When I helped out to grow grass in my backyard we put the grass seed down in little sections at at time to ensure that there were no gaps in our new lawn and after we had finished doing all the sections we layer a thin layer of organic soil over the seeds, watered it in and after a week we done the same process again and now we have really good lawn, it's a great strategy and works very well.

It can take a little time, but daily watering in the late afternoon/evening & a bit of patience & fertiliser will do the trick. If the grass isnt running & it doesn't eventually grow you may need to lift the dirt a little...

Try putting a little fertiliser and some new grass seed on the area where the grass has not come through. Water it and wait to see if it has worked.
