Do you like shopping? Does it feel like a world of possibilities or a world of pain? What do you think retailers could do to make shopping more fun? Have you had any great shopping experiences recently that you can share? What was it about the experience that made it great?

I like shopping if it’s with friends or if it’s about buying stuff for me as selfish as it sounds, though I still find it boring sometimes. To be honest I don’t think there is a way to make shopping more fun. People will only be interested in what they what they want to buy. I always find the occasional shopping spree more enjoyable than going shopping often. Though sales do real me in and make me feel good that I’m saving extra money.

Just way too many choices and the stress of getting the best deal is overwhelming sometimes. World of pain

Being stuck in 2 milk bars for 18 hours a day plus a 1/2 hour drive each way to home and back, plus working in a factory for about12 1/2 years. Now after 32 years of freedom I still feel great delight in going shopping and browsing, and I am a mere male.

no - my shopping experiences have all been 'a world of pain'. here at port mac there is never enough 'check out chicks' - ever, apart from when coles had their days when there was all check outs 'manned' - they wouldnt have done it if there wasnt always a heap of complaints.

I hate shopping generally. The last time I went to buy a pair of trousers I walked into the store and said to the shop assistant "I hate shopping so I like to get it over and done with in as short a time as possible. If I am still here in 5 minutes time you will have failed in your quest to sell me what I want". Fortunately she was a good sales assistant (very rare these days!) and I was able to leave with a pair of brown trousers which fitted me well in under 5 minutes.

I hate shopping and only go when it's needed Find shopping centres are to crowded and most shopping staff are or can be lazy in attending to the needs of people

I hate shopping! If its for groceries that's fine as you have to survive. But to wander all over the shopping centre, just browsing and trying things on to me is now a waste of time and time is something I don't have much time either. This also makes me depressed when I see things that I like and can't afford them too. Once upon a time I did. Not now. I guess I must of out grown it

Don't mind shopping. I like to look at new products and perhaps buy it to try.

Archer says I like shopping I do most of mine online which I prefer to do since being unwell for the past few years. I love the sales when you see something you loved before the sale and now it is discounted. I don't like Christmas shopping though it is so hard to find different things for everyone.

archer replys I enjoy shopping mainly for clothe I have a wardrobe full I just love the experience of finding what I want sometimes I find what I want but they don't have my size so I have to wait for them to order it in. I do shop online alot recently I shopped at St Frock which is in Sydney but what I don't like about them is they don't refund your money

  • 12th Oct 2015 04:14pm

Due to having to watch my spending, I now find most shopping a world of pain because there are SO many things that I find that I love but can never afford it. I constantly ask myself - "Do I need this or is it more of a want?" - this usually makes me walk away and means that I am debt free. Going to op shops is another matter though - when I find an absolute bargain, i.e: designer label for a few dollars, etc., then I feel over over the moon!

I hate shopping for groceries because i am on a very limited budget and often have to go without some things on my list. I hate shopping for clothes because of the same reason... lack of money and often the prices are out of my range

Littlelegs
  • 25th Sep 2015 04:31pm

I am not a big fan of shopping. I only go when it is absolutely necessary, such as those times when you are in desperate need of some new clothes or shoes as just about all of yours is in tatters. I have just purchased 3 pairs of shorts today due to his reason and was fortunate enough to have arrived at the store today (in this case, the store was Autograph) and they had a 30% off sale happening until Monday, therefore saving me $36.

Whether I like shopping depends on a number of things. Whether it is a nice shopping centre (with some area where you can see outside), whether you are meeting somewhere there, and mostly whether I can find what I am after for that day (which is usually not the case, as I am 4foot 9). So mostly it may start out nice, but becomes an exercise in frustration and usually I am not meeting anyone there to at least make it a social occasion.
Shopping centres could help by having outdoor eating areas which are pleasant (like Robina shopping centre with the fountain outside), and shops could help by catering for all and every size of woman (eg. the larger woman down to the short woman).

I like looking in shops like the Reject Shop. At least there you are under no misconception that you are paying for quality and then get crap. I shop for groceries with my wife's list and only get to deviate or get something extra on rare occasion. The pitfall of being retired. We rarely clothes shop but when I go to get basics items I hate when they have changed the brands that are quality to cheap imported stuff. And wouldn't you figure, the prices are higher.

  • 17th Sep 2015 07:35am

It completely depends on what I am shopping for. I love a bargain so sale signs attract me, especially if they include things I am looking for. Retailers could certainly make shopping more fun if they had super-duper bargains with huge (and I mean HUGE) reductions in prices.

Lately, I'm incredibly frustrated on the shopping front: for example, clothing wise, either I see something I like on the other people or in the magazines but I'm unable to find something similar in the shops. Or I find the online shop which sells what I'm interested in, but then this is either not deliverable to where I live or the customs and delivery charges just keep accumulating.

  • 16th Sep 2015 04:11pm

It depends upon what for really. Being a typical male I prefer knowing what I want, buying it and leaving. That said I do like wandering a book store, or checking out different bottles of wine.

To make an experience great, it is all about the customer service. I recently received excellent customer service at a hotel, the Y Hotel in Sydney South. It really makes a difference to your day.

I like shopping to a point, but in this day and age I find there is far too many things to choose from. We are bombarded with new products all the time, and it just ends up giving me a headache.

Has to be done , like it or loathe it!!!
Can become an addiction if you allow it.
Love a bargain , but not prepared to buy junk. Quality is important.
Clothes & Shoe shopping : Fed up - I have yet to find a manufacturer who has a standard size eg I will fit into a size Large in one item & find another item from same label either too small or too loose. So if I'm a size Large , I now lug a size medium & XL also to the fitting room. Online shopping is virtually impossible due to this size fluctuations.
Shoes!!! It gets worse. I loved a particular [expensive] brand for comfort reasons, and went instore - my usual size was now too small [short at the back] & a size up was too wide. I actually took my old shoe and sized it against a new pair & realised they had actually made the shoe shorter in lenght. I showed it to the sales people ....you guessed it, total indifference / shrug. One told me they now used a different manufacturer.
Appliances : I find most retailers lay on the sweetness thickly when they scent a sale ; and are the opposite when the product breaks.
I have had some good experiences at Myer Garden City. Once I saw some luggage - buy 1 get 1 free, it applied only to certain items and I inadvertently chose one to which the offer did not apply. The manager promptly gave me the deal. I returned a broken appliance there once, again absolutely no hesitation , the item was immediately replaced.
Online : though I love to shop online , experiences have been varied. The worst is the product looking great on the internet and the opposite in reality. It's a pain to return, though some companies offer free returns and some collect from home. Woolworths has changed their online experience, it's so awful now, takes longer to shop online than going in store!!
I have one policy : if a retailer treats me well, I will return!!! And if you treat me badly, I will never return, no matter how great your store or how wonderful prices you offer. So train your employees to smile and know your product.
Well that's my 2 cents worth.

shopping in itself can be very good therapy, it all depends on your need to shop, whether it's through need, neccessity, or pleasure, i also prefer to shop alone, no list, no plan, just see what takes my fancy

I like shopping for gifts for others. If I can get them all in the one store, I prefer that. Going to lots of big, crowded shops makes me feel a bit overwhelmed. I don't like clothes shopping for myself. The shops that do sell plus sized clothes that suit me, are usually way beyond my budget. I like it when they have sales. Ordinary department stores like KMart or Big W usually don't have a very good or nice range of plus size clothing. The tops are just horrible. They often go down to the knees, and are rather tight around the belly area, which is not the kind of look I like. I often have to shop for clothes for me on ebay, where there is a much larger range of nice, good priced plus size clothes.

I dislike shopping; because I work in retail. It is a pain because people can be rude, pushy, demanding. It is my world of pain.
Shopping is something I loathe due to having to being around people all day everyday. I prefer online shopping.
No memorable shopping experiences sorry.

I love to shop. It doesn't matter whether it is food shopping or retail shopping. I love to see what is on special in the supermarket and what I can buy for our meals during the week. I like to have little treats in awhile and you can get them on special every now and then. Regarding retail therapy, I think they do a good job of enticing shoppers to shop in their stores. Most shops are very airy and have a wide selection of clothing, shoes, sleepwear, toys, technology and household goods. The stores I don't like are the small poky shops that are crammed full of stuff that it makes it hard to walk around and find anything.

Being a male, I have a love hate relationship with shopping. I don't mind grocery shopping because it's a necessity and I love great food and cooking at home. Fashion shopping is a bit of a chore, but if I'm after a new gadget or electronic device then I put my whole heart and soul into the effort. A recent positive experience was with the retailer Myer, they have the best brands, the best prices and great service. I had a great experience buying some new kitchen knives recently and the staff couldn't have been more helpful.

I enjoy all forms of shopping: groceries, fashion, online purchases. I love the excitement of finding a bargain or stumbling upon a sale. I like the seasonal change in fashion and like to keep my wardrobe up to date. I have my favorite retailers who know my shopping habits and preferences. One key retailer I always get superb customer service and attention from is the fashion retailer David Lawrence.

I am now in my 40's and in my 20's in particular I loved shopping but now I find it more of a chore. I try and buy online as much as possible as I don't enjoy going to the shops. Being a vegan and not wearing leather I especially don't like shoe shopping as the nice shoes are all leather and generally the cheaper/ugly shoes are non leather.

Mmm... shopping... not my forte , I regret. My wife on the other hand is an excellent shopper, with my money. Me going shopping is like bamboo under the fingernails. They need to install a bar at every shop so the men can have a drink while the female can shop. No great shopping experiences... just the quick ones.

My sister came to stay this weekend, as her husband had to go to SA! Wow we had a great weekend. Markets Saturday and Sunday mornings but best was Friday afternoon, we have a newphew's wedding coming up and a niece's 21st so what fun trying on different outfits together, it has been a long time since we had so much time together, not having to please anyone but our selves. A great weekend, shopping, eating and drinking with a show on Saturday night. BLISS!

I don't mind shopping, as long as I have a goal in mind that I can achieve! I'm open to new brands and ideas, so I guess from that perspective, it's about possibilities rather than pain. That said, I'm not a fan of shopping at peak times, as crowds send me a bit nuts. Too many people. Retailers could put on more kid-friendly options, like Ikea does (their kids' play/drop n shop area looks fantastic). I don't recall any great shopping experiences recently - mostly shopping is just an average experience. I never walk away feeling like I've had outstanding customer service.

Oh Dear, I really dislike shopping. I have a list of things I want and I do it as quickly as I can. I do not actually do recreational shopping but I have some dear friends who adore it and like company. I will go because I love them and make every effort to be interested and not spoil their day but in reality I cannot wait until it is over. A great shopping experience for me would be setting out to buy something specific and doing that quickly.

Yes I love shopping and they could make it better by not putting prices at holiday times. That includes mother's/father's day too. I find it fun and relaxing most of the time. It's harder with more crowds. Not a huge thing but it was great for me that I could change the expiry date of my go card at my local newsagency instead of my nearest train station. Win for me.

It depends on what I'm shopping for. I love shopping for things for my home, gifts for friends, etc.. Shopping for jeans...that's a world of pain. One of the shops that I frequent keeps a record of every item I've ever purchased with them. It is very easy to go in for returns or have things repaired/replaced, and if I can't remember a size on something I can easily ask and they can look it up in my account.

The only time I don't have fun shopping is when I either feel guilty for spending a lot of money or when I've searched high and low for something that I can't find.

i like shopping if and when i have the money to go do some good shopping like i needed some makeup, so i went to a city store very nice good service and very quck service being saturday i was very happy - retailers are finding it hard there is so much competition but it depends what and where you are looking - i will recommend this store priceline as i got very good service and prices were reasonable - of course you gotta be smart and chck out all avenues for, best prices
- as for food shopping there should be much better service here in WA i like IGA and woolworths but lately woolworths are not improving and with Aldi on the way people will, leave and go elsewhere

I never used to like shopping at all. Now though I love grocery shopping, weird I know. But recently my partner and I changed our lifestyle and now eat much better, so I find it fun and interesting discovering new foods and healthier options. As far as general shopping I don't mind it when I have money to spend and when it isn't too busy. I can not stand it when you go into a store and there is no room to walk around nor can you see the products properly.

I hate shopping in person, sales staff go from one extreem to other, never one around, or one who is over enthusiastic & doesn't leave you alone. I much prefer shopping on line, can take my time & compare prices. Only draw back is the big discrepencies in sizing, which isn't a problem if there are free returns, but if I have to pay postage twice, the item works out very expensive.
I loathe shopping for groceries in store but have no choice as shopping online isn't an option for the rural area I live in.

To have a great experience you have to find a shopping centre you like first. One that has easy parking and feels just right! It needs to have shops you like to shop at or need plus some extra surprises and not get too crowded either. Yes, Xmas comes earlier each year. At the shopping centre I went to last, it had a wonderful shop with all things Xmas. It was so nice to just wander through! Of course the high light was booking a trip at the Travel agency!

I guess it depends on what type of shopping you are talking about. If it is grocery shopping, it doesn't excite me too much.
I enjoy looking at different types of furniture, also if the lay-out is good, and easy to get around to view everything. Also, nice relaxing music to be played whilst you are walking around would be lovely I feel.!
Can't say I have had any great shopping experiences of late, as I have not been shopping.! The last time I went looking some 12 months ago, the lady helping me was so helpful, and very patient. The lady had a lot of good ideas, matching things with furniture as well, she really was a delight.!

How I used to love shopping! Now however I avoid shopping malls, window shopping along the strips and although I browse endlessly through the online boutiques with such enticing offers, I rarely venture any further.
Now I am a retiree whose hard earned savings have almost disappeared and whose pension just won't extend beyond grocery shopping and paying the ever increasing bills just to have power, communication connections, petrol and other basic needs. Shopping is an indulgence I have to deny myself, except for the basics. I know I am far from alone and I feel so sorry for those Mums struggling to clothe, feed and buy little treats for their children. That is why retail sales are down, small businesses are closing and Op shops are busier than ever.

its a really nice sunny day today. I love shopping, its like a world of possibilities.
I think retailers should have reward programme. like every time you visit their store, you get points. or you get scratch ticket where you could win something instant from that store. actually that would be cool.

I do like shopping but it depends on what are the items, if it's women apparels, food, groceries then I would be greatly interested. However if it's like mechanical equipment then I don't think I would be interested.

I think by having something like seasonal sale, promotions, samples and demonstrations will really boost customers' desire to shop. Although price matters, but a great customer service is usually the main thing that makes me want to shop at the same place again.

I love getting new things but I HATE shopping!
- Mainly it's the rude customers and untrained employees who don't care about their jobs, that turn me off.
- I'd love the stores to turn off the music so I can hear myself think and so I can also hear the staff's response when I ask them questions about products.
- Young employees need to be taught how to act, how to speak to people and to show respect for themselves as well as their employers. Too often their "don't care" attitude is frustrating and very off-putting.
- I prefer small shopping strips to large shopping centres.
- Make the parking free and without time-limits.
- Had a great shopping experience in a small bookshop two days ago. The staff knew their products, were welcoming without being fake and gushy, offered help but left me alone to browse as I indicated...but were there ready to help when I had questions. No loud music in the shop and no smelly perfumes. Just a cosy shop, well lit and displayed books .....and good customer service!

I love music but not when I'm shopping. I am hard of hearing and when the stores play it so loud I can't talk to the staff, then I get frustrated.
We don't have any QBE bookstores nearby. I'm pleased to hear you get great service there.

YEP but it seems to be getting less and less, I think the supermarkets are trying to get better attitudes in place. That bookstore you mention, it really sound like a QBE store as I get real help from their assistants when needed. Self serve checkouts are OK most of the time but they seem to be full when I go to pay.

I absolutely hate shopping so painful. It make's hard with my Osteo-Arthritis when I need to sit down and there isn't any where to sit. I haven't had a good shopping experience for more than 20 years.

I love shopping but as the years go buy there is not the same range of clothing that suits the older person. In years gone by it was necesssary to do a lot of shopping for my children. I loved to sew too and choosing materials and patterns was a lovely shopping experience. Alas those days have past by and my needs have reduced too. However I still enjoy browsing and noting all the fashion ideas that are being recycled.

I christmas shop all year long - if I see it I grab it ( or lay-by). The gift needs to be personal, not how much.. Next.. I smile at the person serving me, they cope a lot of abuse from customers and a smile can brighten their day BUT if they speak rudely to me - I say in a firm voice " Excuse me what did you say". That usually brings a quick change of attitude.. Next.. DO YOU BUY AUSTRALIAN OR SHOP LOCALLY? Keep money in our own country.

I have a love/hate relationship with shopping. I only shop when I need to and than I look for what is needed and more on, not take hours to choose an outfit. I grab what I want but if not sure ( about an item) I will carry it with me while I look or leave the store and only come back if I really want/need it. I'm the same with food, a quick duck in, buy & out again.

I only go shopping when I have to and usually know exactly what I want, make my purchase and leave.

I am happy to shop although I prefer an hour at a time - too much to go all day. I like to think that I have a bargain so any voucher or discount helps me. And just to let you know, both Myer & DJ's in SA have their Christmas departments in store - UGH!!

There are so many facets to my busy life, shopping is totally done on a need-to-basis :) ! Living semi-rurally shopping on line late at night with a mug of green tea beside me is a joy and a pleasure! Food and wine of course: how much daily and weekly choice at the push of a button. Price comparisons so easy! Everything available: well, sometimes a wee bit too much temptation as far as books and classical music CDs are concerned! And spices: my downfall . . .And one soon learns all the firms which seem to have 10pm - 2 am sales! As far as shopping centres and malls go: none really closer than about 40 kms and window shopping has always been a bore and timewaster for me :) !

I LOATHE shopping. I loathe the people, the atmosphere, the shoving, the rudeness, the lack of compassion and respect from customer "service" staff, I hate their lack of inteterst in their product or their customers, I hate that there are precious few places I can even get clothes to fit (though this is changing) and they're all imported crap and really poor quality and poorly fitting and badly shaped and fecking polyester!. I loathe food shopping and I'd be happy if I never set foot in another supermarket ever again (but the family needs to eat, and I don't trust the online pickers to choose the best item). I loathe trying to shop in male-dominated arenas like cars, tyres, electrical, DIY and the like, since all they do is try and pull the wool over a female's eyes, then try and rip them off in the end. I loathe that shopping is no longer about service but only about making the most amount of money. What would make shopping better? Australian produce, excellent quality, made for our conditions, beautiful local food, honesty, integrity and true customer service. I don't care about gimmicks and freebies if awesome products are offered honestly and with exceptional service. Australian stores are way behind on all counts.

You really do appear to hate shopping Ziah and I disagree with most of what you say, BUT I am 100% with you on the present quality of imported clothing etc and will only buy Australian when I can find it, AND that includes what I purchase in supermarkets.

Totally agree about synthetic clothing. I live in Queensland and with the humidity here man made fabrics are impossible to wear, Why cannot we buy well made clothing in natural fabrics? I am able to sew but fabric shops are thin on the ground and Spotlight fabrics are mostly either synthetic or synthetic blends. Grrr!

Yes I do like shopping in general though most of my shopping is mainly browsing. Absolutely detest Christmas shopping as I have totally run out of ideas as to what to buy for anyone. Lots of retailers could be a lot more helpful instead of making it so clear that they are not suited to their profession. Can't say I've ever had a fantastic shopping experience so can't comment on that one.

I was looking for a particular Perfume, I know what I like to wear as far as Perfume goes and I do feel that I am very selective, so off I went to Myer Chadstone and checked-out "Jo Malone" where I met a wonderful Sales Assistant whom helped Me decide what Fragrance I am attracted to.
She wrote down all the names of the Fragrances which I found to be to My liking so I did not have to go through the whole process again !
And this Sales Assistant was so savvy. She knew Her stuff...!
I will always look for Her when I am back in Myers, this would be the only reason that I would return to that Store !

I love shopping, especially clothes. Nowadays i am trying to control my mind when i am in the clothes section . Earlier, when i am going for shopping, even if i don't really need any clothes also , i will buy on seeing the offers :)
It will be fun if the retailers offer more offers to make the shopping pleasant.
I don't have any special shopping experiences to share with.

I like shopping very much. But unfortunately due to financial matters, I have to restrict myself into temptation to do impulse shopping.

To make shopping more fun, always create some atmosphere or ambiance like sales, clearance or gifts for every purchase made.

As it was Fathers day, therefore, I did great shopping at Myer using coupons, gift cards to purchase the products that I have been looking forward to, especially when it's discounted at 35% off, plus if you purchase $100 or more, you get $15 off. It was great
