Poor Man's Pizza

A quick easy snack, or meal for young kids.

Cut the crusts from your bread.
Flatten with rolling pin or bottle!
Toast ONE side only in grill.

On UNTOASTED side spread with Tomato or BBQ sauce. Add a slice of ham & pineapple, slice of peeled cheese and put under grill until cheese is melted and slighlty brown. Serve!!

You can use any toppings of choice really. This can also double as a quick snack for unexpected guests. It's ready in 5 minutes and my kids LOVED it. It meant they each got exactly the toppings they liked!

Geez, folks, this really IS a great column! The only things that spoilt it were those two snobs, zzrigrant and baggage. BASTARDS!! (Sorry Ladies!) Who do they think they are?
I really loved some of your suggestions and would be Honoured to try them myself. I have a few ideas of my own, but, right now I don't want to hog the column.
Keep up the good work, look after each other (GIVE THE SNOBS HELL!) and I really look forward to reading more here.
Yes, my mouth was watering! I haven't had Lunch yet! By the way, I'm having my Spaghetti Bolognaise for Dinner tonight. I'd love to read your versions, and swap you a few simple versions of my own, if anyone's interested.

Hi Shay-Dee,
I am here in your Defence, along with a few others. I think your idea is BRILLIANT. Its good to know not everyone is a FOOD SNOB!! I hate snobs and I just LOVE giving them hell. They're just so damned pretentious, aren't they?

Here's a good one for you! Not so much a Pizza, but a Toastie or two. These should really hack them off, aye? I hope you have a Toaster Oven.
Butter two slices of Bread. I prefer wholemeal.
Arrange some slices of Onion on each slice, and add some slices of Tomato. dust with a little MASTERFOODS Italian Herbs, a little salt and Black Pepper.
Cut two slices of EDAM Cheese off your 1kg Block of Mainland, Rolling Meadow, Budget, or whatever brand, and arrange on top of the slices.
Place under the grill and Toast until; nice and golden.
Enjoy with a little Tomato Sauce.
Dessert? Try this!
Butter two slices of Bread (Spicey Fruit Loaf if possible)
Peel, half and slice one Banana and arrange slices on bread.
Dust with a little Raw Sugar or Castor, and a little Cinnamon or Nutmeg.
Cover with two slices of cheese and grill until golden. Serve with Ice Cream or Whipped Cream.
Savoury version?
Use Wholemeal or White Bread.
Put slices of HAM on top of the Banana before adding the cheese.
YUMMM!
There's more, but I'll tell you all later.
Enjoy! Oh, and Please let me know what you think of them? Ta! The Food snobs can just simply get stuffed, unless they did it literally by actually trying it themselves and enjoyed it.
NOTE to Food Snobs!
NOT everyone knows how to cook, and from what I've seen here, there are Good Honest People here who just want to learn, or get a few pointers from friendly people who also enjoy Good Honest Tucker. Sure they may have an idea like "Poor Man's Pizza." So what you don't like it? Have you actually TRIED it? Its simple! Its Honest! Its TASTY I'm going to try it myself!
THANKS Shay-Dee! Nothing SHADY about that!

I did this when I worked in a country pub for Friday night snacks. Seriously appreciated. Also when ingredients were scarce simply toasted 1 side, genoursly sprinkled other side with parmesan and grilled. Another winner.

Another good one is pitta breads! You can cut them in half if you are feeling really tight, but mine love pitta pizzas with any type of topping. We do ketchup with herbs and black pepper and then whatever is in the fridge - ham, salami, capsicum and then cheese xx Yum x

how easy for kids to do their own

My Miss 2yo loves some pasta with a chopped avocado & some grape tomatoes (I cut them in half so they don't squirt all over the place when she bites into them), she'll tear her own fresh basil and loves to squeeze a bit of lemon over the top. 10mins tops!

I think if you let kids help out or do a little thing (like just tearing the basil or squeezing the lemon) they're more interested and more likely to eat it because they've contributed. Like your pizza, its simple (I buy packaged pasta), its clean & its healthy - nothing wrong with that!

Another idea is to almost slice through lengthwise a Polonie or other precooked sausage so it is butterflied and then to spread some sauce along the length top with grated cheese and grill

I used to do something similar but didn't flatten the bread. Great idea.

Another topping - tuna, mayonnaise and grated cheese.

Grated cheese, beaten egg and whatever else you fancy!

Not a new idea, you can put your pizza toppings straight on toast, with some grated cheese on top and put it under the griller. A great idea when looking for something different for lunch, and the kids love them.

As a base, I often use pita bread...quick & DELICIOUS!! ;)
I always keep some in the freezer so it is on hand for a yummy, fast meal!

We do this regularly and the kids love it, but we don't cut the crusts off. We usually put the bread under the grill and lightly toast on one side first, then flip them over and add the toppings and grill. Our kids don't like pizza base all that much, so they are happy to eat it when it's served on bread. We often just do sauce cheese and olives as we all like that.

Although convenient, it does sound too good eating squashed up bread with toppings. I would much prefer a toasted sandwich or a 'pizza' made with pita bread.

  • 13th May 2010 10:27am

I use pita bread if I dont have the 1 1/2 hours I need for true pizza dough. But I have alos used English muffins, cut in half. They are also great for kids parties as the size is just right for little hands.

You can also try using lebanese bread as the pizza base - handy and inexpensive.

I think it's a great idea! Simple, cheap, fast and can definitely see it a hit with kids. Nice one Shay-Dee!

Oh I got another treat that's easy to prepare. Homemade nachos in minutes. :)
Preheat the oven to 180C. Lightly grease an oven pan. Grab a 200g pack of corn chips (plain preferably) and sprinkle all or as much as you want. Coat the corn chips with a layer of salsa (mild, med or hot) and a layer of Mozzarella cheese (or cheddar). Put in oven for about 10 minutes, maybe less (corn chips toast and burn very easily). Take out of oven, add guacamole if you wish and enjoy! A snack for a group in less than 15 minutes. :)

Love your ingenuity...especially adding the kidney beans, great idea...both healthy and nutritious. Definitely creative, quick and easy.

Thanks,
It's nice to have something you say be acknowledged and appreciated. Happy to be of help. I'm vegetarian so the idea of adding kidney beans came from that plus wanting it to be more filling, and when you add the salad on top it makes for quite a balanced meal, plus simple and quick to put together.
Thanks GoBears

Firstly, agree and support all the comments you needed to make in your defence. This is a snack idea and was obviously only intended as that, obviously proper pizza dough might taste better or be more filling but then also takes longer to prepare, so not necessarily about being lazy, more about lack of time from what I could tell.
Anyway, wanted to add that when doinjg the above idea for nachos sprinkle some kidney beans (tinned, rinsed) for protein to make healthier, and then while cooking in oven quickly chop up some salad of choice, lettuce, cucumber, fresh tomato etc, then can put this over the top once cooked. Really tasty this way, healthier and more satisfying, plus the freshness of the salad added really balances everything out and is also more sustaining. Give it a go! Enjoy!!

Hi CaptainSlog. Great suggestion about using residual heat, especially will the power companies jacking up prices, cheers! The toaster oven would be just as effective, hope it all worked nicely. :)

When you put your Oven Pan in the oven, turn the heat off and just use the residual heat. Its only going to be in there for, as you said, ten minutes, so, the fierce heat should do the job nicely.
By the way, it sounds really delicious. If try it, I'll use my Toaster Oven. What do you think? It shopuld work in that. Surely?
Happy Cooking.
