My Cat loves to bite and tear boxes to pieces He has his favorite types, corrugated cardboard not to thin or thick and he takes bites out of it and spits them out .......... great for the compost. Does anyone else's cat do this ?

Our MANX, Miah, will destroy any piece of paper left where she can get at it - especially Bank Statements. She also chews up carboard boxes sometimes. However I have an empty shoe box and she hasn't chewed it - she has taken ownership of it and will curl up in it...she only just fits.

When we got Miah she came from the animal welfare at Coomera, Qld. She had been in a home full of young people and bull terriers, the latter who wished to eat her or use her as a rag doll to play with (she did not want to play their games) so Miah climbed the curtains to escape and got beaten for her life preserving efforts by her owners who eventually surrendered her for shredding the curtains. When we got her you could not pat her as the hand only meant one thing - a beating - so she would scratch and bite. 2 years on and now she snuggles up on the bed for a pat and a scratch under the chin. She now lets us pick her up for a cuddle though she still prefers NOT to be handled. Even our fairly large dog (who himself is a pussycat) does not faze her, she goes out the cat flap in the front door and walks over the top of him - not that he cares. I still have not manged to get her to come back in the cat flap, she walks around to the side door and meows to come in. Anyone would think we were her servants. My other cat, Kit Kat, who was given to me some years ago by a customer who was moving house and going to take her to the pound, is a part Persian and thinks she is a Princess. She has never been interested in chewing paper or boxes. She comes and goes via the cat flap whenever she feels like it - getting less frequent these days as she prefers to stay outside and sleep on the roof of my wife's car. I almost have to beg her to come in for dinner, Miah on the other hand mostly just snacks on WHISKS pellets whenever she wants. Two very different personalities. As for two she cats in the house, they stay out of each other's path and there's no trouble. Miah learned that Kit Kat is Top Cat after a couple of biffs in the ear fro KK and stays out of her way although sometimes they will eat side by side and never bother about each other.

Animals are funny - when you consider that dogs and cats are supposed to be mortal enemies and Miah will actually go snuggle up with our dog. And dogs... why do they like to go and roll in some other dog's crap?

My cousin had a dog clipping salon. Sometimes when she visited she had the bin in the car containing the hair to put in her own household rubbish bin (both the home and business were in the same suburb). If she left her car window a few inches, in the cold weather my cat would jump in and lie along the back window in the sun - near the smelly dog hair. No accounting for taste !!!

Yes my cat also loves to chew boxes. Never seen a cat do this before. Very strange.

My cat Rose is 10 years old this year and has done this since she was a kitten. She hates sleeping on anything soft, it has to be flat, hard or cardboard! Her favourite thing is tissue boxes. She tries to squeeze herself in the empty boxes and rips the top opening until she can sit inside it. She is only a small cat hasn't grown much since she was a kitten. I didn't know of anyone else who had a cat like this until I seen this dicussion :)

I have a cat that does the same thing, one christmas we put the tree up and slid the box under the couch (4-5ft box) and by the time the holiday season was over all we had to do was sweep the little flakes out from under the couch, there was no box to put the tree back into. she still does this from time to time if we have a box in the house that doesnt move for a few days.

Funny about the Christmas tree box Our cat Jonesy demolished ours too.
We cant work out where this urge comes from - still it is a harmless hobby just a little extra cleaning required.

Yep. My cat is only 10 monhs old so he's really still a kitten and full of energy. He loves a good chew on anything left laying around like a cardboardbox. But destroying a cardboard box is a great thing when you consider what else he could be destroying. My cat Joey has destroyed all the venitian blinds in the house, chewed on the corners of a few very expensive books, chewed up my fake leather wallet, even jumped on furnature so he could chew on an artwork hanging on the wall. He seems to know the exact things I treasure the most and decideds to destroy them. But he will even chew on metal. He actually pulled the plug for the TV ariel out of the wall and chewed on the metal thing. I have also caught him shewing 5 cent pieces, which can't be good for his teeth. So I'd let you cat enjoy his cardboard boxes. It could be a lot worse.
