Halloween over for another year, but should we be celebrating?

I'm torn over Halloween, but only a little. My American friends say it's a lot of fun for their children but I think their perspective of it is steeped in having a history of it and being set up for it. If we wanted the right atmosphere for trick or treating, we'd have to wait until the children's bedtime otherwise it's way too light to go out. If there isn't a critical mass of neighbours taking part, I think it would be a big disappointment and kind of embarassing to boot! Our neighbourhood had a few children wandering around but they looked pretty forlorn.

Do we need another bit of Americana in our lives? Do we understand what Halloween means to them and would that have the same relevance for us? I think if we do Halloween we should understand the reasons for it.

There is many meanings behind the traditions of Halloween / samhain / los meurtos / all hallows eve depending on your heritage and or beliefs
Sadly some people get their information from the internet , where someone else has put some not entirely true creativeness into the history of it.

Correct we are Australia , not america or any other country , but we are filled with people from various cultures and religious beliefs including Pagan
We are not Ireland but happily celebrate st patricks day.
We are not all christian or catholic but happily celebrate Christmas & Easter
We are not China , but a lot of us happily celebrate the Chinese new year and so on

For those that wish to celebrate halloween for some fun -I say go for it , you are not hurting anyone.

I celebrate it as a pagan but will also decorate my yard and have candy because the kids in the area love it and it makes me happy, and does not harm anyone

Halloween is just another load of rubbish taken too far by commercialism! It is not even American let alone Australian...it was originally an IRISH pagan tradition and halloween stoof for "All Hallowtide - Feast of the Dead!"............Apparantly the 'jack-o-lantern' came about because in the eighteenth century an Irish blacksmith named Jack who colluded with the Devil and was denied entry to Heaven. He was condemned to wander the earth but asked the Devil for some light. He was given a burning coal ember which he placed inside a turnip that he had gouged out.

Nothing to do with bratty kids throwing eggs at peoples homes if they don't get lollies and other goodies as handouts!
