The area around Kanchanaburi is interesting.. easy enough as a day trip from Bangkok, also.

I went and hated it. Yes, some of the scenery and ancient palaces or temples are fine and the Tiger Monastery in Canchanaburri is just wonderful but I was upset by all the old, fat, gross Western men paying for young Thai girls and boys to keep them company and obviously sex. Everywhere we went in Bangkok, Phuket or Jomtein my husband was accosted and sometimes even dragged by prostitutes under the guise of "masseuses" while I was jostled aside. We never felt safe at night and there are heartbreaking beggers everywhere many with tiny children. No, never again, I will stick to Bali!

I love Thailand and have been going for over 20 years. There is always that old men chasing young Thai girls, especially in Pattaya, I think they think they are young again, and some are so naive too thinking the girls will wait for them on their next visit, well for them its on with the next one!

I find despite this I love the shopping and going out to restaurants alot cheaper there than Australia's high prices clothes shopping is great too and cheap.

I will be going with my husband in November to Sukhumvit Bangkok (lots of expats there) Pattaya, and to a lovely place called Rayon to the Novotel in a resort type place which is very relaxing and cheap.

It depends upon what type of holiday you want/
Bangkok is full of culture markets, shopping and food and if you want adult entertainment there is an area for that too.
Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the north is otherwise known as the golden triangle
You can go into the mountains and elephant rides, meet the local tribes (Karon tribe who have elongated necks by using necklaces to stretch them
Or beach holidays Pattaya on the east coast or Phuket on the West side or even some of the island, Ko samui, PiPi

Close, their necks are not elongated, the shoulders are pushed down. Image the weight of so many brass rings...
