If you have a spray pack - 5 litres is a good size, buy some concentrated pyrethium and make up a mix to drench the areas with. Good cheap insect killer but remember it has to hit the target to kill it so give a good drenching. Mix only as instructed as to add more makes no difference to effectiveness and just wastes your money

I used white vinagar when i lived in alice Springs & there are plenty of spiders, ants ect. they all leave the area, but you do have to repeat the spraying every couple of days. Be sure to buy the kitchen vinagar and not the cleaning kind. there is a big differance.

Just use surface spray around the inside area's of your home eg.. windows, where the skirting boards meet the floor and around the architraves where your walls meet the ceiling. This will keep them from entering the home. (Read on the surface spray can how long this will last you for & mark it on your calendar before it should loose it's affect) then follow this procedure again as needed. But as far as the spiders outside your house are concerned leave them alone. They protect you from much worse. And if you don't bother them in there domain, they will not bother you. We need all beasts for our eco system.

Vacuum them down if you can reach or hose them down with a strong jet of water from the hose. You might have to hose them a few times until they get the message it's "in the weather" so to speak. They like under the eaves because it's a dry spot to live.

Spiders have a purpose. They catch and kill insects like flies, mosquitoes etc. Huntsmen spiders are quite harmless - admittedly I am not too fond of having them in the house! If I do find any inside I catch them in a jar and put them outside. Most spiders are harmless. I do not like white tail spiders as I have been bitten twice and it is very painful. Fortunately, I was aware of how to treat their bites so I did not get any of the nasty ulcers. I leave the spiders around the eaves alone as long as they stay outside. We used an insect bomb in the shed to get rid of all the black spiders who were taking over. Had to keep out of the shed for a week before going into it as the insectacide smell was terribly potent.

Try Lemon oil. Spiders hate the smell. Just sprinkle the oil over your cobweb brush and wipe over spider prone areas. Worked for me. Good luck! xx

Kaz,
The cheapest and most effective way to rid your home of these little critters is to use 'COOPEX' which is available from Bunnings and other hardwares. It comes in a packet like instant custard powder, you just mix and spray on. You should be 'critter' free for a good 12 months. We have always used it and found it to be very good and inexpensive and safe for people and pets. Just be sure to read the instructions first. GOOD LUCK!

Go to the hardware and buy Cooperex, it is in a powder form that you mix with water and spray on with pressure pack.
good luck.

I was on the phone to a friend last night when out of the corner of my eye I spotted a huge huntsman on the wall. My poor friend got the full force of my shriek down the phone!
Neither me nor my boyfriend are spider fans (in fact, I'm a big arachnophobe) so I'm afraid they usually end up dead in my house.
To answer your question though Kaz, in our previous house I used an outdoor spider spray around all the windows and doors etc and it worked a treat. We moved just recently and now having seen two huntsman spiders in the last week I shall be getting busy with the spray this weekend!

and those horrable black ones well each and everytime I vacumed one up I said the same thing and said sorry for doing it so i went round the house like a lunatick or so I thought and said sorry to every single one when vacuming .

Well guess what I have had no more than the odd one a year (Unbelievable )but its true .

And Snakes the same let them go on their way if too hard get handler in .

i read in a sharon Lush book that if you go around with a broom with Lemon oil (the essential oil) and touch all the webs that spiders don't like the smell and wont come back.

Kaz just buy the outdoor surface spray there are several brands and then spray around the eaves lasts a few months before you have to do again. Big spiders like huntsmen don't like it either.

This is the first time I have actually had responses in Cafe Study Chat discussions.. I really appreciate all comments. I think I may try Surface spray first, if it doesnt work out Ill try the other options. The last few years , there seems to be more ants, spiders then ever before. Its something I guess its some we just have to put up with.

For what it's worth, a pest controller told me that because of their size (I'm referring to the big ones here) the amount of poison needed to definitely kill all spiders is way above the levels considered safe for humans in the long term. He said that the most likely outcome of his laying spider poison around in the highest permissible doses would be that it would kill most of the small and medium sized critters but the largest would survive and multiply. Not a pleasant scenario! He pointed out that most are not aggressive and I'd be better off learning to live with them. If you don't antagonise them they won't bite.

Mortein have a really great spray for this kind of problem

http://www.mortein.com.au/product_prof_out_in_sur_spray.php

I think it's about $30 and it's meant to give similar results to getting a pest controller in, it might be worth a try if you can afford that one. I haven't used it personally, but a couple of friends have, and they found it to be effective.
