Could the recently announced Pay rise for Politicians be better spent

The 30% percent increase to politicians pay packet could in my opinion be better spent on many badly needed things. By my estimate we will be paying at least $10.5 million per annum plus the extra super that follows. All this while Mr. Swann is asking the rest of us to tighten our belts. Having spent the savings of the previous Government and having put our country back in the red by 100's of Billions of dollars, he wants us to believe they deserve the extra money. Enough is enough, we need to stop this waste.

in a word YES, they were doing a study on VV sons and daughters, they stopped the study in the middle saying they could not afford to continue as well as to do their humanitarian work for the refugee`s , ( which I believe is wrong, not wrong exactly, but look after your own first) anyway 1 week later (YES THATS RIGHT )ust one week later they gave themselves a pay rise, the poor buggers are living such an inprovished life they need more ,(sarcasm is the lowest form of whit I know, just can not help it ) P.S. TO THE GOVERNMENT, myself and mNY MORE ARE LIVING WITH OUT MUCH , but you know what, I`d like more, who would`nt, but if they were children they`d be told to FNISH WHAT YOU STARTED

I think that Politicians salaries have to be kept inline with the average CEO salaries, most of them fall short of this. God help,us if we don't offer decent salaries then we won't be able to attract the right people I to the mob. Who on earth would want to be one? 24x7' not me.

Yes Paradox, true. Many things need to be changed, unfortunatey their boss the encumbent PM has the last say if they go or stay and just look at the
people still currently employed in Fed Parliament who should have left long ago instead of having the public go through their sordid life, it is all about politics and staying in power. Hope you have got a lot of time and patience to make some changes, good luck!

Hi skp, as I have said earlier pay politicians a reasonably high wage, throw in a few incentives like their much loved consultants (who on average earn more than their employers) and use the public service for what they get paid for, service the country. If elected "Leaders" cannot perform their sworn duties, dump em without ceremony. They were elected on certain promises, a Prospectus if you like and should be made to fulfil those undertaking. If corporations make wrong statements regarding their affairs they are dealt with expeditiously by the law. Politicians should not be exempt from the law of the land. Further I am bewildered by the fact that they can make any statement, allegation in Parliament with complete immunity. That also has to be changed and will no doubt lead to a more efficient government. 8-| 8| B-| B|

Hi - I am disgusted by politicians too - the way they behave - they are not governing the Country but trying to be re-elected. I don't believe any of them have the interests of the people at all. It is all about power, super, and being important.

To introduce something else - I have been on Newstart Allowance - after 60 years of age you cannot get a job - no one wants you - you are in deep trouble if you have a mortgage to pay (which I did). It means you have to sell your house and get a cheaper one (of course losing money on the sale for real estate charges, taxes etc). That means you have to buy way out where there would certainly not be jobs. The Government is only thinking about their budget and getting re-elected. The constant arguing between Labor and Liberal etc., does nothing to grow Australia. Our manufacturing industries and others are going down the drain. I am not sure where we are headed.

bravo, bravo anna, well said. Pay the Prime-minister a million bucks a year, give limited staff and facilities and the other Pollies remuneration to suit and Bob's your uncle. When we get to form...

We have to get rid of the dead wood first & then you & I can talk turkey! The oldies party is VITAL & IMPORTANT. The people who care & think for themselves is what we need. No arguing & bs, we need GOOD DEBATING, solid caring for those we look after. WHAT WE HAVE THERE NOW, DO NOT CARE FOR US AT ALL! What a COUNTRY we leave for our offspring is a worry, BIG TIME! COME ON THOSE WHO CHAT AT WORK, SHOPS, HOME, WHO HAVE REAL CONCERNS FOR THE FAMILY & AUSTRALIA, PUT YOUR HAND UP & BE COUNTED! I AM RETIRED BUT WOULD LOVE TO SUPPORT THOSE WHO LOVE & WOULD CARE TO RUN THE COUNTRY OF AUSTRALIA!

When we get to form the the Oldies Party you can be one of the first to join us. We could be a force to be reckoned with, don't you think? I'm working on a constitution and platform which will take some time and am making a list of interested people. We must be active in politics to make a difference and change the way this country is run. How insulting of the Labour Government to offer us a set top box to appease us. How dare they if think of crap like this.

When you watch the performance of most of the pollies today you really do wonder how a pay rise of this magnitude can possibly be right. I watch Question Time and I can tell you that the disgraceful behaviour of the so called Cabinet members is surely no way for grown men and women to behave, particularly when they are supposedly representing the rest of us. The PM is like a "sunday school teacher" when she is meeting with Leaders of other countries, but when she is in the House - oh what a true picture we get.( The way she behaved with Obarma was strange! ) I definitely dont think they should have gotten a rise of this size, particularly when we know how many are stuggling to make ends meet. The pollies have no conscience when it comes to what they can get for themselves. Even when they get thrown out of government they can live the high life with the size of their pensions and privledges. Most of them dont deserve what they get.

Talk about poison chalice!

This pay rise replaces the former gold card, so while it is going to cost us a small fortune, it is going to SAVE a small fortune too. The thing is, I am not sure what wil happen for the former MPs who are already living high on the hog thanks to having retired before this card was abolished. ...so it may be a while before we get to save any money on the deal!

And the 'independant umpire' says that it is deserved! (at least this time it is not the pollies who are voting THEMSELVES a pay rise! - now that IS a little greasy!)

BUT - deserved (or not), we are in dire financial straits as a country, and OTHER groups deserve and seek smaller pay rises. ...and if THEY are being told 'yes - but we can't afford it... so wait.' or 'yes, - but you cant have it all at once' - then this is what the pollies should have been told too.
