Technology and online is great if you understand what you are doing but for some people it is just to **** confussing, so they refuse to learn and keep up with the times of technology and online usage.

Worse than that are the people who want to do some complex or highly skilled task but refuse to learn how to or practice because "the technology should do it for me".

Personally, I see no reason to "keep up" for the sake of it. If what you have does the job why change?

I too have taught myself to use the computer and go online. When I started it was so confusing and I made lots of mistakes. The more a person goes onto the computer and spends time using it the better they will become. The Internet is another thing. I found If I went into something and I didn't understand it or it wasnt the right thing, just go out. It does get easier as the time goes on. I have now been online and using a compter for about 6 to 7yrs. I love it and find I can help family and friends now. That's a good feeling to be able to help them. Keep at it and you may surprise yourself

I agree and the way that things are changing, it is very hard to keep up. About all I can do is read...

I spend hours every day on my pc,most times not sure of what i`m doing.
Maybe, being a long retired electrician has not helped as I need to know how things work.ultra confusing. Also I am self taught and now realise I am the world`s worst
teacher.But by crikey,I love it.
I should have started with the basics but I jumped right in to the deep end and I`m to proud to give up now,so I sneak to the library and read Dummies for etc.
cheers

I would be lost without my computer. I started really using it after I was diagnosed with an illness my silly Specialist decided he was not going to tell me about as I would panic and throw myself under a train.
It was incredible, here was this man telling me I more than likely & almost positively had this serious illness but I was not to discuss it with anyone or go home and read about it in the Womans Weekly.
I would have been better to have read about it in the Womans Weekly as the information would have been upto date. I went to the Public Library, there reading about it I did freak. I was told I would be lucky to live 5 years. The information was so wrong, so out of date.
After going on the internet, I found support groups and after that able to get information for the Library LOL. I also changed my specialist.
As years have gone by I have adapted my life because of other medical problems to shopping online, this I do to an enormous degree. I am disabled now but still want to organise as much as I can & as I used to for such times as Christmas.
At Christmas with 7 grandchildren, my own children their "partners' we have a huge family gathering, so I still love having all the presents under the tree as I used to All the presents, my own clothes, things for the house all come from the internet so it has helped to cope with my disabilities

Yes, oh yes. The Computer and the email and internet have really been a blessing to me in my retirement. Accessing up to date articles, online shopping for meals, books, clothes and now a Kindle has eased my life of chronic pain. A G.P.S. in the car is wonderful. Shopping, which I have always hated, has shrunk to a minimum. Videos from the local library make visits to the cinema redundant.

I so agree. Having the internet and now kindle has simplified my life as I have chronic pain. Shopping online can be very satisfying. It helps me keep my independence and keep contacts with...

It is amazing how it helps so much Joany have support, it does not matter where it comes from but having some understand what is happening with you and your life.
You are not looking for pity or sympathy but practical & emotional understanding because they are having to cope with the same or similar problems.
I have 7 grandchildren, carers, nurses etc who al help I like to say Thank You at Christmas. Something small bu thoughtful for all the helpers and the internet helps with all that and the grandchildren. I think their lives are helped because they see I still manage to have gifts for them and not money.
Money is nice but I prefer to show I care by giving something I have discovered they need or want but it is a surprise. It males Christmas and birthdays still special.
All the very best to you Joany, I hope you have a lovely Christmas and life treats you a little more kindly

It helps me keep my independence and keep contacts with friends and colleagues wherever in the world they live. Yet there are many aspects of technology that I would not bother with as I do not feel the need.

I tend to teach myself. It gives you the irits sometimes when you loose something, but then you learn how to get it back and how not to make the same mistake again

I'm not young yet not very old (late twenty's) but i've always been into the internet & computing in general but I still can't master the touch typing thing but find I'm helping a lot of other people with infoe on how to use computers (a basic assistance) as i use public access computers most often (at a local library). but in the same instance I am for ever learning too.

OK heres a real oldie ( 80 )buying in Jen .ahb the wonders of Technology , I look at
the Computer Magazines in the newsagents and shudder , they are all written in a foreign language called Compuspik ! , But the one technology I have total hatred for and raises my blood pressure is the obscene development called VOICE RECOGNITION particularly the one used by Telstra .

Yes you are right it can be confusing. I have taught myself for the last 2 years and I am still learning, but it is definitely the way to go. I wish I could explain that to my hubby as he loves using the net, but he is a stubborn .......If only he would listen to to me occassionally he would be far more advanced than he is now. But I guess it is a lot harder for the oldies out there as they get stuck in their ways and modern technology frightens them. Not me though, I'm all for it.

Ditto jen, sounds like me and my hubby. My biggest problem is asking a question in a forum when looking for the answer to a problem and the terminology leaves me with more questions. Getting the simpler version of the answer is my biggest hurdle but I plod on and don't let it beat me.
I pick my moments when to teach hubby a new or better way to do something as retraining is a battle once they pass 40. LOL
