I thought a smart phone was one that had internet connwction?? A friend of mine has an old phone with internet connections and was trying to get help with one of those emergency service monitoring company as she's had two strokes already and wanted the comfort of knowing she could get help if she felt unwell etc. Unfortunately for some reason she couldn't download the necessary app the company use so she was told she needs to buy a smartphone. So we are both in the dark as to what then is the definition of a smartphone and what do they do?? She is in her 70's and I'm 54 but not tech savy so your help would be appreciated?

ok, the idea of a smart phone is such like that of the popular brands ie iPhone, Samsung, Nokia. just to name a few. most commonly a "smart phone" is a phone with a touch screen style interface design, with a few buttons on the sides to control volume, power on /off the device, operate the camera function etc. and a single {physical} button on the lower of the screen. there are also the "in house" brands that of the service providers, like telstra,
but this is just a thought as i am better at showing than telling, i hope this helps a bit, but all in all if possible go and see your local service provider and ask as to what would be a suitable basic smart device for your friend to used based on their requirements

I believe a smart phone must either be connected to the Apple store or the android store. So must have the capability to download apps.

Wikipedia puts it as follows "smartphone (or smart phone) is a mobile phone with an advanced mobile operating system"
