So, I’ve got a big weekend planned: after work drinks, party Saturday and dinner with friends on Sunday. Does anyone have favourite drinks for these occasions? Let me know your top 3 for each!

And no doubt I’ll end up with a massive hangover tomorrow. I usually try egg and bacon or tomato juice depending on my mood. Anyone have any tried and tested cures?

3 basic rules.
Don't mix the grape with the grain
Cocktails fit every occasion
Knit one, purl one (ie. Alcoholic drink, glass of water, alcoholic drink, glass of water...).

Always wonder why anyone feels they need to drink alcohol to enjoy themselves , or drink that much they are left with a hangover , surely people can enjoy themselves and have a good time without drinking to excess and making a fool of themselves .After work drinks , whats wrong with water or sugar free softdrink.Party drinks , same again water or sugar free softdrink , even juice , and for sunday dinner, why not try an alcohol free wine ?? ,
No hangover , and no regrets the next day , and no making a fool of yourself by drinking excess amounts of alcohol , wake up with a clear mind and you will find yourself a happier person.

If I don't mix my drinks I don't get hangovers. But if I do mix my drinks I take 2 panadol and drink as much water as possible before bed, I drink a glass of water between each alcoholic drink and in the morning I have a borocca and Maccas hash brown

My favourite drink is water (out of the tap). I drink more of this than anything else, not only for the taste but the obvious benefits. In reasonable quantities it has no nasty effects and certainly no hangover. It has 0 Kj per 100 mL so you don't put on weight. I still don't understand why anyone would want to drink anything that's going to give you a hangover!

For every 2 glasses of alcohol you have drink a glass of water....or try to anyway. You'll feel so much better if you do as it stops dehydraiton that too much alcohol does to you.

Well I'm not a drinker but I've learned these methods along the way, drink milk before you go out it puts a lining in your stomach, also they say seafood the next day helps with the recovery of a hangover.

My favourite drink is kahlua and milk with ice cubes.
A good way to handle a hangover is to drink plenty of water. Also try some orange juice or flat lemonade. Nibble on some dry toast with vegemite, or crackers with vegemite. You will find that your appetite returns later in the day.

The hangover is largely a result of dehydration. The best thing is to drink as much water as you can before going to bed. You may have to drink some more in the morning also. - Been there done that - meg.

Big glass of water before retiring. Keep a glass by the bed to have a gulp when you wake up in the night.

Next day? A can of coke ( it ain't called black doctor in our Bathurst camp for nothing). Someting to eat- not too light or too heavy/greasy/spicy. Add asprin if required.

Favourite hang over cure is to keep drinking, hair of the dog, bloody mary or two, then a couple of beers, then you should get back on the spirits. At some stage meat and potato feed and all is good and the question would be - what hang over.

And if you do ever get that hang over KFC for all the oil you can get into your body or a good lamb chops, mashed potato and gravy, while watching TV so that straight after your meal you can put your dirty plate on the coffee table and use your index finger to slid it as far across the table as you can, then undo the jean button and zips and time for a nappy.

Best cure I found for a hangover is to get a truck licence. That means zero point zero zero BAC. Certainly cut out hangovers by removing the cause and limiting to one or two drinks on my only 24 hour driving break. Bank balance isnt harmed either.

Ohhh can I party too. My favourite party drink is Long Island tea yuumo!! Also a mojito or a fluffy duck dosen't go astray.

My most successful hang over cure is to leave a mix a gastrolye sachet into a bottle of water and leave by the bed, then i make sure I drink at least 75% of it when i get home. if that fails have red rooster chook and chips as soon a your tummy allows food

Definitely, I learned the hard way, mixing different types of drinks and the next day, I swear, I will never drink again, but then time heals, so I stick to one type of drink only, and make sure you bring your child with you to remind you, 'the last hangover" to scare you, and it works

Sorry, I never did any drinking, so everything I have to say on this one is just hear-say. It looks like most people have the right idea of keeping the fluids up & replenishing lost vitamins & minerals either through supplements or some good foods - take the best you can get. Long - term, I'd need to get stuck into the kidney & liver supplements, methinks.

If you haven't tried it, Bitburger is an excellent German beer, and there is a non-alcoholic version (also bottled and available for good liquor stores e.g. Dan Murphy's) that tastes great if you're worried about social stigmas.

As for hangover cures, I agree with many of the previous posters - WATER! A hangover is basically dehydration so I take a massive drink of water every time I go to the bathroom whilst drinking. Plus keep some electrolyte hydration salts (e.g. hydralyte) handy for the next morning.

There is a product at the BIG liquor outlet that sells a product that you put in wine and beer and it neutralises the additives and preservatives. I gave up having a drink because of the headaches. Since I have found this product I have now been able to enjoy a couple of wines and a few beers.

Multivitamins (berocca will do) and lots of water before you go drinking. Stay hydrated, 1 glass water for 1 drink, the main cause of a hangover headache is dehydration. Learn what drinks give you a hangover and which do not (this admittedly does require some experimentation and severe hangovers before you stumble onto the right poison for you).

This may be a little late but if you pop 2 nurofen and drink a mizone which is a sports formulated water, (I like the lime flavour) you will not get a hangover as bad as usual, I always buy one or two before the night or a few more for a weekend bender and keep in fridge!! Can buy from most surveys but cheaper from supermarkets. Good luck!

The tried and tested cures vary from person to person and obviously depend on what, how much and how long you drink.
To even understand a hang over, you must first know what causes this process in the body.
As alcohol is a know depressant and it dehydrates the body, I find that making sure I have a healthy meal, prior to embarking on a big night out is a start point.
Plenty of water and the preparation for the body fairs better the next day.
I always have hydrolyte, ( from the chemist) in the form of ice-blocks or in the mixed liquid in the fridge.

I make sure I have taken one of these as well as really fill up on water. That's before I even start.

The poor ole stomach cannot take the changes in acid content, if you are not prepared to eat well and top up on fluids. And if possible I take a glass of water before getting into bed.
Hydrating is the key to it. As well as pacing how much over a period of time, no sculling.
It works for me.

Morning should include fresh orange juice a light breakfast and a fresh fruit & vege lunch.
My Favourites
After work drinks is a nice beer eg:- Miller Chill
Party's is either Bourbon and Coke or Bubbly
Dinner is always a nice wine and port with coffee.

If I go out with the girls I usually drink bourbon. But if hubby & I go out he has beer & I have red or white wine. I can't drink white wine when I go out with the girls, it makes me so sick, so quickly . The best hangover cure I've found is three aspro clear before bed & water (after throwing up) and in the morning coffee and three more asprin. Then a cold shower and something greasy if your up to it.

An old drinker told me years ago, if you can handle it, have a large glass of milk and 2 panadol before you go to bed, and you will wake up next morning with a clear head and no hangover. I've tried it on several occasions, and it really works. Trick is to hold the milk down if you are already feeling seedy by the time you go to bed!!

I'm a bit funny - depending on how much or what I've drunk the night before, I can either eat:
a) nothing
b) fruit salad
c) half of a KFC shop or a massive pile of chips and gravy - yum!
And nothing matches up all the above three quite as well as a huge glass of Coke - or three! It's amazing how much better it makes you feel after a huge night, although the thought of drinking Coke first thing in the morning during the week makes me feel a little gross!

Well I use to have Berocca, panadol and a big glass of water before bed works like a charm. You wake up feeling great. Also I heard Banana milkshakes are great as you get depleted of vitamin B and banana is a great source. Now come to think of it that's probably why the Berocca helps as well it has Vitimin B too.
So maybe you could have the Berocca, panadol and big glass of water before bed and for breakfast a banana milkshake and you will be bouncing off the walls!

Oh, and Terry? If you're afraid of being "seen" drinking water...get one on the way to the 'loo and away from the rest of the guys/girls...I was lucky...I could drink gin, bourbon, ouzo, tequila, brandy, scotch, wine...etc...ALL in the one night...but I lined my stomach with milk AND water before and after and drank plenty of water all night...like I said ...only ever had ONE hangover ...drank half a flagon of moselle when I decided to date my (to later become) husband! (should've indicated what a bad choice I'd made, shouldn't it? lol) :)

Hi Terry!....Drink a glass of water before starting on the alcohol and a glass in between EVERY round of alcoholic drinks - yes a greasy hamburger with bacon and egg usually fixed my stomach and with me a huge strawberry flavoured milkshake (I have a cast iron constitution apparently! lol - Favourite drinks? Mine are ouzo and coke, tia maria and coke and a cocktail made with either pina colada or something with Malibu - good luck with your weekend and remember, your workmates WON'T be there when you are hospitalised with liver damage so my drinking advice is paramount! lol (you can judge my age and sex from that comment lol and my adult kids don't always take my advice, but feel sooo much better when they DO! :) Only EVER had one hangover in my life by the way! :)

My top three favourite tipples are white wine (riesling or traminer riesling - I have a sweet tooth), rose and margueritas. The hangover cure that works best for me is a bit of preventative medicine first ie big glass of water and berocca or multivitamin before bed, then something greasy for breakfast (eg bacon and egg roll, mcdonalds) with strong coffee and nurofen if needed.

I used to work in medical centres and many came in after a "heavy" lunch. I would give vitamin B1 - 2 or 3 hundred mgs and this was very effective. I understand that alcohol depletes the body of B1. You can buy them at a chemist or health food shop.

Believe me, I wish we could. I brought 2 bottles back last month, any time someone is going over I request at least 1 bottle. This stuff is nice. Live around Sydney?

My fovourite drinks are depents where i go to, red wine or scoths with water and and ice.
the best cure is not mixing your drinks, or when it was a very heavy night a couple of glasses of barocca.

Back in the day ( 5 years ago) before my kids, I used to head out and drink with friends- worst thing I ever did was mix drinks- I agree with the posters above- never mix the drinks, unless you want to spend the night on the bathroom floor. Drink water in between each drink to stay hydrated and eat a meal before you drink anything. If you do end up with a hangover, my favorite food to eat was bacon, eggs and juice!!! Yummy!

Usually its always time to let it pass , I say drink heaps and HEAPS of cold water Have some Gatorade and keep your self in a dark room where you can rest the more light the more brain activity and more headaches ! >< Do eat a lot of carbs though have something a bit oily and greasy E.g bacon toasted cheese sandwich Or just plain gravy from KFC ( that works really well for me ) Hope this helps !

In my younger days I kept a beer jug at home, which I filled with water and drank it all before I went to bed. It was not "manly" to alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in those days. I always felt worse the morning after if I forgot to do this.

My morning after "recovery" consisted of orange juice, bacon & scrambled eggs, and plenty of toast with Vegemite. I doubt that there is any real "cure" because the hangover is your body's way of letting you know how much you have abused it!

Oh, I nearly forgot. Freshly brewed black coffee was usually on hand as well. It is of no benefit other than to be an excuse for not getting out of the armchair for an extended period of time.

Finally, a "heads up" to younger viewers for future reference; hangovers hurt more as the decades slide by.

Don't drink at all that's the best cure for a hangover.

I agree after all every drop of alcohol is actually real poison for your liver that struggle to process, getting drunk is actually when your liver is overloaded and you are being poisoned. Only other cure for a hangover is to detox for a few days, eat light, drink water to flush out your liver.

When you wake up on sunday morning with a hell dry thoat and sore head, a good cure is to drink some cold water with ice and lemon in it. the only thing that you need is time to overcome a hangover but if you eat some fruit with maybe some juice you should start to feel alot better.

Agreed with the posters above - drink one type of liquor/beer/wine for the night and match each drink with a glass of water! Cocktails generally give me the biggest headaches the next day. Also helps me to go out on a full stomach on the night.

As for hangovers - a brisk fresh walk by the water, followed by a big breakfast of eggs, toast, fruit and lots of water. I try to avoid the greasy stuff!

Too true. If you are going to mix drinks stick with similar type. (two different white spirits vs drinking beer then swapping to vodka). Avoid shots and going in rounds with people who drink after than you. Drink plenty of water before, during and after, take a multi vitamin before bed and then in the morning.
