Organ transplantation and donation

Please consider and talk it over with your family the
live saving gift of life. Organ donation can mean the difference between life and death for so many on the waiting list. I was most fortunate enough to have a life saving lung transplant in 1998 and I shall ever be grateful to the family of my donor who I most probably will never meet.

We have all talked about this and agree with donating all our organs. You cant take them with you and may just help someone in the future. Be brave and do it.

Good discussion bobskey.

I donated one of my kidneys to our youngest daughter, who became ill with kidney failure in 2005 at the age of 18, unfortunately the kidney I gave her only lasted 18 months, she is now on the deceased donor's list.

She has just turned 25, Works as a manager in a creche at a fitness centre, studying at uni majoring in a Bachelor of Commerce (Managerment). She does dialysis at home 5 times a week 5 to 6 hours each time.

For anyone who wishes to donate their organs it is not good enough to have it on your driver's license today. as family can overrule your decision. If you wish to be a organ donor you must discuss this with your family, so they know what your wishes are. Then to be an organs donor you need to register with The Australian Organ Donation Register which you can find on the Medicare Website http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/ Once you have registerd they send you a card in the mail to keep with you at all times, so people know that you are an organ donor. I hope this has helped anyone who wishes to become a donor. :)

I am a great believer in organ donation. When I got a new licence a few years ago, one of the questions I had to fill out was, would I donate my organs and I said yes. I was upset to find out this being written fon your licence makes no difference. You have to sign a different document to be on the donar listing, I wish some one would let people know that,. I am now going to find out what I need to sign so that I can donate my organs.

This is so important! Feel how marvellous it is when some-one, as recently happened lost a child suddenly, and made the decision for organ transplantation donation. Very difficult in the circumstances and very brave. It is highly emotive and personal, I have a problem with the current situation, where you can nominate to be a donor and it can be over-ruled at your death by other people. This needs to be looked into. I do not like the fact, your decision can be reversed so easily.

More people should donate blood too unless they have medical problems which prevent them from doing so. My uncle had a condition that his liver manufactured too much iron and they often had to "take" blood ( a fair amount) to help with the problem. It upest him that they were unable to use it for blood transfusions at all. My Mother had a tendency for the same condition and she had to have blood taken occasionally (600ml) and they had no way of using hers either. Some medications also prevent them using your blood for transfusions for others - I mean geniune lifesaving medications - not some taken randomly or because of other addiction.

I totally believe in organ donation, to know that I will be possibly saving quite a few lives is just wonderful. I saw a doco where the mum of an organ donor touched the chest of a heart patient and knew that the heart belonged to her son just touched me so much, that doco is what made me become a donor.

I definitely believe in organ donating. However l have seen a lot of potential donors wishes to donate not come into effect because although they had Donor on their driver's licences their families weren't aware of this and by the time they found out it was too late. The body was already buried or cremated.

I have put my name on the organ donor register and have encouraged many of my family members to do the same. Its of no use to you when you are gone but it could help someone to lead a much better life. Makes sense to me.

Rebek. To make certain that you and your husbands wishes are adhered to and to all those others who have it noted on their drivers licence, I encourage all of you to go to the www.organdonor.gov/ website and sign onto the national register for organ donation. That is the best way of letting eveyone know of your wishes to become a donor.

I agree and not only that, have it put in your will as well. Organ donation is a wonderful thing. My ex husband passed away recently and my youngest daughter donated his eyes so that someone will be given the gift of sight which is very precious gift to have and I am very proud of her for doing that, it was a hard decision for her to make.

A resent news story fromm Melbourne was that they have more donations that they can surculy take out, with only 2 teams. The teams wanted access to more operating rooms to harverst organs, the hospital stoped any more rooms used. They wanted to fix the living now rather than loose them, then while a "dead" body was harvested. Where is the orgon donar center? We should have a dedicate harvest room in every hospital.

Have you all told the person that will ID your body, or have control at your death that you want to donate.
I lost a friend due to a 'missing' father stopping the harvesting of his long lost sons organs against his sons wishes.

With all the deaths in Australia, why is it that we don't all donate our organs and give the gift of life to someone who needs it? Are we so selfish that we don't want to share? Are we just ignorant? I have always been 4 giving the gift if anything happens to me, and we have discussed it many times. It's not morbid, just sensible to consider that something might happen! Why can't we nominate on our Licences that we are organ donors?

It's definitely something I am all for. I've told my husband and family that whatever can be used, I'm happy for them to donate. I won't need any of it when I am gone.

I absolutely believe in organ donation and have told all my family so. I don't know what I would do with them after the fact, but they would be much more useful somewhere else! My mother hates the idea, however. I will have to make sure my husband stands up for my beliefs if the unthinkable happens!

I agree with organ donation and I wish I had been more aware of this wonderful organization when I lost my son in 82 as he was only 18 and would have been an excellent canderdate, I have it on my licence, but I suppose you have to be that way inclined

As much as I would like to give you some idea Im afraid I am at a loss. I do know that some people with various diseases can only dontate retinas but that would have to be better than not helping at all.

I am a big believer in organ donation, just as I am with blood donation.
The problem is that I am not allowed to do either. I have an auto immune disease that can remanifest through plasma and organs. Which I personally think is awful. I want to donate and I am not allowed to.
I am allowed to let medical students use my body for research though. I am not sold on that idea just yet. Any ideas?

Thank you in stating this fact as I am finding I have a similar problem. I also have an auto immune disease. At one time they thought it was Lupus, but now they say it isn't but, I still don't know what form it is. You would think however, if more people like us could donate our bodies to Science they could find out a lot more instead of leaving so many questions unanswered

In response to your message, i personally just googled the following words, "universities that accept donations of bodies for scientific purposes", this will give you the leads you require and also help you understand what happens with the whole process. There are universities all over the world that are involved in this process.Hope this helps in this some way. From Wowi.

The way I see it is you can't use your organs once your dead and so you may as well donate them. Maybe if the funeral costs were covered for the deceased, more people may consider this option.

I have the same opinion that once you have passed your organs are no good to you, but you could save another life which is a great human act. Our family member's funeral was paid for and you can research and find that some medical universities will do this for you, thus relieving a great deal of stress for the family.
