Try Aldi. My dad bought his latest basic phone (which has a camera) from them and loves it. Dad is 85 and on a pension so had a limited budget.

Dad paid $35 for his however I noticed in this week's catalogue they have phones advertised for $69.95 - https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/saturday-25-january-2014/saturday-detail-wk04/ps/p/big-button-mobile-phone/

On a cheap budget , I would look anywhere other than telstra.
their prepaid costs can be pretty high.
If your going to send a lot photos then I'd have a look at the pre-paid cost of sending them.
If you want to remain on pre-paid,Personally I would look at an alternative provider, buy an unlocked phone that can be used on any network.
And look around for a good deal from another network provider.
If you want cheap - Aldi uses the telstra network minus 4G and your prepayment will last for up to 12 months.- Amaysim looks pretty good too.
If you are going to start sending a lot of photos your usage might change and you might find a phone sold with a plan suits you better.
It really depends on how and how much you use the phone and with so many deals and phones to choose from it gets confusing.

In that case my personal approach would be to divide my purchase into two targets
1)the phone hand set only, it has to be unlocked to be used on any network. Then 2) select the network you want to use
I went in to my local dick smith store they had a selection of unlocked phones and the guy there was pretty knowledgable about different features such as picture quality pixels and features I don't need or want. If you go to a phone company they will want to sell you a phone locked to their network.
I chose to go with Aldi for my network, but there are also others That sell you the sim (at a shop if you want) but you'll end up connecting on the Internet by yourself it's not hard (I managed it)and you can recharge in a selection of ways. They will give you a new phone number or you can transfer your old one.
It's all in their blurb on the Internet.
There are features on some unlocked phones like duel sim for a second line to the same handset. You won't get these phones from a telephone company they want to lock you in to their company only.
In the end I bought a phone for just over $100. It is duel sim, but I only need one. I could probably have paid a lot less because I only want it for calls and texts.

I don't want to send photos just be able to download them to my laptop

Good info, but the photos I only intend on downloading to my laptop not sending to people

Maybe you could look at a capped plan and get a phone with it, that you pay off over the contract. I would stick to Telstra, as they have by far the best coverage. Unlike say Vodaphone which has a lot of black spots and areas with no coverage at all.

It is all too much for me.I have a basic mobile which I love

My main phone has nothing else but calls and now sms. Still does the job I need and well into its second decade now. Bought the brick about one week after digital first come to Melbourne and it has survived many near disasters on loading docks, depots and unscheduled treks along the roadway. Down to my last spare battery so the passage of time will eventually see it retired.
