Movie Ticket Prices

I am appalled at how movie ticket prices continue to rise? I now have to pay more for a bigger screen. Hoyts introduced a higher ticket price for their ‘Extreme’ cinema at Blacktown. I guess Greater Union did not want to be left behind, therfore, renamed their G-max cinemas to VMax and increased the ticket price by $2. Previously both the G-max and the standard cinemas had the same ticket prices.

Also, there was a time when I did not pay extra for ‘3D’ films but nowadays this has become an excuse for charging extra or disallowing discounted tickets to such so called 'special events'.

When will cinema operators stop resorting to such gimmicks and start providing value for money?

As my partner works at our Local (Reginal) Cinema, i understand why the prices go up.
Electricity is a HUGE factor!!! Think of your home bill, can you imagine the bills for cinemas? They can be anywhere from $5,000 - $15,000 a quarter!!!!!
Also staff wages, the cost of the hire of the movies them selves.
I know our prices are cheaper here than in the city because so many people come in holiday time and tell the staff.

i can remember just 3 short years ago when i could go to the cinema with just my allowance and now i need to ask my parents if i want to go, so i just dont go. it's probable because of so many people not going to the snack bar (whick useed to be the main profit) but nowadays with so many people going on diets and the like, the snack bar doesn't get much attention from people anymore.

After reading these comments & being appalled at prices charged in major cities, have to give cudos to the owner/operator of Ballina Fair Cinemas. They have recently added another theatre, have very comfortable seats & the freshest popcorn (not only my opinion but based on comments of friends & family from Sydney) and their prices remain quite low. $8 all day & all night Wednesday with discounts for local RSL club members at all other times. Their regular prices are $12 for adults, $10 for students & concession & $9 for chn, I think our club discount is $2 a ticket when you show your club card, needless to say we still enjoy seeing new release movies on the big screen, can't believe the prices some cinema chains are charging....don't they realise cheaper prices would bring people back to the movies....SHAME on them.

i am also appalled at the prices of cinema tickets. these days i just wait for the movie to come out on dvd just so i dont have to pay $50 for the ticket, popcorn etc. ridicolous!
yes it is louder and a good place to go on first dates etc, but i would rather spend my money on something that will last longer than 90 mins

If you live in the Campbelltown NSW area, you're lucky because the Dumaresqs Street cinema charges $5.50 per adult and $4.50 for children to see a movie. If you go to the morning session, a sandwich and cup of tea/coffee is offered at no extra charge. Lovely cinema and staff. Highly recommended!!!

When will cinema operators stop resorting to such gimmicks and start providing value for money? When everyone follows my lead & stops going to the cinema!
It's so much fun to stroll right by the smell of popcorn at the theaters, come home, pop my own & watch my big screen with BEER! Nobody has their head in my way, there's no stench of body oder, no sticky floors, no dysfunctional projectionist with unbalenced speakers, certainly no babies crying or smart remarks by anyone I don't really love! The price of all your movie tickets would get ya a really big screen at home! & the closer ya git to it, the bigger it seems! Why are you so impatient to wait a year to watch it for cheap through subscription channels or 2 years for free? Gotta date? Break it!

Absolutley! The way movie ticket prices are rising is scandolas!! I remember when it only cost me $5.00 to se a movie! Now whenever I go to see a filmI amcharged a whopping $12.00! This may not seem like a lot to some, but when you are a benneficery like me, this is a hefty sum. I do not like the fact that with the 3D movies you are charged more for you glasses! I really think something should be done about the outrages ticket cosst these days!

We just wait until the movie is out on DVD, there has been times when we will take the kids for a treat, but the cinema we go to doesn't even have 3D which is disappointing.

II agree movie tickets are so expensive. Our local greater union has tickets that are so dear but in capbelltown we have a local cinema where you can purchase adults and childrens tickets for the one low price of six dollars

In NZ Rialto charge between $9.50-$15 (depending on the day) for their tickets. I have 3 children, so obviously we don't go to the movies too often. 4 tickets, popcorn and a drink each can cost up to $85. The prices these days are outrageous.

Hi,are you are member of Optus (ie;mobile, broadband or home phone) as they have what they call Optus Movie rewards where you can become a free member and purchase movie tickets on-line at a discounted price.I have not yet purchased any as I have just become a member but the family ticket option (2 adults and 2 kids) sounds alright.

I no!! my partner and I went a couple of weeks ago as a treat, in the end i think they had a treat, it cost us all up $64. i wish i just stayed home, hired out some dvd's and brought some microwave popcorn. that would have been all of $15.

I only go to the movies if I have an RACQ ticket. If you belong to RACQ you can get the tix from their office for $10 adults/$8 children. Makes things much cheaper.

I agree- we recently went to see "The King's Speech" and while it was a great film it was nearly $50 by the time I've paid for parking, tickets and a coffee. You get a lot of DVD viewing for that! And don't get me started on 3D.......

I tootally agree with all of you so there for what needs to be done is to send cinemers a message and do not go , this will have a two fold action it will FORCE theatre to take notice and maybe force them to look at pricing, If all you are going to do is have a cry about it nothing will get done and prices will just keep going up as for me I hire couple dvd invested in movie room and do my own thing and as for theatre I do not go anymore

One of the perks of getting old is the price of movie tickets with a senior's card $8 at Event cinemas.
The real crime is the price of the candy & drinks. Shocking.
And they try not to let you take your own stuff in.
I always do tho'.

I agree the price of going to watch a movie is utterly ridiculous and totally out of reach for many families. Why would you choose to part with over $50 and then pay even more to get a few treats like popcorn or a drink - when you can hire a DVD for less than $10 and make your own popcorn at home. They wonder why people are not going but never stop to think that the price is just exorbitant and many people now prefer to wait the month or two when the movie will be available to hire anyway. Just another reason people are becoming more reclusive - they simply can't afford to go out and mix with others.

The price of ticket to the cinema, concerts, bands or any entertainment really is too over priced, so do what I do, watch the DVD, buy the CD,, throw a party and make your own entertainment, then you won't have to stress about to be the price. if you have to be there in person, shop the Net, look on Ebay join a Rewards program, join Spreets and the like. Or save up that works too :)

I agree, it's just too expensive to go to the cinema as a family these days!! If we go as a family of 2 adults & 2 kids, plus drinks & popcorn, it's nearly $100.00.... just to see a movie!! These days, either Hubby or I take one of the kids at a time, we just can't afford to go altogther.....

Most of the money made from ticket prices goes to the distributors. The cinemas themselves only start to make money on tickets after a film has been out for several weeks. Cinemas make their money predominantly on concession items, popcorn etc. It's been said before and it's essentialy true that cinemas are mostly candy stores that also show movies.

Absolutely I agree with you, I had to go to the Movies 3D last school holidays with 2 children 10yrs & 6yrs I am a concession holder, cost $48 + popcorn and drinks around $60 ther should be a cut off to what the cinemas charge, it is too high for the family unit.

Go onto eBay and movie tickets can usually be bought for about 50% of the cinema price. Even less if yoiu take the Mondat to Thursday offers.

Cinema operators are never going to provide value for money, and I agree that the prices are outrageous. My boyfriend and I went last month and it was $35 for 2 tickets, and one of those was a student! There are a few cinemas that are cheaper though, there'sone in Brisbane that's $6.50ish for a ticket, but the screen is alot smaller.

It's cheaper to take the family bowling! Bit more fun and interactive anyways don't you think? :)

It seems as though families may as well just wait until it comes out to DVD or go to a cinema that has cheaper ticket prices/independent cinemas.

i'm not a fan of 3D movies and even less of a fan when I have to pay a packet for the ticket and extra for 3D glasses that only work at a particular chain of cinemas. I hope regular movies don't get phased out!

Do you belong to RACQ? You can get Event Cinemas tix for $10 for adults and $8 for kids. Vmax tix are $12 I think. Also for the Gold Coasters there is Nerang cinema. They have cheaper tix than Event Cinemas. I agree about the VMax and 3D, it takes the prices up.

Forgot to say, that you can use your Cinebuzz card when using the RACQ tix and get 10 points per movie (100 points to get a free ticket).

You need to join the cinema's reward program and you will get a free movie after seeing just 10. They also have cheap movies once a week that you can go and see, $9 or $10. If you want free movies, you need to enter competitions online or via the newspaper.

I know exactly what you mean. I went to the movies with my family the other day - 6 of us in total and tickets alone were $102! Then there is treats etc. How can they keep going up like this! Even on cheap Tuesdays. It used to be $6.50, now it is $9!

I must be a real party pooper as I have not been to the movies for years. i prefer to watch DVD''s as I am more relaxed at home and save money. I used to take my son to the movies when he was little and bought drinks and eats at the corner store which was cheaper than the cinema. I guess that is not allowed now. It was some time ago so the cost wasn't as much as it is today. For outings during school holidays I took my son to the beach, park, museum, swimming hole or pool, for picnics and nature study outings, there were no fun/theme parks in those days. I used to pack our own refreshments which saved money and most outings were free so I only had to pay for petrol costs.

To take my 7 and 9 year old to the movies is prohibitively expensive. We only go once or twice a year because when given a choice of the movies OR a couple of DVD's with snacks and a trip to the swimming pool OR a day out at a park which includes a special lunch and bike hiring it's a pretty easy choice for them . We would love to go more often but it is simply too expensive, especially when compared to hiring DVD's that they can watch at their own pace. adults at kids prices for kids movies is a good start but whatever happened to half price Tuesday and other incentives to get bums on seats? Do they only want the wealthy to go the cinema?

The minimum you will pay on Tuesday is $10. They have been bumping up the Tue ticket prices by 50c every 6-12 months.

you are doing well to pay $10.00 on a Tuesday night. We use to pay that back in the good days, now it's $12.50, well it was the last time we went, which was nearly 6 months ago. So I expect it has gone up again now.! It's all about "greed", everything is just going up & up, ... but not our wages, ... well mine isn't.!!!!
