Why do you enjoy being a member of an online survey site?

Is it because you love giving your opinion? Or are you in it for the money? Perhaps it's because you enjoy the sense of community that comes from Café Chat? Do you contribute to Café Chat often? If you had the opportunity to conduct a survey on any topic of interest, what would it be and why? Do you ever worry that you're 'just a number' and your opinion isn't really being heard?

A combination of reasons for me.....while I have to admit it did start out as being just a way I could contribute some money earnt through doing surveys, I now find that I really enjoy doing them and do like that sense of belonging to a community. At the same time I do think that my opinion is just one of so many

sure I enjoy earning $ as that extra $ helps with household bills
plus i feel part of something worthwhile as i can express my opinion and find out about new trends or new products being launched in the market

i do not feel as a number, as my opinion does count! companies need the voice of people like me to tell them what i feel

It's not only about giving out our opinions but it is an interaction and networking among people to that we give out and take into consideration about our morals and views on the aspects of life and thoughts regarding to our day to day living experiences.

The reason I enjoy Cafe Study is the people you interyoact with in that there are others out there who share the same opinion as yourself. You don't realise that there are others out there who share the same vviews as you do & it's refreshing to look back at something you said & have a like mind reply.
So that said I'm not in it for the money just in here for the fact that I have something to say that is heard & that's very rare these days.

I love the fact that there is so many different subjects which may you aware of issues you may not otherwise heard about....During my employment at a National Company many of us felt we were treated as a number as mostly we got no feedback of any kind, even though a few of our suggestions were used interstate but we didn't benefit from them at our office at all....What is more they closed our IT help office and outsourced to another company in Sydney. They didn't even know what system our part was on. I had to contact a programmer at our local office to get more details as we had more than one system, and was "dobbed in" by somebody at our H.O., one of whose Depts. was waiting for the data to be sent through to them and we had been getting constant internal phone calls requesting it.
We had to have quarterly performance reviews which we were required to sign and company policy stated that we supposed to receive a copy. None of us received a copy even when we requested one. We found out that our Dept. Manager had never completed her section of it.

I do it on a variety of sites both for the reward (prefer voucher rather than entry into a draw - these are really just "clayton's" rewards) and for the fun of giving an opinion on any sort of topic / product. I'm curious what the next survey will be. I don't join in chat very often primarily because I'm too out of practice articulating my thoughts accurately, briefly, and clearly; however, I'm considering changing that behaviour - getting back into practice.

I love online survey sites. I love to think that my opinion counts. I like to hope that in some ways it makes a difference in improving quality and services. I also find that the rewards for the surveys are a great incentive.

I enjoy the exchange of opinions. Given that this site is a link to people I probably have no chance of meeting otherwise and that our communities are entirely voluntary, I enjoy reading the opinions of 'real people'. The key word is opinions...last time I checked we are all entitled to our beliefs and free expression is not yet a registered offence (yes I know about offensive opinions but restricting debate on the basis that someone doesn't agree with you is a zero-sum game).
In a perfect world, maybe we could all have our opinions as valued as the talking heads in the media.

I like the short or medium length surveys the best. I hope that by giving our opinions we will have some influence in what goes on the shelf. It's also nice to get a small reward. I enjoy the cafe chat disscussions. It's interesting and helps to see things from various perspectives. If people get nasty and personal their posts should be deleted.

I love giving opinions because I think it is being counted, at whatever small level. After all, companies are not spending heaps of money for nothing. They want our viewpoint and I am happy to give it, if only to think that it will improve further design and manufacturing of things. Up till now, I haven't really got a gift card or anything but I guess one day I will reach there.

I also love to have my say. especially when its something i'm passionate about. But also in saying that, i wouldnt be doing it for free! Sometimes i do surveys for hours at a time, so i'm using my electricity and my time. I'm honest with my answers and love it when i get replys for stuff ive posted thast others agree with. makes my opinions feel valued and i like to know there are like minded people out there.

Well, let's start with the fact I have strong opinions! And yes, I do enjoy feeling part of a community. Having said that, I also believe that there are topics that should not be canvassed in these survey sites because they are fundamentally intrusive - so I refuse to even start surveys on banking, telecommunications, computers, my business (because I'm self employed) or general finance; I don't feel there are sufficient safeguards in place to protect my privacy. But I certainly don't think I'm a number - I may e little but I'm very fierce!!!!

What do I know? After all I'm only a dog: but a pretty good student of human behaviour.
A well-written survey is always a joy to complete, especially if I get a treat for doing it. What frustrates me is when there is not a button with an option I would like to express. Hopefully someone will enjoy my input.
Chat-room discussions don't really interest me because people mainly chat about themselves, not what they can do for others - like their family, friends and neighbours.
My survey topic would be something mundane like the prevalence of wildlife near your home, or how much time you spend in the sun outdoors in winter soaking up Vitamin D.
I guess I'm not "product driven" - any bone or biscuit will do.

I enjoy giving my opinion on different subjects and the small rewards for doing so are a little solace for some of the boring, tedious questions that some surveys ask. The way the questions are asked and the responses supplied by some surveys leave lot to be disired, and un fortuneately result in incorrect responses as that is the only way you can progress with the survey.

Sometimes llfe can be so confussing that chatting about it helpes sort it out hehehe.

I quite like having a topic given to me so I can Contribute my thoughts and see how people respond.

I like to think opinions can influence products and services. I don't have time to contribute to Cafe Chat, but wish I did. I'd love to conduct a study on reasons for divorce. I am definitely also in it for the money, Rainbow. As a single mum, any extra cash I can get helps me get through to the next pay day.

Obviously the money is appreciated, but it takes so long to accumulate I wouldn't be answering surveys just for the money. I like to give my opinions, particulary on topics of interest to me as I feel it may have some influence on those who pose the questions. I like the sense of community, but haven't got into Cafe Chat due to the time commitment and lack of awareness of what is being discussed. I really only see it when an occassional survey comes my way and don't get around to specifically logging in to see if there is anything of interest I'd like to become involved with.

I'm not that confident with strangers, and find that surveys help me feel more confident within myself. I don't contribute that much in the chat room, but I find that I read a lot of them. If I had a survey of my own, I would like it to be about the changing roles in households. It would ask about whether roles have been reversed, who buys the groceries, what kind of things you personally make decisions about and which ones do you make together. I have found that with the changes inm circumstance, I have become the homemaker as my wife is now the income earner in our house. I find trends interesting and think there must be other people like me and my situation of being unable to work anymore. It's not a male thing, I think it's more of necessity now. I've never viewed myself as a number, because I feel this degrades your perception of yourself and others around you. I think it is more popular these days to ask opinions, than just bringing out improved or new products. I think the business world is more worried about a producty not selling and find that this is a good way to get the customer's perception without the huge product outlay/loss.

I thoroughly enjoy doing surveys, and love the little rewards that come from doing surveys, whether it be gift cards, paypal payments, or even sometimes products to test at home!
I was a bit skeptical at first how much my opinion really did matter to the big companies, but I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment when I saw a brand of porridge bring out a new range of flavours that I had done a survey on a few months prior.
As for survey forums, I generally don't get too involved in terms of writing, but I do occasionally pop in and have a read of the comments.

I'm in it for the opportunity to voice my opinion firstly, but also for the rewards. Although I'm quite disappointed that I haven't received any invitations for surveys or study, and still have no points yet... I'm still happy just to have the opportunity to join time chats and be heard.

  • 22nd Apr 2012 10:36pm

All of the reasons stated. I like to give my opinions and read the opinions of others too. I like to think I am not just a number and that my input has some real value. It's a way of venting your feelings when something has really affected you, without being nasty in anyway of course. The money I might earn is just a little bit of icing on the cake really. I don't really contribute as often as every day but every week or two I like to check in and read what others are saying. A topic I do feel strongly about is the way people are judged on their looks especially women. It seems men are accepted if they are less than perfect but women are constantly criticised if they are not good looking. This is especially so in the entertainment industry. What do others think

Yes, I love being able to give my opinion and feel like I am contributing. Its nice being rewarded for it and keeps me involved, I think I would still do online surveys even if their was no rewards. No, I dont worry about being a number, I understand its our feedback that is important and do believe I am being heard.
I would love to conduct a survey on freeview tv, is it better viewing tv than the old 4 tv stations.

No I don't worry about being just a number, Web pages are expensive to set up. So I'm sure someone is reading our answers. (Hope so). I'll be honest I do it for the Cash/Gift card's, whatever there gunna give me. I have to young kid's and enjoy doing this as a little (break). I like to think I will get a little something for my time as some other survey's are quite long & complicated. As for topic's I love shopping one's & I just did one for cleaners of shopping centre's, so I hope my opinion has helped them get better conditions & pay?

Alex
  • 22nd Apr 2012 02:42pm

There are a few spin-off benefits from doing surveys. One is that we are exposed to new products that might make our lives easier ... cleaners for example.
Also we are encouraged to think about what we do and why.
Things that we do on 'auto-pilot' rarely get thought about and it's a good idea to review them occasionally.

I'm a Work Study Engineer (Organisation & Methods) I like to think I run my life efficiently, and I mostly do. However I tend to neglect efficiencies in my domestic life and just do what I've always done. Some of these surveys cause me to rethink my methods of shopping and cooking etc.

Well it is certainly NOT for the money because you would never get rich doing surveys. I do like to give my opinion about products and other things.

I just hope that the companies listen to what people think. I also enjoy reading other peoples opinions.

When I first got my computer I thought about joining as many survey companies and forums as I could but then people on the first forum I joined talked me out of it.
So now I am a member of the first forum I joined 11 years ago and this one survey/forum site. I have not bothered with others unless it is a temporary panel for a specific product I have been asked to test. I am only a member of 2 survey companies and can not see this changing in the near future

For me,its both,my only asset is the Age Pension,so of cause I will do surveys for the extra cash,I have always been a shy person, and in company kept my thoughts to myself, doing surverys on line, gives me the oportunity to say what I really think about a product and other topic of interest.I sometimes feel that I'm just a number because,a lot of surveys ,as soon as I put my age in,the statement comes up",That the survey is full"I feel that some people think that when you reach a certain age your opinion doesn't matter.they should remember,Wisdom comes with Age,I feel I still have a lot to offer.

I do surveys because it seems a better use of my spare time than paying games such as Solitaire or Mahjong etc. I haven't earned enough to bother claiming yet, so I am not doing it for money although I can always use some. I find a lot of the so called give aways are a con because either the goods never arrive or you have to register with internet providers or gambling sites etc to get anything and I refuse to do this. These are, in my opinion, dishonest offers. Also I feel that I am screened out of a lot of surveys because I am over 65. Does being over 65 automatically make one's opinions useless?

I joined as many sites as I could simply to add a little to my finances originally but I now look for the surveys among the 100 plus emails I receive each day. I do not normally reply to these forums due to the amount of time spent reading all those emails however this subject caught my eye and I had to reply. It is nice to receive that little stipend every now and then and occasionally I see where something I have indicated during a survey has been implemented (which actually surprises me). Thanks for the query.

I have just done something I have not done before since joining - but I wish I hadn't. The people that leave messages that are so negative it has left me wondering why they belong to survey sites. If they feel that way they should get out and leave the surveys to people who really enjoy doing them. If they are only in it for the money then they should go out and get a full time position with a company because these surveys are really just a bit of fun with a serious side for honesty as far as the item/product is concerned. Please less negativity and more positive thinking and everyone's life would be worth living - and please do not say I do not know what it is like being confined to the house because I have been living with a broken spine for years and find it very difficult to get out and about. I thoroughly enjoy my surveys.

My goodness!!! You now also get to tell me I live in a negative world???
I'm sorry to hear that your husband died.
Its good that you were able to find your own little place in such a 'positive world', but that doesn't give you the right to make assumptions about me!!!
For the record, I too also feel good in the mornings when I get up and also when I go to bed at night. I am fortunate to be surrounded by family and friends who love and accept me.
So please stay in your 'postive little world' by all means and allow me the choice of living my life as I see fit, even if that does mean I will continue to do surveys for remuneration and not feel the slightest bit guilty or negative.
What a load of drivel.........I don't know why I'm even bothering to respond to your negativity.

I feel good in the mornings when I get up and keep positive all day and still feel good when I go to bed. I have just done something I have not done before since joining - but I wish I hadn't. The people that leave messages that are so negative it has left me wondering why they belong to survey sites....

Depends what you call 'negative' comments. I'm not sure if I'm 'guilty' as charged by your standards because I took umbrage about the moderator's comments about 'making a quick buck' and filling out various surveys each day.
I wonder how many surveys the people who are doing them for 'fun' complete on average and if this quota fulfils the needs of those relying on the survey results.
I think not, which is why these companies are prepared to pay to have the surveys completed. They want results and need people who are willing to put in the time and effort to do the numerous surveys, many of which are very time consuming.
I like to think that my opinion is being heard also, and it is gratifying to see products on the shelves that one has had a voice in.
But, for the amount of time I put in, yes I do expect to be rewarded. They are not all just about fun.
At age 64 and health not so good and being on a widows allowance I need to try and subsidise my pension. Its rather difficult to hold down full time employment at my age and with my health problems. Not too many employers would be very happy with the amount of time I would need to take off to keep my various doctors and specialists appointments.
I'm also sure there are many other grandmas/grandpas that babysit their grand-children like I do so that their children can work to pay their mortages as childcare is so expensive.
So maybe in an 'ideal world' pensioners might be holding down full time jobs.......but we are pensioners for a reason!!
So I would actually like to ask you to be a 'little' less 'negative' about others who are not just in it for the 'fun'
And how does my wanting to be rewarded for doing surveys make your (or anyone elses) life any less worth living???
It doesn't make sense.
So would you please try to be a little less judgmental? Thankyou.

Hi Rainbow.
Being a member of an on line survey site allows one to express their opinions and let the people who control what we consume, whether it be edible, drinkable, wearable, readable, useable or just enjoyable, know what suits our needs so as they are able to make decisions on what we as consumers consider acceptable for our needs.

  • 21st Apr 2012 09:03pm

i like to give my opinion because I am a consumer and a user of various products and services. I would hope that my opinion is useful and has an influence on the person who commissions the survey. The money is nice but not really that significant in most surveys.I don't think you can get rich doing surveys unless you spend hours and hours a day doing them and even then the going rate would vary between about $2 to $8 an hour in most cases.

I don't have a lot of time to contribute to chat forums as I work casually or part-time and also have a household to run. I sort of forget about visiting them unless I receive an email asking me to contribute. I have vented on Cafe Chat once when I was asked a certain question. Someone commented on my vent and supported my opinion. I even printed out their comment as I felt that someone understood where I was coming from.

I wouldn't know what topic to suggest for a survey. I would rather be surveyed with a purpose in mind .I want my opinion to make a difference.

I have not made anymoney yet - enve a small amount, and have not recieved a free gift as others have, but I have not been responding to surveys all that long - probably only around 6 months. But I do get a surprise when I have been asked about a product, or recently television shows and entertainers - and then they appear on TV.
I also agree with some of the comments above, that it is difficult to complete some surveys when they do not provide a response that enables a truthful and honest answer - ie none.
And similar to other people, I do not respond to chat forums that often either, but am becoming more familiar, and hence comfortable, as I spend more time reading peoples responses, and gauging if the forum is friendly and well moderated, and hence not likely to 'flame' as someone else in a previous reply has experienced. This certainly seems to be one of those welcoming and respectful sites - so you might see / read more of me from now on.

Hi Captain Slog,
No - I was not the Carmel that you knew in Brisbane. I have worked in MacDonalds - great training ground - but in Melbourne, and in the '70"s. Oops - giving my age away here....

Hi Carmel,
Thank you for your reply. So, the feeling I had was RIGHT! You were McDonald's Crew, you just weren't Regent Crew. What a pity! I hope our Carmel joins us one day.
You say you were at a Melbourne McDonald's in the 70's, aye? My mate and I went to Melbourne for our first big OE, and we saw a McDonalds down the othe end of Swanson Street (?). The one to your right as you look across from the cathedral to Flinder's Station. It was way down the other end, and on the right . There was a road sloping down hill at an angle, and looking through the trees we could just make aout a building that looked a bit like a "bank."
We thought it looked like a bank, because, we had never seen a lot of people lining up at the counters, like at Mac's, for meals. I remember seeing the Golden Arches, but they were just a big yellow sign, obstructed by the trees. So close, but so far. We never checked it out. If we knew what it was, we would have., and it would've been my first McDonald's Experience.
Old? I'll give you OLD! According to a Xmas Card from my cousing in 2010, I am 4560,000,000 Years old. Someone knows something I don't. Yes, she's Married. I am puzzled at how she knew. I've always known somehow, but, with Memory Wipes every 100 Years, no wonder.
Well, sorry, but I've gottagophernow. I'll catchupwithyalater, aye? Good to have you with us.Geez, its freezing this morning!

Hi Carmel,
Welcome to CAFE CHAT! Your name reminds me of one of our Crew at McDonald's Regent in Brisbane in the 80's. She was a very lovley girl, and I was very proud to call her a Friend,...

I have only just joined so have not participated until now. I was in a similar thing last year mostly philadelphia. Was nice to get freebies or a little pocket money but some of the things other ladies contributed were really interesting.
I am signed into a couple of other survey sites but never seem to qualify coz I am not in the market for a new car/phone/computer/big screen tv etc... so hoping I can contribute something even though I am only Mrs Average on modest income.

I enjoy completing surveys to help out different people and companies in their choices. perhaps to design new products or how their product/s work. Of course, if you have an added incentive of perhaps winning a prize, this makes it even more enjoyable but can be upsetting when you are continually screened out of surveys for one reason or another.

I actually really enjoy some of the surveys. I haven't gotten any rewards as yet, so I am a little sceptical but i am naturally a bit of a distracting. Some very boring too, and not particularly relevent, as I dont really have much income so the financial ones are a bit, like, i have say no answer over and over. I really enjoy the social studies ones, and some i get a genuine laugh out of, like emotional response questions, like you know, the ones that have an emotional statement and you say how much you agree. Sometimes they are very funny because it makes me really think about what i feel about something i may have never really thought that deeply about. Even though i am not a massive consumer, i genuinely hope my answers help companies to make better products for people. Yeah, i like doing the surveys, not neccessarily for my own gain, they fill my time and entertain me and i hope i get rewards one day : )

I would hope that my opinion counted for something and if along the way I happen to get paid or win a prize then all the better. I enjoy giving my opinion on different topics and it is sometimes interesting to see if other people agree or disagree with me. I contribute to surveys but not very often to forums. If I could conduct a survey it would be on pets and petcare, as I have numerous pets and even though it is costly I enjoy their company and they are all treated like members of the family. Yes, sometimes I worry that I am just a 'number' to fill a survey but always give thoughtful honest answers, and not just what they want to hear. Sometimes I don't agree with the statements and I am not afraid to say so. I also live in a reasonably isolated area and do not watch alot of TV so do not see alot of advertising that makes people 'have to have' the product. If it is something that does not interest me I will say so.

When I signed up to CAFE Study/Chat, I signed up because I was told I would be paid well for doing surveys. THen I discovered the Cafe Chat and found a place where we could make new friends and share views on a great deal of subjects. Some very interesting, some rather controversial. Some people just wanting some advice about recipes, budgeting or where they can find things, or telling people where they can find things. Bargains, etc.
I think its s delightful site to have joined, but I can't be in it every day. There is alot to see, read and reply to, but like everyone else here, we also have other things to do outside the Cafe. My return today was because I finally got another Mail alerting me to an invitation to do this comment about why I like Cafe Study/Chat.
Yes, I'd like to earn some money from these surveys, but, I haven't had any yet. As I pointed out to someone who created the discussion "Has anyone had a survey yet?" or words to that effect., we probably haven't had any surveys yet because CAFE is getting to know us from the comments we write in to and when they see which subjects we respond to the most and how much we know about them, they will send surveys related to the subjects of interest for us to do. Hence the name Cafe STUDY! In the mean time, we are enjoying having a CHAT to new friends until a survey becomes available for us to do. If I am right or not, I haven't yet had a response to tell me.
This is a very friendly site and full of nice people who are all looking for company and a nice chat, with a little advice and some useful hints as a bonus.
Thanks CAFE STUDY for being here for us.

I find that mostly my opinion is very similar to that of the other members which gives me a sense of hope that most people are still morally and personally honest and kind. In a world full of songs that make you cringe, home invasions, kids sexting on their phones it's a relief to read so many comments from like minded people.

MrsDew17 & Ziah's responses absolutely tick all the boxes about why I do surveys. It is great to be able to give an opinion & even better when you see an ad or product that you know reflects your input (along with many others). • 21st Apr 2012 10:58am

I enjoy doing surveys because i like to think that my opinion actually counts towards the future of the product that i am giving my opinion on.
I also really enjoy any little "kick backs" that might happen to occur because of my input. I really enjoy getting gift cards or payments every now and then as well as being able to trial different products. A lot of the time, i will change to a particular brand because of a taste test/product trial i had been lucky enough to participate in.
I don't contribute to cafe chat as often as i would like to because i am a stay at home mum to 4 kids and quite honestly- don't find the time to contribute to these types of forums (although if we got points for contributing, i would be more than willing to MAKE the time to come here and give my opinions and general chat in the cafe chat sections).

If i had the opportunity to conduct a survey on any topic of interest, i would love to conduct a survey of "general knowledge". I feel that there are more and more people who don't understand a lot of things that same people take for granted. Some people have no idea where their food originates (eg: milk comes from a carton from the supermarket rather saying we get milk from cows, goats, sheep, etc). I would also like to know what people believe are important things to learn about- is technology more important than physical things these days?
I feel it is important to be well-rounded with knowledge and teach my children about "basics" such as gardening, proper terminology for animals, teachuing the kids what different breeds are, etc as well as teaching them how to use computers, cook/bake, household duties such as washing, banking, etc.

Sometimes i do worry that i am just a number, especially when i get surveys that don't allow me to voice my true opinion (especially when there's no where to put a NO/don't use type answer.

I would love to think my opinion makes a difference, however small. I don't count on the money but it is a nice surprise when I have enough points to redeem something. Being part of a "community" is a nice feeling even though we don't know each other personally. Being part of Cafe Chat gives me a feeling of being able to do something which hopefully makes a difference somewhere along the line. If I had the opportunity of creating a topic for discussion it would be-"How far should grandparents be involved in the upbringing of their grandchildren?" I think this is a very interesting topic as I am very involved with my grandchildren but the rules and behaviours expected at home, are only reinforced when they are with me. I don't make new rules (other than those which must be observed in my home) for them. Their parents are very capable and I am very proud of my daughter and son-in-law. I make it as fun and comfortable for my little ones when they come to visit, as possible. I guess that's why they love to come to grandma!

I too enjoy being involved in online surveys and not necessarily for any return but it nice to get points for redemption or prizes. It is also great to see the results published for example in the Dompost or Sunday Star Times. I do think it is important to make your voice heard - as an individual it's hard to but when you have a sizable group it can make a difference. I also vote on http://www.avaaz.org/en/index.php for altruistic reasons - this is a way for people to be heard internationally on human rights issues (Uzbek women being forcibly sterilised), environmental issues, endangered species (Save the rhino) and corruption to name a few. Happy surveying eveyone :-)

Also getting rewarded for ones opinion, does help, especially in this day and age, where everything has gone up, except wages/benefits etc and one finds one struggling to feed ones children.
Any small amount helps, be it $5 or $500, it is not just about the money.

Hi Bud your question for a survey is a good one I sure would like to know how two are supposed to live as cheaply as one! The pension is actually an insult to expect those who have paid taxes and contributed to the wealth of the country are treated so badly. The pension isn't any where near enough to live on now, imagine how much more everything will cost when the carbon tax comes in. I enjoy belonging to an online survey site and love to give my opinion. I feel I am contributing to future products and services I will buy or use and if my views help develop the product chances are I'll buy it. I am on a pretty tight budget and my husband has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer so any small payment I get from doing surveys etc is most welcome and helpful. It also helps me take my mind of my husband's condition for a small amount of time. You could call it respite!
I do feel like I'm just a number doing these surveys but I do believe my opinion matters, but who I am or what I'm going through is irrelevant to the people using my ideas and answers.
I regularly feel I am being paid very little for great ideas I give that will probably make the company millions while I recoup 50 cents or $1.00, a bit unfair but I do enjoy it.
Lastly if I was going to conduct a survey it would be on cancer as I am struggling to come to terms with it and would like to know how people cope and react to such news!

There are many reasons. I like to feeI am part of a community, that shares our opinions with manufacturers and others. I do hope that we are listened to, as we are all consumers. A small part of it would have to be the money, but it certainly is not a get-rich-scheme.

I just want to say I do not think this question is anything more than encouraging all of us to look at and maybe question the reason why we do answer surveys. After reading some comments I was surprised that some think the question is belittleing and were offended. I certainly didn't get offended. I am enjoying my opinions being taken seriously and being used to maybe change the way something is done, made etc. and yes I do like receiving the rewards. I also love CafeChat.

I'm a "stay at home" mother, and doing surveys is my way of earning a little extra income while still being in the house (my youngest still nurses regularly.) I do them in the evenings when my kids are asleep, or during nap time, provided I can keep up with my household chores and my Masters study too!

I do belong to a variety of survey companies, which is enjoyable because you get a wide range of different surveys to do and can think about a lot of topics. I always put in 100% effort in answering the questions thoughtfully and honestly. I wouldn't call this making a "quick buck" (really, it said that in this week's email!) It takes a long time to work up enough points to earn a reward, and I think the average "pay" per hour of survey taking is maybe $6, if you qualify for all the surveys you attempt. When you factor in screen-outs, it's an even lower hourly rate.

Companies should be grateful there are people willing to spend so much time for such little remuneration helping them to make their products and services more successful and profitable.

It helps that contributing to development or change has its own intangible compensation; a feeling of satisfaction and a little achievement. So I guess while I'm in it for the money, I also enjoy being able to give my opinion and have it "count."

I'm not looking for a sense of community. I get that with my own local area and my church. That's why I don't participate in the non-paid tasks - I don't need the social factor, and I have really limited time so I won't do surveys that don't provide some compensation. I consider it work, not leisure.

Having said that, if I did have more time (say if I were retired and my children left home) I think I'd really enjoy the survey communities.

I love, love surveys as I do love having my say on a variety of subjects. I am a subcriber to some very interesting sites and have answered many interesting survey questions. I have been invited and participated in "live" forums because of completing surveys - very enjoyable and having the chance to contribute to a live forum is very satisfying. They pay very well too! I love Cafestudy/Cafe Chat and enjoy reading and replying to other members comments. I have been very fortunate to have won a gift card or two as well because of my comments. I have always had a strong opinion about things I am passionate about and having an outlet to express my opinion is great.

Now to suggesting a survey how about this -

The new Coles Flybuys card - Do you think it is an incentive to shop at Coles?

Yes - reward cards are a good way of getting a discount on certain items
No - reward cards aren't worth the effort of joining and just a way to get you to shop Coles

Not sure if there would be enought interest in this subject, but as it is "news" at the moment I thought it might get some interest going.

I love the new Coles Mastercard. I can get Flybuys now at any store, business, even when not shopping at Coles so why not be rewarded? Living in a rural area I have a long drive to a shopping centre and at Coles I find everything I need. The nearest Woollies which is only slightly nearer, often has empty shelves, doesn't have what I want and the lighting in the store makes me feel unwell and dizzy.

  • 20th Apr 2012 11:33pm

Various reasons. Sure, the few extra dollars is good, but its hardly enough to start renovating your house or buy a car. That nice looking Tshirt maybe! But I've found that most of the surveys are very interesting, and its nice to actually be able to give feedback and influence the items that most of us will purchase one day. I went to a taste test one day for tomato sauce thinking " they'll all be the same" and it was shocking to find how different 8 different sauces can be!!! Its also good to know other people's impressions and reasons for liking or disliking a particular item, and there;s always the added benefit of being able to see something before anyone else.

I don't contribute to the Cafe chat often as I find the topics are not maintained too frequently and the conversations are not stimulating. Same thing with another forum where I was posting 5-6 times a day but that was because the community manager or whatever her title was was constantly replying, inciting others to add their comments, and the converations was lively, funny and interesting. One day she posted saying she was leaving for another job and since then the others who took over didn't do the same things she did and gradually most within that forum started posting 1-2 a week instead of 5 a day! So I think this forum needs to be spruced up, made more interesting and have a forum moderator that actually replies and sources more information. as that is the only way people will actually add to it. I know others are very active here but that was just my experience with Cafe Chat within theCafe study forum.

.....because market research - the process of ensuring utmost return to a company - is such an altruistic persuit! Come on - are you serious with that loaded question about 'are we just in it for the money?' Yeah sure, we're the bad guys here! If our opinion & time is in fact valuable, as I hear all the time, then why should it be expected for free? And if it's not expected for free, then why the pretence that we should be doing it for nobler goals - like helping grow & shape the community, or whatever it was that you said that I am paraphrasing here.

Of course we are all doing this for a reward. Our time IS finite & also valuable, especially in that companies are paying you guys to garner this information from us on their behalf - or are you suggesting that you are only in it for the feel good factor & donate your time freely?!

I don't usually join in chat forums as I don't have piles of spare time to do so. Nor do I think (with the exception of now, cause I am a bit annoyed by your question & felt the need to answer it honestly & bluntly) that people out there care to necessarily hear every little thought I have as I am sure they all have a life that matters too & little free time to themselves. If we need chat rooms & the like to feel connected in society & part of a community, we are really failing at it. We are not making real connections here, we are just anonymously saying what we think - & let's face it - we are doing it so that companies can figure out how best to sell to us so that we buy more of their stuff!

I just don't understand what that faintly velied passive aggressive assault on your members was meant to produce. Was it made to make us feel guilty for being rewarded & expecting to be? Are we to feel guilty if we are members of more than your survey group, as if we are being duplicitous & greedy - 'just in it for the quick buck'?! Are you suggesting that our motivations are not quite as worthy if we do not just wish to contribute for the greater good somehow? (Question is - greater good of who?) I really don't see the point of asking a question in such a way as to almost strike at your members for doing what you clearly wanted them to do in the first place. I am not an easily offended person, but I am quite offended by your inference & assumptions you make from such a superior position. What was to be gained?

My sentiments exactly Chris. I too am offended by the comments made by Rainbow.
I'm sure that she doesn't do her job just for 'love' and that she expects to be paid for her time.
Is it so wrong that we might expect to be paid also?....pittance that it sometimes is.
And is our time not valuable also?

I have a couple of reasons why I like being a member of an online survey site.
Firstly is the fact that hopefully my opinion will add weight to the direction a survey is going, for example if they want to know about shopping habits and why you do or do not buy certain things.
Secondly in the case of surveys on standard of service, the service in a lot of stores, govt depts , restuarants etc is so bad that if my added comments via a survey will help improve the service then that is good.
Thirdly I do do them to build up points to get gift cards for woolies or coles or bunnings or to get cash because as my only income is the widow allowance and that is $536 a FORTNIGHT and I have a mortgage still, then those gift cards or cash is often the only way I get to buy food.

There are surveys and there are surveys. Years ago when I was introduced to the Internet I joined as many survey sites as I could find. I filled in absolutely every survey going. Not so now! Loads of surveys are way too long and want to know way too much with meagre rewards. I get annoyed if surveys are over 15-20 minutes long and if they want too much personal information or become to repetitive. Case in point I had a survey offered today which said it should only take 50 minutes to complete. 50 minutes!!! Why on earth should any survey need to take 50 minutes I ask you??? I still belong to several survey sites which seem to value my opinion.

I enjoy on line surveys because you can tell your opinion without being afraid that someone is going to call you names for wanting to say what you feel about a product or item. If you go on voice recording with them or some banks etc. they ask for you to key your ref. number etc. in via the phone.
It really annoys me if banks ring you and ask for your date of birth Our reply is you rang me on my phone, you have my information you tell me the information you have and I will confirm it if it is correct. They don't like that. They forget that our accounts pay their wages...

As a SFR, my life is fairly full. I hadn't expected to be so busy in retirement, so my participation in CS is fairly minimal. Any 'reward' for participation goes straight to my 91 y o mother, who receives gift cards almost weekly, as a result of survey sites. She'd never accept charity (even from family) but her mailbox frequently provides a Christmas Stocking treat, brightening her nineties. Cafe Chat? It's rare that I participate, not because I lack a 'sense of community' (I live in a dynamic coastal country town) but more because there's often an undercurrent of grievance, of complaint, of unfairness, from some participants. I simply don't wish to be part of that negativism. When I find myself tempted to respond "Hey, wake up and smell the coffee... you're ALIVE, Australia does have a SAFETY NET... you live in the best country-in-the-world!" I simply log-out instead. No, I've never worried that 'I'm a number' or that I'm 'unheard'. I'm very lucky to be here, now, connected to the Rainbow...

I enjoy taking part in surveys because it gives me the opportunity to provide my opinions on a range of topics. You certainly don't do it for the money as the rewards are usually small and take quite some time to build up enough points for a reward. I don't take part in chats as such because this would mean more time in front of the computer and I would rather be out in the garden. If I had to conduct a survey it would probably be on something to do with imported foods that can be locally produced and the affect on the Australian market.

I like being able to give my opinion about a controversial topic. I also like being able to earn a small amount of money for the time (and experience) I put into my answers.
1, ) Now if there were a site that asked for opinions with no reward would I comment .
Yes if I felt that what I said or thought was important enough to perhaps make a difference or help someone and the instigator of the survey were not gaining some commercial advantage. Thus I contribute to a number of forums on problems with and how to use graphics programs. Also in playing games there are certain kudos in being able to help or show someone how to complete a difficult level of a game. All this is done free as a contributary and mutually beneficial learning experience as I also learn from the problems of others and helping to solve them.

2.) What about a site that is used to help others make a commercial gain eg surveys about burger prices, advertising campaigns, etc. and offers chances to win a monthly prize or be in the draw for a reward
- no way there are very few winners and the rest are exploited free workers.

3.) What about a site that gives a reward of points or entries or both. commensurate with the time you have to spend on the survey.
Yes however the points rewards must be able to be converted into a cash reward, not a voucher to some major store I will never visit or for some other advantage which is a non advantage to me.

4.) What about a site that rewards comments with definite points that can be converted to cash and also offers incentive rewards for best open answers to a question. Certainly show me the way.

5.) Best of all is the one that give me a garanteed cash amount each month for comments on a huge variety of topics from hormones in meat, through using credit cards to the spirit of anzac and rewritten history.
Don't you dare try and keep me away from that one. Inherent in that one is that I must be honest enough to earn my rewards and so although I see a lot of others make one line comments to set up their 3 comments per week I am committed to go further and even do a little research to make sure my opinion is based on some fact.

As an older person, I like to think my opinions still count. Doing surveys is a diversion from everyday living alone and they do keep the mind occupied. If there are benefits to doing these surveys, they r much appreciated.
One can only do so much gardening/housework in a day and therefore surveys are like an intellectual outpouring of life's experiences and/or opinions.

I do not contribute much to Cafe Chat off my own back unless an email like this is sent out. I do have lots of other activities and there r specific times when I sit in front of my laptop and answer emails or do surveys or google for knowledge.

I began to take an interest in Surveys when I realised that my mind was become a tad stale. Once I got to a certain age, I found that my time was being filled in less energetic pursuits. The one thing I have always liked to do is voice my considered opinions. I also found that my immediate circle of family and friends might have been finding this voice a bit tiresome (shock, horror, but not surprising). Doing surveys allows me to exercise this whilst at the same time keeping the grey matter active. As the saying goes "use it or lose it". So, that's what I'm doing. Doesn't hurt to reap the ocasional reward for my efforts either.

I take doing surveys seriously because I believe that what I say or trial hopefully influences the decisions of others. Word of mouth or should I say, typing your thoughts is a powerful thing. I enjoy doing them because at the same time I might be learning about a new product, new current affairs story that I probably wouldn't take notice of elsewhere or just helping someone in the forum with a problem. I love the community of forums because amongst new people I would sit back a little till I got to know you but through forums, I feel like I get to know you personally through the forums. Not being able to work I enjoy doing surveys whether it's for small points that add up or for small rewards of cash. For me, it's like a job and I thoroughly enjoy it all.
Being in the just over 50 bracket, I sometimes don't get enough surveys and when I see a trial of a product or survey that I miss out on, I think Oh come on, I buy that product, know it well.
Surveys are fun to do, plus keep your brain active and I would be so lost if they were not around to do. It gives me great pleasure to see a product on the shelves that I contributed to with trialling. I take my survey completing seriously. A fun hobby.
I don't like to think it's my age but I always check in here to read or chat in the forums.

Hi Ian and Everyone,
I thought this was hilarious! Good on you old fella! Stick it to them!
Most of the surveys I belong to, I have yet to see a bloody "reward" and one day I'm just going to tell them I'm sick of them and I'm unsbscribing. I get "screened out" because of my age, too.
Many of these sites "promise" we will get "paid well"just for doing these surveys, and they patronise us by telling how marvellous we are and "how valuable" we are to them or "how great" we are, and that they "appreciate" our opinions. I think its all BULLDUST, too. IF they think we mean THAT much to them, why the hell don't they PAY us like they said they would?
SMILE CITY Is the only one who's paid out for me so far. I got a $200. WAREHOUSE Gift Card from them. At the moment, my points talley says I can only get $50. at the moment, so I am saaving it till it gets to another $200+ in time for Xmas. Recently, another sruvey I'm with had me do an update that had a feature in it that NETWORKED with SMILE CITY which meant ALL of the points I get from their surveys will be sent to Smile City and added to my talley there.
All the other surveys, Nielsens, YOUR VOICE, and others? I'm givng them the flick if I don';t get any satisfaction soon. I keep getting Mails that tell me I am a Lucky Winner and have just WON (Choose your Prize - i-MAC, i-Phone, i_PAD), solve the puzzle and fill in my details, etc. and its to sign up to MY OPINION . . . AGAIN! And every time, they tell me I am already a member! OF COURSE I'm a bloody member! BUT, if I don't fill out those details, I lose my points. I'm seriously wondering if its all worth it at all. "NOT REALLY!" I hear everyone say.
That's it! I'll tell them all to RACK OFF! I'm sick of it. I am unemployed, NOT MY FAULT! No work here, and I'm too old. I'm 60 next month. I'm only doing these surveys to TRY and earn a few bucks to suppliment my Old King Cole. I joined CAFE for the same thing, but unlike the others, at least I can have a chat with the lovely people here.
For everyone out there, I hope things start looking up for all of us. Things MUST get better soon.
Have a good weekend, everyone. You, too, Ian. And take good care.

I am very choosie about whose surveys I do and certainly don't give information out that could be used to "rip" me off. Any of those gambling sites should be look at with care. We have a Gladstone in SA.

I know.

My wife's sister lives in Darwin (as have we twice). Sister Kath is a real problem with addresses.

It took us three years to get her to stop sending our mail addressed South OZ, rather to NSW where we lived.

We have been in QLD for 17 years now. Kath still puts NSW on our letters.

Ah, well. We do get them eventually.

I like to think that my opinion can and does make a difference. I also like the reward and it often comes just when it is really needed too. I am newish here but I have seem rewards from another company (in fact, I just partially paid for my groceries with a gift card from one of them, so just having moved house and had a cat at the vet, it really does make a difference. I have seen things I have done in surveys been introduced or changed after I have done the survey so I guess my opinion, along with every one else's did make a difference.

Another site - but it doesn't often have surveys but gives you the opportunity to give your opinion - if you have children, grandchildren etc. is Kidspot which give you the opportunity to try products - good quality too. In some states you can also gain entry to some activities, photography, shows etc.

I like to think that my opinion counts also and there is some satisfaction seeing products on the shelves that we have had a say in regarding packaging etc.
Its nice to have a sense of 'belonging' when you are part of a group such as 'cafe chat'.
I also take part for the remuneration and the odd gift card. I am a pensioner and trying to subsidise my pension which never goes far enough. I don't think that those of us that belong to several survey sites should be frowned upon or made to feel greedy. Who else is going to put in the hours we do for the small amount that we are paid. Sometimes I can spend over half an hour trying to complete surveys and not qualify for any for various reasons.
So all in all its a hard way to earn extra cash as it takes some time to earn enough points before you can redeem them. I always put the time and effort in and answer honestly.
Its never going to make me rich but it does help to balance the books, give me a little something extra and is a great help towards my christmas shopping.
I look after my grand-daughter for free so that my daughter can go to work and help pay off her mortage. If I'm willing to put in the time it takes to complete the surveys I do then I don't feel I should be 'knocked' for doing so.
Sorry but I just don't feel that I should be made to feel guilty just because a large part of why I do surveys is to 'earn' some extra money.
To me its a bit like having a part time job. Who else is made to feel guilty for working???

I enjoy doing surveys, but sometimes you are not given the opportunity for a correct answer, mainly what they want you to record. I appreciate the gift cards, but you certainly wouldnt make a living from it. I do not contribute to Cafe Chat very often, only if I see something of great interest to me, mainly live export trade & animal cruelty which is very close to my heart

I get annoyed when they ask my age ,which is over 60, then ask if I plan to get pregnant!!!!!

I have another that crops up regularly, they ask about your employment situation and after you answer that you are unemployed or retired or on a pension they immediately ask what area of employment you are in or how many people work for your organization, also without an appropriate response available.

Yes I agree you Eileen, many times I fill out the beginning of surveys my age ect (am 51) then next question do I have children under 5 ? maybe some women but not me!

On one occasion in an emergency because the Mother had to go into hospital for surgery, the govt dept was advised that care was needed for the child - they did nothing -so the Dr. known to both parties- arranged care then notified the govt. dept. so that they got the child endownment payment to help with the long term expenses.

You can't even adopt a child if you are that old. You couldn't even many years ago before young mothers chose to raise the children themselves. Friends of our applied and even though they were on the waiting lost they used to get an impromptu visit from the govt. dept. involved--no warning at all - on one occasion the lady was in the city at an appt. but the gentleman was home- they lived on a rural property - or their visit would have been a 1 hour drive each way for nothing. They admitted that they had not visited other people in the area. Yet they didn't have time to investigate cases that they should have been attending where children were being severely neglected - occasionally because of the Mother's illness - the Drs. sometimes arranged for children to go into their care.

Me too. My nieces used to spend part or all of school holidays and an average of 2 weekends a month with us. If their Mother was working before they started school we also minded them. Not bad ! She preferred her Mother-in-law to mind them rather than her own Mother. To have one of them call in with a girlfriend and when doing the introductions say that Grandma and Auntie had half brought her up was a bit embarrassing at the time. When we commented her reponse was "well it's true". They were usually already there when I got home from work, sometimes waiting for me at the front gate. I admit I never had children of my own, but I felt like they were mine most of the time. In actual fact when your grandson is with you, you are not fibbing when saying yes.

What about those who spend more time with grandchildren, nieces, nephews etc. than their parents do,,,then in their teens tell their friends that Grandma and Auntie........1/2 brought them up. They are probably better qualified to answer that section than many parents are.

Back in the 1960s you rarely did year 12 unless you wanted to go to uni or teachers college(as it was then). Basically it was not needed. Also the older you were the harder it was to gain employment as you had to be paid higher wages.....I received one today asking what insurance company you used for car insurance. The company we use for one of vehicles was not on the list.

I definitely don't get a sense of community from being on an on-line survey site. I generally find that there is little interaction amongst members anyway. I enjoy giving my unique opinion and also enjoy reading some of the responses from other community members. It often surprises me what people think and agree with, occasionally quite the opposite from my views and beliefs. But hey, that's what makes life interesting right?

I agree with you. In giving my opinion I like to be able to point out aspects of the product that could be improved. You can tell that some household, whitegoods appliances etc. are designed by men. One thing we had one such issue with was a fridge, a compartment which was badly located which rendered it almost impossible to use, yet it kept coming apart when you opened the door.

I sit somewhere in the middle. I am not naive enough to believe I can make a living from my survey panels - but it is a real kick when I get a gift card in the mail or a payout via paypal or my bank account, or get free movie tickets, free products or the like. But I also get a real kick when I see a product that I did a survey on actually make it onto the shelves - sometimes with changes *I* suggested (along with a million others, but it was my idea, too)! I also get a kick out of seeing products removed and rejigged according to surveys I completed. I do wonder sometimes if some of the surveys are simply there for a joke, and wonder what benefit they are - but I suppose they all have their place, and I wonder if my participation actually means anything.

I don't often contribute to discussions, because I don't feel there is much value in my opinion for the most part. I tend to have very different opinions than many of my peers, and I am repeatedly either flamed for having an opinion different to theirs or told I am just plain wrong. I used to contribute to other discussion forums a lot, but found my opinion wasn't worth jack, so nowadays I only contribute when I feel so strongly I can't keep my mouth shut - but I always expect to be flamed/shot down for it, so it's no longer a shock when it happens. It's a shame, because I do have an opinion, and I spend a lot of time researching different things to gain knowledge and an understanding - and I feel sad when what I say is immediately deemed incorrect or worthless. And yes, it happens more often than you'd think. I am not an unintelligent person, but I feel as though I am when my opinion is dismissed. I don't want to change anyone's mind, but nor am I prepared to change mine just because people don't agree with me!

Ziah, so sorry to hear of your situation re responses in chat forums, I am not big on chatting, (not that you would know from this forum, I think this is my 4th response. Not normal for me!!). I think perhaps you have been unlucky & been the target of very opinionated but ill educated people as your response here is enlightened & articulate; plus your opinions can not be that different as you say that you see products that you have changed "along with a million others". Hope these responses are the beginning of something new for you & you once again feel welcomed as a valued contributor to online forums.

I, like you love receiving free products to trial. If I like them I will consider buying some, and sometimes even switch brands. Some items, especially in food and health & beauty products ranges are expensive to buy - especially if you don't like them or they don't suit your skin. I don't mind if somebody disagrees with me as long as they aren't "nasty" in doing so. If they do, sometimes I will respond explaining my access to the information to back it up, especially if I have found the information via google.

In it for a combination of reasons. I would really love to believe that my opinions count and just hope that they are valued as I always give honest answers...even when the surveys aren't worded with a "none" option (so many seem to forget that none of the given answers might apply).
Also in it for the money. My time is valuable and so the money is the (small) reward for my time...win, win situation I guess? Having said my time is valuable, is probably the reason I don't spend that much time 'chatting' in forums...there's only so many hours in the day!
