Live animal export

After watching Latelines latest film of animal attrocities in Indonesian abbattoirs I find it difficult to understand how both political parties allow live animal export of our animals. I have nightmares about what I have seen. I have sent emails as directed by Animals Australia & RSPCA but have heard nothing back, obviously too busy worrying about themselves

It is a minority of these abbattoirs that are doing the wrong thing and they are the ones which Australia should refuse to send live animals too. We should only deal with the ones who treat these animals humanely, and there are abbattoirs over there that do.
The reason the animals get processed over there is because they have to sell the meat fresh as they have no where near the amount of refrigeration in that country that we do in one of our capital cities.
The government needs to step in and close down live export to the cruel abbattoirs and ensure that all live export goes to the humane abbattoirs.

I am LIVID to say the least. I'll be truthful to you, saying I'm not a vegan, but this makes me want to be. I've seen a picture of a cow, and underneath it read,
I AM NOT SOMETHING, I AM SOMEBODY. Then I saw the picture of little lambs
desperately trying to jump a fence to get back to their mothers. My full name is Carolyn Howarde, and if you're on facebook, go to my wall, and see everything that is being done (to no avail it seems). There's not enough of us.

I totally agree with your thoughts on Live Animal export. However I do disagree with one thing. YOu said Animals Australia and RSPCA have not returned your emails, 'obviously too busy worrying about themselves'.

They are not worrying about themselves, they, in particular Animals Australia, doing everything they can to stop Live Animal Export. They are the people who witnessed these atrocities in Indonesian abattoirs, and what do you think they have dreams of? They are working for the animals, so give them a break when you do't hear anything. Whenever I have signed a petition for either one, I have received an email thanking me. Yes, its automated, however, thats all I need. I would rather they put their skills to use to stop Live Animal Export.

Change does not come easy. The government and opposition are beholden to entrenched business interests and it will be a long struggle to end live export but we are making some headway. With 75-80% of Aussies against live exports the pollies can only hold on so long. Eventually public opinion will prevail but we must persevere with the fight and keep up the pressure.. Please don't be disappointed. The more the government and live export industry resist the more pressure we can apply. We can learn from the situation in New Zealand. It finally banned live exports and now only exports chilled meat.

Don't give up, we have to fight this,we don't want any animals suffering anymore than they have too. Personally I choose to be a Vegan and encourage others to lead a clean life, keep signing the petitions, join Care.org and The Petition site,we need to keep the pressure on well after the media frenzy dies down. The animals are still suffering.Live export is unnecessary for our country to earn money.I am always disgusted when any animal is being transported, take a look at the trucks you see on the highways how crammed in they are,and think about those long voyages on the ships, they die and get thrown to the the sharks, those unlucky to survive have to suffer longer before they are killed inhumanely.Would you do this to eat meat? Why let others do the dirty work for you - if you can't kill it yourself you shouldn't eat it - thats how I became a vego - i find it hard to kill a bug!

Animals are packed into trucks for their own safety. It prevents them being injured when the truck corners, accelerates etc. I have traveled in the back with cattle being transported to shows. Even with the best of drivers there is still quite a shift of weight that the animals must cope with. A fall in the back of a truck can be fatal for large animals.

I would always pack my pedigree show cattle fairly tight in pens as they travelled better & arrived in better condition.

I do not agree with shipping live animals overseas for slaughter. That should be done locally, providing work for locals in this time of economic uncertainty & unemployement. It is also far more humane & they are killed in a humane way.

Stressed animals do not provide good quality meat so Farmers & meat works work to avoid stress on the animals prior to slaughter

Hi Eugenie, I also get very upset about the live export of animals. I know people think I am a sook but I do cry when I see things like the way animals are treated. I have seen something as cruel that we do with new born calves in Australia. I actually cried myself to sleep to think that we do things like what was shown on the 7pm Report show on Capital. I started a petition on one of the Petition sites but nothing has come of it. I dont know why the human race think that animals have no feelings or pain. I hope I don't sound like a screwball but cruelty to animals is my pet hate.

I can understand your distress eugenie, such mistreatment, unfortunately, happens. i ithink most australians would agree that it needs to change. that means that if a political party had a policy that proposed a stop to export of live animals to such countries that had those barbaric methods, they would do quite well at the poles! Lets all put some STRONG positive thought in that direction. If enough people combine to do that, we may see a difference.amazing what the power of positive thinking can do. thanks for bringing the subject to this forum. lets hope lots of cafe members keep the thread going for a long, long time.cheers.simla
