you be going to see it? How do you feel about sequels? Is there a limit on how many you can watch before you numb to what's potentially a great story line and a brilliant cast?

The question you can't help but ask is "will this be the last one?"

As with many sequels - How many more banks can they rob and still keep us entertained?

Has the movie industry gone 'sequel crazy'??!

So now that it's out in cinemas - Who's seen it?

What did you think? Better than 12? Worse? Over it? Or did it restore your faith in Danny Ocean and his colleague's?

Whats not to love, i love all ocean's! and sequels, especially if it's a good movie, why not carry it on. i mean when you've got George Clooney, Brad Pitt And Matt Damon Gracing the screens, (along with others) whose complaining?

13 is sooo much better than 12. I'd probably watch 14 - on TV!

I haven't actually seen Oceans 11 or 12 and had no idea what 13 was about when I went to see it in the cinema. I wasn't dissapointed... I loved it!! The movie was absolutely fantastic and the storyline was very imaginative and impressive.
Seeing this movie has actually made me want to see 11 & 12, it was that good.
With regards to movie sequels, I don't think they are a bad thing. If the original movie is that good the why not extend it to another one? or two? or three? Sometimes, the story is too long to fit in the one movie and is very successful with sequels.
TV programs NEED to have sequels, I think it's great to see shows that are going onto 4th or 5th seasons.
One example is 'Lost'. One replier says that they don't like seuels to Lost. While I have to agree, I find it extremely annoying how some questions aren't answered, instead more mysteries are revealed, however, I am still very intrigued to watch the final series and find out about the island.
So my final verdict, Oceans 13 was great, and sequels are also great. If you loved a movie, then it is great to see a sequel rather than watching the movie again.

Nothing new - movies have gone the same way as other businesses. with sequels and lots of other revenue streams you now call them "franchises". It is the same with others. Michael's Patisserie has just opened here. Good, but I am sure I'd like the small original shop best...

To give credit to all franchise operators and founders - getting your money is not the only reason to franchise...! I've just opened The Daily Scoop which is undoubtedly the bets hand made ice cream within one tank driving distance from Melbourne, and I was getting franchise enquiries within the first week of opening. People simply recognise the opportunity and want to share it. If you create something you also want to give your customers more... Movie makers als owant to bring more and better of their own product, unfortunately it is hard to do it all over again with the same quality and same element of surprise to the viewers...!

Load of crap 'bout time they stopped making these "sequels." Oceans 11 was the best.

What is it about sequals? They just never measure up to first one. I think Oceans 11 was defiantly the best.

personally i think that some sequels are not as good as their predecessors but oceans 13 is a pretty good movie. actors, scenes, music and effects were all stunning and it was a great storyline. It was great how it allowed you to understand it if you had not sen the first two but if you had a lot more of the plot tied together.
Top movie in my opinion, well worth my $10 ticket

I thought the first 2 movies were both different, funny and clever. The cast should have stopped at Ocean's 12 because 11 & 12 were so successful. I was totally disappointed in both the storyline and the acting skills in Ocean's 13, I was so interested that I fell asleep during it. If a movie is truly captivating than I would NEVER fall asleep. For such a fantastic cast I was really disappointed.

i really enjoyed both ocean 11 and 12 .... so much i have them on dvd, i was suprised when i heard they were doing another one cos i thought it was all over after the second one, i thought 13 had a good story line like the others, trying to get revenge on someone haha. but i still believe 11 was the best of the three

So whats the problem with hollywood i know they like to recycle stories but please will the studio,s stop making this type of film. I have no major issue,s with the film as some light escapism even though the storylines feel like they are stretching more and more into the make believe. With the quality of the cast i would prefer to see something else

Kinda like the meteor/dinosaur moment for mine, except that had lasting impact. Only Damon has a career of interest still before him & no doubt insisted on his final write-off line, metaphorically leaving behind the venality of his "cool" mentors.

Everything was kind like NW's snuff edition.

Enough!

Well I just watched it last night at Unimovies at UOW. Gotta say im not a huge Oceans fan as Ive only watched the first one (vaguely remembered) and the last one I havnt seen Oceans 12. That said I really enjoyed it but I gotta say not a huge fan of the split camera scenes, but I believe it worked for this movie. All in all a fun watch with quirky lines and the wish that If you wanted to screw someone over it would be that fun too.

The Ocean's movies are pretty well recieved and the sequels have been highly anticipated. I think each story has worked well, 13 was fantastic. I'm actually wondering in hope, if there will be a Oceans 14.

I thought it was great. They have gone back to the winning formula of ocean's 11 after their previous flop (in my opinion). It was quirky and fun, while at the same time being obscure and totally over-the-top. I love the extreme efforts that the gang go to in order to achieve their means. I will definately be buying this on DVD and making all my friends watch it (many of whom decided to not watch it after ocean's 12).

In some cases it is better to have a few really good movies and finish them off. In some other cases they've hit something that people are addicted to and they want more. The idea can continually be expanded and the sequels could roll on forever, or there abouts.

If a movie goes well and people love it, why not make more. People will say that they shouldn't make anymore but that is just a select few. The movie will still draw huge audiences, and if the general viewers love it then they should keep making them. If the results of the movie are less than satisfactory then it is time for an end.

People like a good story, but what good is a story if its too short or there is never another book made?

My answer is to this, is based primarily on the film itself.
If there are no good idea's for another sequal to take place, dont push it. Leave it at that. If the writer has a good story line in place for anothe rmovie to go on, let it be as well. If the movie is a success then we will keep watching the sequals untill it gets lame and/or boring. I have seen oceans 11 and 12, and i believe that they both provided a good story line, good twists and a good ending to each one. I always find movies with which have alot of thought going into it, always the best. They provide a good story line, a good twist and an ending you could never see possible. For oceans 13, i cant wait untill i see it. I think it will be awesome, though im basing that on the previous experience with the movies.
i have 2 examples of sequences, one good one bad. A bit of the topic of movies, but still sequeals.
1) Lost - as the first post pointed out, Lost was awesome the first season, though after that i started to lose interest because of the fact that i couldnt see it ending soon. Im sure that 'Lost' would of lost many viewers and i just dont understand why channel 7 i still showing it on prime time television. I heard they have signed for another 3 seasons of lost too, which i find it just bloody stupid. I really do believe by next season it will of stopped, if not moved to another time.
2) second example of a sequeal in which has been a success is the Harry Potter books. Personally im not a huge fan, and i know for a fact there has been about 6 or 7 books which have all been extremely successful.

So what i am trying to say is, that if the writer/director has a good idea then yes there should be no stopping the sequeals, though if the writer/director is just putting another sequeal out there for the fact of having one, without having a good storyline to it, then thats just stupid.

Yes, I will be going to see it, looks good, saw the shorts when I went to see the 3rd "Pirates" movie which was great. I think that when they are on a good thing, they should stick to it & obviously by the box office numbers people love them, so why not keep making them.

  • 9th Jun 2007 09:38am

some of these "sequels" are slightly worn out now with the same old dialogue, jokes and faces and attempted action sequences, it is about time for a complete turn around and a new start with fresh new ideas

  • 7th Jun 2007 05:50pm

What I love most about the Ocean's 'franchise' is that 2 sequels later its still great to watch! Even thought the first was a remake of the classic sinatra film it was a completely different story: one casino and one vault not 3, different tricks and twists and still a fantastic movie. George Clooney is fantastic, he is just soo cool. The Clloney, Pitt header and Damon protege is great to watch on screen and just seeing so many great-to-watch, talented actors all running around in the same place at the same time is too hard to resist. Keep 'em coming I love 'em and I know Ocean has many more friends we havn't met yet

  • 7th Jun 2007 05:47pm

i really enjoyed 'ocean's 11', but '12' seemed a little half-hearted to me. A few too many sequels coming out lately, what with 'pirates' and 'spiderman 3', but to me, the sequels hardly ever live up to the orginals.

Alicia
  • 7th Jun 2007 03:52pm

With a group of actors this good, how could they not make a sequel!! As far as the next one goes, who knows. The producers will wait and see how much cash they get from this one first.

Some movies are great and need a sequal, while others should be left alone.

geloba
  • 7th Jun 2007 03:12pm

Yes I believe they have. They are using sequels as a means of generating more revenue, depending of course on the success of the movie they are using for a sequel.

Sooo over it! Saw the first one, can't remember much about it other than was really bored...have only seen parts of the second one while hubby watched it, also was too bored to even give it more than 5 minutes of my attention, so as for the third one......not going to waste my time. I agree with another post on here, what is wrong with the script writers, so many boring sequels and I also find it annoying and disappointing that film makers also think that you only have to throw together a few so called hunks and you have a hit....NOT!!!!

  • 7th Jun 2007 01:15pm

Loved the first one. Liked the dialogue and characters in the second but plot was crap. They definatly could have done a lot more with the action and heists. Looking forward to the third but don't expect it to be a great film.

  • 7th Jun 2007 12:43pm

I loved the first movie. The second one was only ok. I won't be seeing the third - it already feels like they're milking the whole concept for all it's worth. Like you've said, how many banks and casinos can they hit before it just gets boring. The writing is good, and I love the stylish filming and soundtracks, but that's about all I think I'd get from yet another Oceans sequel.
The movie industry is a little sequel crazy in my opinion, and that doesn't just apply to the Ocean's movies. There is a tendency to only commit money to producing sequels (and more) or remaking older movies ... always following the tried and true rather than making and releasing something new. What will Hollywood do when everything has been remade several times over and sequels created for them all? Citizen Kane 4 anyone?

If there is money to be made they will keep it going. The next one will be with the next generation of actors with Brad and George passing on the tricks of the trade or perhaps mystery Brad and George son's will appear for Oceans 14

i think the movie idustry hasnt gone sequel crazy but if the first movie was good they will make a second one and it will be paying alot for the actors and it will make alot in the box office and even it the movie wasnt soo good people watch the movies just for the actors these days like i love will ferrel and i just watched that stranger then fiction the other day and i have no idea why i watched it but that is an example for you so the movie will make a decent amount of mony even if it isnt good.

Yes the movie industry has gone sequel crazy. I haven't seen any of the ocean movies and they are not my cup of tea. But Oceans 11 seems to follow the trend of sequels for money (anyone for Shrek 3, Spiderman 3, Oceans 4695?). And remakes are just as bad. The mainstream movie industry is really churning out a lot of crap these days, anything to grab a demographic. Lets not patronise these movies just for the franchise sake and lets have some new stories coming out of the industry for a change.

On DVD - Talledaga Nights with Will Farrell - its about nascar racing. It could be just my sense of humour but it had me laughing so hard I had tears running down my face!

Mmmm to be honest that one didn't grab me. I haven't watched it so I can't give an opinion but it just didn't look like it was for me. I do like Will Farrell's character in some of his films but not all - maybe I should give it a go one day?!

It does seem like originality in scripts for "mainstream" films is few and far between these days. When I watch something that hasn't been done before it restores my faith in the movie world but it's not something that happens very often.

Seen any films recently that you'd recommend? - cinema or rental - Something that got you talking?

I think that sequels are all well and good as long as the creators stay focused on the original aim of the franchise, and so far Oceans 11 and 12 have kept to their premise and built upon them very well. I will go and see it as i usually see the latest stuff, her'e's to hoping it is still a good flick.
Cheers

I am looking forward to Oceans 13 but will probably wait for DVD release. I will leave the decision of another sequel until I have seen it. I think with sequels they normally start to go downhill before they get really bad and Oceans 12 was still very good. I dont know if all those big name actors would sign up to do another sequel if it was going to flop.

I can't believe they're making Ocean's "13" after a half hearted effort in Ocean's "12". "11" was good, it had all the items of a great movie.

I will see "13" but only in the hope it is as good as "11". I'll be crossing my fingers.

You should have a topic on Pirates. I found it so confusing and loved the first two movies and the visuals in the third were spectacular but with so many twists and turns and deals being made and broken, I couldn't keep up. And I recommend you see the first two before seeing the third because it starts straight off with where it left off in the second. And Johnny Depps bit in the desert was fantastic, its there that you really see him shine as an actor.

I love a sequel when the movie is good and sometimes the sequels are better than the first or they get better as they progress with the story.
I will see it ,but whether it is at the movies or when it comes out on video depends on whether I get out of the house.
Star Wars is great evidence of a movie that was fabulous in its original form and then got better through to the the final of the first 3, Indiana Jones is another fabulous movie set...as long as the movie has a good story and interesting characters and a stellar cast why not reproduce it? Hollywood is like any money making organisation, if their is a market for it they will supply if not they will move onto the next project!

I saw it last night and really enjoyed it, more so than 12. The storyline is quite original for a "robbery", the acting, as usual is fantastic and the writing is brilliant. If you're a fan of either 11 or 12 go see it!

BD
  • 6th Jun 2007 08:09pm

First of all, I really enjoyed the con in Ocean's 11. Ocean's 12 was good too, but I preferred the original. I'm looking forward to Ocean's 13, but I'm not going to stake out the cinemas waiting for it.

I think there are too many sequels around these days. The major problem is that writers put all of their good ideas to make a film successful. When the film is released and becomes very successful, the writers see their opportunity to make another movie with little pressure as it already has a prequel with a good reputation. As a result of putting all of their good ideas into the first movie, the sequel usually has a poor plot and is a failure. A prime example of this is the Austin Powers series. By the time the third movie was being written, they were recycling the same jokes as in the first movie. And i hear they're planning a 4th movie...someone help us, please.

BD
P.S. It's a little off topic, but the same thing is happening in TV. The first season of Lost was brilliant, but they're dragging it on now because of this and there's no end in sight.

Yes TV does jump on the sequel wagon too. 24 is definitely guilty of it. I've watched series 1 & 2 which I really enjoyed, and I'm likely to watch the rest at some point on DVD. But maybe 24 is an example of still getting it right? I think it's one of the more successful series that's gone past a second/third series.
