WE all know that there has to be progress and with progress we need better transport. If the Queensland Government wants to put roads through the Koala habitat area, what is the solution to save these animals?

I am sorry I don't have a solution to the problem. However i must say there are too many animals which have had to give up their homes and lives to please us humans.

The world is changing! this is especially evident as the recent earthquake in Christchurch, along with many other "natural disasters" all over the world. Mother nature will always win!!! Look at the film "Avatar" apart from the fantastic graphics. This film can be related to our life on earth. For humans have decided that they are too busy, to keep our Lord God in our hearts everyday. The response from our Lord is that, he will force nature against us. Before our Father closes our time of running planet earth. I, and many others believe that action needs to be taken, to protect. what our lord God has so kindly gave us control of.

Either A:
build underground roads/trains, costly
B: try to rehabilitate the koalas and set up breeding programs to release into the wild

We could have tunnels or pipes under the road or "manmade branches overhead we have a big problem with dead wombats here. The tunnels would work for them poor things

I have heard somewhere (not sure where ) that there are areas that have the road raised and wildlife freeway (tunnels, they have them for wombats and they seem to have been working) under the road, not sure if that would be passable or maybe in dense coverage there could be some kind of bridges built from tree to tree over the road?

Given Government capacity to do whatever it wants and that Koalas have minimal capacity to relocate nearby due to reliance on only one variety of gum tree, it is not looking good. The only hope is that the road is to go through an electorate that can have a massive voter back lash or the koalas are captured and relocated to another area where the gum tree is not under threat or being overharvested by existing koalas. 40 years ago on the border of our farm at the time, we had six manna gums with a family of koalas. Two trees were removed for a road widening. Within 6 months koala carcasses were on the ground mauled by foxes. They had no where to go and eventually weakened to a point where they got caught moving from tree to tree. That koala community had been there for over 20 years and probably before that.

We realy need more funding from government and private road builders to invest in inventors and research companys to develop something that actuauly works to not only talk about something that may work and that actualy does the job of saveing one of the most unique animals we have

i think its unfair to make the roads through their habitat. they are not easy to adapt to other places. best thing is to try relocate them in a similar place.if there is one anymore....

A road was recently put through near where I live, and near bushland area, and I was surprised at how enviro-friendly it is. Any trees that were removed were relocated, not turned into scrap firewood; there is high fences so no animals can get onto the road; and there is an underpass specifically for these animals to get from one side of the bush to the other. Congrats to my local government.

Lani your council sounds like they need a pat on the back but you obviously are in a smaller community where these precautions are a viable and financial possibility. Its not that easy on open...

actually I live in Brisbane, QLD, and about 10km out from the city centre.

Put it simply, fbreed them, "process" them then sell them as the new white meat....

There is no need for comments like this. Koalas arwe important to Australia and as an ammbassador for them I think they need to be saved from Humanity. They generate millions of dollars in tourisim and are lovable at the same time

we must protect our animals and save them

i am an australian living in the south island of new zealand
how strange it is that the possum was introduced here and now it is a pest
the possum does so much damage to the wild life and environment
maybe this is where the koala could be relocated as i did and there could be a place to save them
cheers

I don't live in Qld. but are they able to construct a better & more frequent public transport system ie trains/busses with more frequent times meaning less reliance on roads for cars.

Originally a Queenslander and remember Koalas in trees in the backyard when I was a kid.I am now retired and work in a wildlife park for endangered native animals as a volunteer.I think we have to educate people on how beautiful native animals are and how special they are for the future of our kids.Unfortunately because of progress and expansion Governments do ignore this.I think some great footage recently was the Koalas looking for water in the fire ravaged areas of Victoria and it made a lot of people realise that Koalas do still exist in the wild.My belief is that before expanding roads or a new subdivision thought should be given to relocating these animals before these projects go ahead. As we all know the biggest loss of life is the animals crossing roads.I lived in an area where logging was a big industry and still is but the loggers are aware of the habitats and other areas are made available for these animals .Unfortunately the biggest culprits are the greens who get these areas closed off and the animals have abundant feed right up to the edge of the roads and we all know the end result as well as the fire hazard it creates as we have just seen in Victoria. There would be more than enough people available to trap and relocate these animals before a project goes ahead.Look at when a whale stranding happens people come out of the wood work.If its a native marsupial mouse a Quoll or a Pottaroo who cares but they are just as important to our environment as a whale and deserve the same consideration.

we are encroaching on the wildlife habitat way too much, yes we need roads/highways etc but the poor animals need their homes too, lets stop all this building in their habitats so they can remain...

I agree totally with your comment I am involved with an organisation in a breeding program of endangered Australian Native animals including the tassie devil. We are endeavouring to breed these types of animals in a controlled environment and then release them back into the wild in areas where housing etc will never happen and monitor these animals and there progress as well as their impact on the local flora and fauna its great stuff but you dont read about it in newspapers.Regards Norm Rees

Something has to be done to save our Koalas. We have them in trees not far from us in Brisbane and they are planning to put some road through their habitat.
