I went to see 'Mental'. Now while I didnt like all the language, over all I thought it simply great. It was funny, sad and happy, and at times stupid. It and many Aus films dont get support or good reviews. Its a shame as this is what makes the cash to get more Aus films up and running. Any one else agree?

Australian films can be excellent and are often highly regarded throughout the world other than America. Although we can and do make the high budget action flick in this country, this doesn't relate well with most Australian stories. We have the highest standard of actors, filmmakers and technicians, but for many reasons, lack a local interest in our stories. Australians have grown up on a diet of high budget but "low nutrition" Hollywood movies, and wrongly believe that the lack of gloss in an Aussie film, means that it is not of a high standard. Support our film industry and therefore our cultural identity before it gets washed away completely.

I watch DVDs occasionally and I am irritated by the lead-in against piracy. It starts "We all love seeing a good Aussie film...". Obviously they mis-spoke themselves- it should be "We all would love to see a good Aussie film...." because so far I have not seen one. The films will get support when they are good films, not just because they are australian. It cheapens the effort of australian filmmakers when people try to laud their efforts just because they are local and in spite of the fact they are a sad, sub-standard effort. Touting them just means the local filmmakers won't up their game and put out something worthwhile. The sad, sorry film "Australia" comes to mind immediately. Very Australian but it could not overcome the fact it was an abysmally bad movie.
