WE NEED TO SPEAKUP ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF SUGAR IN OUR FOODS. e.g. I did write to Nestles of ask why we cannot have the ' unsweetened ' condensed milk back again, we used to be able to buy it years ago and always wondered why it was dearer than the sweetened one !! and their reply was ' all over the place ' -- " "you can buy the lite one,!! or the evaporated lite one etc etc " -- BUT we need the condensed one please for those beaut recipes, and we need to be able to add our own less sugar, or safe sugars for us diabetics. Over the last year or two, why have we seen so many ' specials ' on this item, obviously because it is not selling as well as it was, - too sweet !!! -- will they listen to us know ???

Alex, your ' cheat meal once a week' reminded me of my Grandmothers wisdom,=. - Sunday night was always tea at Grandmas, and there were lots of us....her cooking was delicious, always lovely cream cakes etc etc etc - but of course we had to eat the meats and 3 vegies first, then came the sweet treats. - but her wisdom was, ' always eat the healthy foods all week, and then look forward the sweet treats on Sunday and you will live'..... sugar most certainly is addictive... so as a family, we decided to go sugar6 free. this means that all packaged food is a no go, we only have fresly made food to ensure that we are not eating added sugar, and have natvia, it is a stevia when we have our weet bix, or use it as an alternative to icing sugar, when cooking cakes, muffins, biscuits. and because i am one of those people who are addicted to sugar, am finding it hard to adjust, but believe me, with the well- balanced diet and exercise, it is paying off.

I absolutely agree with this. Sugar is addictive and it's terribly difficult to understand that when we're being enabled by all the products out there. I've recently cut down my sugar intake dramatically. It was really hard at first. Once a week I allow myself a "cheat meal" & I can eat whatever I want. It gives me discipline but also something to look forward to each week. Now when I get to that meal I am simply incapable of consuming the amount of sugar I used to. If you have sugar cravings at night can I suggest a cup of black adder tea. It's made from licorice root and is naturally very sweet but with nothing bad in it. I don't want anything sweet after drinking it.

GREAT TO read all your responses, and your suggested ideas too, but ...... are there any manufacturers out there that can put some light on the use of sugar, ... and of salt in the products we buy ? There are so many natural sweeteners available now, and that is of great benefit, buy it seems a lot of folk still are not aware of these alternatives. For example, when baking, the use of sultanas or bananas are enough to sweeten some recipes, plus the use of spices too.
It is amazing how many recipes require 1 cup of sugar, when 1/2 cup is adequate in lots of recipes. --- Also, the amount of sugar in drinks is really scary.

I stopped using sugar in my tea and coffee years ago. Don't remember why but probably because I no longer liked the sweet taste. When I became used to going without sugar I stopped eating biscuits and sweets ... just didn't like the taste any more. Now, some ten years later my weight has dropped from 100kg to 70kg and I feel great. The only disadvantage is when I have to move something heavy and don't have the body weight to push as hard as I used to.

Sugar is addictive to many and that is why there is too much sugar in our foods. Sugar sells. If the food being sold is good for you and healthy but another less product line sells more then the healthier line is withdrawn. Take away the excess sugar and after a while you do not notice or get used to the lower sugar content.

YES WE SURE HAVE A 'HUGE' SUGAR PROBLEM. I REDUCED MY INTAKE BY 1/4 TEASPOON A DAY AND I REALLY DIDNT NOTICE THE CHANGE, BUT BENEFITED BY MY NEW SUGAR FREE INTAKE OF FOOD THEN DISCOVERED THAT IF I ATE e.g. ICING, I GOT BAD BREATH VERY SOON AFTER, - IS THAT INTERESTING ??
Now my new found low G.I. 'sugar' is -banaban virgin coconut oil sugar- -google that and read all about it, it is extremely interesting and it has all the comparisons of other sugars ETC-- AS WELL AS HOW IT IS MADE. and that is what we need to know..
----- while we are on this ' good health stuff ' -- SALT ---- it also is in everything, often for preservative reasons, and far too much. I use none in cooking and I make up my own table salt - to 1/2 cup salt add a mix of garlic powder, onion powder (not onion salt) white pepper and 1 tspn of cornflour (to help it not go lumpy) to make up the full cup. or you can make a more herby mixture if you prefer. so that you are only using half salt, if you really do need some. - got to have it on boiled egg or tomato though !!

A great alternative to table salt is a good quality sea or rock salt. They contains a myriad of naturally occuring minerals not just the sodium chloride which is what table salt is. As an added bonus it tastes even better than traditional table salt.

I am a sugar lover,no doubt but I have to accept that today's diets are very rich with sugar. It's definately very bad for general health by population. Just very good and strong promotion on the TV can help to recognise better a problem for high intake of sugar.

I Agree our food have way to much sugar in them and I would say that sugar is the cause of some many health problems. I detox my body of sugar which is really hard it really makes me feel ill for a few days, but then I just feel amazing if people can do this and stick to it they will see weight problems are reduced.
