HI there, the Animal Welfare authorities have no intention of allowing Government to shut down puppy farms. They stock their shelters by stealing peoples puppies, especially well bred, popular, pedigreed stock, on the pretense of inspecting them[ at a kenneling cost of $10 per day charged to the breeder, and keeping them up to 6 months without any action being taken] when the breeder,or puppy farm is told that it will cost several thousands to bring them home, the breeder, unless they go to court, tells the Welfare people to keep the dogs, pups, or in some cases i`ve heard of -kittens of beautiful & popular breeds breeds . I do think that puppy breeders should be encouraged to act ethically in regards to breeding out genetic faults. DNA testing is available for a number of eye problems [PRA and cataracts]..,free of charge from one lab in USA. A vet can refer you if it`s in the breed you have. as for pet shops, I know of some who refer people to reputable breeders, so you can keep contact with the breeders, others dont stock the puppies/kittens but refer you instead, getting a commission if you buy. Its up to the buyer to make their own judgement by asking a lot of questions and getting the vaccination certificate, making sure its current and puppy is immune[2 weeks to be fully effective]ask worming history and the name of their vet is very important, for a reference. see the mother ,and father if possible. Lastly don`t listen to rumors about breed lines/breeders. there is a lot of jealousy, vendictive people in the pet breeding business.out to put each other out of business.Go see for yourself.

I hate puppy farms, they are dispicable. I would always choose a pet from the Animal Welfare League or similar.

hi jade, i would ALWAYS favor the animal welfare groups with a no kill policy, its s less distressing experience. when you go to choose a dog you want to bring them ALL home! i wish the government would put the funding they give to government-run dogs homes, to a scheme to make free desexing available.the councils should be responsible for gathering stray dogs, which after a few weeks, if unclaimed, should be farmed out for rehomeing to the no-kill welfare groups. more people should support those groups, donate time and equipment as well as food. close down all killing institutions! -Simla

I believe that if you want to have a puppy to look after you are making a life long commitment decision and must be prepared for the work entailed to look after the animal for it's lifetime. It does not matter where Julia Gillard picked her puppy up from , providing it is a recognised, registered, puppy farm, the decision is hers to make. You do not ( with regards to the Discussion: Puppy Farms disgruntled appalled person) make erronious statements with regards to why Julia made that decision. That is simple people with simple minds that have nothing to do but criticise others. They must have very lonely, boring lives to be so vindictive. The person concerned needs to GROW UP and learn to be an adult themselves because her words are pure childish behaviour. If Julia did pick up a puppy from the RSPCA or even a Veterenarian the person concerned would even then be using stupid caustic remarks to belittle Julia Gillard. I believe she did not vote labour when she had the opportunity in the election. She needs to realise that Julia Gillard is the Prime Minister, a very talented woman, yes, not married, but the figure head of Australia, in her capacity of Prime Minister. There are too many people that are knockers of anyone successful here in Australia. Give the woman a go as she is a proud Australian, and to me a woman in an essentially man's environment and has proved her worth to the Australian people. Yes she has made errors of judgement but what Prime Minister hasn't Besides the puppy will be very well looked after as Julia Gillard, even when she has to travel either here in Australia, or for that matter overseas will ensure that she has a carer for her puppy as it grows and the puppy will soon understand Julia Gillards role and will still love her master, and her fiance' all the more. I am Philip Mew, no non de plum! I do not hide behind the door on these things of importance.

Weatherman, it does matter where someone buys a puppy from.

Take buying from a pet shop for example. By failing to establish communication, both the seller and the buyer forgo the chance to influence future breeding decisions and the health of the specific dogs. The breeder won't know fido and 3 of his litter mates died of Histio before their 6th birthday, and consider removing offspring of those parents from his breeding program. The puppy buyer has no-one to ask about known illnesses in the lines of their dog when the vet can't can't determine what may be killing Rover.

It's one thing to accept that gap with a shelter or rescue dog, another entirely to endorse it by putting money into the supply chain. The way I see it, farms are for livestock - companion animals should come from responsible breeders or the rescue/shelter system.

Hi, I know what is happening with these farms? I think the pet shops have a lot to answer to.

If we stop buying these little puppies and kittens it will slow it down, that is a start.
