Hello there,

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on toilet training a Autistic child?
We have a dvd that the special ed gave us, plus we put him on the toilet x amount of times through the day, plus what the kindy does, but he does not seem to be getting it, are there any other tips we could try?
Thanks all in advance xxx

Hang in there Cricky - there are special rewards that come with caring for a child with a disability - that parents of other children don't 'get' . It will all come together for him one day! - and every time you go through the process for seeming no result is one less time before the penny drops.

Hi Sherri

You are right, there are special rewards from having a special needs child, for example his brain works differently from ours, and seeing him do things faster than what i can do is wicked lol.

But roll on Christmas and the new year, and hopefully (fingers crossed), we will have success xxx

I don't know a lot about asd, but I think that a lot of it is about extra sensitivity to some things and an inability to filter out all sorts of information coming to the brain. So it takes an autistic child longer to process things and respond than it would a child who is not autistic.

So from what I can gather, it is important not to rush things, and speak very literally/factually, and do things in the same way and at the same time time in the same order every day.

You didn't say how old your son is, or whether ur using the picture charts etc. - but whatever it is I think that it is important to keep on doing what you are doing, - particularly if it is the same thing as the school. Same cue words etc.

The other thing you can do is ask if one of his teachers-or the aide could do a home visit so that school and home could work together on this important project.

Thanks for your response Sherri, my son is 4 years old, the kindy use a picture chart, we are in the process of finding pictures and converting them to card as finances allow.
