Another light one for you all...

If you won a million dollars what would you do with it and why?

Well, first off, I'd make sure to put at least half in a long term savings account.

The rest I would just use for whatever I wanted.

Can't really do much with 1 million these days.
Investing 1/2, I'd pick up just enough that if there is no job it should matter too much. Maybe not - have to pay tax on the interest.

Needing to stay near the city, we'd be stuck with some fairly insalubrious areas to live in by the time all the excessive redtape & gov't fees are added to the house price.

Replace the car & send my parents on a holiday.

Ahhh.............a million. Make it 20 or 30 maybe. Priorities change over time and over what you can and can't afford.
My man and I sometimes while away the hours if there's nothing on TV and discuss what we'd do. We alrready know we'd have to split it down the middle because his priorities and mine are so different.
I really don't know. A stable place to live because I haven't had that a lot in my lifetime. Yeah probably a new car. Mine's over 20 years old and looking a bit worse for wear. But other than that? I'd certainly be able to visit the interstate kids and grandkids more often.
He wants a brand new motorbike and a boat.
I'd help the kids a little but not too much. If you don't work for what you have you don't appreciate it as much. They can have the rest when I'm dead.

Simple, spend it. Build a house, give some to my kids and grand-kids and to my favourite charities and put a bit in the Super fund.

Firstly, I would make sure my husband (who has a life threatening disease) has the operation that he needs and gets professional medical care, pay for his expensive medication and make sure he has a much needed holiday and buy him a new car. Then I would pay off the mortgage, renovate the bathroom which badly needs a makeover and help out family. After that there would not be much left as I have a large family but I would invest enough to live on for the rest of my life.

I would purchase a house to avoid having a mortgage which banks change the rates on daily. The left over money would be invested for a return annually so as to pay rates every year.

Could not win a million dollars. Would have required gambling in the first place. Now if I earned a million dollars would straight onto the stock market to day trade to give me another million, one to play with and the other as a safety net.

a mill really doesn't go that far these days, but i wouldn't complain if I won it :) I would pay off the mortgage, take a long holiday, preferably a cruise around the greek islands, ahhhh bliss !!!!!! and would set up some sort of savings/investment for my kids.

If I won a million.... I'd pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming!

Seriously I'd spend it on either a new house or refurnish this one and then go on a long cruise with my hubby or perhaps visit my in-laws over in England. If anything was left after all that it would go into the bank for bills etc.

Gigi
  • 24th May 2010 10:58am

I'd treat my nearest and dearest on an indulgent holiday. A luxe villa in Canggu Bali or a beach cottage in Sardinia - options galore! While $1million may not go as far as it used to in real estate or mortgage terms - especially when split a few ways - it can facilitate a super holiday for family and friends to remember forever.

  • 30th Apr 2010 01:03pm

So many options, a long term vision would be to set up a real estate business building affordable housing for the less fortunate. Reinvest the profits into a restaurant complimented by a garden for fresh produce.

The added bonus of the restaurant business, long term unemployed manage the business enabling life changing experiences.

Lexi
  • 8th Apr 2010 02:45pm

I would pay off a few loans (not very expensive) then would put aside money to pay for University. After that, I would use a fair chunk of it helping those less fortunate than myself. I wouldn't necessarily donate to charity, but I would definitely use it for good. Then I'd do up the Torana sitting in my backyard. Depending on how much was left, I'd help out my family and friends if they needed it. I'd wisely invest the rest.

  • 26th Feb 2009 02:40pm

I've never owned anything. I was a young parent (male) on my own for years. Could never earn ebough to get ahead. So, I would set my 2 kids up with a place of their own so they could have some security. I think that would just about spend a million, so I would hope that after that they will look after me when I get too old to work. I still don't own anything more expensive than my guitar ($3000) but I'd die content knowing my 2 beautiful kids were comfortable. If there was any left it would go to a charity like Youth off the streets.

Hi

if i won a million dollars, i will pay all my famliy bills and buy a house, save some money and donate to the cancer and blind foundation,

The reason i will give money to these foundations is because i have had family who have passed away from cancer and i have close friends who are blind as well.

buy a house - so that we dont need to worry about paying the rent weekly and my kids will have somewhere stable to live.

I would also give them a generous cash handout for always being there for me when I need them and when I don't. i would purchase myself a small beach shack in a quiet seaside place, so I could retire in my little piece of heaven. I would invest a good deal of the remainder and give at least $100k to cancer reseach.

Same as most people - pay off the mortgage, fix up my 30 year old pool. My partner would want a new car so that would be next but what I REALLY want above all else is great family memories with our 4 teenage kids so I would want to take them overseas. Finally you would have to be sensible so an investment property would be on the cards as well as a m***ive donation to charity. (to the really nice Asian Salvation Army man who sits at a table collecting money around the Northern Beaches of Sydney). I'd just like to put it out into the Universe (via the Law of Attraction) that I am grateful for all I have already and anytime that million wants to come to me, go right ahead!

Buy heaps of shares right now while they are down to snap up prices and then when the market picks up sell and maybe then have $2 mill? Or watch it crash big time LOL... No really I would invest to live without working and spending time on my family. And also give to help others in need.

1. Get a personal trainer [I want my 50 something body back into shape]
2. Have a manicure [my first ever]
3. Employ a m***euse for a treatment every day [heck - I can afford it now]
4. Buy a flat or unit big enough to house all the books I want to have [no more room in my bookshelves]
5. Travel first cl*** to nowhere in particular [it looks so much better than economy]
6. Take my sister and her family to the finest restaurant in Melbourne [want to try something different]
7. Get the cracks in the drought affected walls fixed [missing plaster is not a good look]
8. Visit Disneyland [everyone else seems to have done so and said it was wonderful]
9. Employ someone to cook for me until the money runs out [so I can have a decent meal for once]
10. Do something totally frivolous for my best friends [they make me enjoy my life]

if I had a million dollars, I'd certainly be more relaxed, I wouldn't have to worry about money anymore.
I'd buy a nice house, nothing flash just a nice 3 or 4 bedroom house with a yard. I'd buy a brand new car, probably a Falcon wagon, and get rid of my old car that breaks down (and catches fire like last week).
I'd take my whole family on a Gold Coast holiday, and then I'd holiday in Las Vegas for a week with my hubby, no gambling just looking around.

One million? It's not enough to retire on so we'd buy a house and pay off the car loan so we were debt free. Once those important things were out of the way we'd replace a few furniture items but not all. I don't see the point in replacing things that are reasonably new that we are happy with.
Then my teenager daughters would be given a couple of thousand each to restock their cupboards with clothes. We'd definitely consider a holiday that took us to England and Ireland to visit relatives and see where my mum and dad came from. Anything that was left over would be put in a high interest savings a/c for any unexpected financial issues.
Hmmm maybe I'd get that tummy tuck and **** job. Giving birth to four kids certainly changes the position of a body's lumps and ***ps! I'd definitely fix my teeth.

I would invest the lot in term deposit or similar with min of 5%. That's 50k a year for nothing. Obviously there is interest on that 50k but I'd still be happy with that.

I can't win a million to start with, I don't do lotto, on purpose. I see wealthy people on a daily basis. I don't really like what I see.
Wealthy people are never happy with their lot in life. They always have something too high to strive for.
Be grateful for what we have is my motto.
But in fantasy I would set my kids up with a property. Go on a European Vacation

I am happy with life the way it is, so i would pay off the debts, get a decent car for the hubby, buy a modest house, then pay off the rest of my mum & dads and mother in laws mortgages so they dont have to stress. That is as far as the money would go but it is amazing how much money not having debt frees up. We could live like kings on a normal wage then.

  • 11th Apr 2008 01:45pm

Invest it and live off of the interest earned. Having been in the banking industry (was in it for around 20 years) I have seen first hand what lottery winners do with their money; family, friends and the like appear out of the woodwork. Firstly, don't tell anyone what you've won, secondly, invest wisely. Don't go rushing off to the first financial planner that happens to list in the yellow pages. Do your homework and ask around. Remember, lottery winnings don't come every day, or very often; what you win today will have to last you past next week or next year. Plan ahead

Ok you guys "only a million"! Admittedly it wouldn't go as far as you might like in this day and age but it's better than a slap in the face with a wet fish, right?! Personally, a million would pay off the mortgage, ensure my two tots an education and make our retirement look a little more comfortable when we hit 65! What more do you want or need for that matter..... oh yeah, good health. (Some how I don't think the mill' would stretch to a personal trainer and chef so I think I'll keep buying my lotto tickets! :)

A million is a lot to me.That means I can do and buy everything I want but first I have to think where the money is going, take a quarter or half of it,spent it wisely and share some of it and the rest let the money grows, multiply the money, invest the money and you'll have heaps of money in the future.

If I won a million dollars, I would buy me and my girls a house, send my mum on a holiday overseas and then I would put some money away for the girls education. But in this day and age...there...

With some of the $ I would take a holiday far away form reality. Donate a little, save a little, give a little. Question should be upgraded to a billion, then I would be in panic zone, dodging media, fleeing[no holiday].. I just keep dreaming

I'm with Navygirl - only 1 million? It certainly wouldn't go far! I would pay off the mortgage and other loans, which would porbably leave just enough to get my husband the boat that I keep getting my ear bent about! With those things paid off I would use our income to invest in more real estate, have another baby and go on many holidays!

Now if it was more than 1 million, I would help out family members by paying off any mortgages or substantial loans if they no longer have a mortgage!

I would buy a comfortable house for my family, update the car, spoil the kids rotten for a while and help out the people who are most important in my life.

own half of a house in sydney? doesn't sound so impressive now hey *laughs* actually would probably enroll my son in a private special school which in primary on average are 24k to 42k a year, so wouldn't leave me much small change after paying for his education.

Pay off all my loans, start a trust fund for my kids, buy a new car, and maybe a new house or renovate and put some in a term deposit.
I have a friend who just won $2mil on lotto, you just can't imagine how much it would change your life. She still works and still will. Now she just doesn't have to worry about all the bills like we do!

Only a million? with todays real estate prices It will pay my mortgage off and hopefully get me an investment property. I'd love to go and see my family (in Melbourne) and pay for some repairs around home and to the car. If there is anything left after helping my Mum and brother and sisters, I'd really like some to go to the Sir David Martin streetkids charity or the charity that ensures that young handicapped people don't have to live in old peoples homes. Sadly, with todays prices I don't think I could do all of that with only a million.

Make some structural changes to my home. Buy a new car, put somemoney aside and then see what I could do for my sisters and brother to make life easier for them.
