Digital camera's are an inexpensive way to show your life in pictures because you no longer have the costs of the film and the developing of the film. The one problem is permanence. The memory cards used in the camera have a limited life span and if like some, chuck the cards in a drawer as their backup of their photo's; they may not realize that the storage life of the memory cards is limited.
digital photography is great but how you store your precious memories is important too.

Best thing with the digital camera is that it can also take movie clips to catch those things a still shot mises out on. Andy ten SD cards is a lot easier to carry than rolls of film.

As an amatuer photographer, my digital camera's form part of my life, daily used to record life in motion, voice and stills.
