OK - something a bit lighter for mums with young kids. Has the Wiggles or Hi-5 entered your world? Which does your kid prefer ,and if neither then what? Do you find yourself dancing round the house humming their tunes?

Mum's with older kids -  what can't they miss on TV and how old are they?

I have a 11yo girl and 7yo boy - I have gone through the Wiggles and Hi -5 with both of them. They still watch Hi-5 given the chance.

Now that they are older our daughter loves Glee ( I have to monitor the espisodes she watches), also I Carly and the Wizards of Waverly place.

Our son likes most cartoons but really enjoyes anything to do with animals eg Deadly 30, Barneys Barrier Reef ( on 23)

Both love Pixel Face (23)

Hey everyone why has no one praised Play School on the ABC? As a retired kindy teacher and now a grandmother of three I still think there is no program more suitable for little ones than it. The whole thing is so well tuned to the appropriate needs of little people. No one is "sleeping"on the job or singing silly songs like the Wiggles and now that they are aging (Jeff is 57) dont you think it is time for them to hang up their wriggles?? Hi5 brought in a younger group when their original group aged. Ofcourse actually going to a rythmn and rhyme session is the best way to sing and dance with your little ones.

My little 2 year old granddaughter adores things like Winnie the Pooh and can sit through entire Tigger and Pooh movies!!! I am amazed that one so little can sit transfixed for that length of time at all. we all adore the Winnie-the-pooh characters tho so I guess that is our family legacy! Ha Ha

I have been listening to The Wiggles for years, the difference is I have had the financial ability to indulge my youngest two with it. We went to the concert last year, and I paid extra for tix this time round so we can be near front stage. Me second eldest is 10 and she used to like them when she was younger, my niece (18) was a huge fan as a kidlet too. So they certainly aren't new to me.
My 10yo liked Hi-5 back then too, the only one that was a good performer was Nathan; but I don't know anybody that has kids who like it now.

My 10 & 12yo's like anything on ABC 3 that is on late afternoon & Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation. And my 12yo is getting rather interested in older shows

My whole family love Justine Clarke and Georgie Parker... I frequently find myself playing their CDs in the car (and singing along loudly) even after I drop the kids (now 5 and 7) off at school... oops!

Even my husband likes Justine (he thinks she's cute!) and will "allow" her stuff to be played in his presence... but he can't stand The Fairies!

My 2 & 1/2 year old doesn't even know what they are. He doesn't really watch TV, he's just not interested. He would prefer me to put some music on so he can spin around in the lounge room.

Go the wiggles, my three love them, and sing along with the songs. "Wake up Jeff" is a favourite. Hi-5 just isn't the same, the originals were the best group and none of the others have been as good

I like it when the wiggles have the old classics. Mostly though, as a parent, I prefer playschool, it is so easy to integrate things they do on playschool into our real life, doing their craft or playing the same games as them.

My daughter who is 4 next month always asks to watch the wiggles and high 5 but she never sit's and watches them even though she says she likes them. But I have found that buying a cheap cd player has kept her amused for hours. She pick's her own cd's to listen to and can turn the cd player on and off herself, and yes I find myself signing along to the songs no matter how annoying they are.

We went through all of them with our now 7 yr old daughter, started with the wiggles moved onto high 5 then the Fairies and now we have moved onto Hannah Montana! My 4 yr old will dance to anything from Hi 5 to Pink!!! I think as long as they are enjoying themselves I can deal with any of it.

When my daughter was younger it was the wiggles. Now she is 4 it is hi-5. She loves the singing and dancing. She still loves the wiggles. My son who is a year older never liked any of them and has always liked to watch cartoons like Ben 10. Must admit I prefer the wiggles.

my little boy is twelve months and has loved the wiggles since he was 3 months old, its the only thing that kept him quite, and now he tries to sing and his dancing is just adorable, cant help but laugh. my partner was in the shower singing the other night and i commented on his lovely song, he replied with "its the bloody wiggles isn't it". So yes the songs definately get stuck in your head.

My son has just turned 2 and really enjoys the Wiggles. I think it might be a nice change for him instead of learning from me or the ladies at daycare. He thinks it great & it really encourages him to dance & sing along. He particularly loves the wiggles 'getting strong' DVD and tells me he's doing his exercise! What a great thing to encourage at such a young age. He watches the Wiggles DVD's about 4 times a week and the rest we encourage him to play with his toys & we read to him so he doesn't get too lazy and we don't like to rely on the TV too much to entertain him when we know his imagination is growing by the day.

My children are now getting older but they liked both wiggles and hi 5 cause both are very fun and happy makes the children dance and have some fun. Always nice to see children with a smile on their dial.
Iam afraid my children have taken a liking to webkinz, buildabearvill virtual worlds now. When is Australia going to have their own virtual world why is it always over seas. I have an idea so any one who is hand with computer and knows a bit about childrens education please let me know.

With four kids the oldest being 9 and the youngest being 20 months, I found they like them both, although the boys do tend to sway more towards the wiggles and the 1 girl in the house will dance to any type of music even in the supermarket. They have enjoyed the music, video and shows by both bands. The Disney classic are a big favourite in our house along with Tom and Jerry. Can't beat the old favourites.

With the 9 and 6 year oldsBen 10 is so cool. # and 20 months it's Old Macdonald farm and Mickey mouseclub house along with Dora.

Both my kids, 7 yrs & 11 mths, luv the Wiggles. Hot Potato is the main song they like and dance to, all the time. As soon as I put on the DVD, my 11 mth old screams "Wiggles" and bops away to all the songs from her walker. ELMO and Friends are also are a great hit with them. I don't think that they will ever lose their following, 'cause they're so cute and adorable. Hi-5 just doesn't seem to be the same without all the original members. They've lost their zest. i still love the 2 originals that are still there, but it's not he same.

I have a 13 year old who loved The Wiggles and a 9 year old who loved Hi5. My 20 month old loves The Fairies. All songs are very catchy. I loved listening and dancing to all the songs as my children grew up. Right now my Husband is enjoying The Fairies with our youngest. He couldn't stand Hi5 or The Wiggles (although he watches Wiggle and Learn each morning with our youngest). Lucky for the oldest children that I was the stay at home parent and not Dad.

WIGGLES!!!! Hi 5 are good, but you cant beat D>O>R>O>T>H>Y, or big red car, the songs keep going around your head all day. Jeff is so funny falling asleep everywhere, we all wish we could at times! Anthony eats like we wish we could at times. So I say Wiggles
out do Hi 5!

Definitely Wiggles in this household. My son just loves them. He likes Hi 5 as well, but I can'st stand them, so it's a very rare occasion that he gets to watch them. I think the Wiggles are far more educational and send the right message to the kids. There's plenty of dancing and singing Wiggles songs in this house!

the hi fives are more watched in my house as well as the hoolie doolies as they are more original with their songs and topics are more educational. even at events and shows the hoolie doolies are more friendly and have more attention for all the children around them.

Hi - I've just joined. I have a daughter who is now nine - today infact - and a son who is 6. The wiggles never really had a showing in our house as my daughter fell in love with sesame street & in particular elmo. By the time my son was born, she was into Hi 5 & therefore he didn't get much choice. But I must say he was absolutely mad over Thomas the Tank Engine - still loves him. We have the toys, books, videos, dvds, pj's, games, flash cards, you name it.

Wiggles for my 2 year old. Especially Dorothy. She's not a fan of Hi-5 at all.

I find myself singing Wiggles songs even when I wake in the middle of the night and thanks to this discussion forum, I find myself singing "wags the dog" right now. haha. I recently sat on Ticketek fighting 1000's of other mums for hot potato tickets...sadly, I remember a time when I used to fight for really cool concert tickets...now it's the Wiggles.

  • 15th Jul 2008 12:53pm

Both of my girls have absolutely loved HI-5, they are aged 4 and 8. Having been to a number of concerts over the years HI-5 are value for money as are the Playschool concerts. My husband even has the HI-5 tunes in his head as he works and surprisingly knows most of the lyrics. My 8 year old is now into Hannah Montana, Corey in the House, Spongebob Squarepants and most shows on Nickelodean, I don't know why7!!!! Much to her horror she is not allowed to watch violent shows, as it was showing in her behaviour and since they have been banned (which they have always been, but she was watching them on the sly), we have had a much better behaved and nicer child.

We're Hi-5 and Wiggles fans. We alternate between the two. My husband prefers Hi-5 because their songs and dance routines are more complex. Our daughter (almost 2yrs) has days where she'll only want one or the other. Goes in phases. I'm happy with either. I find myself dancing and singing to both groups, and will often have nursery rhymes and the like pop into my head, which I won't be able to get out. I'll also corelate terms that are spoken in my job, which remind me of either a Hi-5 or Wiggles song. Sad really ;-)

My son discovered the Wiggles just before he turned 2. Now we own books, toys, and dvds. It offers us some peace whenever we put on the dvd. It's a joy seeing him sing and dance to the Wiggles. We've also taken him to a couple of shows with Wiggles characters. It's amazing how quickly he fell in love with the Wiggles. We dont mind the wiggles but it can get annoying when one of the songs get stuck in your head all day at work. As for Hi-5, that didnt appeal to him much at all.

My two older kids (now almost 11 and 12) loved everything The Wiggles. Two of my younger kids now love Hi-5 and don't get into the Wiggles at all! My nearly-6-month-old also loves to have a look when Hi-5 is on. Yeah, I like to get into it too! Who needs pilates, when one has Hi-5 to dance to? :o)

All 5 of the kids love everything Pooh too, when a Pooh (or any of the others) movie is on, they're all sitting quietly! I'm rather partial to any members of the Hundred Acre Wood myself as well...

We've always been a Wiggles family. Not only do they have great songs which are easy enough for parents to sing, but they are also nice guys who live and sing good values. Their merchandise is thoughtful, they don't promote 'sexy' dresses for young girls, and they are ageing gracefully as rockers.

When it comes to what I want to see on the tv (come on as a mum don't we at least get a little say??) I'd put Hi-5 ahead of the Wiggles because they're songs are quite cute but my boy seems to like them both equally. If I had to choose which one has his attention a bit more I'd say Hi-5 because he really has a thing for pretty ladies. His all time favourite show however is Blues Clues. It is a sure fire way to get him to focus and unwind before bed.

My son (3) really likes the Wiggles whereas my daughter now (5) loves Hi-5. Not sure whether it's because the wiggles are all male or that fact that with Hi5 they look "pretty". Toot toot chugga chugga big red car is a song that my son loves as soon as he hears it he stops what he's doing and starts dancing!

My 3 year old daughter is a Wiggly child... she loves the DVD's and we've been to see them in concert a couple of times. We have loads of daily reminders of the wiggles aside from all of that with all of their merchandise - jigsaw puzzles to wiggly microphones etc... For some reason she never caught on to the Hi-5 scene although not that i would mind if she suddenly decided to either!

My daughter loves dancing to the hi5 cd, but completely ignored the Hi5 concert I took her to. I think wiggles is a better tv show for younger bubs (my daughter is 11 months) as it is more musical, and interactive, whereas Hi5 have more talking/story telling.
I find some songs infectious, and have been caught on numerous occasions singing to ' big red car' whilst driving!

Hi. My nearly three year old loves the wiggles. However when I took him to the concert last month he told me he was naughty and should go home. I convinced him that it would be exciting, however he still spent most of the time telling me he wanted to go home. I put it down mainly to the venue. You can't expect two year olds to sit still for two hours. There was virtually no room for dancing. As for HI5, we don't have it at home as it drives me crazy, however our carer plays it for him and he loves them too. My two year old obviously isn't very picky.

My son doesn't get a choice - I find the Wiggles annoying, so he gets to watch Hi-5. He enjoys the dancing, colour and music - he is 2 and a half. However, he is not a big TV fan (yet) and usually prefers playing with people rather than watching tv!

Wiggles wins hands down, with the different themes, colours and catchy songs my daughter will watch and dance with them and walk out when high 5 is on. And i must admit i know the wiggles songs and dances too but high five just isn't as enchanting.

My son is 7 months old and hasn't really got into either yet. But when he does it will be Hi-5. I can't stand the Wiggles - all a bit over the top for me. I much prefer Hi-5 and since I will be around when he is being entertained it will be Hi-5 all the way!

What he is really into is an interactive DVD and toy made by Tiny Love called MAGIQ. It has great songs and teaches hello/goodbye, shapes, colours etc. Can't take his eyes off it when I put that on for him!

The wiggles annoy us to the end. Very babyish. We all prefer High Five here in this household

The boys all are out of high 5 now though so they love the cartoons on foxtel cartoon network channels

Im with you Lisa, i find the Wiggles very patronising and their spin off programmes are worse!

I also quiery why my 3yo would want to watch guys who older than me jump around and treat...

We saw them in concert in december, not patronising.
we were right in the front seat and Murray & Geoff were so down to earth, make little conversations with the people in the front row.

No they may have a lot of money, I think they have been a great contribute to our small kids.

i am a mum of 2 boys i have seen hi 5 and i think it is inappropriate for kids as the girls dance in skimpy clothes might be ok for the dads to gork at thats about it

You will find that although the girls may have mini skirts or crop tops, they always have leg ins and singlets underneath.
If your husband is into gorking at the young girls i think it might be HIM that has the problem!
The Wiggles are a bunch of middle aged men who patronise kids to death. They are as old as most kids grandparents (and at least one is a grandfather). My girls have no interest in old men talking to them like they dont understand anything. (wheres jeff...oh hes standing NEXT TO YOU. Oh hello captain feathersword... lets all say hello captain feathersword YOU JUST DID YOU MORON)
Having said that they are better than some ... in the night garden where the characters just repeat their own names as vocab. and all of their associate programs telly tubbies etc etc.
Treat your kids like an idiot and youll produce an idiot - treat them with intelligence and intelligence is exactly what you'll end up with.

Hmm appears to be a touchy subject for me !! :)

I don't think at all that their clothes are skimpy and I think it is appropriate for all kids. It teaches them how to express, interact, sing and all the rest of it which at the end of the day gives them confidence and isn't that what we want for all our kids?

My son is 1yr & loves the wiggles. I think it's the tone of their voices that is appealing. Hi-5 is very high pitched at times.
Personally I love dancing around to Justine Clarke's songs that feature on ABC kids. I am on the waiting list @ target to get her new CD!!!!
