The standard of Government Housing is quite appalling, they don`t do the repairs (or not properly). We live in Dept Housing House on the Central Coast of NSW, they don`t look after the properties up here, we did live in Sydney, they were good, the properties where well taken care of (maintance Wise}, We actually applied for a transfer to a wheel chair property three and a half years ago, and are still waiting, they are pofetic, any other views or opinions?

we live in a housing sa unit, maintenace takes for ever, we had mould in the bathroom took them 3 months to try and fix it after they finished they said to my husband and me that if it came back we would have to fix it ourselves, i have a heart complaint, plus a bad back, breathing problems and live right opposite a train line and when the trains go through our unit smells like burnt rubber, have been waiting for a transfer for 3 and a half yrs, keep thinking it will never happen, we also had termites took them 3to 4 months to come out and fix it while we waited they ate through the kitchen wall and had a grapping hole for at least 2 months, but i look at that i have a roof over my head, but all the maintenance problems is because they cost cut instead of fixing properly the first time.

I to am in ministry housing in Victoria we have been in same house for 48 years. My fsthdr was told he could purchase the property back in late 70's he hsd been in an accident at work. He walked out of court with $5000 to pay off the house which he had been told he could purchase for $32'000 also at that time half the rent you had paid was also calculated and taken off as we had been here then nearly 15 year it would have been quiet a cosiderable sum. He was refused and told he couldn't afford the repayments tubbish..In 1997 my father had a stroke he spent 3 months in Peter James Centre as their was no access to house for him they then because I went to local mp did work claimed it was disabled home. Now for last 12 years have said it isn't and we are on a waiting list for disabled housing ever promise they make is broken and for a cement box because the post code is 3148 we pay over $600+ pf rent .The house has been paud for 10 times over and I believe they are making no effort to build a disabled house instead they are selling them off for over$700,000 . No effort to help him he hasn't able to access backyard unless he goes via front for 15 years and cannot use his walker inside the house as door ways are too narrow and rooms too small.I don't hold out any hope of them doing anything in his life time. After 7 years of fighting them I have had to give up as it was effecting my health. And as a career for both parents there is already a lot of work to be done to keep things so they can still live at home.

I find Department of Housing are as you say Pathetic, there maintenance is non existant, I feel the tenant should get in a private contractor and have them bill DOH for the service they should be providing, I have a gutter that was cleaned by their maintenance, and they left big holes in the guttering now when it rains, I hear this terrible noise of water hitting the ground near my window, it is very annoying, the DOH inspect it and don't do anything about it, I am fed up with the stupid Maintenance Dept. I feel they should all be sacked and replaced by decent workers, and the DOH needs a troubleshooter from the main office to declare war on this Departmental incompetance, as long as they get their money they don't give a damm about what happens to the dwelling and the people who live in them, I have heard of tennants having to put up with infestation and mouldy rooms and everything else unsanitary, DOH should be condemned for what they are doing to their tenants, and held responsible for their bad decisions.

I was actually SO LUCKY to get a brand new house given to me earlier this year. And I'm not ungrateful BUT
a couple of things I don't quite understand.
I have a BIG 3 bedroom home - for me. Just me. I know there are people out there more needful than me.
It's brand new but NO SOLAR POWER. Surely if the government were truly interested in reducing our carbon footprint, a measly $3,000 - $4,000 extra for solar power would prove cost effective. I am already struggling to meet energy bills. Surely solar power for the poorest in our society would be an effective measure.
As to Chris's plight, just keep on their backs. I have had older public housing before and sometimes found you needed to push a bit harder to get things done. Try using a social worker as they sometimes have more push than you on your own.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Glad you could make it out of hospital for Christmas. I know the waiting list in Victoria is huge. You will definately need the help of a GOOD social worker and letters from as many doctors and speciallists for your son as you can get. By pushing hard (it will be difficult sometimes but don't give up) I'm sure you can get pushed up that list for priority housing. I got my house through some very good mental health workers.
Anyway, hope everybody reading this has a VERY happy and joyous Christmas and New Year.

Here in Bendigo we have had numerous government owned housing properties left for considerably periods unused, or neglected.
Our previous State Government when contacted about same, did not want to know able them, and left them in the too hard basket.
Some of these properties were used by drug addicts and others.
They were not used by the people that needed them.

Hi Graeme, it is a pity that the so called Governments can not fix these houses up and give them to all our homesless, they damn well disgust me, money and all the help these refugeee`s want, and our Australians are walking the streets or sleeping in cars with KIDS, it a joke, and NSW housing can not really fix a house up for a disabled person. DISGUSTING

Govt. housing,i think,is as good as what you can make it.I know it`s a great relief to have something to live in.
Do any repairs you can after you ask the local boss. You are making the house
better for yourself, and also the inspectors become aware that you are trying hard,
and have spent your own money to do it,but make sure they know.
When it`s time to repair something big,ask them to please help you out.You are not kowtowing to them, you are getting what you need. Also, treat the house as if it is yours.Try to make your house blend in,not stand out. It works,-----I know!

Good advice - it should be common sense but many lack it.

ozziedigger, I have lived in Dept of Housing for a long time, (24 years) this is the second house in that time the first being for 18 years, in that time we won best garden comps in our area, painted our houe (inside) several times, and all kept my (our) house Clean, tidy and always looking nice. We got a transfer up to this area for family reasons and have been here 6 years, since we have been here mt sons health has deterated, and of course I am a lot older, I find with his health deteration,I have to do more for him and can not do as much for the house, although it has been painted, carpets cleaned on a regular basis, but alas can not fo what we used to my so is now semi dependant on a wheel chair, the reason we neede a medical transfer is because he needs a special shower(hobless)mand can not utilise the wheelchair as he should.
