The first issue is that the major political parties have conspired amongst themselves to ensure that either Tweedledum or Tweedledee is elected. The minor parties are either radical single-issue fanatics who will sell out what's left of the NSW economy for their own ends or are obstructionists who sell out principles for minor issues of interest to their own tiny band of supporters.

On the one hand, the incumbents have resorted to nanny-state tactics to win back the support of their own rank-and-file. They apply ranting Marxist anti-landlord rhetoric to impose more and more bureaucratic controls and discourage evil landlords (most of whom are actually Mums'n'Dads trying to put a little aside to provide for for their old age) and then stand around open-mouthed wondering why there are so few private rentals available and rents are rocketing.

For instance, a strata-title company (the owner of the common area in a block of units) is required to submit a Fire Safety report and an Occupational Health and Safety report annually. A landlord must ensure that a mains-wired smoke alarm is fitted (because errant tenant would remove the batteries form battery-operated units, then wonder who to blame and who to sue when the unit mysteriously didn't operate) and that the unit is operational, and that all lights are operational, all leaking taps are repaired and "water-efficient" devices are fitted in the kitchen and bathroom. Note that this only applies to RENTED premises, because it's easy to legislate against evil landlords (grrr grrr!) and might cause a small adverse reaction were the politicians to attempt to apply their rules to the population at large.

Against that, there is an insipid opposition of non-entities, ready to take power simply because that's how the parties have manipulated the system. They don't have to actually DO anything, they're elected by default - same as the other tribe, just cogs in a party machine.

So - who specifically, given that everyone in NSW is a candidate? Well, the only person who has had the gumption to express ideas is Pauline Hanson - and she's a Queenslander. Not saying I'd personally like to see her in that position, but I'm sure she'd give them curry.

Or perhaps fish & chips...
