Is the next generation going to be strong enough? Are we breading the natural strength out of our immune systems?

I think that this is a growing problem, where we are producing "bubble children". I babysit and the children I see are so much more restricted than I was in what they eat, and have access to. As they grow and attend school they get sick so much more easily a lot of the time. A real shame. I love that Australian healthcare system is better than most countries, but it risks becoming the infamous "Nanny state", as more and more parents subscribe to the obsessive health recommendations.

Everything today is 'anti bacterial' - it's no wonder that people are constantly coming down with something! Our bodies are supposed produce antibodies to help us fight and become stronger - but this isn't going to happen if our houses become so totally germ free that the moment you step outside the immune system crumbles!

Its been said that the 23rd of December the world will end. Well I'm a sceptic when it comes to that one, however the changes with in our economical situation shows us that, we are now following laws that prevent disaplin to taken and distributed for growing and learding. Yes, it looks as though the next generation my not be strong enough. It has nothing to so with immune systems but ingerance and dis respect.

Yes I think we are becoming weaker and lazier and they just don't seem to care enough about other people. Too focused on what they look like and what people will think of them.

No the next generation is screwed!!!! More children today have brittle bone disease because parents are terrified of skin cancer.
Common colds last longer because with all of our hand sanitisers and air disinfectants kids are no longer being exposed to common germs to build an immunity.
Sure we immunise children, but what is the point of immunisation when one day a common cold will be known to kill?
Then there's the other thing that the next generation will face.
In a natural disaster these kids won't survive. Asde from their lack of immunity, these kids constantly sit behind a screen one wa or another. What if they do manage to survive a major disaster but need to build a fire to keep warm? If there is no mobile phone towers or electricity googling "how to build a fire" isn't possible is it?
Nope all this molly coddling is only going to screw up the next generation.

What was wrong with kids getting out into the back yard and getting all dirty?
We have changed the way we live, we move less during our days and eat more so to make up for it we need to exercise the hard way. We need a bit more balance other wise our children will be very clean, pale, isolated and nervous of not only strangers but meeting others socially.

No way. I am a grandparent and I am concerned that children today cannot assess risks, (because they are not allowed to take any), have reduced natural immunity, (because their environment is too clean and full of disinfectants and antibiotics),have less social skills (because they play computer games, watch tv etc. instead of talking, reading, exercising with play, less manners and respect for others. We were and are the strong generation. Have we let the future generations down?

Seriously doubt it - there seems to be a general lack of work ethic and an attitude that they deserve all without the effort. Health wise we are definately worse off - we are one of the most obese nations on earth and even those that are not obese are not necessarily healthy. Our own lifestyle choices and allowing our children to spend hour upon hour in front of tv, gaming consoles, mobile phones etc - we are breeding a lazy idle generation.

We are breading the strength out of our immune system by using drugs and living a wrong life style. At the same time we extend our live expeactations by creating that live style and an artifisial immune system based on drugs.

No. Evolution doesn't work as simply as that. Richard Dawkins' book "The Greatest Show on Earth" explains it well.

I think you mean breeding?
No - immune systems adapt, like any other system in an organism. Adaptation to the environment and surrounding circumstances is a natural phenomenon that ensures organisms endure, and live on to successfully reproduce and gradually mutate.
Change will happen, and the human immune system adapts around those changes. However, it is also inevitable that all these small and gradual alterations mean that things do not remain the same. For example, someone living in a city in the 18th century had immunity to the diseases rampant then - they would be totally vulnerable to our diseases if they suddenly reappeared now and faced hepatitis and HIV/AIDS.

See what I mean? And we have become very vulnerable to TB and smallpox because they have been distant from us, and out of circulation for so long.

Modern society is breeding softies expecting everything to be given to them instead of earned. In a lot of cases, we need to experience or be exposed to things in order to build up our natural defences so when something of adversity is faced we are able to defend ourselves. The human race needs to go back to the Book of Leviticus which actually lists various food types that the human body is designed to thrive on. Unfortunately I too have been lazy in modern life and now had to go back to these basics to survive. Sustenance has now won over taste.

A visit to any childrens hospital will show just how many auto immune diseases are now prevalent throughout your state. Multiply the numbers by the number of states and you will get an idea of just how much we are weakening our childrens immune systems, by feeding them hormone and gm laden foods, sterilising things excessively and poisoning the air we breathe with chemicals and toxic pollutants. When will we learn that the world depends on our children ...our children are our future. I have a two year old granddaughter who could die because her immunisation caused a virus which triggered her immune system to attack her own skin and muscles. We are living with this on a daily basis so understand full well the dangers being caused to our immune system. We must care for our children with clean air and chemical free foods, and not be pressured into immunising them with every new vaccine that pharmaceutical companies develope..

This question just shows your age: every generation has those who bemoan the state of the next. Get over yourself and get on with your life.

And people did not live for hundreds of years in biblical times. The lived to forty if they were lucky. No hooky calendars, just myth.

Thank you for saying it is the living standard. I agree with you now. But, like you say, you can't really blame gen y for being like gen y, for being raised this way.

Yes I agree! Hygeine is good, but going overboard does not let us develop our immune systems, as our bodies do not have the viruses to develop against.

I think the stories your thinking of are from the bible, actual history will tell you that people died very young,40 was OLD and we are living much longer. now because of our diets, clean water to drink and health care. Even in recent history (the last100 years) people did not live as long as we are doing now. We will just have to learn to be strong, do more with ourselves . Lean to use our minds as well as our bodies.

If you look back to the bible times, people lived for hundreds of years and women were conceiving and givig birth at very old ages.
Now, we are lucky to live till we're 100 years of age. We aren't getting weaker, we are making bad decisions, abusing our bodies with drugs, bad food and things that are not good for us.

People lived longer in bible times because the calenders were different, and years were calculated differently. I think. I don't think it's just the bad stuff that's makeing us more unhealthy though, we are losing our natural immunity from vaccinations and things like that as well.
