Mobile phone cameras - useful or just flashy?

Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates 95% of the adult population have mobile phones while a much smaller percentage (10%) have the more advanced 3G network enabled phones. Nokia especially have been advertising heavily its 'N' series of phones (pictured opposite). These phones come together with some amazing digital picture and video capture capabilities to rival digital cameras. All of which is easily uploaded and shared online (so they say).

After a recent shopping trip for a new mobile I noticed it was hard to even buy a new phone without a camera/email/calender etc. etc.

I am interested in your views on mobile phones. Should they be all things to all men containing cameras, diaries, email, web browsers etc. ? Personally I like to keep my gadgets separate, mobile phone for calls and video/digital cameras for taking photos and video.

Judging by all the new mobile phones on the market companies like Nokia see this as the future but what do you think? Do you have a phone with a camera/email etc.? If not, would this type of capability lure you to get a new phone? Maybe you are happy just making calls and sending SMS messages?

I like the idea... especially for those special memories you want to preserve but got caught without a regular camera... it is not as good as a regular camera, but still does a great job :)

Its the way the world is heading, why carry more than one device when your phone does every thing.StarTrek communicator come true. The future is now.

I have no doubt that generally this sort off stuff is the future of mobile phones and mobile markets.

For me, all this of basically no use. I don't generally take photo's, surf the internet, listen to songs etc on my phone.

All I look for is that it is easy to use and is reliable when it comes to reception, making calls and sending SMS messages. Some models with bigger buttons would be nice though.

I recently purchased a new phone and this may seem the oddest answer to you all but I have no idea if it has a camera or not. To us it is just totally a means that we can be contacted if anyone needs us, anywhere we maybe and that is all we use it for
I know we can receive pictures as some of our family have sent them to us for varying reasons. I do feel there is too much possibility of them being used to invade another persons "space".
There are teenagers in the family and I notice that photos are sent back and forth for teasing, that has the capacity to go too far and to hurt some-one.
My phone probably cannot take photos I am sure a younger member would have delighted telling me by now. I have to admit I hate the fact when family visit the dratted things never seem to stop needing attention.
One night I was frightened in the middle of the night by this raucous voice shouting. We leapt out of bed to find some-one had left their phone turned on and they had chosen this terrible "call signal"
Yes I need it but refuse to be ruled by it

Have a new Samsung touch phone, and hate it. It is far too sensitive, and it almost has a mind of its own.

I have difficulty understanding why so many people feel the need to be continually connected to the world by phone but once you've got the thing then, like a Swiss army knife, you may as well load it with all the possible applications.

I think that using the internet on your phone on a regular basis is a bit over the top, but i think that when your ph one doubles as a camera and mp3 player, that it saves space, and is great in case you want to take a photo but have forgotten your camera!
my phone has a 2mp camera, and i love it. i can't imagine having a phone without one. i love my phone's camera :)

Was a Nokia user for many years and always happy with their phones. I recently changed to a Samsung and have found it equally as good as the Nokia in all aspects and even better as far as the camera goes. It is slimmer and bit more stylish but does everything the Nokia did. Dont think I will go back to Nokia.

I recently purchased a Nokia N97 and I have to say I wasn't really one for the 'bells and whistles' but absolutely love this phone and what it can do.
The 5 MP camera is excellent for a mobile phone camera. 32GB of memory is more than most Ipods, so that should go a long way!
This phone can pretty much do anything and everything that the Apple Ipone can do...well done to Nokia!

Phones with cameras can be useful as some of the television news items have been supplied by mobile phones with cameras as only source of info. Personally I do not need a mobile phone other than for Emergency situations.... Les Hodgson

I have a Nokia N97, but must admit I don't use all the functions. I use the calendar daily, and like that I can connect to our wifi internet here at home - which comes in handy to check things like the weather first thing in the morning whilst still in bed! :) I don't do video calls or e-mail, but am a biiiiig sms'er! I sometimes send mms messages, and do like the calculator which saves all the sums you have just done (if you did a few during one session) so you can scroll up to see the numbers. I take photos now and again when I am away from my Nikon SLR, but certainly do not rely on it for quality photos, even if it does have a 5 megapixel camera.

Oh, another great thing is being able to charge the phone via USB and transfer "stuff" to and from your phone via the computer. :)

I believe it is another way that telephone companies are trying to get more money out of us. If you can't access the internet, you would not go on. Now, with the new phones it is too easy to jump on line i.e. facebook etc and you get charged for it all. Yes it is a nice idea, but I do not look forward to trying to buy a phone for my children for safety reasons and then try and keep them affordable at the same time.

I think it is wonderful to have so much in a phone. I do not like to cary around a lot of things and with so much packed into my phone it saves me taking my laptop, camera, navigation system video camera and music player. One thing has it all. My nokia has the office program in it as well as the adobe reader so I can catch up on all informatioin and see the pictures and videos, as well as be guided to a new location all on the one piece of equipment........so grateful it is this easy.

I think cameras on mobile phones are extremely useful, especially for those unexpected photo moments. After all, it's not like most of us carry a camera around with us all the time, but most of us certainly have our mobiles with us all the time!!

Although I believe that this is the way of the future where everything is managed by a small hand held device, I fear that there are also some real problems connected to this social phenomenon. I love to take footage of my children and grandchildren and be able to save it for the future but how much these days is recorded that is just irresponsible and criminal?

I tried to get a phone that was basic no way could i find one. the old samsung i have does everything except the dishes and after 3 years i still do not know how to use it. there should be basic models for basic uses, without internet and all the other stuff you need a pilots licence to use. My phone bill has net use on it when i have never been there,I dont want it , but you cannot buy a phone that works in rural areas without it.. Bring back the basics.

Jojo, the basics are long gone. The GSM network is going to be closed sooner or later (and I believe Telstra plans to close its GSM network sooner... 2010-2012) so all the bells and whistles is all you get. That said, there are still basic phones about. Nokia have several which do next to nothing, as do Motorola., and they will only cost you something between $40 and $100 outright

I see that the way technology is going that it will be the future, but I prefer to keep my diary, etc, seperate from the phone , I don't like to store too much info on my phone other than the basic contacts and using it for sms and making calls, just imagine the upset if you were to lose the phone with all your info stored on it the thought is scary.

The more technology being advanceed, the more people seeking for the simplicity. It's just the edge of left and right, where you want to be balance or choose the 'middle' way.
I personally rather to have a mobile phone just to make a phone call or send a message.
However, having a camera can sometime be handy though.
For example, taking a photo of an injured person in the accident and send to someone who can recomment for the first aid, or save a photo of the damage as a record.
I think it's not so much about how technology being developed but how smart the person is to be able to manage thier own life.

I think it would be good to have a very basic phone, just for safety. without internet etc on it especially for some elderly people who need it for safety, but find modern technology daunting when there is so much to take in.

I definately think that mobile phones are becoming way too flashy these days. I believe that phones should be just used for making calls and texts. communication. however it is sometimes really helpful to have a camera phone for any random occassions arrising that may require one or two photos to be taken. I believe that the phones these days need to be toned down but not stripped of everything.

I myself use items seperatley as its easier for me,so yeah a phone for chatting ,camera for photo's and a computer for emailing. Why is it these companies put all this syuff in phones nowdays ? Is it giving them more imformation that they should not have?

I love that camera feature on phones as it's great to take spontaneous photos. The quality on phones these days have come a long way. As far as emailing, not for me, I would much rather use the computer for email and internet use as rates are more competative. Also I prefer a larger screen.

I do not own a mobile and find that they are very intrusive. The people are forever taking photos of each other in inappropriate
times or places. A mobile would be extremely useful for a very busy and important person but some of the drivel I overhear is
incredible. No a phone should just be a phone, what is wrong with using a camera they come in very small and handy sizes now so that is ot an excuse. It seems to be more Bragging rights "my phone does this that and the other" that gets people to buy them.

Like kids in a toy store, they want whatever is in fashion at the time.

I have one of these phones and I am really impressed by the camera but not the video as such, the camera is great at picking up the sharpness and provides us with a decent photo for that moment in time.
I must say that it doesnt replace my digital camera but is very handy to have around.

I have a fairly basic mobile but it still has camera, text and a few other things, personally I don't like having all these things together but as a business owner I can see the uses for the camera and web browser. What I really object to is what people are doing on their phones while driving, walking, riding and the other day I saw a JOGGER texting while running (almost into a parked car!) Its the safety issue that really gets me.

From my experience of owning a Blackberry Bold i love that it can do all my web surfing, photos and emailing on my phone. I regularly travel for the day use to take my lap top, blue tooth device, phone and digi camera. Security at the airports would just love me at the xray, no so much the people behind me. Simplifying al these devices into my phone is the answer for me. I don't need some 7 mega pixel camera for what i do and unless you're a photogragher who does? for that matter you wouldn['t be using the phone camera anyway. I state that the phones of today are tools and thus deemed very useful.

I do have a Nokia with a camera phone. 3.2MP, it's just enough i'd say. 5mp probably would be right size for what you like to do with pictures. But i couldn't live without my camera, i use it more than my compact Cannon camera! This is basically because i always have my phone with me and therefore always have my camera with me. I only take my proper camera if i know i want to take photos.

I think it is very useful, as hardly any one has a camera with them all the time. If you have one on the mobile, it is most of the time with you. You never know when you do need a picture taken in a hurry, on the spot. It happen to me on some occasion, for safety and evidence reason, which I could not have done with out my phone camera. I am glad I did brought on with a camera, when I had to have my phone replaced.

Why do we need camrea etc.?
Why not just make a mobile phone that can actually make phone calls?
These types of capabilities may be really good for some of those that lack skill.
As a mates daughter siad when we had a minor emergency and a mobile phone was produced and the owner said that 'It takes wonderful pictures' she said 'Tis a shame we can not use it to make a phone call!'
I realise th at so-far as MacQuarrie Street is concerned NSW stands for Newcastle Sydney Woolongong, and if anyone does live ther they do not count. The dullwitted politicians that inhabit Canberra have a similar understanding, The civil servants that we once had were replaced by publis servants these in turn have been replaced by government employees, The structures that engage such persons have lost the meaning of civility and seritude, the government employees are merely interested in collecting their wages and nothing more.

Most of the technology offered is just software, to make a cut down phone would end up costing more. They mass produce the phones, the car industry has problems because there are too many models, phones could go the same way if people get too particular.
Just don't use them, although I have used my mobile as a camera on occasion. Picture of a piece of furniture to show my wife, my grandson has a funny moment etc. I DON'T text them or transmit them, this is where people get caught, GOTCHA says the telco.

Each person has their individual reason why they would buy a phone with or without all the gadgets. Personally, I like the fact that I can take the odd photo, listen to the radio, and even send email. I do sympathise with those who want a no frills phone though, and I think there is still a large market out there for them. This is all my mother-in-law needs, and she often gets all flustered when she touches the wrong button and all sorts of things start happening. Do not loose the gadgetry, and bring back the basic phone with large buttons too.

Kumar,

the photos are blurry because the exposure time is long and the camera moves a little while the shutter is open. The tiny little flash on these things cannot put out much light so it's pointless trying for anything more than about 6 feet from you. You can try this out for yourself photographing things from a variety of distances - I found the above 6 feet was about the limit.

Focus is not helped by Nokia being a bit optimistic about how long an exposure can be handheld. If you want better, you have to use a more powerful flash which means a real camera.

Don't blame the labour movement or the political correctness brigade (who I've never actually encountered outside of people ranting about them...) for the demise of quality, mate. Blame the consumer who doesn't care that they are buying cheap, plastic rubbish made wherever labour costs are lowest by people working for starvation wages. You might want to add the marketing guys who have convinced the punters that the existence of a feature is all that counts, not how well it works and the PR types who maintain it's better to fix something under warranty than to make it right in the first place.

I'm starting to rant myself, so I'll just add that other than the causes, I agree with you 100%

Decide first what you features you want in a phone and then go shopping. If its not important to you dont pay for it. Nowadays you can't find a phone without radio - though Ive never used it - its not convenient if you have to carry ear phones around too! But if a camera is not important to you then dont buy a phone with a fancy one. There will probably be a camera on the phone anyway, but if its only a 2MP then you arent paying for it - its just a standard feature. It was important to me as I dont have a digital camera. So I got a phone with an impressive 5MP camera. Better than the i-phones 4MP camera! My phone also has MP3 capabilities so may download some tunes, but wasnt important to me so didn't get a phone with the huge memory necessary to truely appreciate this function. My phone came free on a 3G $29/month cap deal from Vodaphone with $150 cap. So was a great deal. Has a touch screen and in funky metalic pink! It my new toy and I love it!

Cost? Nothing above ordinary is my rule. I won't buy phones, I wait 'til the contract is up and then negotiate. If your telco understands how the game is played, it's pretty wild what they'll give you to sign. If they don't understand, pay 'em monthly while you find someone who does.

I'm not having a go at Roger, but phones rival cameras only for the very cheapest cameras and only on spec not capability. They can do the job, but not do it well.

I use the camera on my Nokia N95 semi regularly. It's a tool for documentation nothing more. Sure it's 10 megapixel or some such, but the flash is a joke, the focus a lottery and the shutter release takes about a week. In anything but bright light images are very noisey. But the above is true of ALL cheap digital cameras. If I want GOOD pictures I have a DSLR. The N95 is strictly for when there is no better option.

The web browser is crippled by the small screen. I use it but it is no fun. Video is the same: all those telco execs who were convinced that everyone was going to pay a premium for 3G in order to watch video had clearly never used the phones they were selling.

I see the functions of my N95 as a bit like a talking dog: I'm not going to complain about what it says, I'm impressed it does it at all.

I don't mind the camera on my phone. I think sometimes it can be a bit flashy, and I do prefer to use my digital camera, but having a camera on my phone is handy. I use my mobile mainly for messaging and phone calls, and use the alarm function, but that's about it. I don't use my mobile phone for web browsing (as I have a laptop anyway), but I do have a friend who cannot afford a computer and needs email access for work, and he uses the internet on his phone. I wouldn't buy a phone because it has fancy gadgets, but some can be handy depending on your circumstances. It would be good to see a mobile in a store that was simple, though.

Mine is 3G, Nokia 2.0 megapixel etc but I prefer to do my Internet browsing on my PC where I feel safer; less costs, firewalled, more security online threats etc. I am happy simply using my phone for calls, SMS, playing MP3's and games (pass time on transport, doctor's etc) and using the applications like calc, organiser , world time etc. Love the camera and video option for taking candid snaps of kids or when someone is about to do something silly. Oh and the alarm feature for when I hurl occasionally/ usually the bedside alarm clock across the room. I'd be lost without my mobile phone. Haven't thrown that across the room... yet! ;)

my phone has most of these things on it but i had to get this type because i work night shift and needed a radio in so i could listen to particular radio stations for sporting reasons. It is virtually impossible to get a phone with just a radio in it.

I do think it is uesful to ppl who needs to use the features like online web browsing wisely. But to many teenagers I think it's more like something that they can use to show off in front of their friends or something that they can play around with when waiting for the bus or something.

I am like you, I like my gadgets to be separate. I have found in the past that if all functions are in the one place if it breaks down you lose all. I do appreciate having the ability to take photos though if I don't have my camera with me. e.g. I was driving home one day and saw two kangaroos fighting and didn't have my camera, out came the mobile - I didn't even know how to really use it though. I also like to have it for special moments that you don't expect. We always have our mobiles with us but not always our other gadgets.

I think that cameras are the best extra on a mobile phone. The on-line sport that I subscribed to was hopeless - usually unavailable "due to technical difficulties", too ****y to view properly, and poor quality pictures anyway. Internet access might be OK if needed, but I never had to use it - I could always wait until I got my laptop plugged in. But Phone + camera + SMS is a terrific tool.
(I've lost 4 cameras and the rechargers of two others.)

When I got my last mobile phone (over two years ago) at the time I did not want a camera in the phone and I was told quiet bluntly in a store that everyone wants a camera in their phone. I quickly found out that no-one was stocking phones which did not include a camera.

Personelly I find the camera a nuicance, often when I go to use the phone I will hit the button which turns the camera on resulting in wasted time while I turn it off again.

I am the type of person who uses their phone for communication purposes and a camera for photo's.

Would much prefer to be able to source a phone without the extras that someone-else has dicieded that I need.

if you look at it from a person of my age when ever we see a new piece of technology it is exciting at first but because it may be so expensive we just look but think we can never have it. new tech should not be so expensive

Judging by trends mobile phones will soon be doing a lot more than what they are currently capable of.
Everybody will have one and it will store your mobile credit card details that will be released soon that has been currently on trial and a lot more features to come looking for more great things to be jam packed into the mobile phone.

Just heard iPhones in US have just dropped to US$99... changes the game! Watchout Aust/NZ. But I also read the smarts in the iPhones are not that smart and a bit average. So till they get their tech up to 'A' grade specs. There's still movement in the game.

A digital camera takes a great photo a moblile phone camera is not worth using.I have a motorola moblile phone which is a great phone for making phone calls. Yes it has a camera which i used once and the picture did not come out too dark. so back to using my digital Camera.

I bought an iPhone in January partly because I've been an Apple user and appreciator for many years, partly because of the features and because of dissatisfaction with my previous work-supplied Samsung 160 3G phone. I have tried most of the supplied apps but haven't felt inclined to buy any more. I use email and internet when away from my laptop but not by choice - too slow and cumbersome. I have used the camera and find the quality OK but like you prefer to use my Kodak for real photography. One iPhone feature I've used more than expected is the maps/location/GPS - its best function is finding a place and supplying you with address in detail as well as phones. We were travelling from Perth to Margaret River and had to find a winery we'd never been to and had not been given adequate directions - so I searched on the maps feature, found its location and how long it would take etc. That's handy and better than a car GPS. For a long time I held the view that mobiles were just for calls - then I learned how to SMS - since then, why not? If the sky's the limit, why not reach beyond it? Perhaps we are building a new tower of Babel, and we need to guard against hubris - but generally speaking I like the new technology, especially if it helps build a better world.

I do have a camera in my phone but never use it

My mobile does not have a camera but provided the picture quality was acceptable it could prove very useful. I always keep my old 4 MP digital camera in the car to capture that "can't miss" photograph. Provided the camera on a mobile phone was quick and easy to use then I'd use it in preference to getting out my spare digital camera. Build one into the frame of my specs and I'd always be ready.

Mobile phones are just so huge in the world today, everyone has a mobile. I've had many mobile phones with the built-in camera/video/email/web but one day i went out to buy a mobile phone which was just that! a mobile phone only with NO built-in camera/video/email ect and you know, i only found one! i think it was a nokia for $80 and it just was a mobile phone with txt messaging. How amazing that this is the case that 99% of phones today have built-in extras and now with touch screens such as the iPhone and HTC mobiles, what next?

Yes. I would never carry a camera with me but having one on my phone has been very useful. I do NOT play games on the phone, listen to music, use the internet, text messaging. My phone must sync with with my computer for addresses, calander and notes. I like my phone simple, large enough to find (went swimming with my razr in my back pocket-too small and flat to find). The feature I'd like is the old original palm ability to scrawl notes on the screen and store them

simply to say mobile phones with camera's, web browsers, email etc. are common in todays world and as technology is ever evolving this hardware and software on objects that are used daily by such a high percentage of the worlds population is necessary as with technology developing youth and generations to come will need to be interative with these technologies it allows education of it all. it also gives the oportunity to not waste money on other things that will not be an immediate use to us.

I am sorry this is rather out of date? If not:
I am surprised you had trouble shoping for a new phone. I bought my sagen at about the same year or one or two earlier for 70+ dollars. I did not know the phone also have an inbuit camera.
I am yet to use it as a camera. I lost my interest in photos when all my children grown up.
It would have been very usefull a few years back.
Yes, as it is, I am happy just to make calls and sms when I do, which is not very often.

Personally I prefer to have multifunctional mobiles as they save a lot of space but I seldom use the functions included like email or even the camera. However, it really comes in handy when needed. Having said that, I also believe that mobile phone should not be too complex as there is still quite a substantial part of the population who are not that tech savy to make full use of them.

Mobile phones are now a part of life. They on the one hand keep people in touch, but it takes away from sitting down and just having a face to face conversation. In this day and age every one seems to be rushing and you can bet, they have a mobile phone attached to their ear, talk about multy tasking! Ah what ever happened to the good old days when you had to try and find a phone box, do they still exist? Sorry must go my mobile is ringing. Yes they are a necessary evil.

No I do not have a new mobile phone as I don't believe in keeping up with the Joneses or being a Yuppy. My mobile phone is really old it does not have polyphonic tones, no camera no video no nothing , who cares about all the technology available on the phones. As far as I am concerned I don't believe it's neccessary to have all the extras at a great unexpected cost everytime you use them. Me I just have my oldie and though I may not have all the extra modern technology on my phone I don't have the extra hidden surprise costs after all I can still make and recieve calls and sms, who needs all the extra's.

I feel the future, and even now, is designed around the convenience of having a single device that performs all the functions required by the individual. Why not have a PDA, mobile phone, camera, mobile email and anything else you can squeeze in to the one device? Other than the fact that if you lose it, you lose everything, it makes sense to have it all in one place.

I'm of the opinion that if you have to compromise on a specifice technology, then the whole gadget is compromised...
Anything that is quality made is usually a singular use item, never an all purpose item, even Swiss Army Pocket Knives could only be "so" useful. Why not just produce items that are the best of their type, for what they do, rather than cram more "applications" and "usefulness into an ever diminishing product...

Wouldn't it be better said, "Different folks, different strokes?". I love that there are the options of having all the bells n whistles if one chooses. If the benifits outweigh the cost then it's a done deal for most. But I've heard so many people, only recently, talking about how they would like a phone that just takes and makes calls and does SMS's. I agree with them that there should be a bit more emphasis placed on less options on the handset for those that just want to make and receive calls.

Cost is a deciding factor in most peoples' purchase of a phone, for the handset and then for the plan they choose. The business guy doesn't mind the costs incurred so he can browse for news and weather and find a good restaurant in the push of a button. But there are those that just want the basic phone to make basic calls and they want to be charged only for that service.

There seems to be so much on offer if you want more features on your phone, eg, internet, games, cameras, music, diaries etc but there is little shown or advertised about the phone that is just a phone! It's about offering phones that work for the individual, not just what seems to be the most jam packed device known to man! lol. :) Don't get me wrong, I love technology, it's inovated our lives in so many ways that it's hard to imagine life without the advances made so far, in all areas of life. Sometimes though, too much is just too much. The mobile phone issue is like going to McDonalds and ordering a plain burger and like it or not you have to buy the fries and drink as well, whether you want them or not.

I think in the persuit of technological advances for mobile phones, they've lost sight of it's original purpose, to make calls while on the go or just out of the house. Let's see easier handsets produced and marketed for those who just want the basics. :)

My mobile is an LG with lots of gadgets a camera being only one of them.

Why did I by this one? It came with a good plan and I needed a new phone. The battery in the old one no longer kept a charge.

Do I need all the gadgets and the camera..NO.
Have I used the gadgets...NO
Have I used the camera Yes ONCE,I would rather use my digital camera.
I think that we have little privacy in this world as it is and having mobile phones with camera's is eroding this as can be seen a various websites.

Maybe we would be better off with a phone that just makes calls and sms.

I believe that the placement of Cameras in Mobile Phones is only a gimic to sell more phones! they started with VGA and now are trying to squeeze into the Phone the highest Megapixal Camera it can take. My belief is that now with the IPhone and other newer types the sky is the limit for most Mobile Phone Manufactures, the way technology is flying ahead in leaps and bounds we will all be walking around soon with a "Mobile Phone, GPS and Computer" all in the one small unit. From then on I shudder to think what will be done to us next, will it be "Implants".

Ever since the London Underground bombing, I have always had a camera in my phone. Prior to that, I simply couldn't see the logic of it. The only exception to that was when I was working (briefly) for a very large industrial concern, where industrial espionage was a serious risk. An ultra simple Samsung phone from Coles for $39 took care of that. The penalty of having a camera on the premises was an instant dismissal and possible prosecution. Gordo

They are useful for the average person but if you are serious about your photography or whatever these small gadgets don't measure up in quality or required specifications

I have had 2 phones in the last 5 or 6 yrs my last I gave to one of my nephews it was a nokia thingy with a camera and what ever else it had apparently it was very good because my 15 yr old nephew took it. I used the camera quite abit and also the video but then most times I'd forget. Most people in the mature bracket tend to use it for ringing there kids or work but not as a must have flash it at everything kind of tool, it was a very handy alarm clock for me but obviously I didn't have enough friends to text because my nephew has it now and now I get rude phone calls from my friends who can't get me on my mobile:)

With identity theft on the rise I like having a basic phone where I can store phone numbers and the odd diary reminder. I have a full diary/filofax with a lot more information in it but still don't record personal info.
While I like the idea of a blackberry but can't justify the cost when I won't use have the funtions.
Definatley not interested in text banking or the iphone banking link that is currently being advertised.

I have never found the need to have a mobile phone but admit that its getting more tempting as features are added. I am waiting for a phone that projects the internet/video/pics onto the wall and projects a keyboard onto the table

I have a Nokia N95 8GB and bought it specifically because it had a 5MP camera, MP3, web brower etc. My mobile is a core part of my business and my life - so the better the integration, the less strain on my handbag. That said, blogging via mobile phone is a pain - so I am eyeing off a lovely netbook to fill that gap.

i agree the less gadgets in one the better. phones were invented for the purpose of making phone calls Not for game and internet and all that other stuff they come with. I am only 20 yrs old and i find them annoying that they have all these gadget rolled in to one. imagine how older peopld find it all this technologey that didnt even exist when they were my age now comes in one stupid little gadget. most of the time it takes a week just to work out how to turn the damm things on let-a-lone figure out how to make a call on them. i say bring back the standard old phone NO GADGETS NEEDED. cheers Pat

Mobile phone cameras are vital for that unexpected moment when you dont have your digital camera with you. Okay you dont need insane zoom/megapixels, but they are really handy!

I would also like to see a company bring out a phone that you can choose what comes in it. Ie, you get a shell and you can say, i want a camera, a speaker, i want it to be a flip phone, not touch screen...etc...and each thing you can see the price change. Imagine how individual the phones would be!

the problem with mobiles these days you need them to get around for business and personal use and my main concern is that the price is outrageous to buy one and i think thats unfair .... i have the new touch screen ones and they are more difficult to use the run like a computer and it make me sick for the people who are not good with them

Definitely Useful to me
I've been to a few amazing concerts and some places where you just wouldn't take a camera.
Good to have some footage on hand to remember the times

Cameras can be bulky and being a male, i don't carry mine around all the time, unless i'm on vacation.
So always good to have on hand just for quick snaps during the day
or random videos at night

Cameras...

Cameras on mobile phones are essential for the profoundly deaf. These hearing impaired people have the greatest difficulty communicating than any other group. They are visually aware and a photo says so much to them. Video is even better. They can hand-sign, their own unique language, to one another. Very rewarding. Networks should make them free to all registered deaf mobile phone users!

I like my phone to be a phone. If I need to send or receive emails then I will use my computer. The phone that I have has all the bells and whistles on it but are nevewr used. The only reason that I have this phone is because I could not get just a phone, they do not make just phones any more, so we have to pay for all these bells and whistles which I personally will never use.

i think a mobile should be used for what it was intended. a portable phone. excessive use can actually lead to brain tumors or problems at best and the 'flashiness' is exploited by mobile phone companies to attract a larger consumer base.

I have a N91integrated of a camera 3Mp, Mp3 player, email, wap and wi-fi. However I seldom use the email function just because I don't subscribe the Internet WAP with my provider. Actually I can use the wireless network at home to surf the Internet and email but I found out the phone wireless 801g is still slower than my computer wireless adapter. Moreover the phone browser is simple and function improperly to many websites that contain lots of pictures and videos. The phone camera is okay but I prefer to my digital camera. I only use the phone to capture some pictures when I don't bring the camera along. So in my opinion, there may be some attractive features of an integrated mobile phone however the question is whether those advanced functions are desirable when people just want to make a call and send sms but the battery runs out quickly due to the camera and email use. If I can choose I will get a phone just for call and sms, an Apple iTouch, a Canon digital camera and a Sony Vaio laptop. Those can fulfill my demand of a digital world.

While I'd say I don't care about having a camera, it is handy to have one to hand when I'm out and about sometimes. To fight parking tickets for instance! I wouldn't look for it as a feature when buying a phone though. I like my phones to take calls, send sms and synch with my e-mail/calendar. The rest is just for fun.

I have a Nokia N95 and I found the camera (5MP) really useful because I don't have to worry about bringing another extra gadget when going outdoor. Email and calender wasn't very useful for me since i am still a student, but I realised that my cousin (businessman) uses his email quite often when he visited me. As for calender, I don't really use one anyway so I cant really comment about it.

I am not sure a mobile phone can ever be all things to all people but I do like that my BlackBerry can do a lot of things - phone calls, photos, diary, emails. I look forward to the day when there is a gadget like an iPhone that has a much larger memory so I can store all of my music on it (I have a 160GB iPod).

Yes, a camera function on your phone has high pixels and is much more accessible, but while the camera function might seem handy, I find it is a nuisance- it takes up way too much space of my phone memory and the risk of receiving/sending images of an illegal nature are too high these days. I dont understand how the market in general is supposed to improve with this 'blending' of medias. For example,. the iPhone, as a combination of an iPod, phone, camera, diary, notepad and gaming console seems to make every other product on the market obselete. While this might be great business for Apple, it completely tips the scale and forces other products into the shadows.
With cameras and camcorders coming in such small and versatile shapes these days, I cannot see why they cannot be carried around with the phone. There is a less chance of corruption of phone software and does not impede on the phone's memory, whilst still having great photos that can still be transferred to your computer just as easily.
Slightly off the topic,. but my mother just bought my father a GPS for fathers day. It has an mp4 player, calendar, notifications and notepad. It can play movies... can anyone else see the irony in a GPS movie-player? Who is going to watch a movie whilst using a GPS? Why play your mp4's through your GPS (which will affect how you hear your driving instructions) when you can play it in your car's stereo system?
I think this blending of medias for conveniece is getting out of control and other simpler products on the market are suffering for it.

I suppose they will continue to add features to cater for all needs and we just have to try to keep up. It bugs me at times that you have to pay for features you don't use, but have certainly found the camera function handy, especially when O/S in Barcelona when the battery died on my digital camera so resorted to using the camera on the phone. Now I just need to work out how to download the photos to my computer!

It is nice to have many functions in the one device, but the quality of most of the cameras/lenses included in mobile phones is still too poor to replace a proper camera. It seems like phone manufacturers keep adding these kind of features more to differentiate themselves than to really provide additional benefits to users.

Mobile Phone cameras and email on the mobile CAN be useful. For example, my house was recently burgled and the bludgers took my laptop, my video camera and digital camera. As part of the laptop warranty through Dell, they require a colour photograph of the point where the forced entry occurred. So I sued my camera phone and emailed it across.

Yes - all well and good, however..... the extortionate rates that Australian Telco's are charging us, regardless of how great a plan we think we might be on, pale into insignificance when compared with what you can get overseas.

I would rather get a basic phone without all the doodads, as long as it could make and take calls, send and receive SMS and the robbing bludgers reduced the costs of calls and data to a REALISTIC cost, not just something that generates revenue to meet the expectations of shareholders.

I must admit that I wanted a phone with a decent camera when I went shopping for a new one. I like the convenience of having it with me, it makes it easy for me to take photos or videos of my toddler whenever and wherever.
Aside from making calls, texting, using the camera and ocassionally using the alarm and the calculator, I really have no need for the other functions they've crammed into my phone.
Having said all this, I was thinking about getting a PDA recently as being back to fulltime work and juggling a family, the ease of being able to emails without a computer was appealing. Especially now that the iPhone is out!
However, I dont trust myself and think that if I had a PDA I will be checking and replying to emails all the time - I can understand why the Blackberry was nicknamed 'Crackberry'!!

My concern with camera phones and I guess digital cameras in general is how many people actually keep the photos long term. It's very easy to snap away and take the photos on a phone as it's so convinient but I've never kept any of the photos taken on my phone. I love my digital camera and regularly get them printed off to store in my photo albums. Call me old fashioned but I still love to have my albums to look through rather than scrolling through them on the computer. I guess I'm always worried that I'm going to lose them all if something goes wrong with the computer.

I have a Motorola V3x with a 2 mega-pixel camera. I wasn't expecting great things at first but I have been consistently pleased by the quality of images - and particularly the depth of field (the result of the almost-pinhole lens I guess).

I write a coffee blog and have very often used my camera to take photos at cafes. I have not tried printing images from my camera but for online purposes it is usually just fine.

It both simplifies and complicates things. On the one hand, as a parent, you've always got a camera handy. On the other hand, if you lose it, your photos are lost, or when you replace it, you've got a lot of stuff stored on there that you need to save before you get rid of the old phone.
The thing I find really frustrating is the delay from when you press the OK button till the photo is actually taken ... with young children, by the time it actually takes the moment is GONE!! GRRR

Its a technology advancement that's unavoidable ... right now camera's in phones are pretty average but so was black and white television less than 60 years ago! Even mobile phones were average a decade ago and couldn't be used in buildings, on hills or if you were holding your tongue the wrong way.
I work extensively online and as a photographer so if I want to do really good shots I take my SLR with me, but I don't want to carry a bulky camera with me everywhere I go so I love having a camera on my phone. I just accept its limitations and my budget ...
There have been several times where its been extremely useful such as when I'm out shopping - no more surprises for my partner getting clothes he doesn't really like and no chance of my sister and I buying the same pair of shoes or missing out on a sale ;-)
I can't wait until 10MP is standard in every phone, when they come with 100's of gig of memory and can fold out to be a mini-laptop with seamless wireless connectivity. Bring it on!

I value the camera and video function on my mobile phone. I use it to capture and share the moment instantly. Great for kids events when Dad wants to be there but can't. I didn't deliberately choose a phone with all the extra features, my phone just happened to have them and I take advantage of the convenience.

I recently used my camera/email function to scare off a would be attacker. I waved my open phone in his face and told him I'd already taken his photo and one of his vehicle and sent it to my policeman husband. He must have believed me and took off.

I own a Palm Treo750 smartphone on the Telstra 3G network and love it! I am a busy working mum running my own business full time as well as organising 3 teenagers and husband who runs our farm. I use the email and web applications on my phone daily and would be LOST without the calendar, contacts, documents, shopping lists etc stored in the device.
The camera is handy more for reference than actual photo's as the 1.3 pixel is pretty rough compared to my digital camera. The mp3 player is very handy when stuck somewhere waiting. If I had to cart all these things with me separately I'd need a suitcase.
I tell my kids all the time that if I die they better put the phone in my coffin with me and it better be fully charged or I will haunt them. I'm taking this baby with me to the afterlife as it is THAT good!

I think a lot of phones are all things to all men, but most are stronger in one area than others. Eg, I like a phone that is has most of the capabilities available, but is easy to browse the internet and send/receive emails. Other people might like a phone that has strong media playback, or a good digital photography.

Hi there, I have a nokia 6110 which has a built in camera, however since purchasing it I can honestly say that I've only once ever used the camera, I think things are just getting silly with all things being included in one product, nothing beats taking a proper photo with a proper camera, and reality check, I think most people apart from teenagers don't even use the camera features on their phones.

I live in north east Victoria and have a new G Samsung phone. All I want is a phone that works no matter where I am. As it is now it's pathetic. I open my phone to be greeted by 'no service' or a ratty voice I can't understand. I thnk all phones should be just that - phones and be satellite connectd so they work everywhere. Isn't that what phones are for?? It won't be long before we have implants in our brains in the space that we don't presently use - 90%+. I don't like what we are turnng into. We are supposd to be human. Has any one seen the ad where 4 mobile phones were placed aerial to aerial and had a popcorn kernel placed in the middle. All phones were dialled at the same time and the popcorn kernel popped! It's a worry.

I love a camera phone, when girlfriends go to concerts they can send and you can view the 30 seconds of video footage. I love my camera phone, I have a 5 megapixel camera phone and love it. The pics are clear it would be great though if the pictures could be converted to normal size without losing the goodly detail. Can't wait until the phone can act as a camera and not be a flashy accessory on my phone - I heard that the Iphone is like that - is it??? Because it is currently cheaper than my Nokia phone

i'll be the first to admit that until recently i was a vocal proponent of mobile phone cameras being nothing but a gimmick... and let's face it, on my 3 year old Sony Ericsson K700i with VGA camera, it was.

then a few months ago i upgraded to a Nokia N95 complete with a 5 megapixel camera and since then have been singing its virtues to whoever will listen. not only is the quality great but the phone allows posting to websites via its browser and/or direct upload to flickr. yes, it's still not quite at the level of my regular 7 megapixel sony digital camera but it's close enough for the majority of shots.

Well as a teen, i love mobile phones, the more things it can do the better :)
Prices are annoying and you can't really use the internet when you are only on prepaid, but if you have the money and get like a plam that has like unlimited downloads for it.
I reckon camera phones are so handy and fun.
Ever not taken a camera somewhere because it's too bulky to fit into your pocket?
Ever wish you had a camera to take a picture of something awesome?
Well if you had one on your mobile then you can snap away until your heart is content, or memory card.
Make sure you get ones with at least 2 megapixels, VGA cameras are crappy.

I live up in north east Victoria in a little tourist town called Beechworth. There are quite a few hilly areas around the town. I have a Samsung Next G phone and still can't make calls from most areas. In a nearby town called Stanley I can't even make a call. In many areas the only nunber I can ring is 000! I'd like to have a phone without all the crap one can get on them nowadays and just be able to use my phone to make a normal phone call when I want to. Mobile phones are evolving into mini computers and have seem to have lost their original function - to call someone when you need to!

i only use my mobile for calls and SMS. and as an alarm clock occasionally. I still like muy old Nokia 3315 which was basic and did all I required. I only replaced it because Telstra told me that it would not operate on their 3G network,( which was not true)theSamsung A412 camera phone that replaced it was good except for all the extraneous abilities . The screen cracked after two months and they would not repair it under warranty so I have ended up with my old Nokia! I did like and used the camera though. Easier than carrying the Digital camera around Sirdes Tweed Heads

i like them as carrying around all thesae things all the time is bulky and they have to be rady to go
i use my phone for downloading songs and taking pics
it does come in handy when you don't expect to go somewhere and see something wotrth shooting
battery life is left out though and you have to recharge more because of these devices
if it stuffs up or dies you lose evrything ,say you drop in river
if you had separate then only one would be lost and battery life would be better and you coukd get motrre songs better quailtiy pic etc
it is up to each use and what they want out of the evice and what they will use it for
i have a phone with a camera email etc its cool and i use it al ot
i would only get a new phone if i liked the lok of it and it had things on their that i thought neede updating like camera or emai letc
everything would be faster and you could downloaD STUFF more . like the new sony it has 5mp camera and 8 gig for whatever you want to put on their very cool better than nokia
you have to realise that nokias camera are not as good as sony because of the zoom capabilities
if you shoot people vs if you shoot moving images like video
if you don't want all this stuff just buy a cheap pre paid phone for calls and sms only its not for everyione

I love the fact that my phone takes video and still pictures. I have an eight month old and my parents-in-law have been caravanning aroung Australia (recent retirees) since he was three months old. They have been able to keep in touch and see his first crawling, his first solids, his "talking" and generally watch him grow and develop. I'm so grateful to be able to keep them in our lives in such an intimate way that would not be possible without this technology.

I personally think that the camera being in your mobile phone is just an eassy way for more perverts to invade other peoples personal space. But if used properly they can be very useful especially when you have a young family (which i have) they help you to catch thimgs you normally might miss with out the camera being in your pocket all the time.

I hate phones that are overloaded with crap. As I was forced to buy a new 'G" phone, I made the sales girl immediately remove all the useless crap off the front screen and I only have two things I use. phone list and sms. I set up a file called useless shit and sent every other programme that I could move into this. I have a camera and a computer. I do not need a tiny contracption that comes when handling it and that does things that a neurosurgeon only uses. the simplest phone for me is the best. I run a business, and for this purpose only, do I have a phone. I want one I can use to make and receive calls. that is it. so down with all this useless junk that makes using a phone bloody complicated. And for those who think I am an old foggy.... well, I use a computer and I am very competant with one. and I am continually updating my skills.

The packaging of features into mobile phones relies on the users accepting lower quality individual components as a trade-off for convenience. No one would go into a store and purchase a 2mp camera, a tv with a 2.5 inch screen, a small capacity mp3 player on their own, but package them into one convenient device and we seem to run to buy them. If you took out all the fancy gadgets, the phone would probably last 3 weeks without charging, but people will buy whatever is going in their price range. Are we buying them because that is all that is available or because that is what we need in a phone?

I like mobile phones with camera because sometimes you are somewhere and no camera with. You regret that you missed opportunity to take photo! Why? I have such a phone and have never used the camera facility. I bought it as it has excellent buttons. I have seen photos from these products and they are very poor. If i want a photograph, I have an excellent camera. They rate highly on a long list of least useful inventiomns

I have a mobile that combines a camera, email and other items and I find that many of these applications I dont use but they are there if needed. I do find the camera exceptional and have used it often. Its convenient to use the camera as it is on mr at all times whereas my digital camera comes out when I go sightseeing only.

i think they are mostly just flahy. Alot of the newer functions in cameras i wouldnt use anyway. They are great to fiddle with like a new toy of course. But for functionality all i really use it for is to call someone or sms.

I have always been happy with a simple Nokia phone to send messages and make calls. But then I carried a little digi camera around in my handbag to take the odd snap shot or video. Now I have my professional SLR camera I am thinking that I might actually want to be able to take snappy shots on my mobile, or the occasional video. Might be a hard choice.

I love my mobile phone but I see it as a tool in an emergency or for use where there are no land line phones. The use of the mobile phone for a woman especially in the night time driving alone is essential.

I myself don't own a mobile phone mainly because i find i can't hear the person at the other end. The mobile is the thing of the future the old ways of the red telephone box in the suburbs is phasing out with the coming of the lout syndrome that seems to be evident in our society these days. The mobile has certainly got a place in the modern world whether it has basic features or all the prestige features,i just wish that people would use them as they were intended to be used NOT while trying to control a lethal machine such as a car on a busy highway. I fly in a country that is still very sensitive to people taking pictures of the war machines lying around and also the squalor and poverty of their capital city so the camera on my phone is very useful in that I appear to be making a call. To get shots of people being people. Also it is one thing less to get stolen, I only have to worry about the security of one device but in fact it's two. The email facility is useless to me but the camera/phone invaluable. I have taken memory photos (I'm not into photography for any other purpose) that are irreplaceable. Transferring the pictures to my laptop for storage and to send home is simple easy and convenient with the bluetooth technology in both phone and laptop. Definitely a great combination.

I have a camera phone, but I've found that my particular camera doesn't take great quality pictures, especially in darker lighting. I think its ok to have a camera phone as long as the camera doesn't take up too much memory. I agree that separate gadgets are generally better. The gadgets tend to work better separated. I haven't taken one decent picture off my phone and although the camera lured me I hardly use it. I don't think its worth paying more for something flashy after having done so. Just choose something simple that will work.

I do think that the idea of putting a camera in a phone was absolute brilliance. The camera's are small and convenient and because most people carry their phones with them at all times, it's with you wherever you go.
While the camera shouldn't be intended for professional photographers or for blowing up on the computer and printing out, I do believe they are highly useful when either a) the camera has been left behind or b) you didn't think you'd need a camera where you were going.
With a camera in your phone, you can take photos absolutely anywhere! I used to have a phone that had a 1.3MP camera (which was pretty much useless) and recently upgraded to a 2MP camera phone with expandable memory to 2GB (1000's of photos).
Advice for anyone in the market to upgrade their old 'brick' phone and wanting a new phone is to definitely consider a camera phone. But, stay well away from VGA camera (the quality isn't even good on the small phone screen), instead, try to go for at least 2MP - this resolution is perfect for phone screens to show/send to family or friends. I do think it is a bit ridiculous to fork out over $800 for a phone with a 5MP+ camera - I would just stick with the digital camera for that kind of quality.
So to sum it up, camera phones are convenient and really only practical if the photos are left on the mobile or to send in picture messages to family and friends while to buy a 5MP+ camera phone would be crazy. You can buy a 2MP phone and an 8MP digital camera for around half the price.

I currently have a phone that is 3G enabled. I'm a bit of a tech-head, so all of the media extras are great for me. Taking the odd snapshot of something I wish to 3D build later, grabbing a texture off a wall or just having a video call with my partner is all a bonus for me. Although, I do know people such as my father who would just be happy with any old brick he could call off and send a text. I guess it all depends on the user, their lifestyle and in my case profession.

I used to think that the camera in a mobile phone was just an extra bit of "geek" to lure the technoboffin but now the resolution has come up they can be a useful tool in the workplace - especially for the out of the office types - as for the radio etc never used it - never wanted to - my ipod does the job and means I can ignore the phone!!!

Frankly if I want to take photos I will use my camera - Why is it so bloody hard to get a reasonable phone without a built in camera ,
There are plenty of workplaces and businesses who do not permit photography on their premises - not that the results from a camera phone could be considered high quality photos.

Personally, phone cameras are not the thing for me. If im going to take photos I've got a really good digital camera. My cell is a means of keeping phone contact with people not storing pix. I do see the benefits if you've left the camera at home and a "moment" is taking place, yip sure a pix cell is great. Overall, they;re too flashy for me.

I have two phones, one a company phone, the other personal.I use the camera function for anything from pxting shoes, clothes etc to a friend or my daughter for their opinion, also when partner has been sent to the supermarket....when he texts me which product,I can pxt back a pic of item from the pantry etc.Means I have a reasonable chance of him coming home with the correct one.Take pics of my roses and send them to Mum who is an expert on all things horticultural.Otherwise the most used functions on my phone would be reminders, texts and the alarm.

  • 29th Feb 2008 01:16pm

I recently purchased a new cellphone because my old one didn't always ring and the viewing window/texting was very small.

The new one comes with camera and facilities to do email and other things. I prefer not use either one of these as I have a digital camera/email elsewhere. However I do like the ease of use since my pal helped me work though the items. I like the way it is set up that as soon as it rings; I flip it open I'm with the caller. I've used the organiser alarm. I mainly use it for texting. It has another feature that I like a quick way to put it into silent mode.

I prefer unfold flip open as I want it to fit in my pocket and I don't want to have to put it into lock mode.....in case of buttons being pushed. I'm not very good with tiny buttons as I have a hand tremor but I'm finding this one much more user friendly than my last beastie or is it I'm becoming used to this smaller portable technology

Camera phones are ok when there's no other option or for low res applications like web stuff or video calls, but I think people rely far too much on them for family snaps. Get a decent point & shoot, they're not all that expensive! The current mobile phones are a classic case of 'Jack of All Trades and Master of None'. I have a phone with a few gadgets, but I don't use them. Take a photo? Real camera please. The only digital still cameras a phone might rival would be a cheap nasty one. As for email... GRRRR. I hate SMS, let alone having to send an email using those pathetic little buttons, and I'm sure I'm not the only one with fat fingers.

I have had a few phones with cameras in them. At first they were a novelty, yes the picture isn't bad. But it's limited. If you want good pictures, you need a good camera. If you needed to take a photo of a car accident or something important that just happened it would be useful. I would rather have a phone that sends and receives phone calls and text messages. Can store phone numbers and the minor things like that. But downloading Music, Films, News etc. It's not needed. The price would come down without all that junk.

Roger, yes I have a Nokia phone with camera/email. I purchased it as an upgrade but find that I rarely use these facillities. I work in an area where we are not permitted to have camera phones because of security in the building so having the phone on me really defeats its purpose. I would prefer to have a phone without the camera but as you say it is difficult to find one like that. Also I feel that they can also be an invasion of privacy as you can sometimes be unaware that someone is using a camera phone when you least expect it.

I do not like mobiles. I think they are so intrusive and they realy show how people today have disregard for manners. Having said that, I have tried to see what they are all about and soon after shopping around I just give up. I don't mind the choices that technology offers in the actual units - it's the bewildering display packages and plans that bug me.

i think that if your looking for a useful camera phone there is no point in buying one under 3 megapixles. they are usefull to capture moment quickly i just suggest that you should understand how to take a photo depending on the occasion. just take the five minutes to learn how to use your camera to make it more than a flash gadget. soon enough i hope mobile phones will have the technology to take good camera quality photo's. The only problem I have with phone cameras is the quality of the images.

For one thing, the CCD sensor is very noisy (IE grainy) as it is a very very small sensor to fit with the very small lens, and for another thing, the optical quality is very lacking.

To get good photos you really need a digital SLR camera with a huge CCD/CMOS sensor (or a film SLR camera.)
In a quick situation however a phone camera CAN take "snapshots" but realistically, nothing more than snapshots.

As an enthusiast photographer with a Canon EOS 40D D-SLR camera I am annoyed to no end of the dodgy phone camera photos that are submitted to quality art sites and the fact that the good quality photos taken by amatures and professionals with the proper equipment are swamped by crappy photos that don't belong on art websites.

I have nothing against phone camera photos being shown to family, or used in a family scrapbook or internet blogs, I am only fed up with the crap photos that swamp high quality art.

I purchased my moblie phone: Nokia N73 (pictured, the first of the three) based on its multitasking abilities. The camera itself was what really attracted me to the phone. It has a 3.2 megapixel cameral with an Carl Zeis lens. The practicallity of it really drew me in. It was a two in one camera. It meant that i could have the phone and camera both in one gadget. There are always times when you want to take that special moment and cant be bothered in lugging around a camera with you everywhere. The camera phone is very versatitle. So in conclusion mobile phones wth cameras are very useful!

I have a Nokia mobile phone with a camera. I got the phone because my old one was a bit outdated and because I like the 'flip top' phones. I would have gotten it even if it didn't have a camera. I use the phone camera sometimes and either upload the picture to my computer via a data cable or email myself the photo from the phone. The quality isn't the best, but seeing I don't always carry my digital camera with me, it is good enough. I usually only use the phone for calls and SMS, so the other features aren't really that important.

I work in a customer service call center for Australias largest Telco company. Dealing mainly with small business customers rather then consumers I can see a huge market for more simple phones.

There are so many people out there (particularly farmers) who just want a phone that makes calls! They really need to design a simple phone that has no camera - no flashy bits and pieces - not even a colour screen - they just want superior reception so that their business doesnt lose out in the end.

And its fair enough - how many people out there stick to the "if it isnt broken then dont fix it" rule. So many people who are computer illiterate (and phones basically ARE computers these days) are having no end of trouble adjusting to these new handsets. Leave the 8G Nokia N95's to the younger generations and the tech savy olds - not everyone wants one.

PERSONALLY for the metro dweller - phones like the Nokia N95 (now on the Next G Network aswell) - its great - you've got a 5MP camera, a phone, internet access and a GPS all in the one device - but at over 1K RRP who can afford to lose one in the back of a Taxi after a drunken night on the town?

A top of the line phone like that is not likely to be returned, however if this does happen to you please contact your service provider and get the IMEI blocked, the sim barred and the internet barred - if EVERYONE did this when they lost a phone we'd have so many more returned handsets because ppl would realise that stolen phones are useless to them.

Have a great Xmas all!!

Having a camera on a mobile phone is handy for those quick snaps of a memorable moment but in the long run it does not come close to haveing the full use of a camera that has telescopic lens and fine focusing like the SLR's. Mobile phones have the convienience for just being close at hand without lugging photo equipment about, but you dont get the quality and desired effect as you would with conventional cameras..

I have a phone with a camera but it's so dodgy that I would rarely ever use it. If anyone is serious about photography, or even just wants to take good photos of their kids and family, they would go out and buy a proper digital camera or SLR. Its good to have if you plan to take photos to store on your phone, use as back grounds etc, some phones even allow you to have the picture of the person who calls you?
other than that i use my phone for calling and txt and thats about it. sometimes on the rare occasion to send relatives photos of the family to there phones but apart from that you wouldnt need one.

I think it is useful to have a camera on your phone because you never know when you will see something that you would like to share with someone.

I also think getting emails on your phone is handy, only if you work in a busy environment were you need to look at your emails all the time. If you dont need the emails for work than it is a waste of time.

I just bought the new Nokia N95. My partner thinks it's hilarious that I would buy a phone that does so much as it has features I will never use. However, I have already found the camera (5 megapixel) to be extremely handy to have, as I never remember a camera when I am out and about. The quality of the image is really good. I don't think i'd use it for proper sightseeing, but it's great for those times when you wish you had a camera but forgot it! I used to have the Motorola Razr and that camera was worse than useless if you wanted a decent image to use for anything other than as wallpaper on the phone.
I plan to use more of the features of my phone as time goes along, but at the moment I am readjusting myself to using a Nokia again, as it's a bit different from the Motorola.

So what is so important that people must have the phone with them 24/7. Life is too fast now, we all need to slow down and enjoyed whats around and not worry about if some one needs to talk to us. It can wait!!!
The phone on the wall still can keep you in contact with the world

If I want to take a photograph I will use one of my camera's and achieve an acceptable quality result.
Many companies do not permit cameras within the work place for obvious reasons, and with a couple I have been consulting to, this included phone cameras.

I recently had a Telstra "G" mobile phone taht had camera capability. we had fun taking photos in a restaurant as a family. when I tried to put them on the computer I fauiled and the instructions were so brief as to be unhelpful. Fortunately my phone fell in thje toilet and I bought a cheaper phone with no camera so now I don't have too worry about working out how to use my phone camera. The children are good at it - they were born with "blue teeth" I reckon, and have taken photos and emailed them to friends and teachers ., They can make them work. Asa for me, the picture quality is poor and I would rather take a better phot with a good camera- shame it is not with me when I need it though! That is the advantage of the mobie phone camera.

Luckily my phone has a good camera in it so the quality is very good, however I dont believe it is a necessity to have its just good to have, saves taking the camera everywhere - however it is a concern of mine that they can be used for the wrong purpose. as for using the net etc I just dont want or need that. I suppose like many others i have used the camera as a thing of conveiniance rather than quality. i have one of the later samsungs with the bells and whistles , even if i have no idea how to use the majority of it. All things considered its a gimmick , yes sometimes handy , but i personally would sacrifice the fancy stuff for a phone that didnt drop out so much and always had service when i need it. Forget the camera give me a stronger phone that will actually do what it says, a phone that is operational whenever i am mobile.

I own a mobile phone to make and receive calls - that is all I want of it - When I want to take a photo, I want a sharp good definition photo, and use a quality camera for the purpose. It I want to surf the internet or check e-mails I use my computer.
It frankly annoys me that it is getting progressively more difficult to buy a plain simple basic mobile phone just for using as a telephone

I always considered the cameras to be superfluous, even when I got my current phone which has a 2 megapixel camera. I am not particularly happy with the quality of the picture produced (it may be 2 megapixel, but the picture is very grainy compared with my "real" 2 megapixel camera) but there have been times when my real camera has run out of battery that I've been very grateful to have even that basic backup.

Unless the quality of the picture produced, not just the size, increases considerably, I would not consider that the camera in the phone is anything other than a back up.

The mp3 and radio are valuable additions though - but that's not what this question is about...

I have one, but seldom use it. The screen is too small to really see what the end result is. OK for special occasions where a normal camera is not available, and quick snap shots, but not as a permanent record of events or people.

This technology is amazing. Ohotgraphy now in the hands of ALL that want to try their hands at imitating
their hands at imitating Tony Armstrong Jones.
But does the public realise the nausier caused by the increased interferance of others privacy.

One cannot go anywhere these days without seeing (OR... Unseeing ) hundreds of these pests with camera/Telephones.

Actually they are potentially very dangerous. I had one of the first hand held phones in Australia. However I did an unpublished study on potential health effects and got rid of the phone very fast indeed. As this is a very controversial subject I do not like to go deeper into it. Needless to say that I will never use them again.

i have the basic nokia no colour screen, no camera, no internet, no email no polyphonic ringtones and no MP3 player.
I love it I only want to call and text. If I want to take a photo I have a digital camera and a video camera. I can obviously access the net without it on my phone and send emails. and if I want to listen to music I have an MP3 player. Why would I need it on my phone aswell? I'm not going to get rid of any of the other things if I suddenly decide to upgrade. So why bother upgrading I'm staying with CDMA till it dies.

I havent seen a great printed mobile phone picture yet. I think they are great in an emergency. Like something happening that you just cant miss. but id much prefer to use my proper camera if im taking photos. I think its a good idea to have all the other gadgets on the phone - helps one decide what phone suits thier needs.

I am a very busy sales rep, i need to be on the road as much as possible, seeing clients and selling my goods. My company has just bought a package including the new blackberrys. So far i am still working it out, but i can say it has given me more time on the road (dont have to go back to the office as much to do quotes and check emails). The blackberty allows me to down load my emails and send replys whilst on the road. I also need the camera function. Im in the printing trade, so ever now and then product fails and i need to take pictures and send them to managment. So all this new technology is great for a working person. but there is still a time and place. I dont like talking on the phone say on the train or bus. everyone doesnt need to know how my date went last night or what i want for dinner or stuff like that. i dont make calls after 830 unless its close friends or family. As for having seperate gadgets for seperate function i disagree, the less to carry the better i think.....

Well, a phone having a camera does comes in handy all the time. We can do many things with it....wheather from public to private. Anyway... even so the resolution of camera on the phone is getting bigger & better but it still has its own limit. I have compare a 3.2MegPix Phone camera to a normal 3.2MegPix Camera. There is still a huge different between them. Most of the time it would be the Color or the Image quality. But still...a phone with camera? its way too cool!!!! We can take lots of snap shots conveniently. Picture Phone call... not boring as ever where its only name & number of the caller appear on the screen. Last word, COOL.

i feel it wont be long before all phones will 'as standard options' phone, blue tooth, wap.
i feel that while being at times useful, are not nessassary. what i would give for a phone that worked in all areas. i am yet to find one.
the camera has helped me in a few situations, simply because it is there and handy. i have assisted the police when witnessing a hit and run, by photographing the vehice involved.
also on the lighter side, i no longer need to carry photos of my family in my wallet - i keep them on the phone as a screen saver

I recently upgraded to the latest Samsung U700, has a 3.2 mega pixel camera built and its brilliant. Slim design, looks funky and has all the bells and whistles you could possible want............................However, who wants them all. I have a personal phone and a mobile that is used for business and as long as I am able to call, receive calls and text than I am completely satisfied!

I read an article just recently on a new mobile being released in coming months (samsung) that has a 5.0 mega pixel camera, 2gb hard drive capability and email, organiser, MP3,4 etc and I think WHAT IS GOING ON!

I own a camera because I want a camera, I own a phone for accessibility and I own a laptop to utilise the internet. Too many gadgets in one area is just a headache to use?

They mostly come with cameras now so why not use them? I've had a camera (including video) for over three years now, and even though some of the pics/vids aren't the greatest quality, I've captured some priceless moments that I wouldn't have otherwise. They also have heaps of practical purposes. I document things all the time using my phone camera. And now that the quality is getting quite good, the photos can actually be used to show other people.

I'd like a combination of a basic phone and really good camera. When I am doing sports I find it a real pain to have a phone in one pocket and a camera in another.
I'm not so sold on having web browsing on a phone. I have to sit infront of the web all day, I don't need it in my pocket.

Should phones be all things to all men? No of course not. They're just a device, no different to an iron, laptop or watch. Clearly its the colouring in monkeys (aka marketing departments of the large technology phone companies) that have convinced us to personify these devices to extent that we overlook their flaws, and confess deep and strange feelings of desire and love, that should be reserved for our significant others. To be fair yes a camera phone portable computing device is handy to some yet like many products these days the specifications that people base their purchasing decisions on are essentially spurious, specious and misleading.

For example mega pixels. Most television except for high end models can't even display a 2 megapizel image. Your computer monitor would be hard pressed as well. Yet people are convinced that these specification convey meaningful information about the quality of the picture being displayed. Ever wonder why your 2-mega pixel camera out performs your 3 mega pixel camera phone? The sensor that captures the picture you've taken is really small in a camera phone. Even though it might have 3, or 5 million buckets (a bucket represents a pixel of information/picture) because it and the lens is really small only a limited amount of light/information ever hits the sensors. So because only a few hundred thousand of the buckets are getting meaningful information the remaining couple million of buckets are just receiving nothing - noise.

So the result is that you have a lot of noise (information that conveys no meaning) against a limited amount of meaningful of information. Hence you get a picture that is grainy and pretty useless unless its displayed on a really small screen - a mobile phone display for example.

So the phone companies advertise their handset has a great 5megapixel camera knowing full well that that feature is pretty much useless. All I can suggest is that if you really want a camera phone look for one that has a big lens. But then again lens are the most expensive component on any type of camera so in turn the cost increases.

My second gripe with mobile phones (some what of a misnomer since they're turning into portable computers these days), is how you input (aka the keypad) information into them. Back in the day when the only thing a phone did was to make a telephone call, the keypad was more then suitable, heck it could be argued excessive. Yet despite increasing the features on these products tenfold, for example the all inclusive calendar, browser and email application, the keypad for most affordable handsets remains basically unchanged

That’s why ultra expensive blackberries and nokia handsets with full-size keyboards have become immensely popular. They let you use these features without the bottleneck the traditional keypad represents. Yet a full size keyboard, that only costs a few cents to manufacturer you pay an excessive premium. Obviously this is how the manufacturers differentiate their products.

There are several consumer level devices that are just being launched (mainly as a teaching aid for children) that use an electrode against the skull to read brainwaves. The device detects certain brainwaves the user forms (through mental concentration), and, as a result conveys this into, say, the moving of a cursor across a screen, or the selecting of an option. Mobile phones are more then powerful to run the software and it would be easy to have the electrode to be combined with those Bluetooth headset one wears. The user then could manipulate their phone with nay a touch on the keypad. Hell you could remove the keypad. Such a feature could even be used with laptops.

Perhaps I read too much scfi but it seems to me that mobile phone manufacturers are more then happy to limit the potential of their devices and sell them on the coat tails of a few specious features then to really explore the potential of their devices and give consumers (god I hate that word) something that could be really useful, even amazing.

I do have a camera phone and like most teenagers... I LOVE IT. I think they are awsome because personally whenever im out and see something or someone i like to take pictures with my friends and so on. I have soo many picture i have taken with my phone, the memorys, that if i didnt have the phone i would have never got those pictures.

After having a camera phone i think (as silly as it sounds) i would feel los with out it if i had a normal phone!

i have used my phone in the past for news, weather and horoscopes. the horoscopes are fun and interesting and the news is useful however i find that the weather function isnt something i use a lot. its easier and cheaper to use a computer. it is good to have it available though.

my phone has camera and video capabilities also (nokia n70) and i use these frequently. with a removable memory chip i can take files off the phone and put them onto the computer and vice versa which i find is very handy.

well i like to stay up with it and i reckon emailing and all that businessy stuff with come in handy like when you're on the run or something, just thinking on the fast track side of life when you're up in the business part. Plus a camera and video and music and such are handy. For example when you want to take a photo and you dont have a camera with you, you have your phone and 'pop' capture the moment and if you want to take a video of something , there you go. you have it inside your phone and music, well who doesn't like a good tune to listen to every now and then? and with the bonus of internet on your phone, you're able to log on and quickly do something very urgent.
Thats just what i think of phones these days. I have on and I reckon you should get one too. Everyone's got one and they have theor uses. But if you're happy with just the calls and SMS, then fine but just in case you want to do something elsee....

I have a camera phone and very rarely used it but was glad when I took my new dog to show to my brother and took their photo together. It turned out to be the last photo taken of my brother as he was in a fatal car accident 6 days later. Although the picture quality it not as good as it would have been with a digital camera it still provides a happy memory for me. I still don't carry a digital camera everywhere I go but my mobile is always with me for spontaneous occasions.

I believe Useful as when you are out and about and you happen to see something you like, you can take a photo with your phone so you have some kind of proof of what it looks like. It also comes in use if you wish to send pictures to your friends.
Wallpapers also look good with real life pictures.

And so I say they are Useful over flashy

i've found it handy to have the camera, especially since recently giving birth to our first child....

i was able to setup an sms msg (before birth) to announce her arrival, take lots of pics of her and send them to friends and relatives.

so now i have a bunch of early memories that i would only have in my head if not for this phone.!!

the calendar is great for loading in birthdays, and reminders.
i like my camera mobile phone!!

I find the pictures from my 2MP camera on my phone are not really good enough to share, but good for recording moments, be it out and about or something that you really want to have a picture of but don't have your camera. Camera's in phones have never been a big sell for me but if a practical, affordable, RELIABLE phone came along that had a greater resolution with more on board storage (or a decent hot swappable flash card included then i would really start appreciating and using it more.

mobile phones with cameras are actually quite useful i myself have a digital camera but i forget to always pack it in my bag to go out plus it is juust an extra item to take out and possibly loose, where as if i have my phone i can take a photo right then and there, i find it much more convenient, whenever i need to work out a date my phone also has a calender so again my bag doesnt have a calender and it it much easier to work out dates using my phone although i do not save memos in there i usually write these on paper somewhere, all in all i find it very convenient having extra functions on my mobile

In the first few years of mobile phone cameras the images taken were of poor quality, and most likley were 'just flashy' . However the quality has impoved noticeably. I do have a phone with a camera, but I prefer to use my digital camera. However, when I got my phone I wanted one with a camera, and they do come in handy. I have a phone with email and a camera. It isn't of great use to me, but i still find it entertaining to have. Once more gadgets are put together everything may get much more expencive. This is a bad thing but it helps people not to loose their many gadgets. Otherwise, if you only want a phone that texts and calls other phones. You are probably better off going to an electronic second hand store and buying one of those classic "brick" phones.
Althought I am 14, and don't need all the gadgets my phone comes with, I still would much rather have the phone I have now than own a "brick".
I think that all the new gadgets with the phones now are a lure to buy them. I think I would love to own a phone that has great access to the internet I use on my computer. I think that as tecnology advances, we will use whatever flashy high tec stuff we can get our hands on.

i think the cameras are ok, sometime they can be useful in an emergency i.e. if you have a car accident, and you dont have regular camera on hand. but as for internet i find that a total waste of time, some people may find it easy, from personal experience it is highly expensive and all too easy to accidently access without noticing.if you ask me its a budget breaking bill waiting to happen!!!

Cameras on phones obviously increase the [rice range of the phone dramatically and although consumers opt for the "flashier" phones with cameras they never seem to use them as much as they intend to. Camera phones are useful when a photo worthy moment comes along, however the quality of the images aren't ever of a high standard and so it would be better to have both a camera and phone rather than wasting money combining the two for less than satisfactory results.

i recently bought a phone with a 1.3 megepixel camera. i find that it's good for taking pictures with friends at school and at places where i would rather not bring digital camera. the photos i take on my phone camera are just happy snaps that i feel no need to print, its just good to be able to take photos of my friends that i can carry around with me.
phone cameras are becoming very good to actually be used for more that just happy snaps, my friend bought a phone with something like 4 mega pixels, that is almost as good as my digital camera. these cameras are designed for our conveniance and are just more useful in the way you can communicate and share pictures with you friends at any time.

theres no way Id take my camera to certain social events, as its worth a bit of money - so having the camera on my phone is good for those situations where I want to take 'happy snaps' when out etc...or if Im driving home and (eg.) theres an awesome sunset, a shot I just CANT miss, and I dont have my camera on me. The camera on my phone is only a 2megapixel, so while it takes somewhat decent shots...they dont compare to the shots I take with my digital camera..not by a long shot.

I believe that having a camera and other very handy tools in your mobile excellent. You'll always find that circumstances can arise when you dont have a camera/diary/ or the web when you will need to use these tools. People generally always have their phones and thus have access to such tools. Also a phone company is more likely to sell more phones depending on the features they have. Most people want as many special features and tools as they can get.

I think a lot of people would be turned off buying a mobile phone without a decent camera these days. It has become a feature that is expected in a decent mobile phone. As for the multiple features I think the idea is that people want a compact device that 'does the lot'.

You can still buy the basic phones, but the way everything i going now its getting easier to just have the one gadet that way you dont have to bring a backpack with you when you go out, The days of carrying around a lap top are almost over cause you can do it from your phone, i have a phone with a camera, PDA Screen email, internet, and all the other little gadgets and its really handy, whenever i want something its there, For example, I was lost once and i used my mobile to guide me back home, it was great, If you know how to use it i think they are the perfect thing and yes i do think having cameras will lure people to buy them, but if its not your thing then thats fine too, whatever is easier for you.

Hi!! I think that having all the gadgets in one is a good idea, because then you don't have to carry as much in your bag. I have a pone with a camera/video in it and it's really good to be able to just take out your phone and take photos/videos of funny/important moments. However, i would probably like a phone with better graphics because my motorola v3x has a pretty pixelised resolution which make it all blurry when i move the video camera. :)

Personally I find that mobiles are for ringing people not the million other things they have been programmed to do!!! I have been in the situation where people I know have taken photos of me without my permission and I have been really upset because it was done against my wishes, and my so called friends didnt care what i thought.

Mobiles are totally out of control with children as young as 5 owning mobiles worth hundreds of dollars and calling their friends. Do they really need them....

Although as much as I hate mobiles, mine plays an important factor in my life to keep in contact with my mum and dad while we are all working seperately.

My phone does have a camera and can access the internet but I barely ever use either because I also have a digital camera and a laptop which can do the jobs I need more effectively and easier as well. I find that the new phones end up being more confusing and harder to use, so yes I would prefer a phone that just does the general calls and SMS messages.

a phone camera is definitely useful as u dnt have to carry around a digital camera aswell, plus it is great for those times when u want totake a picture and had no plans to (hence didnt bring the digital camera). Cameras on all phones is definitely the future...which is evident in almost all the new ranges of phones coming out today. I recently got a new phone and it has a 2 megapixel camera which is more than enough pixels for a phone. Obviously the pixels arent as good as a digital camera but as the phone is not specifically designed to take photos, 2 megapixels is all that is needed for a clear photo.

We're totally the same i'd rather my things all separate and used for just one activity instead of one little gadget that has or these other gadgets all built in one. A mobile is used to talk and sms people, a camera is used to take photos etc. But their's two sides to the story. For example why waste money on a camera when you have a built in camera in your mobile? And as for the emails that's why you have an sms feature you can use. It acts like an email you know. Also it's more exspensive to send an email then an sms. It'll cost financially in the long run so i'd stick to smsing. Well that's my opinion.

I've had the weirdest (maybe more unique) phones..
Okay, my first was a nokia - but excluding this.
My second phone was a Siemens SL55.
Now I have a Pantech PG-8000 (I can bet you that nobody in Australia has seen it before lol).

Anyways, the Nokia was for calls. Then I went with Siemens SL55 (small, stylish, push-up); I bought it for the size basically as it was the smallest back then (4 years ago) with the organizational functions. It had the latest communication technology so it costed me $700 AUD - now its probably only worth $150.

Half a year ago, I bought the Pantech. I was wanting to buy the Nokia N75 or Sony Ericsson K810 for its 3.2 Mp camera, but I hate the cursor thingy. After deliberating at the department store (the whole floor of 20 mobile phone stores) for 2 hours, I ended up quitting on the camera capability (as I have a Sony T-9 which has a 6Mp - and no phone (maybe Samsung's 8Mp) can compare to a normal digital camera) to decide on this 2Mp one. But it has a wicked design. It is in the design of a camera, and its horizontal (uhm look up an image of this so you get my meaning..). So you do sms with your right hand, and theres extra navigation you can do with your left.

I bought my father at the same time Nokia 6300 (which is now the craze) for $400, and my uncle Sony Ericsson K790 for $360.

In high school, most of my aquantancies change mobiles at least once in a year. I can't believe how some people don't take care of it - dropping it, throwing it, making scratches and end up deliberately ruining it so their parents would get a new one for them. They wanted the latest, the prettiest, with the 'I-have-the-best-phone" look.

I never use my phone to go online, its too slow, and half the day I'm staring at a computer screen... So 3G is almost useless to me.
In the end, I just call, sms, game a little and use the camera/ video camera attatched if I don't have my digital camera.

well with my mobile phone i have a camera, radio, calander, Mp3, i can even access the internet from my phone. the thing is that being a teenager as i am there is a lot of peer pressure to have a good phone that has heaps of different applications even if i dont use half of them. if it was up to me and not what my friends think i would prefer to have a phone that just recieves sms and calls and can send and call.
i have found that there are hardly any phones left that only do this and obviously the more application the more they cost. :(

i am a 14yr old teenager so i should no quite a bit about mobile phones. no i do not think cell phones need camera's on them because if your buying a phone then your usually getting it because you want to txt people or call them, so why should you need a camera, so yes ofcourse it is there to make more money because ofcourse the mobile phone is going 2 cost more if it has a flash and expensive camera built into it.

I have a camera on my phone, but i dont use it very often. I just think that the quality of the pictures isnt great especially compared to a proper digital camera, but carrying a digital camera around with you so that you are able to take photos is also really inconvenient. When i have wanted to use the camera on my phone there have been times that it wont take a photo because the battery is low or some other reason, and it usually takes a few pics to get it to look right, and that doesnt happen so often with digital cameras. But it is easier to carry around a phone and camera in one.

My phone doesn't have a camera on it, but most of my friends have camera phones. They never use them though - the pictures always end up looking lame and pixellated, as my friends always complain, despite what all the mobile phone ads try to tell them. If you want decent pictures get a camera!

i think camera phones are useful but a video phone and mp3 etc is just flashy. I wouldnt be able to live with a phone if it didnt have a camera but i would if it didn't have video. the camera is good if your out or don't have a camera with u and see something important or just sumthing that looks cool you can catch it on camera but i dnt think videos are nessecary and i think mp3 etc are just way too flashy! and expensive!!!!!!

okay well i have a phone tht doesnt have a camera so therefore doesnt make a video either i honestly dont mind it doesnt affect my everyday life. but having a camera and being able to take a video with ur phone is really useful sometimes like when the gun shooter entered a college in the US a guy was able to take footage which was useful... (i didnt follow the whole story..) and like when u see a scene outside of the bus window u have to keep. so cameras in our phones isnt a bad thing but we can defenatly live without it

i have a camera phone, and it is awesome!! its so handy, when i want to take pics, i just get it out! Much more useful than carting around a camera all day. It has WAP, but i don't use it at all. i don't need to use it, and its an absolute rip off!

I have a camera phone, and although the camera on my mobile isnt as good quality as an actual camera, it is good for random photos, or not important photos. Being teenage girls, my friends and I are quite obsessed with taking photos of ourselves. And if we are just out and about, or say at a train station or something, thats when my camera on my phone is most used. The pictures are good for a background on my phone, I rarely connect my phone to my computer to transfer the photos.

But if I am going to an important event, say a birthday or wedding, I will take my digital camera, just so the pictures are better quality.

I have other feautures on my phone, like Instant Messaging, email and watching TV. But I dont use them, as why send an email from my phone (which costs quite a lot I might add) when I can just go to a computer? Why watch TV on my mobile when I can watch it on an actual television, where the screen is bigger and better quality? Although my phone goes everywhere with me.. I draw the line somewhere.

I think they are useful, I'm really good at forgetting to bring a camera to important events, but I never leave my phone at home, so I always have a back-up to use for taking photos. My camera is fairly old, but the camera on it is still decent, the photos it takes arent as great as an actual camera, but you can still see the picture and get the drift of what's happening in it. My boyfriend has a new phone and the camera on that is extremely good, I think that its as good as a digital camera, it has a flash, night-mode, 5x zoom, and if you take a photo when someone is moving it will focus it for you.
Overall, I think that camera phones are a wonderful invention, and they're a great help especially when you are in a dilemma and you forget your camera.

i actually own my own phone, and yes, it does have a camera on it.
the mobile phone is used for Communication. it was originally directed at business people who always on the move, but in todays society they are a nessecity for children as young as 13.

i beleive that the camera is actuallly another method used to Communicate, and thats why these days you wont be able to purchase a phone without a camera. many people believe they wont use it, but in reality it has come to use. (like when a new born comes to the family.. (issue arises) dont have a digital camera? use your mobile (resolving the issue).. and upload it to your computer and send it to your family and friends(communication))

just one question. if u were on camp. would u want to carry around a phone with a camera in buildt while carryin a digital camera around aswell?

im sure that more and more ppl would be interested in purchasing a phone if it had more advanced features like camera, radio etc that are of good quality. Cameras of less than 2 megapixle are not at all good as the pics r soo small and pixilated which are no good. I have a samsung slide phone and the camera is excellent!!!

I'm sure business people really appreciate having a phone that can take photos and connect to the internet. I don't see a problem with phones having so many gadgets and rather being than annoyed by them enjoy the great service they provide!!

I think that phone cameras are useful, especially at unexpected moments. I usually have to carry my cellphone around, but i don't carry my digital camera around that much, as i can just use my phone camera, but the camera takes better photos. i sometimes use my cellphone to take pictures if i don't have my digital camera. either it has ran out of batteries, lost or broken i still can use my phone. i use my phone mainly for SMS messaging & phone calls. Cameras are just an extra to me, but a very good extra. and yes i agree. its hard to find phones these days without cameras & a whole lot of extras.

i think mobile phone cameras are useful.

like once i had a car crash i needed to take pictures of evidence of what happened and i didn't have my digi camera with me. but most people usually have the cell phones so i think it can be pretty useful in those situations

but.

on the other hand they cost alot more; you can no longer find a phone without a camera so you have to pay for the extra of the camera and other functions.

I believe that have all these 'gadgets' on the phone are fine, they keep me busy when I'm bored and I just love a phone with everything on it. I actually dislike phones with nothing on them because they just have nothing to do, yes phones are for making call and texting but that all cost money and sometimes you can get a bit carried away and when you run out of credit or when the bill comes in and its big you want to slow done. Then after awhile its just a piece of plastic you carry around. This is why I like my gadgets and maybe there should be phones made with nothing on it for the people that dislike these gadgets then everyone is happy.
Thanks

They can be handy for those times you dont have a camera on you & you want to take some pictures. But they're also a very bad idea as ppl use it the wrong way... theres been many cases of ppl using it to take pics of little kids or take pictures of ppl undressing at a beach at its a invasion of privacy for others.

Having a mobile phone that allows you to take pictures is great because you dont always carry a camera around wtih you and can be especially good if it is of a good quality as it can help you catch a moment or if used in the right way can even help the police. i think the combination of cameras, internet into a mobile phone is teh future as it is easy to use on the run and can even end up being cheaper than buying a seperate camera, computer and phone.

I'm a bit on the fence. If something new and "gadget-y" comes out, of course I want it, however even though my phone has a Digital Camera and MP3 Player, I still use the phone for calls/text, my Camera for photos, my MP3 for music, and my computer for email. I guess it just comes down to personal preference, and how long (and much $$) you are willing to spend working it all out.

I run a few mobile phone shops and often talk to my staff about this question. Someone bought up an interesting point of when ever we take a phone in for repair, we tell the customer that there is a chance they will loose everything on the phone. The first thing all customers say is "How do i save my contacts". Very rarely do people want there photos saved. If you are going somewhere and need a camera most people will take there camera.

The Nokia N95 was realeased about two months ago now with 5MP cam on it. This is the first in its kind but a lot of people were a lot more interested in the built in GPS. I think GPS is a much more sort after device in mobiles. The Nokia 6110 is a cheap phone incoperating a GPS into it. In response to another coment, i believe nokias to be great phones, but the company is lacking customer care. Other phone producers will bend over backwards to help you where nokia will stand there ground and not move an inch.

I've got the N70 which I have had for the last year and a half, while it is much better than the LG or the Sony Ericsson I still find that the camera quality at night time in bars or outside is terrible. Daytime photos are OK but I find that the camera/phone has to be held extremely steady for a few seconds, even after the click sound, otherwise the image is blurry.

Phones are good at making phone calls (which is why they are called phones.. duhh!) but for everything else, jack of all trates, master of none! Not to mention the privacy issues cameras on our phones create.

And who in their right mind finds it useful to watch a movie on such a small screen?

Not to mention, phones don't sound like phones anymore.. you hear a phone ring and it could be anything these days.

People carry on about phones, and love the gimmickry, that they look cool, that they are cool owning one.. sorta like an iPod, or a mac. I own a mobile phone We as humans really need to get a grip, and be less consumerist, and more aware at what price and detrement we are causing the environment. We need these sort of devices? I think not.

Some mobile phone cameras are a bit over the toop bu the basic ones are good. There handy if your out and about and want a second opinion on something your about to buy either for yourself or if for the other person to see if they like it or need it before you buy it. This saves the time of having to go through the return process if not what they wanted etc. There also handy if you go out to visit someone where you need your camera but you left it at home, say if you visit a friend who has just had a baby and forgot your camera. You can still take a few pics of the Bubs and Proud Parents while your there with your phone's camera.

Given that film cameras provided a range of quality films, with most phones now having a 2mp camera and mms capability, it's not only worthwhile as a new method of instant communications but able to print up to a 6x4 photo at a decent measure of quality.
Going to a 3.2 or the new 5mp Nokia, agreed, it's pricey but so were digital cameras when they first appeared.

Bring em on!

  • 11th Jun 2007 06:20am

I think that mobiles are too expensive anyway, without having to pay extra for the one's with mobile phone facility.

I think they are good for catching that unexpected moment, but how often does that happen ? I have noticed the poor quality when printing so they haven't really caught my attention.

The digital camera was a fabulous invention and I think I'll just keep my mobile for calls and texting.

Another thing you have to consider, is what would you do if it were lost/stolen ? As well as all your contact details, you had valuable and some sensitive photo's !!!

Phones are more and more tuning into multi-purpose devices. At the rate their going at soon they'll be your all in one: phone, sms, mp3 player, camera, internet browser, note taker, video camera, light, movie viewer, external hard drive, the list goes on. Many phones already have many of these decides but their continuing to be improved every day. Personally I'd prefer to use my camera over holding um my mobile phone (like my brother) but the times are changing so in ten years or so I'll probably have one of these devices like everyone else.

Originally, I thought a mobile could just travel through life being used for speaking with people however, I now appreciate the virtues of an attached camera. This function is great for my work situations where outfits need to be recorded and also great for birthday parties or any time children are around.

Hi guys.....
im 18 years of age at the moment, and speaking on behalf of alot of kids my age, i believe and im sure many will agree with me, that a good quality phone is the must thing to have these days. I currently own a nokia 6288, which is equiped with a camera, email, calender, etc. The reason for my purchase of this phone is because it saves me having to carry around other different items. For example, i dont need a diary or what not because whenever i need to remember important dates i put a reminder on my phone for the day before or on the day.
Also for the camera on my phone, its not at the highest quality, especially at night with the small flash range, though it does the job effectively. When my friends and I have gone into the city for example, a few of my friends actually take in a digital camera to take photo's. Yes this gives a much better quality photo, especailly long range at night, though when taking photo's of my friends and i, i strongly believe that a it does not matter whether it is on my phone or on a digital camera. It just as easy to download onto the computer and then to send, and it is nearly as good as quality. One of my friends who use to take a digital camera into the city, now has recently bought a new phone which takes very high quality pictures. The details on this picture really is as nearly as good as a digital camera. Again, this saves him having to take his phone and a digital camera into the city, which especailly for girls, with limited hand bag space is a major issue.

Though this is a totally different view on what my parents think. My parents are both in the 50's now, and they rely on their phones to receive calls, make calls and messaging. For this situation, my parents are blowing up at the fact that they cant find a decent phone in which they do not have to pay extra for, for the accessories such as a camera, emailing etc.

So overall, i strongly believe that all phone companies, need to address these 3 target markets. I am currently studying Commerce at Wollongong University and have actually just finished my marketing test. If there is one thing i have learnt from it, its that businesses must address their target audiences. In this case, i think there are 3 different categories.
1) Phones with all accessories to the highest quality ( High price range )
2) Phones with basic accessories, such as camera, calendar etc (Mid-range prices )
3) Plain and basic Phones which is easy to make calls, receive calls and message. ( Low Price range )
By expanding the styles on each of these categories, i really do believe that businesses willl see an increase in sales and revenue, as there is a huge profit to be made within the phone market, especially with the rapid increase of technology in the prsent and future.

Camera's on mobile phones are more important to the younger generation. Though the basic mobile phones should be targeting the older generation

I didn't really care much about the camera feature in my latest phone as i have had a camera in my last four mobile phones which i didn't use. That said, i did use it the other day when i was shopping to check up with a friend what colour dress looked better. It also helps when you are in a conversation about something and you have a picture with you to show someone what you are describing. Although it is a 2.0 megapixel camera, the screen resolution is very poor and the lens is always dirty, resulting in a low quality picture.

Excellent reply Copp.  Totally agree with your thoughts on the different markets and requirements.  Interesting to see from this forum just how many people do use the camera feature on their mobile.  I do also think there are others who only want simple functions and that these people are not really being catered for my the mobile phone manufacturers.

I have a Nokia - I use the clock and alarm all the time, and find the calculator useful when I'm out.
As a graphic designer and printer, I use a good digital camera for shots I need to reproduce, but when I'm at a gig, I don't want to carry a camera. I've always got my phone on me, and I have got some brilliant shots of bands that I never would have otherwise.
The video is OK, but I wouldn't use it for anything important. I don't use the email, or other stuff on the phone much, only the bluetooth connection.

I have a Nokia 6233 with a 2 megapixel camera and use it quite often. Unfortunately due to lack of a flash the qaulity drops sharply in dim conditions but otherwise i find the photo's to be quite good. If I want to take an especially nice shot then I'll use my good camera. Sometimes you just don't know whena photo opportunity will come up and your phone is always there.

I think the major thing that people, especially younger generations, like myself, are sucked in by the stylish look and design of these phones which act as the main attraction. Also, i think that the idea of the camera phone allows us to have one device that we can use to call people and take pictures. Secondly, i never carry my camera around but i always have my phone with me, the camera feature allows me to take shots while on the run, opposed to carrying a camera and a phone around.

I recently purchased a new phone. Of course i chose one with everything in it, 3.2M camera, MP3 player, 3G enabled, running with the Symbian OS, Office Quicknote, so on and so forth. Its pretty much a given that all phones now have calenders, alarms and cameras. However, i find that while it is a 3.2M camera, i still take a camera out when i intend to take pictures.

A calender is handy for birthday and appointment reminders. Besides that, i use my phone for just calls and sms. I tried video calling a few times, but the lag and picture contrast was terrible.

However, with phones so cheap now, i would not consider buying a phone with lacks these features. Even if i was to not use these features, i do not want to go without. I would rather pay more for a phone WITH features, then have a cheap phone WITHOUT features.

Hi all
I agree with Davkell, soooo handy to have on ya all tha time.
Too darn expensive though. Some of us can't afford the things.
The one I've got was given to me by a great friend so I'm lucky.

I think it doesn't hurt to have a whole range of communication options all in one convenient little device that fits into your pocket.
Beats carrying around a Laptop, Video Camera, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, PDA, (Yawn) and so on........
Thats my 2 bobs worth,

You can't go wrong. You carry your mobile around with you everywhere, the camera function comes in handy so many times. Just how many times are important news stories shown on TV with an eyewittnesses 'camera' phones pics or video footage.

The future: One device for everything: Phone/Internet/Camera/Video Camera/Computer etc.

I need to take photos for my job so rather than getting a camera i got a new phone. Its the Sony Ericsson K800i. It has a 3.2MP camera, does my email on the go has a calender for organizing me. Its just everything in one package. The only problem would be if i lost it.

i do agree with you though about keeping my gadgets separate - i have a PocketPC pda and a mobile rather than a smartphone, coz I think the functionality is way better when they're separate (there's always a compromise when u combine them). but i find the reduced resolution and screen size on my mobile phone camera acceptable coz it's just so convenient!

Mobile phone cameras are AWESOME!! they're so portable since i bring my mobile everywhere with me, i find that when i want to take a picture, my digital camera is lying in my cupboard at home so i whip out my mobile and start clicking...

I thought they were ridiculus. But as a tacher I find I use it all the time for incidental assessment that one cannot capture any other way. Videosand photo of children doing things is often a far more valuable and accurate way of assessing work that tests. With it in my pocket I just flip it open and fire away.

I recently bought a new sony ericson, was tossing up that with the nokia N73 and ended up going with the sony only because my previous phone which was sony ericson gave me no troubles. The main reason that I was looking at both of these was because they both had the 3.2 megapixel camera.

The Camera is an important function to me, however video messaging is not really important.

Flashy. My husband just got one(pictured middle, Nokia) and yeh sure he has taken photos of the kids to show friend and use as screen savers but we already have a decent digital camera. The pics are no good to print out once uploaded to PC.

But, having said that they could come in very handy say in a criminal situation by a quick thinker who could snap some evidence.

Thirdly I am concerned re the privacy issue. A camera is clearly visable vs is that guy on the phone or taking pictures??

I dont have a digital camera myself just a nokia phone with inbuilt camera, so its convenient having that option available to you when you need it. I think it beats having nothing at all. I also think a mobile phone is more essential to everyday lifestyle than a digi camera is so more people would be looking to get a mobile first rather than a digital camera, so to integrate the two of them gives people the option to save money rather than buying both items, especially when u can get alot of these good new phones on a fairly priced mobile plan. I guess my arguement is that a mobile phone with an integrated camera can work out alot cheaper for some people, and also convenient to those who dont have a stand alone camera, but still want to take photos. So I say integrate as much technology as you can aslong as its still easy to use and doesnt compromise the overall price and style of the gadget.

I recently bought a new phone, Nokia 6380 on the 3 network and I think its fantastic. Since the phone was free and the plan costs the same as I used to spend on credit it was a bonus to reveive a 3.0 MP camera (video capable) and connection to the 3 network. Admittedly I do not go 'online' everday, however if I miss a footy game and want to check the score, or eevn watch it live if im not near a tv then its a handy thing to have. I do have a digital camera which I use to take photos when I'm out or with family - however I do not carry it everywhere as I do my phone. So for those situation that I am camera-less I still have the opportunity to record those images to be experienced again later

I have had a Nokia 6288 with a 2 megapixel camera for about 6 months. It has suprised me just how much I do use it to take pics on occasions where I would not normally take a camera with me but wish I had.
Compared to the earlier model phones where the cameras were more a gimic than a practial tool because of poor imeage quality, these newer phones are great.
There are those (like my mum) who still just want a basic phone that makes phone calls and is simple to use.

For me it is really convenient having so many tools at your fingertips in such a small device.

My last few phones have had camera's. My latest the Motorola V6 has a 2 megapixel camera. I find they are great for when your kids are doing something interesting & you can take a quick snap & send it to your parrtner.

Late last year i won a Sony Erricson mobile, with a camera etc. I have only used the camera for taking pics of my new baby and was actually really impressed with how well the photos that I took of pictures of bub on my computer screen turned out on the phone!!! Wasn't expecting them to work at all, but they look like photos I have taken with the phone! Other than that my phone is, as it has always been, just for emergencies and the odd text to find out where someone is, etc.
I am totally opposed to kids having these phones at school. I, like many, survived school without having a phone/camera/whatever with me!

I like the idea of the camera phones as I can take photos of my two children being silly and send them to their father when he is at work. But there are some people out there in the community that use the camera fdunction for bad taste things like taking pictures up ladies skirts when they going up stairs etc. which is just wrong. I do like the functions of the new phones myself but for the main reason I said earlier as its a good and eaasy way to send pictures to their father and grandparents of them doing stuff at home etc.

i use mine as a mini catalogue.. when i'm out shopping and i see a good deal, i'll take a snap and show it to someone who might have interest.. for example, a family member might be looking for a tv to buy and i might pass one for a good price.. things like that.. they're really handy for emergencies..

i hate mobiles! i am normally good with the new gadgets and cool things but phones i have fallen behind in the times. my phone is about to die and i need a new one but i walk into a store and get confused and frustrated with all the options and jargon that is floating around the place. i like my phones plain and simple, talk and text. maybe i'll buy a new fancy one with everything and try and throw myself into the new technology. i like the ideas of having all the new stuff on the phones, just for me its pretty overwhelming at the moment and as soon as i master the new stuff i'll be true blue happy.

I think cameras on mobile phones are handy, especially if you don't carry your digital camera around with you. My current one hasn't got a very good camera on it but I still use it for situations when I don't have my camera. They are not very good for doing faraway shots, but for a group of friends or something similar they are wonderful. In regards to the email side of things, I personally haven't used it, but my mum was recently over in Aussie and one of her friends doesn't has a mobile...so she emailed him from her mobile to keep him up-to-date on her travels. This was great for this situation (except that he couldn't reply to her!). I think in the future there will be more of these phones that do everything, and they will be more reasonably priced so everyone will end up with one (even if they didn't necessarily want one!!!)

I love having a phone / camera all in one and I think it is one of the most useful "gadgets" around. Although the camera is not of the same quality as the other cameras I have, the pictures are OK and I take more photos on my phone then on my other cameras as it is so convenient and I always have a camera on me if I have my phone on me. You have to remember so much to take with you when you go out that you don't want to be trying to remember to take lots of individual electronic devices. Its much easier just remembering to take one only.

Mobile phone cameras are useful if you're the sort of person who likes their happy snaps anyway. Why carry a phone AND a camera everywhere with you? It is very difficult nowadays to find a phone that does nothing but make and receive phonecalls.

I currently have a nokia 6280. It's features include: bluetooth, 2mp camera, mp3 player, radio, calender, email and wap
i use all of those features except email every day.
I also have a proper digital camera that i use if i want quality photos to print, i use the one on my phone for photos that don't particulary matter.

I wouldn't consider a phone if it didnt' have at least all of the above feature

Unless the camera and all the other bits and bobs on a phone are actual replacements for stand alone ones, I prefer my phone to be just a phone. If I'm a high level exec then maybe I'll have my PA pick up the best and fastest but if not, just give me a phone that works.

The world is changing with so many people having a camera on their phone. Every occassion can now be recorded by a passer -by, be it a tragic accident or a celebrity mug shot. Nothing is sacred ! I myself forget that my mobile has a camera so I am never in that state of mind to "quick take a photo of that !".

I recently upgraded to a Sony Erricson K800i and am amazed at the quality of photos (3.2MP camera) that it can produce. Given good photo conditions (ie. good lighting etc) it produced photos that are crystal clear and can be printed for keepsakes easily.
Admittedly the mobile phone camera/ video function is not as good as actually having a video/still camera, however, for convinieance sake, I love having the phone on me for all those spontaneos photos!

I don't mind having everything in one package, it just depends on how you use it. Admittedly these new phones do possess gadgets etc that I never use, but I guess others do. On the camera issue I think they can be a useful way of storing a few images to show to friends, but they are open to abuse. Also, there is nothing worse than a social gathering in which everyone is just staring into their tiny screens instead of interacting with other people.

I live in Tasmania and have two daughters - one in the ACT and one in Queensland. I find the camera wonderful! I receive photos of my grandchildren which have been taken NOW, - not months later. I loved this feature especially, when my last grandchild was born - we had photos within hours of her being born.

I have a Nokia N80 which I bought specifically for the camera. 10 months later I am still in love with this piece of technology! I adore lifeblog (a visual diary program that comes with Nokia phones) I use the MP3 player when I excercise, I havent bothered with a paper based diary this year as I use the calender and to-do constantly. I haven't got to the emailing bit yet and haven't managed to sych the phone with Google Calender but I figure I will when I really need to. I have lots of fabulous pictures of my kids and other stuff and I don't double book myself as I can always check what I have on. I get the things I said I'd do done because the to do list is right there in my face all day and if I need to I can set an alarm to remind myself.
Really life enhancing little gadget.

As a busy mum running her own business, usually I just scrape in the door to see my kids performances at school, trailing briefcases and having forgotten my digital camera.

That is where the mobile phone camera comes in handy, Grainy - yes, Printable - no, worth it - 100 times yes. The look on my kids faces when we get home and they see their photo as "wallpaper" on mums phone is worth all of the hassle. Of course if the Tim Tam genie just happened to pop in and organise a 5 mega pixel camera on my phone I would be more than grateful (of course the phone would also have to look good and not be the size of a brick :)

I have a relatively new phone which is costing me $20 per month to own. I got what I think is a good deal, with 50 free text messages per month. It has a reasonable camera and I can listen to music but I also own a digital camera which was pretty cheap and of a very good quality. I much prefer to use the camera rather than the phone due to the photo quality, but I had to use the camera on my phone recently so that I could have a photo taken with Kevin Bloody Wilson. It is also nice to have photos of the kids with me on the phone when I go out as I love to show them off, but I wouldn't go out of my way to pay big bucks for a good phone with all the fancy extras on it.

The best digital camera you can find is the one esigned specifically to be a digital camera. Although the picture quality is getting better I still beleive a phone is a phone and a camera is a camera. I must adit though, I do have some pretty cute pictures of my dog on my phone but those I could do with out.

I bought one of the super slim motorola v3 when they came out and it is by far the worst phone I have ever purchased. I had to get it repaired and I also have a bunch of dust trapped between the screen and the outer shell of the phone which means i can't see most of the screen...stick with a nokia, although i've been told that the new flashy nokias can be quite slow as they cram in lots of features, but have not sufficiently upgraded the memory.

I know some people with Samsung phones - in particular the E250, which appears to be a great phone and has some fun photo features.

I recently purchased a Nokia N73 with a 3.1 Megapixel Camera that takes fairly good quality photos and I have found it extremely useful. But other than that I only use my phone to make calls and send sms messages, I dont use any of the other services my phone comes with.

Up until the end of last year I had a mobile phone for phoning, and that's about all it did. One of those Nokia phones that sell (these days) for a song. My phone was upgraded by my other half for several reasons. I now have a Samsung Z150. (3G, email capable, web capable, WAP, multimedia etc etc).
The advantage of this phone is the lack of weight. I love that it is so light and so slim. I didn't want or expect bells and whistles on any phone I owned, but now I have them. So I will use those I can afford to. And there you have the bottom line. Cost. It costs an arm and a leg to buy the thing, and then to use many of the functions on the new phones. I enjoy a lot of the new gadgets it comes with, but they are certainly a luxury. I just wish I had the time to work them all out as much as I would like to.
Technology is advancing in leaps and bounds. This is early days in the cange in the way we communicate when mobile. It makes me wonder how much longer we will have 'landline' phones for. Phone boxes are as rare as hens teeth now. The assumption is that everyone has a mobile phone. At the Uni I attend, they don't ask us for our home phone number, but our mobile number. Even if we give our home phone number, they use the mobile number in preference.

I have a Nokia 6101 with a VGA Camera. I find I use the camera quite often just because I have it on me, and the photos I take are always excellent and spontaneous. The only problems I have with these pictures is the quality, but this will be improved when I update my phone, and my phones limited storage capacity and difficulty in removing pictures which is another factor I hope to rectify in the purchase of my new phone. I have used the phone to take pictures of stuff for University and find the major benefit of a camera in a phone is that I take my phone everywhere and always have the ability to take a shot when I feel it is needed. Despite the improvement in Digital Camera Quality over the last several years, I don't see the need to be able to take photos above 5MP, and with Phone Camera technology rapidly increasing, this shouldn't be a problem for much longer... as you can take decent quality photos with phones already available.
In terms of other phone features, I always use the Calendar in my phone, I mark down dates I meet people, my shifts for work, reminders and other daily tasks. For the month of May, I had Calendar entries on 18 of the days, some of which had more than one task.
I do not use the internet on my phone, it was one feature I planned to use before purchasing, but for me it is too expensive and slow. I like the idea of the portability of the internet and access from anywhere, but as a Uni student with only a casual job, I cannot afford this feature at the current time in my life.
In terms of Video and Audio I feel that phones don't come close to meeting my storage needs. With almost 40GB of music I use my iRiver, which combines audio, video, radio and file storage.
I enjoy integration of my gadgets, earlier in the night I was discussing with a friend the inconvenience of 'pocket bulge', cause by too many things stored in pockets, by the time you take into consideration, phone, wallet, keys, MP3 player, camera, Palm, you can't carry around all these items, but I would find access to these objects quite useful at various points throughout my day.

I constantly use the camera on my mobile phone, it's so much more handy to have around than a digital camera. It's the best way to capture those unplanned moments that you would actually like to remember. As I never carry a camera around with me, especially not on a night out when you're usually going to find it the most useful. Fantastic idea.

When the N73 came out, i jumped at the chance to get one.
I know, it was probably a very silly move especially considering the cost, etc... but my last phone happened to die, and this seemed to have everything i could ever want... well nearly.

The option of a 3.2 megapixel camera was an obvious reason. Why carry a phone and a camera around everywhere when they can be built as one. Now a 3.2m camera isnt going to take the worlds most highly-anticipated shots, but it does a very good job of people and places on the fly. If i wanted world-class photo shoots, I'd buy an SLR.

The web browser has been a godsend aswell. very helpful for looking up street directions when lost, or googling that impossible thing that no-one knows.

Video calling has not been personally explored, as i am sure some people would probably not want to see me at the best of times.

Overall, the camera is very useful, but given a second chance i would not spend quite so much on a phone for such features that are not typically used to make calls with!

The more you can cram into one single item the better. It's gotta have decent bits with no compromise on quality if the phone is to be succesful.

Most of my friends have photo's on their phones but I have yet to see a printed version as they are often too grainy to print. Then when the memory gets full on the phone these files get deleted...so photo's on phones are just flashy gadgets and not until they get to at least 3-4 megapixels will they be more useful than a fancy toy

I love my phone, and have one with a web browser and rely heavily on it now (especially for news, weather etc). And because I always have it with me it's really convenient to just use it as a diary. The camera is convenient (again it's always just there, whenever I might need it). With friends and family living long distances away it's a nice way of showing them what's going on. Working in a school is a problem, though, as we have a rule that phones are not to be used during school hours, but the I wonder if that's stopping us from using them as a learning tool.

no, I use my computer connection for Weather - I have it set direct to Auckland via my fav. I've not used news feature at all.

Decide first what you features you want in a phone and then go shopping. If its not important to you dont pay for it. Nowadays you cant find a phone without radio - though Ive never used it - its not convenient if you have to carry ear phones around too! My phone also has MP3 capabilities so may download some tunes, but wasnt important to me so didnt get a phone with the huge memory necessary to truely appreciate this function. My phoe came free on a $29/month cap deal from Vodaphone with $150 cap. So was a great deal. Has a touch screen and in funky metalic pink! It my new toy and I love it!

no, I use my computer connection for Weather - I have it set direct to Auckland via my fav. I've not used news feature at all.

Decide first what you features you want in a phone and then go shopping. If its not important to you dont pay for it. Nowadays you cant find a phone without radio - though Ive never used it - its not convenient if you have to carry ear phones around too! But if a camera is not important to you then dont buy a phone with a fancy one. There will probably be a camera on the phone anyway, but if its only a 2MP then you arent paying for it - its just a standard feature. It was important to me as I dont have a digital camera. I just had to buy a new mobile phone, cause mine died. The frustrations of buying a phone now. All I want is one that rings, can send sms's and I can have a voicemail. I want to be able to see the writing on the phone and the letters on the keypad. They show me phones that can bring me up the internet, GPS system, do videos, take pictures. They looked at me strangely when i just asked....isnt there a simple phone for me with just what I want. Bahhhhhhhh technologoy........I too like to use my digital camera and computer and video camcorder not use a super-duper phone with everything on it.........next they will be telling me I can use my phone to cook up a meal (hmmmmmmmmmm NOW THAT, I WOULD LOVE lol)

i think camera phones are a necessity in today's changing political, economic and technological environment. whosoever can capture information first, quickly and with good quality videos or pictures, the world will benefit from it. so i guess if everyone purchase a good quality handset we could expect good quality lives and standard of living. also the walls created by religion, colour and race would disappear all together.

I have a Motorolla V3xx and hardly use the added features, it is just as easy to listen to the radio or tv for the news and weather, I bought a phone that I thought would suit my needs, as it does but it is hardly used for these extras, phone calls and smsing is all that a mobile phone is for...

Thanks hoges.  I am really interested in using a phone as a web browser.  It just doesn't work well for me.  I would interested to see how many others use their mobiles for news and weather???

I love the camera on my phone. It's excellent for taking snaps of my baby, especially when I'm out and about - you never know when he's going to do something new, and I love to get it all on camera. I'm surprised how clear the pictures are when uploaded to my pc, too.

Apart from the camera, I'm happy enough with being able to take calls, send SMS, play games to pass the time, and use the calculator & alarm functions. I've not yet used the radio or e-mail capabilities.

wildboy69 , its back to school for you, as you have to learn to spell.

Oops, back to school for you, too. Its = belonging to it, it's = it is. Alas, a very common error, even in the printed media. That, and apostrophes where they don't belong.

These things are becomming the new swiss army knives and i for one think its marvelous to have all things able to fit into my poket my camera, phone, PDA, MP3player, movie player and GPS all in one.
I own the nokia 9500 and its more like a computer than a phone i have had it for 4 years and it has been the ducks nuts, although 4 years is old for a phone its only now other phones are catching up to it as it was very advances when it was released im egerly awaiting the next upcomming modle the E90 and only then will i upgrade from the trusty 9500 which still works perectly.
point of the story is ive been bitten by the technology bug and its made these high end phones impossible to go past my brother and dad both have Nseries nokias the 70 & 73 and they have outstanding features and applications that can be installed on them, if you know how to utalise them to their full potential then they are well worth the money and much more if not then just go get a non smart phone that will just make calls and text

I recently purchased a new Nokia phone with a 2.0 Megapixel camera, and was a bit sceptical about how good it would really be. but after using it in good situations, like in the day time with the settings all correct i have actually had some very good results. the photos would be of marginally lesser quality than my actual digital camera. i think its great having multiple devices in one, i dont always carry my digi camera everywhere, but now i dont need to.

Yes, I agree with that. some of the devices are very useful. For example real estate agents and property managers need the camera sometimes in their jobs. Also the average person might use it to record an accident or capture an unusual event. Very useful. My crash repairer uses it for before and after shots. Calendar is also handy for appointments. I don't use my mobile to access the net but I know many people do.
