What gets your goat?

Is it bad manners? Noisy (or nosey) neighbours? Crude dress? Expensive groceries? Rainy days? I know this isn't an overly positive toipc, but as is life, we're only human and sometimes things just tick us off...

Incorrect spelling and punctuation- I know some people think it is OK in texting but it shows abysmal ignorance and a lack of regard for other people. I am not referring to accidental typo errors in posts or messages but to advertise your ignorance this way.... I also see such things on commercial banners and signs. The worst, of course, is when I get a job application submitted in Word in which the misuse and and incorrect spelling items are underlined in red and blue, and the person has not even considered correcting the errors- in an application for an administrative position!

why do we have to generalise. There are good and bad drivers on the road. We all need to be a bit more patient.

A very late post that is off-topic and may very well not be seen but I feel compelled to proceed anyway.......

Rainbow,

My compliments to you on your new profile picture (or should I call it your avatar). You have selected a wonderful photograph that seems to have been taken un-posed and catching you in a very natural situation. In my opinion this photograph far surpasses the one that it replaces primarily because it shows off your beautiful smile so very well.

P.S. What gets my goat is the fact that sometimes I let things get my goat! Life is too short to waste time on letting anything get the better of your emotions in that way.

Inconsiderate noisy neighbors sub woofers, loud cars and music from passing cars we do not need to be annoyed by.
Speeding drivers that come so close to the rear of your car you can't read the licence plate.
Queue jumpers where queueing is not defined by ropes and barriers.
Cars that park on the footpath or crossover so pedestrians have to go on the road to pass.
School kids that seem to think walking on the road and not the foot path is cool.
Groceries/ petrol prices/ that are now controlled by large corporations.
Increasing energy costs for electricity gas etc.
Solar power users discriminated against and pay 3 times more than normal users.
Have u got another 3 months? I will need that long to type how so many of us are being hard done by and nobody cares.

Vicious gossip about boat people. Why can't they be treated in the same way as the postWW2 refugees? They were put on contract to the govt for 2 years and sent to wherever workers were needed and if they met the conditions were then free to stay. They contributed to the work force and were self sufficient.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT; would you get on a leaky boat with your family, travel to a foreign country where you were unwelcome and didn't speak the language or understand the culture, in danger from pirates on the trip, arrive to be jailed without trial for an unspecified period IF THERE WAS NO VALID REASON?

Rudeness. Disrespect. Bigotry...particularly religious and ethnic bigotry. Sometimes it's out of ignorance but it needs to be challenged every time. Classism does exist too. Why must we breed hate?

Advertising prices as (eg.) $5.99! We all know it's really $6.00 so why can't shops, petrol stations etc. get real and quit trying to lull us into a false sense of, "Gee that's cheap". Petrol @ $2.19.9! Everyone knows that's really $2.20!

The main thing would be - so called health professionals like the Doctors who know nothing about health and only seem to know about poisons and disease.

Drugs that are considered safe in moderation - big conspiracy there. There's a cumulative effect of toxins.
And there's far too many in the food-air water soil. even your body produces them - why would anyone want to take more poisons deliberately esp. in the name of health.

I say: you can't get health from poison - and anyone who pushes poisons on others in the name of Health should be charged and gaoled. Starting with the Doctors and drug company execs.

Hippocrates, a medical herbalist, would be rolling in his grave if he knew the poison pushing quacks had hijacked his name for their profiteering.

How bout that?! :)

I come from the UK. I don't come from England, although I have what most people regard as an "English" accent because I went to a private school in Scotland. I get really, REALLY fed up by being told I'm English, I'm a whingeing Pom and (on one unforgettable occasion) of being asked why I couldn't find a nice Englishman to marry because Australian women needed all the Australian men .... It's actually quite racist when you're exposed to it every day, and after having lived here for 12 years I'm really tired of it.

What annoys me is the truck drivers that indicate and then just turn in front of you when they know you are about to pass them and then sit in the right lane trying to pass the car in front of them knowing it won't happen for about 2 to 3 k because they can't get enough steam up to get around them. All they do is slow down traffic. I can't wait for the Vic Government to get off thier butts and ban trucks using the right lane on all major hi-ways especially the ring road in Melbourne. As for the drivers that curse at you because your are following the road rules just smile and say to yourself have a great day mate as they are headed for disaster.

I tend to get frustrated with cat owners who think their "moggy" does not hunt or use everyone's garden as a toilet and dog owners who let their dog out to do their toilet on some other nature strip, or front yard instead of their own. I am well aware that there are some very responsible pet owners out their, but those that are not are very annoying. I would never take my dog out without a couple of suitable bags in my pocket, just in case.

I hate that as im getting older im getting treated disrespectfully by teenage boys and young men. Not a lot but enough to make me realize i have to take it because if i say something it'll just make it worse. i think to myself, obviousley this is just something that happens to everyone around my age, all my friends tell me it happens to them to. And i spose one day it will happen to the young men when they catch up to my age.....which they will. its something we all have in common, aging. im just happy i brought my 20 yr old son up to respect his older generation. It made me so happy when one day i saw him sitting inside dominos waiting for his pizza chatting away to an elderly lady, and he was laughing and so was she. Nice one son!

What really gets my goat is when you lend money to family members and they promise to pay it back to you by a certain date and they don't. Then if you ask them nicely when they might be able to pay you back, they make up a sob story or get angry at you for asking!!??!!

Poor & rude customer service assistance! They're supposed to be there to assist people and not give them a hard time! That's why they're called customer service! Sometimes, because they don't know their job well enough, they make up rules! Almost all of the time, you are speaking to someone half a world away with a strange accent and who isn't able to make a decision and after waiting & describing the situation over the phone for the last hour, you still need to get a supervisor to call you back!! The call back may or may not happen! If you do get a call back, then you repeat the whole story again, only to be told they can't help you!!! Is that frustrating or what!!!!

The Goverments persistence on introducing a Carbon Tax, even though the world is slipping into a Mini Ice Age.

don't know about the ice age, but what we should of had was the mining tax that everyone moaned about, we wouldn't need the carbon tax then. People didn't understand that it was a tax on the mining companies super profits not on miners themselves which I am one. So we let the mining giants take 90%+ out of the country for digging up our land.

1) People not knowing road rules example; At a roundabout you give way to cars in the roundabout which in turn means the order in which you arrive, you DO NOT have to give away to cars on your right rule at roundabouts but your forced to to save an accident as they just keep coming..
2) People who SPEED you will be doing the speed limit and their either racing past or sitting right up your bumper forcing you along,I know a lot of people don't agree saying you should keep left if traffic is flowing (at the speed limit) and I'm in the right lane don't sit up my a#@e I'm doing nothing wrong..Again learn your road rules you only need to keep to the left if traveling at more than 80klms ...Abusive people /road rage persons have no place on the road they have a mental issue and need help....Steve Professional Driver/ Driving 55 hours per week in a heavy vehicle,I see a lot of crap these are my 3 main hates..

The P platers are getting a hammering but like any part of the motoring public there are good and bad P platers. Trouble is the bad ones get noticed more. P platers should be restricted to a 4 cylinder, maximum 1500cc car. Instead I see so many driving cars too powerful for their level of expertise. All new drivers should be made to attend a driving school instead of learning bad habits from their parents because not all of them are good drivers either. A simple thing such as holding the steering wheel in the ideal position of 10am & 2pm (on an analogue clock face) gives you better control of the car in the event of a tyre blow out for example, yet I see so many drivers cruising along, 1 hand on the wheel and it's often the left hand but for some reason holding the wheel on the right. The other annoying thing are the use of merging lanes. A lot won't merge when there is plenty of time to do so, they insist on driving right up to the end of the merging lane and just have to get in front of that other car at all costs.

Tailgaters, Can't stand them. I go slower, eventually most of them back off when they realise what I'm doing. If they don't, well, I've got all day.
People that don't return your smile or greeting.

What gets my goat is when people irresponsibly park illegally preventing other cars from moving. I parked (legally) in between two other cars and some thoughtless imbecile illegally parked opposite, effectively blocking both myself and the car in front of me from getting out. So...the immature bimbo who owns the car in front of me gouges with a key across my bonnet " I hate your car". At least $1000 worth of damage and I have done nothing wrong! I feel like letting all her tyres down and gouging every panel in her car, but that would just make me as stupid, uncaring, irresponsible and apathetic as her. How dare people violate my property in a moment of vengeful rage! I AM SO ANGRY

I find that tailgaters also annoy me, especially when I am already going at the speed limit, and in the past I have reacted badly. I think that some people either are impatient or think that everyone should get out of their way. Now I find that by slowing down to about 10km/hr slower than the speed limit, it makes the situation a bit safer and makes it a bit easier for them to pass. Once they are past me, they are gone forever out of my life and don't worry me any longer. Who knows, they might just get caught in a radar trap just up the road.

  • 18th Feb 2012 06:51pm

what gets my goat? well sadly I have a few 'goats' to be got upon.
Firstly, Harvey Norman ads on commercial tv. The loud, hectoring voice at maximum decibels even when the volume is turned down really gets my goat. Then, barking dogs which owners ignore or leave tied up to serenade (not) the captive audience of the neighbours. Then, P platers who sneer at me with thinly veiled contempt as I drive at the speed limit. They look at me with pity as they speed off at least 10km above the limit whilst talking on their mobile phones - pink frangipani decal stickers and all.
Then, mothers who allow their small offspring to wail loudly in cafes, spoiling the atmosphere for others. If kids are tired and scratchy, take them home to bed and get them in a routine. They are not an accessory to be toted everywhere.
There, phew
I probably get on lots of people's goats.

A stepson who has just come to live with us. We have been giving him chance after chance about his lying, but time after time he continually lies & today we discovered that he has taken items out of this house that don't belong to him without asking for the weekend. I don't mind if he asked if he could take these items with him on the weekend. I asked him if everything in his bag belonged to him & his reply was "yes. I'm taking this & that (items mentioned) not about the extra items. As far as I am concerned this is stealing & if these items are not returned to this house when he returns, well he will be punished for stealing. He has broken any trust that he has earned in the last 3 weeks, therefore his bag will be checked on a regular basis's from now on.

There are lots of things ranging from stores and cafes that pretend to provide service to people ,to people who live in NSW and Qld complaining that they didn't vote for Gillard as PM, to people who read something in a tabloid or hear a shock jocks latest drivel and take it as the truth.

I wonder whether the response to the headlines about 'Boatfuls of electronics and other equipment for boat people" and the outrage about this and just how it compares to the deafening silence that followed when all the evidence demonstrates that these headline were not true.

Perhaps these dullards who take the account of The Telegraph and the shock jocks as true may have passed their driving test but maybe they need to pass an intelligence test before we allow them to vote.
After all with a car they can kill just a few people but with a vote they can ruin a country!

He had the cheek to tell me this week that I watched too much television, this from someone who has been out 5 nights this week - three to train for sport, one for dinner with friends (I stayed home and cooked tea for the kids and myself and cleaned the house after working all day) and once to attend a sporting event. As I write this he is actually out this afternoon playing cricket.. I have done three loads of washing and hung out the five loads that I could not hang out because I was at work/ it was too wet over the last two days. I also cooked lunch for him while he spent the morning on his computer/watching TV in his dressing gown.

End of rant - thank you for giving me the opportunity to vent.... I am ticked off. It was actually my birthday when he made the comment about my TV viewing. He did give me a present but also had a new TV delivered for his personal use. His new TV cost more than my present!!

My daughter had a husband like petag and you HMH. He eventually left her and went off with another woman because my daughter "was so lazy". Not only has she three kids, a part time job, does lots of loads of washing, all the household cleaning, cooks the meals, does the dishes, runs the kids to sport on the week-end and training during the week and much much more. If she dared to sit down to have a coffee or watch a bit of TV (if she ever has time) then he complained that she is lazy.

I have three things that get my goat but lets start at number one.

1) My neighbour's car alarm goes off day and night with a beeping sound for a few minutes each time which is rather annoying especially during the middle of the night. No point saying anything to him because of his violent nature.

2) Rude passengers on public transport having their feet on seats, swearing and speaking loudly as if they weren't close enough to the person, also while on mobile phones. Rather annoying!!!

3) Groceries decreased in size but not in price. What a rip off!

Cars with loud subwoofers that drive up the streets at 2am or anytime who think everyone needs to hear their music and make our houses shake.
Neighbors that do the same .. I do not want to listen to my neighbors music at anytime of the day or night.
Unregistered and uninsured and unlicenced drivers that think they can do what they want such as all aspects of hoon activities and drugged drunk driving and killing and maiming innocents.
A government that makes it harder for its citizens to live, no controls on prices on almost anything. Big companied driving up fuel and food prices and killing off our farmers like Coles and Woolworths etc.
Telcos that upgrade your account because they decide you are on an old package and do not tell you is you have an interstate call it will cost you 80 cents a minite instead of 1.50 for 3 hours and make false statements about accounts for older people that are actually 10 times more than normal account charges.
I could go on for another 2000 words but I think you will get the meaning of this post.

Any driver that damage my car in the car park! I am so annoyed by all those drivers that just don't care when parking, reversing and damage your car and then just disappear. I have so many marks on my car plus a big dent that must've been from an unskillful reversing technique. I am always careful when parking and I intentionally avoid parking next to big cars or in small spaces.

I agree with you blueyes. I was returning to my vehicle one day when a woman backed into it and dented it.. She looked as if she was going to drive off even though she must have felt the bump. When she saw me looking at the dent she did have the decency to get out and talk to me. We came to an agreement that I would get a quote on how much it would cost to repair the dent and she would pay me herself. She did not want to go through insurance. Yes, she did pay the quoted price. After-all, I had her registration number and name and address and it was in a country town where we both lived at that time.

However, like you I have other dents - mainly from doors slamming into my car at supermarket car parks. I also have many scratches possibly from supermarket trolleys.

I don't like rude people either bub. It always gets on my goat when a mother slowly strolls through a supermarket or shopping mall completely ignoring the fact that their newborn (although I have to guess by the pitch of the cry as the pram is usually shrouded with a shade cloth) is screaming their head off in their pram. I just feel so sorry for the baby and want to slap the mother to wake them up from their apparent daydream and tell them to tend to their poor child.

What gets my goat? Rude people who phone. Someone with an Indian sounding voice phoned asking to speak to my husband. As I know my husband is not fond of telemarketers, I politely asked who she was and what she wanted. She told me she was Stephanie and then babbled off some ?telecommunion name (or that's what it sounded like). I politely asked her would she mind saying that again. She asked me if I could not understand her and I said "yes" so she told me I was a stupid bitch and hang up. I can understand that telemarketers must get frustrated sometimes as people are often rude to them but there is no call for them to be rude to ?potential customers, especially when I spoke politely and patiently.

Yes, i've had some of these too. And they tend to call after hours - even past 10PM. I answer the phone by telling them the time. eg. Hello it's 9:30 PM how can I help? that usually makes them take a step back from their marketing spiels. and get into apologetic tones.

Some of the calls - not only can't you understand them, but their voip type connection is so bad half of what they say isn't even audible. :(

Definately the politicians. Our politicians and governments have no idea. They're getting paid bucketloads and they cannot solve ONE problem, instead they continue to create them. They're selfish and completely oblivious to the normal Australian person and their struggles. I cannot believe taxpayers pay them to have their question times or whatever they're called, when they all sit together and act like 5 year olds in a school playground, honestly I find them so unappealing and embarassing!!!

I agree. Newspapers, Magazines should set a good example. There may be children and adults (e.g. could be learning English as a second language) finding it hard enough to learn what is correct without coming across mistakes. Don't they have proof readers anymore? Ads are a bit different when it comes to spelling brand names e.g weet bix instead of wheat biscuit.

(I think it was) Oprah Winfrey said "when you know better, you do better". I try not to let myself be annoyed about anything or anyone, because you can't do what you don't know. "Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do" pretty much sums it up. If there's something I can do to make anything or anyone better, I do: and if there isn't, then "live and let live" applies. Certainly my being annoyed, angry, upset, etc. isn't going to change the situation.

Unfortunately there are quite a few things that irritate me, some big, some small. Many do involve driving such as being cut off, people not indicating and so on. Some involve pedestrians many of whom appear to think that a car cannot hurt them. If I had a dollar for everyone person who walked behind my car at the supermarket while I am in the middle of reversing out of a parking spot, then I would be extremely wealthy.

although I never really act on my feelings anything relating to bad manners is annoying such as the people who think its ok to leave their rubbish all over the place. Just because someone will clean it up eventually doesn't make it right for you to be a selfish slob.

People who assume (and won't be persuaded otherwise) that good health means being thin. I have been healthy, vitally fit and active all my life and yet judged by the fashion of the day and, more dangerously, by health professionals, to be obese and therefore unhealthy.
I have excellent BP, cholesterol, blood sugar levels and a sparkle that gets me going into my days with enthusiasm and contentment.

These people seem never to have heard of Health at Any Size, a world-wide movement which showed just how dangerous and unhealthy dieting is was and ever will be. They seemed determined to fly in the face of evidence to the contrary and declare me unhealthy!!
Fortunately I am strong minded enough to ignore their idiocy but how many people eating goof, fresh foods and getting exercise, still believe this ridiculous propaganda?
How many thin people assume they're healthy simply because they conform to the specious BMI (which Harvard scholars never devised or intended to apply to individuals - another idiocy we've adopted) even though they may have an unhealthy lifestyle?

Many fat people are extremely healthy and I am heartily SICK of the empty-headed fashionistas who say otherwise.

Hi Rainbow,
I totally know what you mean about when other people are having a rant or something and you start to get angry for "no reason". A tool I learnt recently that has changed all this for me and I thought I would share with you is "Who does this belong to?". There is a great youtube vid that explains it here "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3_3a1kG-ZY" but in essence when you ask that question if it lightens up or goes away its not yours so you then can choose to have that or not from choice rather than picking it up in other peoples spaces and buying it as yours. This tool can be used for every thought feeling or emotion you have/percieve.
Hope this gives you more choice next time. For more cool tools check out the free stuff page on AccessYou.co.nz

Yes, there is also the case that - making paper bags causes more pollution than plastic bags.
The key to using plastic bags (and any other non-deteriorating items) is to dispose of them responsibly.

Two things:

1. Tailgaters. That's been covered already. I don't speed, but I do usually stick as close to the speed limit as I can. I reduce my speed in wet conditions or in poor visibility. I don't understand tailgating. After all, it's the speed LIMIT, not the speed minimum! And the closer you are to my tail, the closer you are to having an accident that's your fault. If I have to slow down or stop suddenly to avoid a hazard, you WILL hit me, no matter how good a driver you are. Basic biology in reflex time, and physics in car-stopping time will see to that. Every tailgater risks being the cause of deaths, injuries in addition to insurance hassles.

2. Plane travelers who show their annoyance at children on flight. Before I had children, I was a frequent traveller; domestic and international. I would sigh a little if I was seated near very young children, knowing that they cry (my mother ran a daycare at home) but I wouldn't complain and I'd be nice to the parents because children are an integral part of society. Now that I have two small children, I travel less frequently. When I do travel with the children, I make sure to have plenty of snacks, drinks, a favourite toy and some new novelties to keep them as happy as possible. My children have boundaries and discipline in their lives and are generally good kids. But they're still *children.* On one flight, my then just-turned-2yo was wailing. We tried frantically to calm him, to no avail. The seatbelt sign was still on for take-off, and he pooped. My heart sank. There was a "gentleman" a few rows ahead that made a point of turning around and GLARING at us, as if to say, "control your horrid screaming brat." We were trying, I tell you. As soon as the seat belt light turned off, I changed him, but he was still crying. We'd purchased a seat for him, and had him strapped into his car seat on that seat (as recommended). But in the end I took him out and held him as he cried. This calmed him a bit and he fell asleep. He woke up 20 minutes later SCREECHING (that gentleman again gave us a death stare) and then vomited all over himself and me. Oh. Turns out he'd gotten the same stomach bug I'd had the day earlier (I vomited so much it left me too weak to walk) and that I'd thought was food poisoning from dodgy Chinese. My son hadn't eaten the food, so it's only then we found out it was something else. Poor little guy. Poor me. I had to take him to the tiny bathroom, remove his clothes, wash him down, put a change of clothes on, hand him to my husband (who was also dealing with our infant) and then remove my dress, try to wash it in the tiny sink with the hand soap, wring it out and put it back on, still wet and smelling of vomit.
A little while later, our toddler boy had diarrhea. Oh my gosh. Nightmare. Another change of clothes.

The point being, children are not able to express themselves as well as adults. They don't have the vocabulary or emotional maturity. My son was wailing because he felt terrible and had no words to put to it. We were doing our best to soothe him. A little understanding would have been appropriate.

Another time, my little (almost 2yo) son was kicking his legs against the seat in front of him. Usually, I wouldn't allow it, but the seat in front of him was empty, so I let it go. (Pick your battles, right?) The lady on the other seat in front turned around and gave us what-for, accusing my son of kicking her seat and telling us to control him. I responded that he was *NOT* kicking her seat as could clearly be seen by the fact he wasn't seated behind her. It did make me realize that because the seats are connected though, his kicks of the seat next to her were vibrating into her seat. Of course, as soon as I figured this out I prevented him from kicking. But the thing is, she'd waited until she was livid to say anything. And then accused my son of doing something he clearly couldn't have been doing. Children cry (loudly) when upset, and are boisterous and ever-moving. We were all kids once, and for most cultures in most points of time (I'm an anthropologist), children are considered a normal part of social life. I fear for modern society because have fewer children and relegate them to the home or special designed-for-kids activities. In the past, kids were just a part of normal life and would go where their parents/grandparents/uncles/aunts/cousins went, and everyone just dealt with it.

But back to the plane thing; a plane is *PUBLIC TRANSPORT*. It's just a flying bus with more expensive tickets. You expect to deal with the whole world of society on a bus, including the elderly, the disabled, and children, young families. The same goes on the plane. Children belong in the public sphere. If you want a little adult-only bubble while travelling on public transport like buses, ferries, trains and planes, I suggest you charter a trip.

As with most people, it is tailgaters, P-platers who think they can drive better than those who have been driving for 30 years. But my biggest problem lately is the lack of manners. Not just in the younger generation, but I have noticed that even a lot of those in the 60-70 age group seem to have stopped using "please, excuse me and thank you". I hate to think what this country will be like in 20-30 years if there are no manners being used anymore and rudeness rules.

Some small minded politician on the news this morning stating that it was necessary to give boat people a $10000 house package including fridge (yes) microwave and ipod as part of the basic necessities of life. Hello since when was an ipod a necessity. I don't mind people being given the bare minimum but when i think of our pensioners who often have to go without the basics due to lack of funds that we should be screening what is given out as NECESSARY

Cant decide between people who stop in the middle of the supermarket aisle with thier trolley sideways so you can't get past or when you go for a meal where you are happy to pay for quality food and receive overcooked/dried out revolting dishes and staff/management don't follow through with your feedback........but I suppose they lose in the long run because they just lost (another) customer

At the moment - my landlord! An owner inspection is only supposed to happen once a year but this one wants to come to all of them! She also said that we wouldn't have to vacate at the end of our lease but we are due out Easter Saturday! Well, once good thing about it, by vacating, we won't have to put up with her anymore. On a downside, we don't have the money to move.

Another thing that gets me is people driving significantly below the speed limit - doing 30 in a 60 or 70 zone.

Yep, you can out crude dress in there too. A young lady is so much more attractive to the right sort of people if she dresses with some modesty. Also, wearing offensive language on clothes is so unnecessary.

Trail bike riders that are driving illegally when we are trying to sleep.

Garbage trucks coming before 7 am.

The price of fuel

Media that recycle to death old topics without much, if anything new to say or not covering them in more depth. Most of the time, the story tells you next to nothing. Good journalism seems rare these days.

People who park in disabled spots who don't have a permit and people who think you don't have a disability unless you are in a wheelchair.

The unhealthy way food is made when there are good alternatives available.

The expense of gluten free foods which is unnecessarily inflated.

Drivers that cut you off and pedestrians that just step out in front of you.

Things not being made to last.

My frustration has nothing to do with driving, its the major duopoly or Coles and Woolworths adversarial adds and the fact that they get away with misleading statements. Then when I look at their adds and items on special what do we get? discounts on high sugr / fat products and items that are not meant to be part of a healthy lifestyle. Specials and reductions on Soft drinks and lollies, chocolate and biscuits do not help customers who have limited income and are trying to maintain a balance diet. There are so many stories and government adds about the obesity crisis and people being overweight, but the price of a balanced diet is costing the earth. Perhaps if the big supermarkets were to offer true discounts on key healthy ingredient more people would eat a balance diet.

Hi ians,
If you have a slow Internet connection try getting a faster broadband (contact Westnet.com.au , which I recommend for their efficient, fast and always friendly service). - Also sometimes, there is a build-up of Internet traffic which can slow connections down considerably.
As to annoying ads, simply record the TV show you want to watch and then flip over the ads.
In regard to noisy, foul mouth neigbors see my tips a few pages backwards.

When I am in a queue and someone just pushes in that really makes me mad.

also the other day at the supermarket the male of the family was at the checkout and putting the food through (15 items) then the rest of the family (3 of them 4 items each) were still shopping. Looked like they had 15 items to start with then the rest of them arrived. Yep you gessed it I had to wait for the last one to arrive with an extra 10 items. I could have gone through the other checkouts but nooo I was polite and took it up the bum as usual. I now avoid those people and yes I was annoyed. I consider that really rude

Stupidity pisses me off. People complaining about boat people (which account for less than 1% of all illegals), speeding idiot drivers (risking everybody's lives for the sake of a few minutes), people complaining about interest rates while they busily live out their lives on credit, people actually believing wars are fought over anything else other than oil or money, and the list goes on. And unfortunately stupid people also seem to be the most vocal and listened to. People should really take time to research their point of view, rather than be swayed by the likes ACA, Today Tonight or Andrew Bolt.

What gets my goat is people who throw their rubbish down on the ground as if they think it's their right to do so! Even when there are rubbish bins around such as a few yards away from a seat they have been sitting on, they just leave their rubbish on or under the seat! Too far for them to walk to.

My suburb is littered with rubbish of all kinds. Glass beer bottles, cans, paper rubbush, fast food rubbish. I pick up bottles and cans from around the outside of the Seniors' complex I live in, and take them to my recycle bin, or if I'm on my way to or back from the shops and recycle bins are out for collection, I'll pick bottles up along the way and put them into the bins, as glass is one thing I don't like to leave lying around.

If everyone did their bit like this, it would help, but if the culprits didn't do it in the first place, it would be even better. A lot of people don't pick other people's rubbish up because they just think that they didn't put it there, so why should they, but I really don't like to see it, and do care, so I do pick it up.

I don't know why people don't want to feel proud of their city and keep it free of rubbish. The council are just as bad, as I've emailed about it a few times, but rarely is anything done! There is a 'kerb-side pick-up' coming around soon, but whenever there is one, our road seems to get missed, so they can't be going all around the suburb - just being selective!

Rubbish gets thrown into the shrubbery on the outside of our complex or gets blown there by the wind, and people also throw things out of their cars onto the nature strips as they go past. I and a couple of other residents used to pick this up regularly, but we got tired of it,and it got to be too much rubbish at one point.

I just pick up the bottles and cans now and take them back to my bin. Council did it once when I emailed, but nothing regularly, so don't know whose responsibility it is, unless it's the Housing people that own the complex.

I know the feeling when it comes to noise, drinking to access and argueing in the street after 3.a.m. in the morning. Lighting fireworks and throwing them in surrounding streets - they are illegal in SA. Climbing up and jumping up and down on their iron verandah and carport roofs - the noise - and probably damage - it is a rental property. Throwing and smashing bottles on the footpaths and roads - not just on one street either. Running around the block damaging letterboxes and taking peoples potplants (big ones) and tossing them in a reserve. The Police had a busy night keeping up with them that night. I didn't bother to call them, other neighbours must have because they apparently came 4 times. There were so many people there for the size of the property that the Police made some leave. Trouble was some of them came back. One driver waited until the Police had been gone for a few minutes then went hoon driving. The last time 4 police cars came and some were charged for various offences including cars in an adjoining street being broken into. They matched the fingerprints. I don't mind any body having a party if they don't get too drunk and disturb the neighbours and nearby street residents.

Try being a passenger in a long truck (not a semi), on a main road- a long gap behind you, nothing coming from the other way and a car comes out of the sidestreet in front of you , forcing the driver to slam the brakes on, not have time to clutch and change gear, and miss the vehicle by maybe 5cm and the other driver didn't even take any notice at the screech of tyres behind him. Like the truck driver said, the guy didn't want his what appeared to be a brand new car (new model and colour) to last too long. Sitting "up high" in a vehicle from which you can see a long way ahead you wonder how there isn't a lot more accidents than there is. You can't stop a truck or a vehicle towing a caravan/trailer on 3pence as the saying goes. Some truck drivers are "cowboys" as labelled by some of the others, but not all are. Some will pull over on country roads and signal other vehicles to pass if it is safe. Some will also move a little closer to the middle line if they know it is not safe. Drivers in a high wheeled vehicle can see further ahead than one in a car. They need to respect each other. "It works both ways". Another of my gripes is cyclists who ride 3 - 5 abreast and make no attempt to indicate when they want to change lanes. Some sneak up between lanes of cars at traffic lights then wonder why there are accidents. The lanes are vehicle width not vehicle and bike width. I myself am a cyclist but I take no risks and always err on the side of caution. My gripe is when even if you are riding almost in the gutter on a wide unmarked road a vehicle will pass so close to you that you can feel the breeze created by them. If it is a long truck you can feel as though you are being "sucked" by them.

I try to be courteous in these situations but some people are just plain rude, which is really unnecessary. You obviously use your four wheel drive for what it is intended - 4x4ing, camping etc. as well as around the city and can drive. You go girl, I'm all for girl power it's just all my encounters have been negative ones and there has been 100's possible 1000's. Let's see...... I get really annoyed with people who have no respect for others and law enforcement. Why we ask? It all started way back in the 1970's when they took discipline out of schools and abolished corporal and capital punishment. The results we are seeing now with murders, muggings, home invasions, burglary, assaults, stabbings all with little or no punishment. We have a big percentage of people that can't read and write and those that can don't know how to spell. Perhaps somebody can find a solution to these problems?
Discipline back into the home and schools perhaps? Corporal and capital punishment re-introduced to provide a deterent? I wonder what others think?

What gets my goat is people that don't know how to use their car's indicators. And then if they use them, they do it after I've pulled up behind them at the traffic lights. So now I have to sit and wait for them to turn before I can move. If I'd known they were turning earlier, I would have gone into the other lane.

Parents who won't control their children in public places (such as shops) or in private property (such as my shed!!). I really feel my blood pressure go up when parents let their kids harass others and play with merchandise in shops. It's not that hard to rein them in - for example, my married daughter had a rule for her kids "This is a hands-in-pockets place". If the kids tried pushing the boundaries, they were taken outside and told that their behaviour had led to them being taken away from the things they were interested in. Sometimes the kids would ask me politely "Pa, can I have a look at such and such?" in my shed, and it was a delight to pick it up and offer it to them for inspection - knowing they would respect it.
My wife and I found that the only cure for friends' kids who kept transgressing the boundaries at our place was to stop inviting them around.

Hi Rainbow,

Well, noisy, inconsiderate neighbors can certainly get my goat !
I lived between three of them in a units complex! And despite my repeated talking to them to tone it down, they just kept on playing that always too loud thumping rock music.
One day, all three of them played at once and I could hardly hear myself think.
Then an odd thing happened.
I was COMPELLED to cross my arms over my chest and started to chant in a deep, guttural voice while swaying back and forth toward the noise makers. What happened next surely surprised me!
Within two days, two of those irritating neighbors moved out and the third never played music again!!!
Weird or What ! Coincident ?
Who knows, but it has been quiet and peacefull since then!

Very good, but remember the key is consistency , strenght and intensity (desire) of your wish.
However, since everything is connected (on a higher level) and nothing happens by chance, there may be a (higher) reason why you live next to such
an annoying neighbor.
Nevertheless, all the best in chasing him away!

Well Raska, some say the power of positive thinking works.
That's where the idea of prayers also has its origin. Consider the Stigmata phenomena, it is simply produced by a concentrated thought process by believers who wish to suffer the same as Jesus. They bleed from the palm of their hands as has been depicted in all the painting and pictures of Jesus.
However, - the 'efficient' Romans drove the nails through the wrists not the palm of their crucified victims.
Which proves that focused thoughts can affect and change the body, and possibly many more things we are as yet not aware of.
So try 'wishing' your screaming neighbors away with constant and concentrated wishes.

Hi Windy,
What you say is fine, if you talk about 'normal' noise, like kids or toddlers playing outside or reasonable volume playing music. However decreasing ones pain depression by increasing the pain of others with excruciating loud noise is, I think, is not the way to go.

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, in a word tailgating.
My response ( and I dont recommned this to anyone but myself ) is to just gradually take my foot of the throttle little by little and slow down ever so gradually.
I had a driver tailgate me so closely some time ago that I had to come to a complete stop in the centre lane of a 3 lane road for him to get the message.
I enjoyed taking the control away from this driver and aggravating him into the bargain.
I know its not the right thing but..................
In other situations where drivers will spew forth abuse for apparently no reason, my reply is to laugh at them

Hi Stratman,
Slowing down may be a fun and working strategy, but if you ever come across a real moron or a young testerone driven macho twit, you may take your life (and his) into your hands,...

Hartmut, I totally agree with you.

However, many years ago on my way back from work (I lived in a country town and travelled to another town for work) I was tailgated by an idiot on a windy narrow bitumen road at 11 pm at night. A friend passed me going the other way and informed me later that the driver was almost touching the back of my vehicle. There was nowhere for the idiot to pass and I was travelling as fast as was safe on that road. What I did is probably not legal but I put my two side wheels off the bitumen onto the gravel, spun my wheels and sprayed him. He soon dropped back and I was able to continue my journey safely. I would not recommend this as it could turn into road-rage on idiot's part - but he was in the wrong! It could also be quite dangerous, but I did it on a straight part of the road.

It is all very well to say let them go, but is there space if you do. especially in peak traffic. How do you make the legal gap yourself if you let them go. The you hjave the next one on your tail. Where does it end. My Mother has left legal space and somebody changes lanes and forces their way in. Some just like weaving in and out of traffic. There was one weaving in and out of traffic from the middle of the city of Adelaide heading west towards the beach, often gaining nothing because of the change of traffic lights. My thought was 'keep that up and we'll see you up the road'. Sure enough shortly afterwards he sideswiped another car. There were plenty of witnesses and the traffic became congested so we didn't pull over. It appeared nobody had been injured at all but there was plenty of assistance there if needed.

What gets my goat is tail gaters. I travel 45 km to work and at least one morning a week I get tailgated and abused. I sit on the speed limit and I get out in the right hand lane to overtake and get back in the left. But all those impatient people just zoom up behind me and sit so close to the back of my car I can hardly see their bonnet. I love it though when they overtake me only to get stuck behind other cars.

I live in the country and drive a small hatchback. The transports tailgate and all I can see in the revision mirror is a very large bullbar. It is especially dicey when you get stuck between 2 trucks.

P Platers should obey the law and full licenced drivers should have more patience with them. They seem to forget where they started from once they are off their Ps.

have to agree. I remember when my daughter was learning to drive, I came home one day to find my daughter and wife looking at the front of our car just in the start of the driveway near our gate. When I walked over my daughter said "I didn't hurt the car dad" I looked around and here was the front gate on the ground, picked it up and fixed the gate and today she is a really good driver. We all do some silly things in cars especially when we are young, I know I did, but we learn.

I would have to say that not all P platers are bad, some are just inexperienced and we should be a bit tolerant, we were all once P platters. I think there is a bad lot in all age groups and no matter the age, they are dangerous.

Quite right that P plater need plenty of consideration especially if they are first year out, Red P's. My gripe is with those drivers who can't bear to be behind anything that is bigger than what they are driving. They have to pass asap and most often at inappropriate places or times.

Too right, we all had to learn at some stage and sometimes I would rather get stuck behind a P-plater than a so called experienced driver that thinks they know what they are doing. Consideration and patience are virtues we all need but sadly some don't have.

The driving habits of 'P' plate drivers...Do I have to say any more?

Unfortunately P platers have been taught to drive 'offensively' instead of defencively. Around here they all seem to be talking on mobiles, tailgating, running red lights and assume they always have the right of way on round abouts. All the extra hours supervised training make difference when the driving instructors don't teach them to be courteous and cautious.

I guess you must be a perfect driver , like all the other crappy drivers who think because they have had a licence for years they are always in the right even if it causes an accident .Everybody has to learn and I found a lot worse drivers on the road I drive the pacific highway regularly and its not the road that kills its the idots who are on it !

I agree, they make a truckload of money, raise their own pays and pensioners and others who are struggling get left out in the cold to manage as best they can. Even the banks are making billions of dollars and raising rates to an unrealistic high - so that home owners who can no longer meet their mortgages are being removed and left to find alternate accommodation - not to mention the staff who are being retrenched, so unfair in this day and age, how are their families meant to live day to day and pay bills etc.

What's a P plate driver??

In Australia we begin to learn on L plates ( L plates are displayed on the front and rear of the car) L platers must drive supervised by a full licensed driver for 120 hours. Which needs to be logged into a diary. A written exam on road rules is all they need to do to get their L's. Then they do a driving test and if they pass they get their P's which is also displayed on the car and they can drive unsupervised.
My daughter is quite a good little driver but after just 120 hours she is not perfect. She does however get very flustered when people see the P plates, presume she doesn't know what she is doing and start blasting horns and tailgating her.
It's easy to say P platers don't know how to drive because quite frankly they really are not experts, and I often think the people that have been driving for years and are trying to get her off the road and out of they way are the ones that cannot drive.
A small amount of patience and understanding would go a long way.

From the appalling prejudice written here against P plate drivers (which I assume to be learners) I can only agree with you. When I started reading the comments I wondered what the vitriol was all about. I can hardly believe that all they are talking about is poor learner drivers!! Where did THEY learn to drive aI wonder and do they, with all their wisdom and experience now drive perfectly? I suspect not.

I have a 19 year old daughter finished top of her class in yr10 of high school, went straight into the only job she ever wanted (apprentice chef) has stayed with the same a la carte restaurant for 2 1/2 yrs doesn't drink, smoke or swear. The most level headed person I have ever met or would hope to be but is constantly being yelled at, sworn at and almost driven off the road by people who think that because she is a P,plater she doesn't know how to drive. Maybe we could all be a little more sensitive to ALL road users and not ones we predeem to be good drivers. Perhaps with a little more patient understanding and a kind smile ( even to those who don't deserve it) would warm our hearts and you never know that P,plater might smile back, mouth sorry and be aware that they too have a right to learn to drive.
